Rolex Yacht-Master vs. Daytona: Wristwatch Comparison

If you’re in the market for a high-end watch and you’ve settled on the Rolex Yacht-Master or the Rolex Daytona , the reality is that you can’t go wrong—both are backed by the trusted Rolex brand, after all. Nevertheless, each series of watches includes select options and unique features that might give you the edge you’re looking for. Today we are comparing the Rolex Yachtmaster vs Daytona.

From reviewing the specifications and highlights of each watch, on the whole, I prefer the Yacht-Master series—specifically the original Yacht-Master collection (we’ll get to that)—to the Daytona line, on account of its slim, sleek contour and (to-be-expected) reliability. That said, there is much to recommend the later Yacht-Master II and the Daytona, and if you are primarily looking to fill a technical, functional need with your watch purchase, then the original Yacht-Master, the simplest of the three, may not be the best choice.

First things first, choosing a watch from the Rolex line means several certainties: you know you’re getting a reliable and durable chronograph, you know you’re adding a stylish piece of apparel to your wardrobe, and you know that every time you put it on, you’ll have wandering eyes fixated in envy on your classic timepiece.

But this isn’t a decision to take lightly. It’s an expensive investment, and not all watches—even high-end ones—are made equally. In this case, it isn’t just a question of “Are you a sailor (Yacht-Master) or a racer (Daytona)?” The Daytona series has a design optimized for measuring high speeds, while the Yacht-Master provides additional timekeeping functions the likes of which you might find handy during a regatta . Let’s take a closer look at all they can do.

The Rolex Yacht-Master and Yacht-Master II models embody the spirit of the sailor. Inspired by the rich heritage that has bound Rolex to the world of sailing since the 1950s, the Yacht-Master blends function and style, while the Yacht-Master II brings together the finest in Rolex technology to create a regatta chronograph built for yachting competition.

As the description notes, choosing the Yacht-Master series means making another choice: the original Yacht-Master (debuted in 1992), or the Yacht-Master II (first released in 2007).

The headline model of the  Yacht-Master  series is the Yacht-Master 40 , though Rolex also released a slightly smaller option, the Yacht-Master 37 . For the purpose of this review, I will focus on the headline model, but both the 40mm and the 37mm options can be configured to the buyer’s preference in terms of material, color, and dial type.

The headline model, reference number 116655, is designed with an Everose gold trim, a black watch-face, and the Rolex patented rubber Oyster strap, the first rubber strap on any model of Rolex watch. The Oysterflex strap, branded as a sporty alternative to the typical metal strap , is also hypoallergenic, so allay any concerns you may have in that regard.

The design, though uncommon, is not unbecoming.  It matches the aesthetic of the chic watch face well, and in fact, the slim style of the rubber strap carries its own elegance that matches the rather svelte original Yacht-Master .  Practically, it has the advantage of the ease of use and even more ease in cleaning, should it get muddy or slimy while you bandy about the wet rigging of your sailboat, as the absence of metal links, eliminates a natural trap for dirt or otherwise.

The primary unique feature of the watch– the bi-directional rotatable bezel for recording time (when sailing between two buoys, for example)–is a distinct advantage to those who intend to put their watch to the practical test beyond merely keeping time.  Whether you’re on the high seas or cooking steak in the backyard, any reason to leave your phone untouched (in this case, for the timer), and to put your new Yacht-Master to use, is a good reason.

The original Yacht-Master is an integral watch in the Rolex collection, and the headliner, Everose gold with black Oyster strap, will set you apart as a connoisseur in the timekeeping world.  Whether the occasion calls for formal business attire, or if you’re stretched out on the boat for the weekend, your Yacht-Master will strike the right tone .

Don’t take the release of a second series of Yacht-Master watches as an indication that the first series didn’t make the grade.  That said, if you opt for the newer option, you will be rewarded with several new features.   Again, this review will focus on the headline watch, reference number 116680, a 44mm watch with a steel plate, but as always Rolex gives you the option to customize your selection.

Let’s start with two mechanical/functional differences from the original Yacht-Master, and we’ll consider the stylistic changes second.  Both watches offer a perpetual, self-winding movement, but this newer watch adds to that the regatta chronograph, a programmable counter for up to ten minutes, ideal for timing the starting sequence of a regatta .  Rolex touts this innovation as the product of nearly 35,000 hours of development, resulting in a complex mechanism that uses some 360 parts.

As a result, Rolex produced one of the first watches with a bezel synchronized to the movement of the watch itself.  The timer can be locked into place beforehand, and the wearer simply toggles the knob on the side of the watch to start, or synchronize the timer with the watch. The new Yacht-Master also has a battery life of approximately 72 hours, compared with the 48 hours of the original .

As for the physical appearance of the Yacht-Master II, the most notable difference is its size, which is 44mm across the face rather than 40mm like the original .  This is a minor difference, but when the watch is clasped around your wrist–which, presumably, it will be–the difference is noticeable, as those additional few millimeters more or less cover the skin that otherwise remains exposed with the original watch.

The additional space also allows for a slightly more embellished watch-face on the Yacht-Master II, most notably the inclusion of a small seconds hand at 6 o’clock.  The additional features do give the impression of a bulkier watch, and really it will be a matter of taste if you prefer the larger or small dimensions.  For my taste, I prefer the slimmer cut .

Finally, the newer Yacht-Master is designed with a metal clasp, rather than the innovative rubber strap of the original.  The metal clasp can be extended by 5mm for comfort.  This is a more classic look for high-end watches, though the rubber strap is far from inelegant, and I have already given the reasons why it adds merit to the Yacht-Master , especially for anyone intending to put the watch to its semi-aquatic intended use.  That said, either watch can be adjusted and configured to your preference of a rubber or metal clasp, so neither watch takes advantage in this regard.

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, introduced in 1963, was designed to meet the demands of professional racing drivers. With its highly reliable chronograph and bezel with a tachymetric scale, it allows drivers to perfectly measure average speeds up to 400 kilometers or miles per hour, as they choose. An icon eternally joined in name and function to the high‑performance world of motorsport.

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona  is one of the classic timepieces of the Rolex brand.  Its durability and lasting favor speak for themselves, as does the lifetime endorsement of Paul Newman, who supposedly wore his original Cosmograph Daytona every day from 1972 until his death in 2008 .  This review will look at the 116503 model, but, again, the watch components can be configured to the buyer’s demand.

• Dial: Black, with snailed small counters

The feature most obvious when observing the Daytona watch is the presence of three small-timers inside the main watch face.  The Daytona is designed for the speedsters of the world, and that means it is precise to the ultimate degree.  The middle counter, positioned at 6 o’clock, is the second hand; the counter on the right records minutes lapsed, and the counter on the left records hours lapsed.  Seconds can be measured to 1/8th of a second .

On the circumference of the watch face, the dials used for the timing mechanisms are designed to screw down into the machine when not in use to ensure the timepiece remains waterproof.  When they are in use, they are designed to be perfectly waited to respond to the wearer’s instantaneous pressure, so as to maximize accuracy in recording matters of great precision, like lap times.

Stylistically, the watch stands up to its reputation.  Despite all the counters and features readily and intuitively available at a glance, the watch face manages to maintain a clean countenance all within a 40mm width.  There are no excess tics or trivialities.  Everything about the watch is designed for maximum efficiency .  And in that delicate push-and-pull between efficiency and style, Rolex settled on the balance you see on the Daytona watch that has enabled it to survive over half a century as a symbol for quality and elegance.  There is little to dislike in this timepiece .

Conclusion – Rolex Yachtmaster vs Daytona

Any time you’re deciding between high-end watches, a large part of the decision will simply come down to personal preference .  Neither the Yacht-Master nor the Cosmographer Daytona will disappoint when it comes to performance, and they’re guaranteed to impress when it comes to style.  With that in mind, if you are looking for a watch that will fulfill a specific function beyond simple timekeeping –that is to say if you are a car enthusiast looking for a watch primed to measure and calculate speeds, or if you need a watch worthy of your own sea legs, or what have you– then your best value will be whichever watch is designed to most closely match your needs .

But sometimes you don’t need a watch suited for high-speed road racing or that can perfect your regatta race.  Sometimes you need a watch that will set you apart at the office and with your clients.  Sometimes you need a watch that will turn heads around town.  Sometimes you just need a watch.  And for my money, if you’ve narrowed your search down to the Yacht-Master and the Daytona: go with the original Yacht-Master .  It’s slim, it’s slick, it’s simple, and in simplicity there is beauty.  The more sober the statement, the bolder the claim .

Rolex Yacht-Master II vs Rolex Daytona

Recently I had the privilege to buy a new Rolex watch at an official Rolex Retailer and skip the waiting list. The watch I purchased was the Yacht-Master II. When I decided to buy a new watch, I was keen to either get a Rolex Daytona (my initial first choice) or a Rolex with a second function such as a stopwatch or something else to play with that made it special. That led me to the Rolex Yacht-Master II. Initially I wasn’t sure I liked the aesthetic of the Yacht-Master II, and agree that watch is an acquired taste, but after looking at it in pictures and in physical form I came to really appreciate its design and unique regatta countdown, ultra-tough construction and celebration of rich yachting heritage. I am bias because I now own one, but I’d say the Rolex Yacht-Master II is a better choice than a Rolex Daytona if you want a Rolex with a stopwatch or second timer function.

Availability

I think this is the thing. Getting a Rolex Daytona, at retail price new from an official Rolex Retailer at the moment is very difficult. There is no stock available. That, and I think it is safe to say Rolex is trying to be very careful who is buying their watches – they don’t want their watches to end up in the hands of flippers who devalue their brand. I’ve covered this in How I Skipped the Rolex Waiting List . Believe me, there is a waiting list for Rolex, but it is possible for the ordinary person who has no buying history of Rolex to be able to buy one. The list is shorter the nicer you are to the resellers and if they think you want a watch for your enjoyment, and don’t suspect you just want it to resell.

Sadly, I think Rolex Daytonas just get snapped up by the watch flippers and those with a long purchase history or celebrities. The Yacht-Master II on the other hand is very much an enthusiasts watch. While the Daytona has a common feature – a stopwatch – just like plenty of other watches like the Omega Speedmaster and countless sports watches by other brands, the Yacht-Master II is unique with the regatta countdown timer. You can still use it to time something with the second hand, or countdown with the regatta timer but lets face it if you are buying a watch with a second function like a timer/stopwatch/chronometer it is probably because you want something to play with. That was my reason. I wanted something a bit special.

I don’t think the watch lovers who want bling pay much attention to such a refined, specialist watch like the Yacht-Master II, they go for a watch that looks like what they can understand, like the Daytona and want it just because it is a Rolex. Those of us who want a Yacht-Master II want it for its unique functions, and place in watchmaking history.

There is big news, and there is Rolex big news, and in some ways, ne'er the twain shall meet. At Baselworld this year, Rolex debuted a first for the company: the very first, ever, Rolex delivered on a rubber strap. Now, for most companies this would have little effect on watch enthusiasts other than to evoke (very) tepid interest at best, and boredom at worst – but this is not an ordinary rubber strap, this is an official, designed-and-tested-and-thoroughly-obsessed-over-by-Rolex rubber strap. And thereby hangs a tale.

The Yachtmaster, as we have mentioned in some of our previous coverage , occupies a somewhat particular place in Rolex’s lineup of sports watches; it shares water-resistance and a turning bezel with the Submariner (the latter is water resistant to 300 m while the Yachtmaster standard model is water resistant to 100 m). It is certainly not a tool watch; the Yachtmaster is offered in either platinum and steel, or gold and steel (that’s Rolesium and Rolesor, lest we forget) and is either quietly or unequivocally luxurious depending on what size and metal you go for (Rolex makes the Yachtmaster in both 35 mm and 40 mm sizes). 

The Yachtmaster’s history goes back to the first introduction of the watch in 1992, although the name, interestingly enough, appears on the dial of a prototype Yachtmaster Chronograph from the late 1960s (a watch so legendary I am actually forced to use the word; one of three known is in the collection of Mr. John Goldberger; we covered it – and a host of other remarkable ultra-rare watches from his collection – in a very memorable episode of Talking Watches ).

The term “Yachtmaster” is also, incidentally, used for a certificate of competency in yachting which is issued by the Royal Yachting Association, although we’re unaware of any specific association between the RYA and the Yachtmaster watch.

Now, this newest version of the Yachtmaster does take a few pages from the existing Yachtmaster playbook: 100-meter water resistance, a bidirectional turning bezel, and a dial and hands that echo the Submariner. There are also a couple of features that may make vintage Sub enthusiasts wonder if Rolex mightn’t have an exceedingly subtle sense of humor; the gilt coronet and “Rolex,” and the red lettering, both features which according to HODINKEE founder Ben Clymer would have, had they appeared on a Rolex dive watch, made it instantly the single most popular watch in the modern Rolex inventory. The case is rose gold – Rolex famously makes their own, called Everose, in their own foundry, with a bit of platinum mixed in to prevent discoloration – and the bezel, rather than being some other precious metal (as is the case in the “standard” Yachtmasters) is in black Cerachrom – a very technical-looking matte black that contrasts sharply with the gold case. Somehow, between the rose gold, the Cerachrom bezel, and the new Oysterflex bracelet this manages to be the most luxurious and at the same time most technical Yachtmaster yet (leaving aside the Yachtmaster II, which we recently reviewed right here , but that is a watch that marches to the beat of a different drummer entirely).

The two different versions of the Everose Yachtmaster (40 mm and 37 mm) sport different movements; the larger uses the caliber 3135 and the smaller, the newer 2236, which sports the “Syloxi” silicon balance spring (first used by Rolex in 2014).

The Oysterflex bracelet is, in a nutshell, quite a piece of work. One of the most endearing traits of Rolex as a company is that it tends to demonstrate what we can only describe as a laudable degree of corporate obsessive-compulsive disorder when it comes to research and development, and it does so, often, without making any sort of fanfare about it at all. In this case we do know a little bit about the Oysterflex, however – it is basically designed to have the hypoallergenic and comfort properties of a rubber strap and the durability and shape-retention properties of a bracelet. 

At the core of the Oysterflex bracelet are metal inserts made of titanium and nickel, which are used to affix the bracelet to the clasp and watch case; over those is a sheathing of “high-performance black elastomer.” “Elastomer” is a portmanteau word, formed from “elastic” and “polymer” and is a general term for natural and synthetic rubbers. In addition to the materials complexity of the Oysterflex bracelet, it is also shaped in a rather unusual fashion – there are ridges molded into the the wristward face of the bracelet, which are intended to allow the bracelet when worn to better approximate the natural curvature of the wrist.

They might look a bit odd but in practice, the design works out quite wonderfully; this is easily the most downright comfortable and organic-feeling rubber strap I have ever worn, and like the entire watch manages to be both extremely technical in feel, and very luxurious at the same time; I doubt whether any company has ever taken so much trouble over the design of a strap (for all that Rolex prefers the term “bracelet” in describing the Oysterflex, habit dies hard and you’ll probably find yourself calling it a strap, just as we did). On the wrist, the two stabilizing ridges do exactly what they are supposed to: keep the watch from shifting, as heavier watches on rubber straps are wont to do, without requiring you to have the strap uncomfortably tight. The Everose Oysterlock clasp does a superb job mechanically and also looks fabulous into the bargain; the quality of finish on the clasp and case may not seem terribly elaborate at first, but it is as technically flawless as anything I have ever seen at any price, on any watch.

What we have here, in other words, is a very Rolex interpretation of luxury. Yes, this is a gold watch, and a gold Rolex, and wearing a gold Rolex always carries with it, shall we say, certain semiotic complexities. Would Lil Yachty rock this Rolex Yacht-Master 40? Who knows, but it’s cool

Editor’s note: If you ever want to flex down at the NBAYOUNGBOAT Club, you want to have the appropriate attire — jacket, loafers, watch. And when it comes to the latter, we suggest the Yacht-Master. Surely, Lil Yachty would approve. 

This cool, calm and collected new Yacht-Master almost slipped past me. I was too busy falling in love (again) with the gold and chocolate Rolesor Yacht-Master, which was distracting me and dazzling my senses. But then, out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a flash of almost-iridescent blue, and my curiosity was piqued.

I’m so glad it was, because this steel and platinum Yacht-Master, with its dark rhodium dial and blue highlights, is an absolute stunner, even though it’s a much more restrained affair than its Everose-embellished siblings (in both Rolesor and Oysterflex variants). This is partly down to the dark dial, but it’s also the bi-directional platinum bezel, which might sound weird given the material, but with a predominantly sand-blasted finish, it’s actually far less in-your-face than ceramic. Not that it’s plain, by any stretch. The shimmering dial, polished bezel elements and centre bracelet links means it pops where it counts, and the overall effect of metallic grey on metallic grey adds up to a truly luxurious watch on the wrist.

Then there’s the blue. It’s funny how that single line of text and sweeping second hand — a comparatively small amount of real estate — can have such massive impact on the general feel of the watch. This bright slash of colour adds energy to the Yacht-Master, once again proving Rolex’s mastery of the minuscule.

Aside from that, it’s business as usual. You have the 40mm case, rated to 100m, robust 3135 calibre, with 49 hours of power reserve, and Parachrom hairspring, all backed by the Superlative Chronometer standard, which guarantees -2/+2 seconds of accuracy per day, after casing.

Rolex has spoiled us for choice this year, with the attention-grabbing Daytona, the youthful Air-King and numerous two-tone options. But if you prefer your Rolex to be more stealth than statement, you can’t go wrong with this excellent new steel and platinum Yacht-Master 40.

The Yachtmaster II and Yachtmaster 40mm are both great sports watches especially with professional sailors and yacht racers. They both are classy and sporty at the same time. But what are the key differences and what makes these two watches special in their own way? Have a look below at a detailed description of the differences.

Rolex Yacht-Master VS Yacht-Master II

Let's take a look at one of the latest and most spoken about Rolex Yachtmaster watches, the 116655. This watch is a special watch for many reasons. Namely, this is a historical landmark for Rolex since it is the first Rolex watch to ever use a rubber strap. Most people wouldn't bat an eye at the idea of a Rolex with a rubber strap so why the fuss? This is not any typical rubber strap. Rolex has been raving about this new rubber Oysterflex bracelet which is not only very comfortable to wear, it is also hypoallergenic.

The research and development team at Rolex has engineered a bracelet that is as easy to wear as a rubber bracelet but also holds its shape like a metal bracelet. They do this by using nickel-and-titanium inserts inside the band. They also instituted a patented shape on the inside of the bracelet which has a cushioning system built-in to it which allows the bracelet to take the natural shape of a wrist making the Oysterflex possible the most comfortable rubber watch band. An Oysterlock safety clasp keeps the watch from opening and looks stunning in 18ct Everose gold. Everose gold is a patented 18kt pink gold alloy that is unique to Rolex watches and has been used with all their pink gold oyster cases since 2005.

You'll also find a black matte Cerachrom dial which is a hardened ceramic material that is a tough and highly scratch resistant material that has anticorrosive properties and is impervious to discoloration from exposure to Ultra Violet rays. Perfect for spending your days relaxing on the deck of a luxury yacht.

The dial on the Rolex Yacht-Master 116655 with its cyclops date magnifier could be passed as that of a Submariner if it weren't for all the Everose gold used. You can find this material used on the rims of the index hour markers, the Rolex logo, and luminous filled hands. You won't find rose gold on the dial of any watch in the Submariner series (yet?). The combination of black and Everose gold is a real eye-grabber giving this the look of a really luxurious watch.

What's running inside this stunning watch? The Yacht-Master 40mm runs off an automatic Rolex perpetual movement, the Rolex caliber 3135. This 31 jewel movement beats at 28,800 vph and has a power reserve of about 50 hours.

Rolex Yachtmaster II

At a glance, this watch is an impressive piece of eye-candy with a polished case and two-tone rose gold and stainless steel bracelet. The design used vibrant colors from the blue Cerachrom bezel to the rose gold pushers and patented Triplock crown. The white dial is equally full of harmonic colors with blue steel hour, minute and subdial seconds hands and rose gold and red chronograph hands. A rose gold rimmed sub-dial and applied rose gold rimmed index hour markers tie it all together.

A unique feature of the Yachtmaster II is the regatta chronograph and features the world's first mechanical programmable countdown with a memory. You can accurately sync the watch with the starting sequence of a yacht race.

Unlike most bezels which don't operate as a component of the movement, the easy-to-use and bi-directional Ring Command bezel on the Yachtmaster II operates in conjunction with the regatta chronograph as an integral component of the movement. This bezel is the method in which you can synchronize the countdown timer to the start times of a race. Each time you press the button you can adjust the timer by one-minute increments for up to a 10-minute countdown timer. When you adjust the rotating bezel back to its default middle position, it resets the chronograph back to its main function.

This COSC certified Swiss chronometer is the self-winding caliber 4161 automatic movement beats at 28,800 vph and is completely manufactured by Rolex. Despite the familiar, iconic aesthetic enduring from one generation of watches to the next, Rolex has made minor revisions and enhancements to the cases over the years, so even two models with the same case diameter may wear differently on the wrist.

Just like clothes, it is important that your watch fits you correctly. This doesn’t just mean that the strap or bracelet needs to fit around your wrist; the actual size of the watch itself can have a significant impact on the overall wearing experience. Although personal preference will always be paramount, finding the right size watch for your wrist will go a long way towards guaranteeing a happy ownership experience.

How To Size Your Rolex Correctly

When finding the right size Rolex for your wrist, there are many important measurements and proportions to consider other than the actual case size of the watch itself. Two watches with identical case diameters can wear significantly different should they have different thickness or lug-to-lug measurements. Additionally, various protrusions from the case such as winding crowns, chronograph pushers, lugs, and crown-guards can also drastically alter the overall wearing experience and should be taken into account whenever you are purchasing a new watch.

Similarly, in addition to the strap or bracelet fitting properly around your wrist, the width of the strap can also have a significant impact on the overall wearing appearance. Furthermore, the amount of taper in the strap or bracelet is also highly important. A bracelet with a steep taper will wear quite a bit smaller than one that maintains the same width the entire way across. At the end of the day, the absolute best way to find the right watch for your wrist is to try them on in person, but keeping these factors in mind will significantly help narrow down your search.

How To Measure a Rolex

First, you should be aware of the industry norms. The diameter of a watch is its external width across its horizontal axis (from 9 o’clock to 3 o’clock), The vast majority of diameters are listed without taking into account the protrusion of the crown or crown guards. That means the “case size” number listed is almost always the diameter of the case, but not the amount of real estate that will be taken up by the watch once it is on your wrist.

Typically, watch measurements are taken with a Vernier tool (a pair of measuring calipers), and expressed in millimeters. The given case diameter measurement of a watch can often be a bit misleading due to the multitude of other factors and dimensions that have an equally important impact on the overall wearing experience. Additionally, it is also worth noting that square or rectangular watches will often wear larger than their case diameters might otherwise indicate, since the diameter applies across the entire watch, rather than just at its widest point (like with a watch that has a circular case).

Case Size (Rolex Width)

When you see a case size listed for a Rolex watch, this measurement typically corresponds to its diameter, which could be considered the width of the watch. Since most Rolex watches feature round cases, the diameter is often representative of the widest point of the case (excluding the lugs or winding crown).

Despite this case diameter being the go-to measurement for watches, this can often be a bit misleading since it is only representative of the width across a watch at a single point. The shape of the case, along with all its various protrusions such as the winding crown, lugs, crown-guards, and chronograph pushers can all drastically alter the overall wearing experience of a watch. For example, the Rolex Submariner ref. 116610 has the same 40mm case diameter as its predecessor (ref. 16610); however, it appears significantly larger due to its thicker lugs and crown guards.

Case Thickness (Rolex Height)

When we talk about the “height” of a watch, we are talking about how thick it is, or how tall it will stand up on your wrist. This measurement often gets overshadowed by case diameter, but the thickness or height of a watch can sometimes be the difference between one model being a perfect fit and the other being almost unwearable. With the exception of purpose-built tool watches like the Yacht-Master II and Deepsea, most Rolex models are reasonably thin, but it is still important to keep this dimension in mind when searching for the right model for your wrist.

Additionally, the type of watch can also have a significant impact on how thick it can be. Typically, dress watches wear better if they are thin and can easily slip under a shirt cuff. Conversely, a professional dive watch can actually benefit from being slightly thicker due to a taller bezel design offering more room to grip on the side of the bezel. However, your wrist size and shape are always going to be the greatest determining factors in terms of how thick of a watch you can comfortably wear.

Case Lug-to-Lug (Rolex Length)

Although the term “length” is not often used to describe the lug-to-lug measurement, it is an appropriate one in this context. This measurement has nothing to do with the distance between the lugs (also known as lug-width) – this will denote the width of the strap or bracelet that your watch requires. Instead the lug-to-lug measurement corresponds to the distance from the tip of one lug to the tip of its opposite equal. This “length” is very important because it can vastly impact the overall wearability of a watch – arguably more than the actual case-diameter of the watch itself.

For the vast majority of wristwatches, the lugs stick out from either side of the case (on the top and bottom). While the case diameter represents the size of the case itself, it does not include how far the lugs stick out beyond that, and it is this lug-to-lug measurement that is often the most accurate representation of the overall perceived size of a watch once it is on your wrist. A watch may have a very manageable case diameter, but if its lugs stick out far beyond the edges of its case, its lug-to-lug measurement may ultimately make it difficult to wear on smaller wrists.

Other Rolex Measurements to Consider

Beyond the case diameter, thickness, and lug-to-lug measurements of a watch, there are also a few other dimensions and proportions that can significantly impact the overall perceived size of a watch. While you will not often see these numbers listed on Rolex watch specifications sheets, they are still important to keep in mind when shopping for a Rolex, as they can dramatically impact the overall wearing experience of a given model.

Lug Dimensions and Shape

Despite playing a major role in the overall look and feel of a watch, rarely will you ever see any measurements listed in regards to the actual lugs themselves. Lug-to-lug measurements are sometimes listed; but most luxury watch brands (including Rolex) never include these measurements on their website.

Most Rolex watches feature very standard lugs, so their dimensions are less of a consideration when trying to figure out which size of Rolex you should get. However, the actual shape of the lugs and their size in proportion to the rest of the case can have a noticeable impact on the overall wearing experience of a watch. For example, the Rolex Submariner ref. 124060 features a 41mm case, while its predecessor (ref. 114060) features a 40mm case. However, since the lugs of the ref. 114060 Submariner are slightly thicker than those of the ref. 124060, the two watches actually feel incredibly similar on the wrist, despite their different case sizes.

Bezel Sizes and Proportions

Bezel sizes are rarely ever listed for watches, but the size of the bezel – and more importantly, the style of it and its size relative to the rest of the watch – can drastically alter the overall wearing experience. Since case diameters are typically the measurement most often used to describe the “size” of a watch, the size and style of the bezel is another aspect of a watch’s proportions that frequently gets overlooked.

A perfect example of this are the two vintage Rolex Daytona watches from the final series of the first generation. Both ref. 6263 and ref. 6265 Daytona watches feature cases with identical proportions; however the black acrylic bezel found on the reference 6263 is ever so slightly wider than the steel bezel of the reference 6265 and does not slope downwards towards the edges, so the ref. 6263 has a noticeably larger presence on the wrist.

Crystal Sizes

Beyond bezel and lug proportions, the crystal size of a Rolex is another factor that can significantly alter its overall look and feel on your wrist. Just like with the bezel and lugs, the proportions of the crystal relative to the case size can influence the overall wearing experience of a watch. Generally speaking, the bigger the crystal is relative to the overall case size of the watch, the larger the watch itself will feel on your wrist, because a greater percentage of its overall size is allocated to its display.

For example, both the Rolex Submariner 126610LV and the Rolex Datejust 126333 have official case diameters of 41mm. With that in mind, the crystal found on the Datejust 41 is quite a bit larger than the one on the Submariner, so the Datejust will likely feel a bit larger on the wrist, regardless of the fact that the two watches actually have the exact same outer case diameters.

Bracelets and Straps Sizes

Just like everything else, the strap or bracelet fitted to your Rolex can have a significant impact on its overall perceived size. Both the style of the strap or bracelet, along with other factors such as its width and the amount of taper it has can drastically alter the way that the watch wears on your wrist. Typically, the wider the strap, the larger it will feel on your wrist, but a steep taper can often offset a wide measurement at the lugs, simply because the width at the clasp is smaller.

Additionally, the style of the strap or bracelet itself can frequently have an impact on size. Bracelet styles with a wider link design, such as Rolex’s Oyster Bracelet can sometimes seem larger on the wrist than a bracelet with a more delicate link design like the Jubilee. The two bracelets may have identical outer proportions, but the style of the individual links can influence the way that the bracelet wears on your wrist.

Once you get outside the realm of Rolex bracelets, straps can have an even larger impact on the overall wearing experience of your watch. A classic two-piece leather strap typically results in a watch wearing rather small (hence why it is the go-to option for dress watches with their elegant designs). However, something like a NATO strap will often cause a watch to wear larger due to the extra bulk of the fabric and the way it causes the watch to stand up further off your wrist.

The largest watches in Rolex’s catalog can be found among its various sports models. At the present time, the largest Rolex watches available are the Deepsea Sea-Dweller and the Yacht-Master II, both with official case diameter measurements of 44mm. Despite being built for very different purposes, both models are purpose-built tool watches designed from the ground up to thrive in specific environments.

Generally speaking, Rolex’s sports watches have sizes that range from 37mm to 44mm, although there are certain older models from the Explorer and Yacht-Master collections that can have cases that measure just under this range. The original Rolex Explorer had a case size of 36mm, and the Rolex Yacht-Master was previously offered in both 35mm and 29mm (Lady Yacht-Master) sizes, alongside the standard 40mm model. Rolex Dive Watch Sizes

Dive watches are specifically designed for use while deep underwater. Consequently, visibility is key in the design of a dive watch, and most will have slightly larger case sizes relative to dress watches or casual models. With the exception of certain vintage Submariner watches from the 1950s that have cases slightly smaller than 40mm, the vast majority of all Rolex dive watches have case sizes that range from 40mm to 44mm.

As of 2020, the Submariner is the smallest Rolex dive watch with an official case-diameter of 41mm (the previous generation measured 40mm in diameter), while the Deepsea Sea-Dweller is the largest with a case size of 44m. The classic Sea-Dweller takes up the middle, offering a case size of 43mm; however, it should be noted that the case of the 43mm Sea-Dweller is quite a bit thinner than the case of the 44mm Deepsea, since it does not feature the same Ring Lock structure.

Rolex Mens Watch Sizes

The size of both Rolex watches men and women continue to purchase has steadily grown over the years. While the average size of a man’s watch during the 1950s was around 33mm to 35mm, most modern men’s Rolex watches have case diameters that range between 36mm and 42mm. With that in mind, there are certain Rolex watches for men , both modern and vintage, that feature case sizes both larger and smaller than this.

Historically, 36mm has been the go-to size for men’s Rolex watches, excluding the brand’s various sports models which often have cases larger than this due to their need to include additional features or functions. However, both the Rolex Date and Oyster Perpetual lines offer options with 34mm cases and these versatile models work well on most male wrists. Additionally, the Sea-Dweller, Deepsea, and Yacht-Master II all have either 43mm or 44mm case sizes, and while they are larger than the average men’s Rolex watch, they certainly fall into the men’s side of Rolex’s current catalog.

Rolex Unisex Sizes (Midsize)

Technically speaking, all Rolex watches are unisex watches. While the brand does have sections on its website specifically dedicated to men’s and women’s models, personal preference will always be the greatest determining factor, and any Rolex watch can be worn by any person as long as they enjoy wearing the watch. That being said, there are certain case sizes and collections of Rolex watches that offer more unisex options than others.

As a whole, Midsize Rolex watches are those that have case diameters that measure anywhere between 31mm and 37mm. Although 31mm Rolex watches are more often worn by women than men, and 36mm is the classic size for men’s Rolex watches, these are not firm rules, and these highly versatile case sizes can be effortlessly worn by both men and women.

The Rolex Date, Pearlmaster, and Oyster Perpetual all offer 34mm case size options, while the Datejust can be found with both 31mm and 36mm options. Since these case sizes are intended for both men and women, Rolex produces variations with a wide range of aesthetics, so that both men and women can both wear them. Additionally, at 37mm in diameter, the smallest Yacht-Master watch is also often considered a unisex Rolex watch, and it looks at home an an incredibly wide variety of different wrist sizes.

Rolex Ladies Watch Sizes

Rolex has a long history of producing watches specifically for women, and just like the men’s models, Rolex’s ladies watches have steadily grown in size over the years. While some vintage Rolex women’s cocktail watches have tiny cases as small as 12mm, the classic size of the Lady-Datejust was 26mm. However, in more recent years, the case diameter of the Rolex Lady-Datejust has grown to 28mm and now features larger and thicker lugs for noticeably more presence on the wrist.

With that in mind, Rolex ladies watches are also available with cases both larger and smaller than this. You will find older Oyster Perpetual models with 24mm cases, alongside the Lady Yacht-Master with its 29mm case. Additionally, while many ladies Rolex watches have case diameters that are less than 30mm, there are numerous Rolex watches for women that have larger cases that range from 31mm to 36mm. Some of these models offer cases that are the exact same size as the men’s models, but the overall aesthetics of the watch in regards to the style of its dial, bezel, and color palette are entirely intended to appeal to a traditionally female audience.

As of 2020, the smallest size of ladies watch that Rolex produces has a case diameter of 28mm. Both the Lady-Datejust and the smallest size from the Oyster Perpetual collection now have case diameters of 28mm; however 26mm was the classic size of the Lady-Datejust for many years, and until the 2020 update to the Oyster Perpetual collection, the smallest Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch had an official case diameter of 24mm.

The Yacht-Master’s new Oysterflex bracelet, developed by Rolex and patented, offers a sporty alternative to metal bracelets. The bracelet attaches to the watch case and the Oysterlock safety clasp by a flexible titanium and nickel alloy metal blade.

The blade is overmoulded with high-performance black elastomer which is particularly resistant to environmental effects, very durable and perfectly inert for the wearer of the watch. For enhanced comfort, the inside of the Oysterflex bracelet is equipped with a patented longitudinal cushion system that stabilizes the watch on the wrist and fitted with an 18 ct white gold Oysterlock safety clasp. It also features the Rolex Glidelock extension system, designed by the brand and patented. This inventive toothed mechanism, integrated beneath the clasp, allows fine adjustment of the bracelet length by some 15 mm in increments of approximately 2.5 mm, without the use of tools.

This functional bezel – which allows the wearer to calculate, for example, the sailing time between two buoys – is also a key component in the model’s distinctive visual identity.
