Whether you join us for  a Morning Mimosa Sail , Afternoon Day Sail , Sunset Cruise , or Private Charter , our sailing cruises in Newport are fantastic!

Newport is the sailing capital of the United States and home to one of the prettiest harbors in the country!

On all of our sailing cruises, you’ll sail through Newport Harbor, into Narragansett Bay, and along the shoreline of Newport’s picturesque Ocean Drive.

You’ll enjoy spectacular views of the Pell Bridge, Rose Island, Fort Adams, Clingstone and Hammersmith Farm.  Vintage America’s Cup boats, super yachts, and weekly races are common sights.

Our crews are excellent hosts and will provide light, informative commentary about the various sights we’ll sail past and answer any questions you may have.

No two trips are exactly the same since the wind and tide vary daily and we try to sail as much as possible.

Built by the Wharton family from Philadelphia in 1904, Clingstone has a fascinating history and has weathered many a winter storm.

Castle Hill Lighthouse

Castle Hill Lighthouse marks the entrance to Narragansett Bay and has welcomed sailors from all over the world to Newport for over 100 years.  The lighthouse is the finish line for many trans-Atlantic races.  One can walk down to the lighthouse by visiting the Inn at Castle Hill, one of our favorite spots.   Read more in our  blog ! 

Raising sail on Aquidneck

Feel like a little arm workout?  Guests may help raise sail on Aquidneck or sit back and relax.

Fort Adams was built by the U.S. Army after the British burned Washington in the war of 1812.  It marks the entrance to Newport Harbor and is the largest coastal fortification in North America.   It took 33 years to complete and never saw any wartime action. Today the fort is the home of the annual  Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals.  It's open to the public, has superb views of the bay and is a great place to tour! 

Hammersmith Farm

Hammersmith Farm was built by the Auchincloss family and was the summer home of Jacqueline Bouvier, who later married Senator John F. Kennedy at St. Mary's Church in downtown Newport.  Their wedding reception was held on the grounds and Hammersmith Farm was considered the 'Summer Whitehouse' of President Kennedy.  Kennedy loved to sail the waters off Newport and there are plenty of pictures of him and the First Lady sailing here. We'll tell you more when you come for a sail!

Sailing in Newport Rhode Island’s waters is world-class and is a wonderful way to experience this beautiful and historic area. Aboard one of our two boats, you can enjoy one of our custom private day sail charters. Tour Newport Harbor, with its classic and mega-yachts and picturesque surroundings before venturing onto Narragansett Bay. Cruise along rocky shorelines, see charming lighthouses, take in the impressive mansions, and more… Splash your feet, sail the boat or relax with your group over a tasty beverage.

Our two sailboats are icons of the Newport Sailing fleet and of Narragansett Bay. Lyra is our 44-foot Reliance sailboat and Wren is our 35-foot Allied Seabreeze. With a capacity of up to 6 guests each, both boats sail on daily charters from Newport RI, beginning mid-April through the end of October. We offer private 90-minute, two-hour, three-hour, half and full-day sailing charters. From tours and advanced sailing instruction to proposals or a romantic evening on the the water, experience for yourself why Newport is the sailing capital of the Americas. When you're on the Newport Legacy, sailing the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean, you feel alive and inspired.

Blue Whale Season is almost here! Don't miss out! The Blue Whale season starts in early summer. June through September we see hundreds of the largest animals swimming past our neck of the woods, and boy what a sight! Feeding on krill and swimming right off the LA coast. These magnificent creatures weigh in at nearly 400,000lbs and stretch to lengths of close to 100ft long! So anytime you want to go whale watching in Orange County during the year your chances of spotting whales are high!

You don't want to miss such spectacular sightings. Not only do we get to see blue whales, but we also see finback whales, minke whales, humpbacks, gray whales and more! There are also huge pods of common dolphin, Risso dolphin, and Bottlenose dolphin that swim around and play with the boat. We'd love to have you and your family onboard. We've got 3 cruise times daily! Watch as hundreds of gray whales migrate through our waters in the winter through spring, or see the happy sea lions sun bathing on the buoys.

OUR WHALE WATCHING EXPERIENCE INCLUDES...

• 2 - 2.5 hour cruise aboard the Newport Legacy
• A trip aboard our insured vessel to potentially view whales, dolphins, sea lions and marine birds.
• Knowledgeable crew members on board the vessel to give information and answer questions about the sightings, boat and other related inquiries.
• Newport Legacy is also offering the option for an onboard American Cetacean Society Naturalist to accompany your group out on the water to answer any questions, and entertain your group throughout the trip. *dependent on naturalist availability
• Option to go on an Enhanced Whale Watching Cruises or a Marine Protected Area Citizen Science Cruises for school field trips.

Our whale watching trips are between 2 - 2.5 hours in length daily.
