XCAT Row

Forward rowing, backward rowing, or SUP, the XCAT Row configuration does them all flawlessly.

Xcat rowvista®.

With traditional rowing, you are pulling the boat backwards, and your line of sight is opposite of the direction in which you are traveling. With RowVista, you're pulling the boat forward, and your line of sight is forward so you are facing the direction you are headed, much like driving a car or operating a powerboat. You will feel the breeze in your face and you can row at a relaxed pace without fatigue. Moderately fit people can row much farther than they think with RowVista.

If you want to be able to row forward and sail at the same time, choose the RowVista System from the dropdown menu on the left and add an XCAT Sailing Kit from our accessories below.

XCAT RowMotion®

The XCAT RowMotion uses a classic reverse rowing motion—the way that it’s been done since rowing was invented. The stable catamaran design provides a smooth safe ride on the water while an adjustable stop limits movement to the rear so that you can row without using foot straps. This is extremely beneficial if you want to row in flip flops or barefoot in the summer.

The XCAT RowMotion is available with or without oars. Choose the option that best suits your needs from the dropdown menu on the left.

The XCAT is a super stable platform for stand-up paddling. This boat can easily be walked around on and even surfed in waves. This is the perfect boat to SUP with a friend, especially for longer distances in coastal waters.

If you want to use the XCAT Row like a stand-up-paddleboard (SUP) choose the XCAT SUP from the dropdown menu on the left.

Boat Capabilities

Xcat row innovations.

Designed with rowing in mind, the XCAT is built to excel at rowing while providing an unparalleled platform that can withstand coastal conditions and constant powerboat wakes.

XCAT SUP Image

Optional Tiller-Fix keeps the rudder off center to countersteer paddling from only one side of the boat.

HDPE hulls are ultra durable and can handle hard groundings or collisions with underwater obstructions.

Self tensioning trampoline material saves you from unnecessary lacing for a faster assembly.

Anodized aluminum frame is corrosion resistant and will keep your boat looking new for years to come.

Extra wide platform is ultra stable. The XCAT can easily tackle big waves and rough waters.

Long and narrow hulls are fast through the water allowing you to reach high speeds with less effort.

Wide catamaran design lets you row in rougher conditions.

Low to the water design keeps you in touch with the water.

Concept2 oarlocks allow you to use our oars or your old C2 oars from college.

Fully adjustable positioning for oarlocks, roller seat and foot stretchers.

RowVista system has swinging oarlock that allows the oars to swing inboard of the boat for coming alongside docks or other boats.

RowVista is designed to allow the same motions as traditional rowing, but the boat moves in the direction you are facing.

Not the right sailboat for you? Let’s find your perfect boat.

XCAT Row Features & Benefits

The world’s first hard-hulled catamaran that can be transported on the roof of your car and assembled in 12 minutes—all without sacrificing quality or performance.

High-Quality Textilene Image

High-Quality Textilene®

This high tech material is used for the trampoline. It is UV resistant, hard wearing, breathable and self tensioning. This material is comfortable enough to sleep on but firm enough to comfortably stand and walk around. It is also durable enough to bring a large dog along without worry of damage.

Motor Mount Image

Motor Mount Included

All XCAT boats include a motor mount attached to the rear crossbar. This mount can handle up to a 3 hp outboard (Red Beard recommends either the EP Carry or Torqeedo 1103CL). If you don’t want/need the mount, you can unbolt the wooden motor mount from the crossbar for a clean aesthetic with reduced windage. Check out the XCAT Extra Crossbar With Outboard Bracket .

Bow Net Storage Image

Bow Net Storage (Optional)

This optional bow net and bowsprit allows you to store gear without cluttering the main trampoline area. With a rowing only XCAT, you will need to purchase the rowing version of the Bow Net as it includes a bowsprit.

Included Bags Image

Bags Included

Every XCAT Row includes two high quality padded storage and transport bags. One holds the trampoline and the other has wheels and holds the crossbars, oars, rudder (optional) and most other accessories. There will even be room left over to hold a sailing package as well.

Oar Blade Feathering Image

Oar Blade Feathering (RowVista)

The RowVista system allows easy feathering by rolling your hands forward. There are hard stops at the feathered and square positions to make rowing easier for newbies and relaxing for advanced rowers.

All Carbon Sculls Image

All Carbon Sculls (RowMotion)

Our all carbon 2 piece oars feature Martinoli grips and an adjustable cuff to accommodate any size rower.

Anodized Aluminum Frame Image

Anodized Aluminum Frame

The high quality anodized aluminum frame resists dings and dents as well as being very resistant to seawater and UV degradation.

Foam Filled Hulls Image

EPP Particle Foam Filled Hulls

This foam provides structural support to the HDPE hull skin material but also makes the XCAT unsinkable.

HDPE Hull Skin Image

HDPE Hull Skin

Think plastic cutting board material, it is weatherproof, impact resistant and dirt repellent. These hulls are easy to clean and can withstand hard groundings on an oyster bed, even though the boat floats in ankle height water.

XCAT ROW FEATURED ACCESSORIES

Sail it. row it. power it. go ahead, it’s your move..

The XCAT combines versatility, portability and performance in a way that no other boat on the market can. The XCAT Row is perfect for achieving your fitness goals, or use it on your next river or lake rowing adventure. You can maximize the XCAT’s versatility by powering it with an optional outboard motor, or add a sailing kit to XCAT RowVista for the ability to row and sail at the same time.

XCAT Sailing Kit Add-On

If you want the best of both worlds with the ability to row and sail your XCAT Row, this is the accessory for you. The Sailing Kit has everything you need to start harnessing the wind.

  • When combined with an XCAT Row model you can row it or sail it to your favorite fishing spot, or have versatility for your next adventure.
  • Easily switch between rowing and sailing in 60 seconds without any hard work or tools.
  • Easy to sail system allows novice sailors to “learn the ropes” without a large risk of capsizing. If you can’t get back upwind, just drop the sails and row home!
  • Recommended Hiking Seats option allows you to stow your oars behind the seats keeping the trampoline clutter free.

Accessory Kit Includes: Mast, Mainsail, Genoa, Bowsprit, Rudder and all running and standing rigging.

XCAT Sailing Kit Image

ePropulsion Motor Electric Inboard Motor with Mount

The XCAT is a lightweight expertly engineered watercraft, and what better way to power it than a lightweight and expertly engineered electric outboard! This motor configuration was expertly designed for the XCAT. This motor is easily deployed and retracted via uphaul and downhaul control lines and features a bluetooth remote throttle for easy use! This motor is also great for motorsailing out of a narrow creek to help you get out to the big wind and water faster!

  • Ready for use and folded up again in a flash (can even be used to cheat on tacks)
  • almost invisibly integrated due to its slim design (no need to mount on the outboard mount)
  • very light, no negative effects on weight trim when sailing (other outboards leave the starboard side of the boat heavier than port)
  • collision protection (folds away in case of grounding)

Runtime Range at full power: approx. 5 miles - runtime approx. 70 minutes | Range at half power: approx. 12.5 miles - runtime approx. 5 hours

RECOMMENDED ACCESSORIES

Choosing the right accessories to make the ultimate xcat row.

XCAT Accessory

Roof Rack Accessory Kit

This bundle of accessories is the perfect kit if you plan to transport your XCAT on the roof of your car. Roof rack not included—but it does include the necessary straps, pads and pegs to secure your XCAT.

XCAT Accessory

Bow Mesh / Front Trampoline (Rowing)

This front trampoline is fantastic for keeping the main trampoline clean and clear for rowing! It can’t carry a person, but it can carry about 70 lbs of gear and supplies. This kit includes the trampoline and the bowsprit. If you elect to add a sail kit (which comes with a bowsprit), Red Beard suggests buying the Sailing Equipment Set which includes the bow mesh instead of this accessory.

XCAT Accessory

Center Beam Seat

This seat is a great way to add a padded seat to the center of your XCAT. A good comfortable way to seat a passenger while rowing and keeping their weight center-ship.

XCAT Accessory

Launching Cradles

The Launching Cradles are the easiest to use as a solo sailor and are perfect for launching and retrieving from concrete boat ramps and moving the boat over hard ground like dirt. It struggles a bit in super soft sand.

XCAT Accessory

Launching Cart with Balloon Tires

This upgraded Launching Cart comes with purpose built balloon tires which makes moving your XCAT on soft sand much easier.

XCAT Accessory

Sailing Equipment Set

This bundle of sailing accessories includes: Hiking Seats, Bow Mesh, Tiller-Fix and Hiking Straps. All of these are highly recommended for sailing on the XCAT and the Hiking Seats allow for easier storage of oars when not in use.

XCAT Accessory

If you’ve elected to add the Sail kit to your XCAT Row, then this mast float will be your best friend on that fateful day that you do capsize. This float prevents the boat from turtling and makes righting the boat very quick and easy.

XCAT Accessory

The SUP paddle is fairly self-explanatory and stores perfectly behind the optional hiking seats. Red Beard recommends this plus the Tiller-Fix if you opt for no outboard or rowing system. This paddle is collapsible to a small paddle or a full length SUP paddle.

XCAT Accessory

The tiller-fix is a super simple contraption that essentially holds your rudder off to one side. This can be used to hold your course while sailing or to countersteer a solo SUP paddler.

XCAT Accessory

Standard with the XCAT Row RowMotion or RowVista options, but also can be ordered separately. This is a great bag to carry and store your running rigging in, to keep it from getting tangled in transport.

XCAT Accessory

Dry Bag - HIKO

This waterproof bag easily mounts on rowing boards or the XCAT bow net. Includes additional shoulder belts for use as a backpack. Size is 18" x 12" x 6".

XCAT Accessory

Stainless Steel Anchor

This is a beautiful stainless steel folding anchor that will give you some peace of mind when it comes to docking your XCAT. Includes a length of line appropriate for anchoring in waist deep water.

XCAT Accessory

These fenders are cleverly upcycled, spending their former life as seats. These fenders will help protect your XCAT from damage when rubbing against anything such as another boat or a pier. This is just for one fender, so if you think you need more, be sure to add more in your cart.

Live Watersports Catamaran Paddleboards

L4Expedition Catamaran Paddleboard

  • Classic Accessories Colorado XT Inflatable Fishing Pontoon Boat - $517.44
  • Fish Stalker Inflatable Kayak/Stand-up Paddleboard - $659.00
  • Badfish SUP Rivershred Inflatable Stand Up Paddleboard - $1,099.00
  • Bluefin Stand Up Inflatable Paddleboard with Kayak Conversion Kit - $699.00
  • Emergency 20" to 42" Telescoping Paddle - $13.38

I must be into predators today. Live Watersports' snake-tongued L2Fish and L4Expedition catamaran paddleboards come hot - no, how about cool and refreshing floating in a crystal clear Caribbean bay? - on the heels of the Shark Steam Mop I ran right before them. Two potentially deadly animals reimagined as coveted household and leisure activity goods.

Well, "coveted" might be a strong word for both. As swell as the mop surely is, between it and an ultra-stable, super speedy, extra roomy stand-up paddleboard with a sick catamaran-style hull, there's no contest which one I'd actually covet.

Live Watersports has 2 models in their catamaran SUP line, the L2Fish and the L4Expedition. The L2Fish is designed specifically for active paddlers who want to use their board for fishing, hunting, and windsurfing excursions, as well as those floating yoga sessions I still cannot believe people who aren't Cirque du Soleil performers can do. In combination with its forked front and back design, the L2Fish uses hollow core construction to increase buoyancy and reduce the board's weight to volume ratio. A tunnel in the hull minimizes its surface area on the water to further lessen drag, "allowing the L2Fish to slice through the water with speed to rival many racing boards on the market today." This SUP is 12'6" long x 34" wide. It weighs 51 pounds and has a load capacity of 500 pounds.

If the L2Fish is Live Watersports' sport paddleboard, the L4Expedition is its cruiser. At 14' long, it provides 8' of deck space and a 700-pound load capacity. Paddlers can move around with similar ease on the L4Expedition, but will be able to bring more stuff, and more paddlers, with them.

catasup padamaran standamaran supCAT

picture of a paddleboard featuring two pontoons and a deck.

June 22, 2024 Shades of green loaded with happy birds surround me on our deck. It's light at 0500ish. My coffee steams a bit. Life is good! As always, a supCAT starts with two pontoons and a deck. It includes a base set of ‘build to order’ features and can also include optional add-ons like:a variety of lengths and widths, several different wood species, ‘pinstripes’, a custom decal, hatches, and ‘one of a kind’ deck designs.

There's something about wood boats that is hard to quantify. For me as a builder, I love the smell when I'm working the wood into shape, the feel of a spokeshave as it moves across a piece of wood, and the look of the wood as it comes alive under epoxy or varnish. As a paddler, the feel of a wood boat as it slips through the water is very satisfying.

Pictures below are from the July 2018 supCAT splash. It handled well and felt great. As the pics show, this fourteen foot model nicely fits two people.

  • length - the supCAT pictured above is 14 feet long and 32 inches wide. 12 foot supCATs are possible, as are even longer (expedition anyone??) supCATs
  • wood - white pine (seen above), but western red cedar, redwood, even reclaimed barn board are options,
  • complementary pinstripe woods, e.g. purpleheart, wenge, bubinga,
  • a simple open deck. Plenty of design options are possible - ranging from hatches to built-in fishing rod holders!

SUPCAT was inspired by the catamaran boats, which everyone already knows for their performance and efficiency in seaworthiness.

However, SUPCAT uses the combination of the best of the worlds, mixing monohull and multihull in a unique stand up paddle board design.

The result is a board with less hydrodynamic drag as it has less wetted surface than a board of the same size compared to SUP race boards and with excellent stability.

We can really say that it is a hybrid performance board for both touring and adventure cruises and even unique race competitions!

Working with Hala is such a great process and their boards are simply amazing. My new Fame is my fourth Hala board in a growing quiver and my go to board for multi-day solo river adventures, as an unbeatable fishing platform, and as a lesson board for bigger or mobility limited guiding clients. Despite being large and in-charge, the Fame doesn’t paddle like a barge. It loves catching little pockets and wants to surf every bump in the river. If you’ve got things to carry, the Fame is eager and capable. It isn’t the most efficient, turny, or nimble, but it’s happy with three days worth of gear, food, and miles to cover.

Sweet board for hook’n lips.

DIY Standamaran Stand Up Paddleboard Plans

Fly-Carpin Standamaran SUP

27 comments:

I might just make this a project for my school!

Very cool, how much did this cost to make? I am thinking of making a paddle board.

Nate - This cost 350 me dollars in materials PRIOR to rigging and without including any tools. I didn't keep very good track of the cost of rigging and tools, but that stuff seems to add up fast and I would count on about 500 hundred bucks your first time.

This is really cool. I've been looking for a project like this. I'm just curious why you placed the platform so far to the stern side of center. It looks like the trim is off. Wouldn't you want the boat to be trim, with the freeboard of the bow and stern more or less the same? Perhaps the bow comes down a bit when under propulsion due to the force vector being applied much higher than a sit-down craft. In any case, thanks for sharing!

Actually that was on purpose for two reasons. The first was that because the nose of the pontoons have a longer taper than the butt the center of bouyancy is closer to the stern than the bow. It was going to be hard to figure the center of bouyancy so I centered the platform over the center of gravity of the pontoons (pretty close to the same on this design) by balancing the pontoons on a cylinder until I found the CG. That wasnt perfect and I think I missed the actually center of bouyancy by a couple of inches BUT the platform is plenty long enough relative to the pontoons that you can go from extremely bow-down to extremely stern-down by moving to either end. In other words I never felt like I couldn't get whatever trim I wanted easily as built. Additionally you occasionally want to be able to get aft enough to get the nose up a little bit for maneuverability so I felt it was better to miss a little aft than forward.

Trevor, thanks for the reply. It makes sense. Sounds like you put a lot of thought into the trim issue. Did you consider making the boat in three pieces with the platform attached to the pontoons so that the trim could be adjusted by moving the platform fore or aft? I spend a lot of time in a solo canoe, and having the ability to adjust the trim for different conditions is a big plus in a solo canoe. Just a thought.

Just wondering, you said to cut the xps sheet into 8" wide by 2" thick by 96" long strips. All the xps sheets I've found are less than an inch thick. Am I missing something?

My local Home Depots all carry this. Ask them if they have it. If yours don't carry it I guarantee you they will order it for in store pickup.

Alright thanks! When I looked online for my local Home Depot, those dimensions weren't listed. I'll follow your link and see what I can find

I've been brainstorming/designing a jon boat using this same method and saw your build on google images. Nice build!

Love this stuff. I am currently building mine. Where did you buy the epoxy and pigment. Did you use the pigment in every layer of glass? Why did you choose to paint the foam instead?

US composites, I was real happy with them. Yes,,I used pigment in every layer. I didn't paint the foam instead because extruded polystyrene has more potential for delamination thsn compressed even without a layer of paint.

I'm a not so avid but somewhat capable DIY'er. I've been wanting to do some sailing for a long time, and finally got a boat capable of doing it by myself. It's a 13.5' SOT kayak, but I think it'll work for what I have in mind. Anyway, I was doing some mindless googling when I found somebody who put 2 SUP right next to each other with a sail in the middle. Looked like an awesome platform! The cost of course led me to looking at DIY projects, which is where I found your page. Honestly, your standamaran looks very similar to larger sailing boats. I think a bigger version of what you made would be perfect or a one or two person mini-sailboat. Maybe one of these days (probably if/when I retire in 20 years lol) I'll get around to it. In the meantime, dreams are free :D

Cool Idea. It looks like your pontoons are 4 layers of foam. Could you leave layers one and four solid, but hollow out the middle of layers 2 and 3? Would the air void provide any significant difference in overall weight and/or buoyancy? I'm 6'5" 250 and looking at likely making my pontoons (perhaps much) longer, so I'm trying to eliminate any weight I can. I may also extend the deck for a little more space/dog first mate. Also, would an air void potentially try to expand if it got too hot?

You will save about 3 to 6 lbs depending on how much longer your pontoons are BUT if you do it you have to have perfect fiberglass with no pinhole leaks. My fiberglass has roughly 1 gazillion pinhole leaks plus about 10 holes from tree branches and it is no big deal because extruded polystyrene does not absorb water. If you have a void in the middle though, that does (and will) absorb water unless everything is perfect. Which is really really hard to do, especially with extruded polystyrene. If you want to make the foam hollow I would go with expanded polystyrene because it is easier to glass extruded without getting pinhole leaks.

Sorry, I meant it is easier to glass EXPANDED polystyrene without getting pinhole leaks.

Nice build! Couple of questions. Could you expand the platform over most of the length without affecting performance? Can you mount anot electric motor?

Of course! I figure it is dead weight to put a platform the entire length, and you probably need to use longer pontoons to increase flotation and keep the ends of the platform from hitting waves. Trolling motor shouldnt be a problem.

This is dope! Gonna be the flats boat for bones out in oahu. Question 1: in table 1instruction 1 for foam column B says 225(lbs)-144(A)-24(B) I'm assuming that was supposed to say 42 based off the increments? Question 2: I see you added rod holders and I have a plethora of designs in a folder. I was wondering if you drilled those holes and glued them in and wrapped with glass. Was curious how you went about it. Question 3: if there was a v2.0 would you have used "pins" or rods to connect the platform to pontoons before glassy for added strength and load despersion?

1) Yes, you are correct. That should have been 42. 2) I cut teeth into the end of a foot long section of PVC pipe. I then cut a hole that diameter in the fiberglass and used the pvc pipe with teeth to "drill" out a hole the same size as the PVC about 6" deep. Then I folded some 13x3" long strips of wetted glass around the end of 8" PVC pipe with a threaded fitting on the end and shoved it in the new hole and then folded down the ends of the fiberglass sticking out of the hole down. This glued in the PVC pipe with theaded ends permanently inside the foam. Then you can just make rod holders or tool racks or whatever you want out of PVC pipe and fittings. 3) Yes, for V2.0 I would like to make it modular. Not out of any need for strength. I have put hundreds of hours over three+ years on it and caught somewhere around 200 carp. It is plenty strong, with the only issue being some minor de-laminations in a several areas that was more due to inexperience glassing than the design. For 2.0, I would like to make it modular though so that I can take it apart into a smaller package. I would LOVE if I could break it down small enough to get it on a plane, even as over-sized. Figuring out a system for making it modular without creating weaknesses has defeated my imagination so far though. Any ideas?

What was your final glassed weight before rigging?

Thought you might like to see another XPS project that turned out to be very lightweight and robust, my Camp Capsule foam camp trailer: http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=55&t=64860&p=1152390&hilit=camp+capsule#p1152390 This forum is a goldmine of resources/techniques/material selection for anyone wanting to build XPS foam projects!

How this boat is constructed is really cool. I'm hoping I can put something together using this method. So far, I'm thinking small houseboat, or maybe small (2-4 person) sailboat. If it would be robust enough, maybe a small sailboat you could sleep on. Well, just dreaming for now.

I really like your SUP and I am sure I will try to make something similar for one of my grandchildren. Greetings from Karl ( Austria )

I must know around what this wieghs. I do alot of back lake fishing and walk in. I am curious, if I add shoulder straps to the top, can I carry it on my back or is it too heavy?

The SUP+ is a paddleboard-kayak hybrid that blends the large open deck and stability of a SUP with the paddling performance of a kayak. Featuring a catamaran-style hull with multiple kiss-offs, the SUP+ provides an incredibly stable platform for standing, paddling, and fishing. The large molded skeg replaces a traditional fin, allowing you to track straight while running in shallow water with confidence. The SUP+ is more than a kayak and more than a paddleboard.

supCAT cataSUP padamaran standamaran

I've always liked the look of catamarans and the quiet of canoes and kayaks. So several years back (maybe more), I put one foot in front of the other and carved out some prototype supCATs, each one better than the last. Until finally I had one that was 'good enough'. Four ounce fiberglass went on and soon enough that supCAT got wet. It was a delight! Here are some pics in the wild, on a two day float down the Wisconsin River over 2019 Labor Day weekend. Still have this board. Pure pleasure.

What to call it? supCAT is my favorite, but cataSUP and standamaran work too. padacat? Two pontoons and a deck. Call it what you will, but it floats, it paddles and it is a joy out on the water! There's more at supCAT boards website still here! - and it's June 24, 2022

Lush colors that cut through the water. A spacious deck that can easily hold more than one paddler, or even a paddler and a sitter. Tie downs and hatches allow for more options.

cataSUP options

  • I am happy to build you your own custom craft. There are several different options, perfect for a few conversations via email or phone calls to plan out.
  • Much like the idea behind the wavetrainSUP paddle kits, a supCAT kit gives a DIYer the materials to indulge their vision and not have to worry about all the table saw-based ripping and cutting. Kits contain all the precut wood and materials needed to make a cataSUP.
  • For those with the tools and the inclination, I am also developing a set of plans such that you can take the rough lumber and rip it into the materials you need to build your own catamaran paddleboard.
  • Finally, I am working through a new build in front of a video camera. The net result of this will be a video tutorial laying out everything a DIY'er needs to go from concept through completion of their own cataSUP.

XCAT Sail Catamaran Multi Sport

Description

Forward rowing, backward rowing, or sup, the xcat row configuration does them all flawlessly., xcat rowvista®.

XCAT Row Innovations

Designed with rowing in mind, the XCAT is built to excel at rowing while providing an unparalleled platform that can withstand coastal conditions and constant powerboat wakes.

XCAT RowMotion Image

XCAT Row Features & Benefits

The world’s first hard-hulled catamaran that can be transported on the roof of your car and assembled in 12 minutes—all without sacrificing quality or performance.

  • Wide catamaran design lets you row in rougher conditions.
  • Low to the water design keeps you in touch with the water.
  • Concept2 oarlocks allow you to use our oars or your old C2 oars from college.
  • Anodized aluminum frame is corrosion resistant and will keep your boat looking new for years to come.
  • HDPE hulls are ultra durable and can handle hard groundings or collisions with underwater obstructions.
  • Fully adjustable positioning for oarlocks, roller seat and foot stretchers.

Check out the   XCAT Extra Crossbar With Outboard Bracket.

XCAT Row Technical Specs

sup catamaran kit

SAIL IT. ROW IT. POWER IT. GO AHEAD, IT’S YOUR MOVE.

THE XCAT BASIC PLATFORM

Whether you are planning to use the XCAT as a rowboat, a sailboat, or better yet, both, it all starts with a great platform—the XCAT Basic. Made from only 5 parts, the XCAT Basic is easy to transport on the top of your car or SUV and assembles in about 2 minutes or less. The frame is durable and lightweight, made from anodized aluminum for durability and corrosion resistance against seawater. The hulls, which are the single heaviest component of the boat at 38 lbs each, have skins made from a sheet of recyclable HDPE. The sheet is thermoformed into shape then filled with floatation foam—this combines for a portable and unsinkable boat.

sup catamaran kit

The XCAT is a super stable platform for stand-up paddling. This boat can easily be walked around on and even surfed in waves. This is the perfect boat to SUP with a friend, especially for longer distances in coastal waters. If you want to use the XCAT Row like a stand-up-paddleboard (SUP) choose the XCAT SUP from the dropdown menu on the left. During the 2018 Everglades Challenge Red Beard’s very own Alex captained an X CAT   Sail with RowVista.

The   XCat SUP   lets you stand up and paddle for fitness or fun. The catamaran stability, coupled with the optional tiller-fix accessory helps keep you on track whether you paddle alone or with a friend.

THE XCAT ROW CONFIGURATION

Here’s where the flexibility, versatility and unique functionality of the XCAT’s modular design system really shines. The XCAT Row is a smooth and stable rowing platform, thanks to being built atop the lightweight XCAT Basic. At Red Beard Sailing, we’ve pre-configured the   XCAT Row   into three different packages: the   XCAT SUP,   the   XCAT RowMotion   (available with or without oars) and the XCAT   RowVista,   our proprietary forward-facing oar system, to accommodate your rowing/paddling style.

sup catamaran kit

XCAT ROWMOTION®

The   XCAT RowMotion   is a traditional rowing system—available with 2-piece carbon fiber oars—that takes advantage of the catamaran’s stable platform resulting in a safe, comfortable ride. The XCAT RowMotion comes outfitted with Concept2 oarlocks which allows you to use your own oars if you’d like!

sup catamaran kit

XCAT ROWVISTA®

The   XCAT Row Vista   is an award-winning forward rowing masterpiece that not only allows you to row in the direction you’re facing, but with an optional add-on sailing kit, you can both row and sail (downwind) at the same time.

THE XCAT SAIL CONFIGURATION

So you like to go fast—like really fast—like 15 knots fast? Behold the   XCAT Sail   configuration. In this sailing configuration, the XCAT Basic gets a short mast and a generous sail area that provides plenty of speed with just a little bit of wind. The mainsail generates high-power thanks to its proprietary loop system. Not only is the XCAT Sail fast, but it’s also the most stable boat we sell, capable of handling big water and bad weather, with a built-in, heave-to feature that will work even in the strongest of winds.

sup catamaran kit

With a tool-free assembly time of just 12 minutes or less you’ll be on the water in no time.

  • If you can’t get back upwind, just drop the sails and row home!
  • Recommended Hiking Seats option allows you to stow your oars behind the seats keeping the trampoline clutter free.

Accessory Kit Includes: Mast, Mainsail, Genoa, Bowsprit, Rudder and all running and standing rigging.

Startup Selfie

The Supmaran presents a unique solution for outdoor enthusiasts torn between paddleboarding and boating. This modular kit effortlessly combines the functionality of both watercraft, offering flexibility and convenience. It is the brainchild of Austrian outdoor enthusiasts Martin Schwaiger and Gregor Schuster, and has evolved through various prototypes since 2019. Currently, it is the focus of a Kickstarter campaign aimed at bringing this innovative product to market.

The Supmaran setup includes two inflatable standup paddleboards (SUPs), a snap-together tubular polymer frame, a waterproof fabric sunshade, an 80-liter cargo box, and two folding mesh chairs. This modular design allows users to utilize the SUPs separately for traditional paddleboarding or combine them for boating. For those who already own two identical SUPs, the kit can be purchased without the boards, allowing for cost savings.

The assembly process is straightforward and efficient. When boating is desired, the frame is snapped together, the sunshade is attached, and the entire structure is secured to the two side-by-side SUPs with four included straps. The chairs are then unfolded and strapped to the frame, and the cargo box is placed between the two chairs, providing storage for drinks, snacks, smartphones, and other essentials.

If a third-party electric trolling motor is used, it can be attached to the frame’s motor mount. Alternatively, the Supmaran can be paddled by two passengers, each paddling on their respective side.

Supmaran Paddleboards Boat Martin Schwaiger

The entire assembly process is claimed to take less than 15 minutes, making it quick and convenient to switch between paddleboarding and boating. The complete setup weighs approximately 48 kg (106 lb) and can support a maximum passenger and cargo weight of 200 kg (441 lb). This weight capacity ensures that the Supmaran can comfortably accommodate two adults and their gear.

Supmaran Paddleboards Boat Fits in Car

One of the notable features of the Supmaran is its portability. When disassembled and packed, the entire kit fits into the back of a car, making it easy to transport to various locations. Additionally, when the SUPs are used independently, the frame, sunshade, and chairs can be set up on the shore to create a mini gazebo, providing a comfortable and shaded area to relax.

Supmaran Paddleboards Boat Mini Gazebo

The pricing for the Supmaran, assuming it reaches production, is set at €1,266 (approximately US$1,360) for the setup without the SUPs. For those who prefer the full package, including the SUPs, the cost is €1,920 (around US$2,063). This pricing reflects the versatility and convenience offered by the Supmaran, making it an attractive option for campers, travelers, and water sports enthusiasts seeking a multi-functional watercraft.

Supmaran Paddleboards Boat Cargo Box

In summary, the Supmaran offers a practical and flexible solution for both paddleboarding and boating, making it an ideal choice for outdoor adventures. Its modular design, ease of assembly, and portability ensure that users can enjoy their water activities with minimal hassle and maximum enjoyment.

Great looking boat I haven't had the time to use the boat yet, but have assembled and inflated the boat. Compared to the Zodiac Granride MK3, it's a lot lighter, and the inflatable deck is much easier then the zodiacs hard deck to get in place. So just from looking at the TrueKit, i think the quality is up at the zodiac level, and looking forward to try out the boat in the water!

We’ve had our boat for a few weeks now, and I can honestly say we love it. It’s super stable and planes easily. It is super light, so loading it correctly matters, but that is super easy to do.

Discovery 330 has exceeded my expectations after my sea trials and break in of my Yamaha F6. Set up with the supplied hand pump worked well. Spring loaded wheels are a must have. Once inflated inspection of the seams and construction confirmed my research that this is a high quality craft that will provide years of enjoyment. After break in of my Yamaha with one person onboard the F6 pushed her along nicely.

Supmaran is your personal watercraft made of two standup paddleboards

The Supmaran combines two SUPs into a unique, comfortable boat.

Imagine cruising on a serene lake, the sun gently warming your skin, with the tranquility of nature surrounding you. Now imagine doing this on a boat that you can fit in the trunk of your car and set up in less than 15 minutes. This vision has been turned into reality by Austrian engineer Martin Schwaiger with his innovative watercraft, the Supmaran.

A Unique and Accessible Watercraft

The Supmaran is a one-of-a-kind watercraft that combines two Stand Up Paddle Boards (SUPs) into a single, functional boat. This ingenious design makes the dream of owning a boat accessible to everyone. Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast, a family looking for a fun day on the water, or someone who simply loves the idea of boating without the hassle of traditional boat ownership, the Supmaran is for you.

  • The Spacruzzi is a blend of hot tub and luxury electric boat
  • The floating offshore wind turbine pivots with the wind, making it more efficient

Features and Design

Comfortable and functional.

The Supmaran is designed with comfort and functionality in mind. It comes equipped with two comfortable chairs, perfect for relaxing as you glide across the water. A sunroof made of thick waterproof fabric provides shade on sunny days, ensuring a comfortable experience even during the hottest hours.

Set up and ready to use in less than 15 minutes, the Supmaran is ideal for spontaneous adventures.

Storage and Convenience

At the heart of the Supmaran is an 80-litre scuba box, providing ample storage space for everything you need for a delightful day on the water. From snacks and drinks to snorkelling gear and personal items, the scuba box can hold it all. Additionally, the scuba box has enough space to accommodate a battery, giving you the flexibility to power an electric motor and enjoy hours of leisurely boating.

An 80-litre scuba box provides ample storage for all your essentials.

Easy Assembly and Portability

One of the standout features of the Supmaran is its ease of assembly and portability. The entire setup weighs only 40 kg and can be easily transported in the trunk of any car. Once you arrive at your destination, the Supmaran can be assembled and ready for use in less than 15 minutes. The two SUP boards are securely attached to the frame with four buckles each, while the chairs are fastened with four nylon straps.

Comfortable chairs and a waterproof sunroof make the Supmaran perfect for relaxing on the water.

Performance and Versatility

The Supmaran frame is compatible with all standard electric motors, offering a seamless boating experience. Depending on the battery used, the Supmaran can operate for several hours and reach a top speed of 7 to 8 km/h. This makes it perfect for exploring lakes, rivers, and other calm bodies of water at a leisurely pace.

Customizable Options

For those who already own two SUP boards, the Supmaran frame is available without the original boards, making it a versatile and cost-effective option. The company is also working on a sail kit, which will further expand the Supmaran’s capabilities and provide an additional way to enjoy this unique watercraft.

The Supmaran is more than just a boat; it is a gateway to countless enjoyable and memorable experiences on the water. With its innovative design, ease of assembly, and affordability, the Supmaran makes the dream of owning a boat a reality for many. Whether you’re planning a relaxing day on the lake, a fishing trip, or a fun family outing, the Supmaran is the perfect companion for your water adventures.

Assembly Steps:  Inflate both SUPs and a platform. Place platform over paddle boards, and center it. Run 4 straps under SUP hulls, and secure to 4 lashing tie down locks. Pull hard on a straps to secure platform to top of paddle boards. Make sure locks are fully engaged. Unfold motor mount, and adjust lashing tie down so that it in vertical position. Make sure shaft of trolling motor rest on outer edge of platform. Make sure motor prop does not touch surfaces of inflatable SUPs. Always wear PFDs.
