New clubhouse for Sussex YC set to open

Sussex YC New Building

Sussex Yacht Club, formed in 1892, is a step closer to opening the doors of its new home following a handover of its new clubhouse building.

Despite the challenges caused by Covid-19, and three nationwide lockdowns, the development of the new clubhouse in Shoreham continued throughout 2020. With the interior of the building now complete the club is preparing to welcome back its members and the community of Shoreham.

The old clubhouse, open since 1950, is to be demolished later this year to make way for flood defences that will be built along the riverside.

The new building boasts fully modern facilities, and the club has honoured its history with several features that nod back to its important history in the town.

Kevin Headon, Commodore of Sussex Yacht Club, said: “The handover of our new building marks an important time for both the Sussex Yacht Club and the town of Shoreham.”

“Not only is the development allowing for improved flood protection for our community, it is also enabling improved access for cyclists and pedestrians, and providing the best possible and fully accessible facilities for our current and new members alike.”

The club expects an increase in membership enquiries this year, with watersports such as stand up paddleboarding having seen a huge surge in popularity in the last twelve months.

Sussex Yacht Club is an RYA Recognised Training Centre and an RYA Sailability centre.

Membership is open to all and includes the use of facilities in the new clubhouse, which will continue to be home to Sussex Sailability, a charity that enables people with disabilities to sail.

Sussex Yacht Club,

Welcome to Sussex Yacht Club (SYC), the home of sailing in Shoreham-by-Sea. Founded in 1892, SYC is a members' sailing club that offers superb modern facilities and a vibrant sailing community. With our main clubhouse, extensive boatyard, and moorings located on the River Adur, as well as our original clubhouse and locked moorings inside Shoreham Port, we provide a home for yachts and boats of all sizes.

At SYC, we have a strong racing and rallying culture, making us one of the most established yacht clubs in Sussex. Our keen racing and rallying fleets cater to sailors of all levels, from beginners to seasoned competitors. We're also proud to have a dedicated dinghy section where we place particular attention on nurturing youth sailors, as well as a rapidly growing Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) section and an enthusiastic outrigger canoe club.

For those who enjoy diving, our dive section has its own rigid inflatable boat (RIB) and offers diving opportunities throughout the year. Additionally, we have established Sussex Sailability, a charity that encourages and supports disabled people to start sailing, develop their skills, and gain qualifications.

When you're not on the water, you can relax and enjoy the social aspects of SYC. Our clubhouse features Stow's Restaurant, a popular dining spot that offers delicious food and marvellous views of the river. We also host a variety of social events throughout the year. Members can further enjoy discounted drinks in our Members' Bar.

Membership at SYC is open to everyone, and we invite you to join us. About sailing.

“There is nothing – absolutely nothing – half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats” – Kenneth Grahame

So it seems you have found us! Is that by estimated position, or a three-point bearing? Or just a GPS fix? Nevermind… Welcome to the University of Sussex Sailing Club (or USSC for short)

If you’re interested in boats, in sails, in the sea, in racing, in cruising, in keelboats, in dinghies or anything vaguely similar, this is the place for you!

Linked with Sussex Yacht Club in nearby Shoreham, we’ve created a place where anyone and everyone can go sailing – from the complete “never been on a boat before” beginner to experienced racer, and everything in between. We provide all of the necessary equipment, instruction and access to the water! Membership includes the ability to sail with us on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons depending on tide times.

Linked with Sussex Yacht Club, we meet at Falmer Station, and take the train just a few stops into Brighton and back out to Shoreham (it’s not too far!), then make the most of our time out on the water – weather and daylight permitting, of course.

Apart from sailing, our club’s activities also include:

- Excellent socials (because who does rowdy parties better than pirates, I mean, sailors?)

- Taking part in inter-university team racing events (we don’t take things too seriously.. they’re a lot of fun!)

- Attending lots of sailing(y) events (the boat/dinghy show, SYC’s Royal Escape, to name a few..)

- Our legendary summer yacht trip (ending the year with a week away, sailing around lots of beautiful Greek islands with your sailing pals)

The club’s committee post announcements and the latest news about the club to our instagram page – make sure you’re following to keep up to date with what we’re up to! @sussexunisailing

We also have a members whatsapp group, where we post our events and weekly signup sheets, please message us or come along to our freshers fair stand to join!

And finally, if you have any questions – anything at all! – please don’t hesitate to ask. We can be reached most easily on Instagram, but you can also email if you like!
