Betsinda on her mooring in Northern Ireland

Betsinda is one of the later boats to be built by Elkins with the more spacious, 6′ long, cockpit. Built to a very high spec in 1954 with teak bottom, Honduras mahogany topsides, lead keel, bronze floors and keel bolts, she was later given a laid teak deck. Surely one of the smartest Vertues around, she has had a very pampered life in recent years with lots of money spent on her and not many miles under her keel.

Betsinda is in commisson lying in Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland. She comes with an enormous amount of gear and spares and has recently had new LED lighting installed, and a new T H Norris propeller to match the 21hp Nanni diesel engine.

“ Sally II , a Laurent Giles 5-tonner, built in 1937, sail number V2, is for sale, the second Vertue in that most famous class, although the name only became associated with these sturdy, record breaking wee yachts after the war, when astonishing transatlantic and long distance feats were achieved by the likes of Humphrey Barton and others. Sally was commissioned by a Poole solicitor for local sailing, but in her time has cruised all over the UK, from Wales, across Channel to France, and currently on the West coast of Scotland. Structurally in excellent condition – her tungum bronze floors, lead keel, bronze bolts, pitch pine on massive oak timbers, have stood up well, and she makes next to no water on her mooring. After 30 years in the same ownership, she is tired and deserves an owner who can wield a paint brush and sander. Her Yanmar IGM 10 diesel is a few years old, with very low hours. Her six Richardson sails good for many more miles. Her varnished Noble mast almost like new. Sally has featured in many modest cruising stories in various magazines. An archive of photos and documents includes her original bill of sale from Elkins, a Blue Book and much more besides. Bought by her current owner for £10,000, with a recent survey, she is for sale at £15,000. A sheltered mooring is available, just across the loch from wooden boatbuilders Johnson & Loftus where she is slipped annually for maintenance.” Adrian Morgan

Summer 2024 paintwork

Roger Robinson Writes: This boat is a very rare example of those few early Vertues whose purity of line and exquisite proportions first made people take note of these Giles 5 Tonners. There are very few of them left in the UK as several were lost many years ago, or are now treasured abroad. Sally ‘s nearest sister-ship, Karesta Ferida , with her slim rubbing band similarly accentuating that sublime sheerline, went to the USA, as did Charis , while ‘V3’ Monie is in Italy. Sally is surely one for the Vertue connoisseur.

Laurent Giles Vertue – Reduced

£ 12,500

Boat Details

  • Description

25′ Laurent Giles Vertue designed by Laurent Giles and built by Stebbings of Burnham on Crouch in 1951.  She was built for the Festival of Britain exhibition in 1951 as an example of top class British boat building and craftsmanship, there are black and white photos of her being exhibited with her original varnished hull.  She was named ‘Festival Vertue’ when launched.

After this she remained in the same family for over  50 years, based in Essex, where she was very well maintained and had a major professional refit in 2005.  She then moved to Devon where she is now based and has been kept up to a very good standard by her diligent owner with professional help where required.  She benefits from a very smart recently made winter cover that fits around the mast and protects the whole boat.

This is the short doghouse model giving a slightly larger cockpit and a bridge deck, ideal for weekend and day sailing.  The interior offers 2 comfortable berths and 6′ headroom plus a heads and galley, everything you need for local cruising and long weekends aboard.

This is a very smart example of the Vertue in really ready to go condition with a nice pedigree and history.

Benefitting from a Nov 2022 Survey, the Surveyor concluded “Virtue Fidelis was generally found to be in very good order, particularly in view of the fact that the vessel is more than 70 years old.” and valued her at the price of £22,000

May 2024 hull gloss painted, primed and antifouled with Sea Jet 33, all preseason minor repairs carried out, deck painted, 4 coats of G4 and 4 coats of International Schooner varnish applied ready for a new owner in 2024.

BROKER'S COMMENTS

It is remarkable that such a small unassuming boat has almost become Laurent Giles’s hallmark rather than one his other important designs in the league of large luxury yachts and ocean racers. From before the 2nd World War Vertues have criss-crossed most of the World’s oceans; many such voyages undertaken single handed speaking volumes for this enduring design. ELLENOR JOSEPHINE was commissioned and built IBTC Lowestoft to a high specification by someone who wanted to sail long distances. Much thought has also gone into her inventory. In the event, she has cruised but not been very far afield and she remains in a condition close to that when launched in 1990. This boat would be as perfect for mucking about on a Saturday outing in the West Country as she would for taking on the mid Atlantic.

Class comments

The extended cruising version of this design was known as the Vertue Ocean and incorporated modifications from the original Vertue design suggested to Laurent Giles by Humphrey Barton. They were described on p 158 of his book entitled “Vertue XXXV”. The class was actually named post war by Laurent Giles in recognition of the presentation to Lawrence Biddle and Humphrey Barton on EPENETA, of the Little Ship Club’s Vertue Cup for their crossing the Bay of Biscay in 1939. There is a chapter in the book “Laurent Giles and his Yacht Designs” by Adrian Lee and Ruby Philpott dedicated to the Vertues and detailing numerous members of the Class with numerous anecdotes extolling their resilience, practicality and sheer performance in some of the World’s most powerful oceans. Humphrey Barton following his epic passage from the Lizard to Sandy Hook off New York in 1950 was to say: “I honestly believe she best designed built and equipped small ocean going cruising yacht that has yet been produced. Her ability to stand up to bad weather, her remarkable high performance under sail and the comfort of her accommodation are outstanding” - No surprise then that even before the Class half century, some 200 had been built.

This boat was launched in November 1990 for Mr Ian Wright and named PATIENCE. Mr Wright died around 2005, his widow selling the boat to Mr Brian Edmunds MBE FCA in August 2006. Her current owner bought her in July 2009 at Tollesbury in Essex, then taking her to Mashfords Yard opposite Plymouth Devon, where she underwent an extensive refit. And was renamed ELLENOR JOSEPHINE.

Wooden Ships Comments on this Laurent Giles Vertue

25’ Laurent Giles Vertue No. 132 built in 1964 by John Perry of Cosham.

John Perry built two Vertues and was a renowned boat builder with an excellent reputation for producing high quality boats.  Judging by the list of materials used in the build of this boat the original owner wanted a top quality yacht and was willing to pay for it.  The commissioning owner, Henry Claude Lyon Garnett CBE was a Major in the Royal Horse Guards.  The build was carried out under hands-on supervision of the Laurent Giles office with weekly visits to inspect progress and ensure the boat was being built to their exacting standards.

A superb example of the class planked entirely of teak and built to the highest standards.  Sold to the last 2 owners by Wooden Ships.  In current ownership since 2011 during which time she has had some major upgrades including new engine, new mast, new keel and floor bolts, re-payed deck and thorough re-painting inside and out.

This yacht comes with all her history and paperwork back to 1964 and a full photo record of all work done in the present ownership.

This is a very fine example of the Vertue in lovely condition with a long record of professional refit work carried out in the last 12 years.
