About Christensen Yachts

CHRISTENSEN YACHTS is a US-based shipyard located in Vancouver, Washington and was founded by Dave Christensen. Prompted by the fact that there were no US shipyards that could build to the specification he desired for his own yacht, he partnered with Westport Shipyard, which built the hull he would use for his own personal creation. The success of his vessel then sparked the naissance of Christensen Shipyard, which he started in 1986. For the following 25 years, he continued building on his passion until retirement in 2008, however the Christensen Yachts legacy continued forth under new management. The Christensen Yachts workforce of 120 boat builders utilize the best of composite materials available to create its fleet of luxury yachts. Through vacuum-infusion, along with proprietary methods, the company has managed to create a strength-to-weight ratio that is 7 times stronger than steel and solid laminate. Through its own metalwork department, Christensen Yachts’ craftsmen create the top-level hardware seen throughout the vessels, such as handrails, stairways, and anchor pockets, utilizing high-grade steel that withstands the test of time. The shipyard also employs highly talented woodworkers for its yachts’ interiors, and works with top designers for its upholstery and stonework. The yard’s pride stems from having all its talent under one roof that utilize state-of-the-art machinery and tools so it can maintain its high level of fit and finish.

World-class builds by Christensen Yachts include the 154’ (46.9m) ONE MORE TOY, the 164’ (50m) SILVER LINING, the 160’ (49m) CHASSEUR, and more, with design by some of the top stylists from around the world including, Evan K. Marshall , the Pavlik Design Team , and own team of naval architects and designers.

Christensen Yachts for Sale

Renowned as one of America's premier custom superyacht manufacturers, Christensen Shipyards, based in Vancouver Washington, is celebrated for its artisans' exceptional craftsmanship and meticulous focus on every intricate detail.

Founder Dave Christensen began his career in construction during the mid-1950s, spanning until the early 1980s. Throughout this period, he constructed a variety of commercial and residential projects across the Pacific Northwest. However, upon retiring from the construction industry in 1982, his passion for craftsmanship led him to embark on a new endeavor: building a yacht. Dissatisfied with existing manufacturers' offerings, Christensen collaborated with Westport Shipyard to construct a hull to his exacting standards. Taking personal charge of the yacht's fit and finish, he created a luxury vessel that surpassed expectations. This success led to the establishment of Christensen Shipyards in 1986.

For the next twenty-five years, Dave Christensen spearheaded the company's growth, overseeing the construction of increasingly larger yachts. His dedication to excellence remained unwavering until his retirement from this "second career" in 2008.

While Christensen Shipyards has developed standardized hull molds for composite yachts of various sizes, each vessel is meticulously customized, often featuring the expertise of renowned interior designers. Noteworthy launches include the transformation of American owner John Staluppi's former 59.68-meter Casino Royale, now known as Lady Elaine, launched in 2008, and currently available for sale through RJC Yacht Sales. Additionally, the 48.77-meter luxury yacht Odessa, sold by RJC Yacht Sales, crafted by Christensen Shipyards in 2009, boasts a striking black hull and features a sophisticated, magnificent interior design.

Christensen

In 1982, Dave Christensen set out to build a yacht for personal use. When he was unable to find a yard that would perform to his high standards, he set out to build the boat himself. By 1985, Christensen Yachts was incorporated and a year later the shipyard was open for business. Located in Vancouver, Washington along the Columbia River, the yard focuses on building custom luxury motor yachts from 100′ – 165′.

Final two yachts from Christensen Shipyards about to hit the water

One could begin trip to nearby marina as early as wednesday.

One of the two final yachts at Christensen Shipyards in Vancouver is prepped for its move to a nearby marina launch ramp this week.

The last two yachts from Vancouver builder Christensen Shipyards are scheduled to launch in the next two weeks, marking the end of a 30-year era for the boat-building facility in the Columbia Business Park, which will be repurposed to serve as a manufacturing site for Portland-based Vigor.

The first of the two yachts was being mounted on moving equipment Tuesday and is expected to begin the trip to a nearby Columbia River marina as early as Wednesday. The other vessel will follow suit as soon as the first one is in the water.

“One’s headed to the water this week and the other is going next week,” Christensen Shipyards owner Henry Luken said Tuesday.

Vigor announced in February it would purchase the Vancouver facility to manufacture a new type of landing vehicle for the U.S. Army, and Luken announced plans to restart the luxury boat company at a new facility at Tellico Lake, Tenn.

The announcement came after a lengthy legal battle between Luken — a longtime investor, customer and later co-owner of the company — and the family of company founder Dave Christensen, who died in 2018. Each side blamed the other for financial struggles the company faced in the years after the 2008 financial crisis.

Luken filed for Christensen Shipyards to be placed in receivership in 2015, and later bought its assets out of receivership and restarted the company as a new business entity. He sued the Christensens in 2016, seeking to recover millions of dollars that he said he’d lost when the original company went under.

The Christensens pushed back, alleging that Luken had used his co-owner position to force the company into a series of bad business decisions with the intention of bankrupting it so that he could take over. The lawsuit reached a settlement in February, shortly before the sale to Vigor was announced.

Officials at Christensen said the handover of the Vancouver facility would take place around the end of June, but the company would first have to finish work on two yachts still under construction. One of them was described as nearly complete, but the other wasn’t far enough along to be finished in time.

The tentative plan was to bring the unfinished hull up to seaworthy status and then sail it to the Pacific Ocean, through the Panama Canal and up the Mississippi and Tennessee Rivers to reach Tellico Lake, where it would be completed at the other facility.

That plan appears to have changed. Reached for comment on Tuesday, Luken said the yacht scheduled for launch this week is the completed vessel. The unfinished yacht has been sold and will be finished by the buyer, he said.

Luken said the unfinished yacht will be moved to a new location to be completed, although he said he could not disclose its destination or the identity of the buyer, saying only that the yacht would remain on the West Coast rather than traveling to Tellico Lake.

The process of moving and launching a multimillion-dollar yacht is slow and deliberate. According to Anna Pipher, an employee at the Vancouver facility, crews are scheduled to begin moving the first yacht before sunrise Wednesday morning, and it will take all day just to move it less than half a mile to the top of the marina ramp near Southeast Marine Park Way.

The yacht will sit on the ramp Thursday while preparations are made to lower it into the water, which is tentatively scheduled for Friday. It will not depart immediately, although Pipher said she couldn’t say how long it will remain in the marina.

Shipbuilder Vigor cites due diligence in delay of plant launch in Vancouver, Washington

Work to transform the former Christensen yachts facility into a Vigor plant producing aluminum marine craft will likely start in late July or early August.

An initial time line announced earlier this year called for that to happen in May.

“There was a hope that we might be able to work out an agreement to begin there sooner,” said Jill Mackie, Vigor’s senior vice president of public affairs.

Vigor’s planning, engineering and permit acquisition is underway, Mackie said.

The move-in delay is primarily the result of due diligence taking place before a sale is closed, she said.

“It’s not uncommon in complicated property transactions for these to take longer than planned,” Mackie said.

On top of that, Christensen still has two yachts under construction in the facility at 4400 S.E. Columbia Way, officials said. It was not clear on Monday what stage of construction the yachts are at and when they might be moved out of the plant.

“One looks like it’s very close to being finished, and there’s one that looks like it’s just a hull with not much more than that,” said Chad Eiken, city of Vancouver director of community economic development, who’s been assisting Vigor in its move.

The Christensen website shows renderings of two 164-foot-long yachts that are under construction. The company is in the process of moving to a production plant in Tellico Lake, Tenn. An email to a Christensen official was not returned.

When Vigor launches production at the former Christensen site, about 100 workers skilled in aluminum boat production will be employed. Of that total, 80 workers from Vigor’s plant in Clackamas, Ore., will transfer along with 20 from the company’s facility in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood.

About 40 of Vigor’s workers in Ballard declined offers to move to Vancouver, either transferring to jobs at Vigor’s Seattle facility at Harbor Island or elsewhere in the area’s marine industry, reflecting “an incredibly strong market for this type of skillset for these people,” Mackie said.

By 2023, up to 400 workers are expected to employed at Vigor’s Vancouver aluminum fabrication facility. The company already has welding and assembly buildings on an 11.5-acre site next to the Columbia River at 3515 S.E. Columbia Way.

Ongoing production of aluminum craft now taking place at Ballard will be moved to Vancouver, including construction for the Navy, Coast Guard and U.S. allies.

And prototype work will begin on the U.S. Army’s new landing craft, called Maneuver Support Vessel (Light). That contract, valued at $979.4 million over 10 years, is the largest in Vigor’s history. It calls for more than 30 of the vessels to be built.

In April, Vigor announced the Port of Los Angeles had awarded Vigor a contract to build two 56-foot pilot boats. The boats will be built in Vancouver. Vigor expects to complete construction of the boats by late summer 2020.

Specializing in premium craftsmanship of composite yacht building technology, Christensen Shipyards is one of America’s biggest custom superyacht builders. Renowned for their high-quality craftsmanship and artisans’ craftsmanship Christensen yacht builds range from 115-feet (35m) to 196-feet (60m), and they have recently increased their facilities to allow for even larger builds. Christensen has delivered several award-winning yachts over the years, working with renowned designers on some of the world’s most celebrated superyacht builds, including notable vessels such as the 196-foot (60m) CASINO ROYALE, and the 160-foot (48.5m) ODESSA.

Christensen History

After retiring from the construction business in the early 1980s, the late Dave Christensen decided to build a yacht but at the time he struggled to find a shipyard that could deliver a vessel to his particular standards of finish. Partnering with Westport to build the hull, he went on to complete his own yacht’s fit and finish with great success, and so became the first Christensen yacht build. He went on to establish the original Christensen shipyard in 1986 in the Pacific Northwest in Vancouver, Washington. Located directly across from Columbia River, the huge facility comprised 180,000 square feet of climate-controlled manufacturing space and 12 large assembly bays within a seven-acre marina. The flagship facility is where Christensen constructed the majority of its almost fifty yacht fleet of up to 164-feet (50m) in length. Early in 2019, the yard announced that it was moving all production to its larger facility in Tennessee, which was founded in 2012.

Comprising of a 450,000 square foot climate-controlled facility with 13 large manufacturing and assembly bays within a 55-acre site on Tellico Lake, Tennessee, the larger facility allows Christensen to build yachts of any size without restriction. To date Christensen yachts have been built with the finest composite materials with a strength-to-weight ratio seven times stronger than steel and solid laminate, allowing for superior strength hull forms. The Tennessee facility also allows Christensen to build larger megayachts in steel.

Renowned for their high-quality craftsmanship and interior finish, Christensen builds are amongst some of the most highly sought-after superyachts for sale and charter. One element that differentiates Christensen from other yacht builders is the extent of the work completed in-house. From the elegant woodwork and elaborate stonework to the stainless steel finish and custom upholstery, the shipyard employs up to 120 artisans and boat builders in order to maintain the utmost build quality in a timely manner.

Carrying on the superb pedigree builds for which Christensen has become known, the group joined forces with Ocean Alexander Yachts in 2012 to build a series of semi-custom tri-deck superyachts. Designed with an efficient and effective layout, the semi-custom yacht series allows Christensen to deliver bespoke superyachts in a shorter build time than other vessels of the same size. With in-house experts in all fields, the fit and finish is unique to the client making for a bespoke vessel within a series.

Christensen Yachts

One of America’s biggest custom superyacht builders, Christensen Shipyards in Vancouver, Wash., is known for its artisans’ craftsmanship and painstaking attention to detail.

History of Christensen Yachts

Founder Dave Christensen’s first career was construction, which he pursued from the mid-1950s to the early 1980s, building both commercial and residential projects throughout the Pacific Northwest. After retiring from the construction business in 1982, he decided to build a yacht, but could not find a manufacturer that lived up to his exacting specifications. So he partnered with Westport Shipyard, which built him a hull, then personally completed the yacht’s fit and finish. The resulting luxury yacht was so successful, he incorporated Christensen Shipyards in 1986.

Dave Christensen continued at the helm for another quarter of a century, building ever-larger yachts, until he retired from his “second career” in 2008. The luxury superyacht shipyard he founded continues to build in his exacting tradition today under the management of CEO Joe Foggia.

Notable Launches

While Christensen has developed “series” hull moulds for composite yachts of different sizes up to 50 metres in length, each yacht it builds is fully custom and most feature the work of a noted interior designer. Recent notable luxury superyacht launches include American owner John Staluppi’s former 59.68-metre Casino Royale , which launched in 2008. The superyacht’s interior design was a collaboration between the Staluppi and Carol Williamson & Associates. Carol Williamson also created the interior design for the successful, black-hulled luxury charter yacht Odessa , a 48.77-metre Christensen custom yacht that launched in 2009.

In 2012, a new alliance between Ocean Alexander Yachts, Christensen, and interior designer Evan K. Marshall resulted in the launch of the 36.9-metre Ocean Alexander 120 Megayacht. This is the first in a planned series of tri-deck luxury superyachts ranging up to 47.2 metres.

Christensen Yachts for Sale

Christensen Shipyards, headquartered in Vancouver, Washington, specialized in crafting top-tier seagoing motor yachts, meticulously finished by skilled American craftsmen to meet the most exacting standards of quality.

Established in 1985 as Christensen Motor Yacht Corporation by Dave Christensen, a seasoned builder with a rich history of construction projects spanning from apartments to hospitals across the Pacific Northwest since 1955. Christensen’s journey into yacht construction stemmed from his desire to create vessels of superior quality. Initially collaborating with Westport Shipyards for hull construction, Christensen soon expanded, establishing his own facilities and molds by 1986. The evolution culminated in the renaming of the company to Christensen Shipyards, Ltd. in 1993.

The Christensen facility was over 180,000 square feet of climate-controlled manufacturing space along with a spacious seven-acre marina. Featuring 12 expansive manufacturing and assembly bays, each dedicated to specific construction operations such as electrical, metalwork, painting, cabinetry, stone and marble crafting, and upholstery. Notably, a newly expanded bay with an impressive 80-foot ceiling facilitated indoor yacht completion before launch. The enclosed and secured marina could host up to seven yachts, while the dry dock accommodated vessels weighing up to 400 tons. With a track record of delivering over 40 yachts ranging from 65 to 164 feet, Christensen continued to collaborate with esteemed interior designers like Carol Williamson & Associates to redefine luxury yacht craftsmanship.

Christensen has permanently closed its doors in 2020, creating a demand in the brokerage market due to their incredible legacy.

Learn More About Christensen And Find Your Next Boat

Christensen Yachts was born from a partnership between Dave Christensen and Westport shipyards, as the once construction industry icon looked for a yard to commission his personal boat. After several frustrating interviews at various factories, Dave decided to build it himself. Westport built the hull, while Dave did all of the finishing on his own. By the time the yacht was finished, Christensen was inundated with orders for boats and soon realized the opportunity.

Focusing on completely custom-built luxury yachts between 100-feet and 165-feet, Christensen soon made a name for itself as one of the top manufacturers every to come out of the U.S. The original shipyard was located in Vancouver, Washington and over the years produced over 120 motor yachts . Christensen was known to be a pioneer in using composite fiberglass in the construction process. In 2009, Christensen Yachts began the production of a superyacht facility on Tellico Lake in Tennessee. The facility remained unfinished until 2019, but is now home to Christensen where they have two yachts currently under construction.

Every Christensen Yacht splashed was built to the very best capabilities of the American shipyard. Only the finest materials were used and every hull would undergo a large-scale vacuum-bagging resin-infusion process for the perfect strength-to-weight ratio. Other innovative construction techniques have also greatly improved interest in the builder. For example, Christensen invested in their own comprehensive HVAC systems that replace copper nickel salt-water piping with composite piping which is easier for maintenance.

United Yacht Sales is committed to helping you find the perfect pre-owned Christensen Yacht for sale or helping you sell your existing one. Our network of over 175 brokers greatly increases your chances of a quick sale and our industry-leading support team ensures that it is marketed strategically and successfully.
