Lagoon 46 Review

The world premiere of the 46 ft. (14 m) sailing catamaran Lagoon 46 from the French shipyard Construction Navale Bordeaux (CNB) took place 4 years ago - in January 2019 in Düsseldorf. Information about the introduction of a new yacht from CNB caused not just a buzz, but a complete splash among the owners, designers and constructors of cats. After all, the previous model Lagoon 450 has long been a favorite among luxurious floating hotels, as the latest representatives of this line can be described. This catamaran has been a cruise favorite for many years and a leader in transatlantic competitions, including such a prestigious one as the Atlantic Rally of Cruisers.

It was also a treat due to the fact that the shipyard returned to the team of designers and naval architects who propelled CNB to its glory in the past. The architecture and exterior of the new model were handled by VPLP Design with Patrick le Quément, while the interior was designed by Nauta Design.

The hype reached a high level long before the premiere - CNB received dozens of applications for this new cat beforehand. And when the premiere took place, everyone who was looking forward to it realized that their hopes for some pleasant surprises were not in vain.

Lagoon 46 review by toprik team.

Even when approaching docked Lagoon 46 catamaran, without even entering the deck, the topRik team immediately noticed that the mast was carried aft with a significant offset even compared to the previous models 39, 40 and 42, which became the founders of this, as it turned out, successful shipyard experiment.

This was especially noticeable against the backdrop of the nearby Lagoon 50. We later appreciated this innovation when we were able to use a more powerful self-tacking jib, as well as a smaller, easier-to-handle mainsail.

Lagoon 46 Review by topRik Team

But the resemblance to the Lagoon 50 still manifested itself in the angular transom and the dynamic slope of the hardtop, in the large rectangular aft windows and in the fully glazed saloon, in the famous contours of the "lagoon" exterior.

The close proximity of these famous catamarans drew us on board with a desire to compare and find out if the architects and designers managed to provide the same comfort and luxury on a 46 ft. catamaran as on a 50 ft. boat.

Operated from the Flybridge, Observed from the Sunbed

When yachtsmen talk about comfort, they first of all mean the convenience of managing a catamaran. Therefore, the first area we go to is the control post. And here one of the features of this vessel immediately becomes apparent. It has excellent, although not perfect visibility. And this is with a reduced size, when compared to the Lagoon 50.

new lagoon 46 catamaran

The architects didn't waste a single inch of this reduced space to make the boat comfortable to drive. They provided access to the flybridge directly from the cockpit and from both sides. And behind the helmsman there is a huge sunbed, where the rest of the crew, guests or family can sunbathe and relax, in which case the skipper can be quickly provided with the necessary assistance when needed. You won't have to strain your vocal cords to call for assistants from the cabins or saloon - someone will definitely be basking in this natural solarium at all times.

new lagoon 46 catamaran

In addition, as it turned out, help may not be needed at all for a long time. Managing the catamaran is easy even for one person as all the controls, including winches, are within easy reach.

On the move, we appreciated both the location of the standing rigging near the stern and the new position of the mast. Although the previous three cats of the shipyard also featured a non-standard mast position, in Lagoon 46 the architects achieved the maximum balance of the center of gravity. We experienced the result of this achievement in practice when managing a sail wardrobe, the overall area of which was increased by 10 m². The rigging set also proved to be surprisingly powerful for a catamaran of this size. We got great pleasure from the boat’s ability to tack in the wind. This is despite the fact that the testing in the open ocean with serious winds was not an option. However, under a full mainsail and gennaker with a fair bit of wind, it was possible to achieve speeds of almost 9 knots.

A very sensitive steering wheel, an automatic jib and electric winches, an electric drive for the boom-sheet provide an excellent opportunity to easily cope with the controls alone.

The saloon control room that has a chartplotter, table, bookshelf and intercom is also easily accessible, has excellent visibility, and the layout ensures that no one will interfere with the skipper’s work.

Travel Comfort

As we looked at the control system first, we paid attention to the thoughtful access to the flybridge, where the helmsman's station is located.

Men appreciated the wide steps (especially those that lead from the transoms), which can confidently accommodate a size 47 foot. And all the crew members noted the wide passages across the deck.

new lagoon 46 catamaran

The aft cockpit is also spacious - several people can move freely at the same time without the risk of bumping into each other. From the cockpit there is free access to wide transoms.

There is also plenty of room in the bow cockpit. But the flybridge sunbathing area is simply amazing in its size and comfort. Hard to believe can't believe that this kind of freedom is offered on a 46 ft. catamaran.

new lagoon 46 catamaran

The fully glazed saloon and cabins with large portholes add to the feeling of complete freedom. Even being close to 2 meters tall, you do not feel at all that you are actually in the very limited space of a cruising catamaran.

By the way, you can participate in the organization of this space: the salon and cockpit, if desired, can be combined into a single area for various events.

new lagoon 46 catamaran

We will talk about how the happy owners of this floating luxury hotel can distribute the living space among its inhabitants a bit later. But remember – the option is available!

Of course, we appreciated the hydraulic platform with electric drive in the transom part of the cat. This detail not only gave us easy access to the water, but also expanded the zone of comfortable communication, which was really neat during one of our farewell evenings with friends on this amazing boat.

Do Not Deny Yourself Anything

After experiencing the excellent living and working conditions on Lagoon 46 for a couple of days, we decided that the shipyard designers were indeed guided by this phrase. Everything was provided here even for the most demanding and capricious cruise participants.

To be honest, there are not much capricious people in the topRik team. But from our point of view, we appreciated the presence of many lockers and cabinets, compartments under the folding seats in all areas of the boat. Here you can place all the necessary luggage for a long trip with a large group of people.

new lagoon 46 catamaran

At the same time, you will not have to deny yourself excesses too, not just the necessities - some of us have experience in organizing charters and it was noted that for this purpose or just for a large family or a group of friends, there is everything you need on the cat.

The aft cockpit is equipped with a bimini and protective sheets from rain and splashes. The dining area (or another place of rest) is equipped with a retractable sofa and a transforming table. When unfolded, this table can easily accommodate 12 people, and if you make some room, then even more. This is the case if you decide to have a party and invite the crew of a neighboring ship to visit. The number 12 is the maximum number of comfortable beds that can be equipped on Lagoon 46.

new lagoon 46 catamaran

The two-module galley for outdoor cooking is equipped with all necessary kitchen appliances. Optional additions are generally almost limitless - there would be a place for everyone. The galley is very conveniently located on the border of the saloon and the cockpit, and through the window, cooked dishes can be transferred from the saloon to the cockpit table.

new lagoon 46 catamaran

The large lounger in the cockpit can accommodate watchers waiting for their portion of delicious food. And to store a large number of supplies for tasty treats, a spacious refrigerator with a freezer is designed.

We have already sung the praises of the luxurious flybridge sunbathing area. The bow cockpit is an additional sunbed with comfortable modular sunbeds and a table, the role of which is played by a locker. Great place for an evening cocktail in an almost intimate setting.

Privacy in the cabin is excluded, since it is designed for 8 people, but if necessary and desired, it can accommodate more. The area is flooded with light, the supply of which is provided by large glazed screens. They also provide an all-round view.

Here you can dine, relax, party, using the aft cockpit and pneumatic platform. The folding table is surrounded by a corner sofa and a backless sofa. As already noted, under the seats there are places for luggage. The shelves above the cabinet can be used for albums, magazines and books. On the same side, opposite the corner sofa in our case, a large television screen was placed.

new lagoon 46 catamaran

Everyone noted that the unavoidable detail of the interior - the camouflaged part of the mast - does not interfere at all during movements. One of us, the especially broad-shouldered specimen, found the passage from the saloon to the cockpit a bit cramped. But apparently, this is a consequence of visiting the flybridge. After its spaciousness everything seems cramped.

Comfortable steps lead from the saloon to the cabins. Let us descend now...

You Can’t Forbid Living Beautifully

Since we had an option with the owner's cabin, you must understand who got it. But all the participants in the voyage were able to get acquainted with its luxury. Our skipper single-handedly occupied the entire starboard hull, since that is how the cabins are distributed in this layout. The owner's cabin is a comfortable accommodation, equipped with all the necessary attributes for a comfortable stay.

new lagoon 46 catamaran

You can start and end your day here in the bathroom with toilet and shower. An excellent sleeping place in the form of an island double bed will provide a restful sleep and good rest after work at the helm and with sails.

new lagoon 46 catamaran

All luggage will find a suitable place in the wardrobes and lockers. You do not have to fold clothes to save space - you can freely hang them in the closet. There is also plenty of room for other accessories to make sailing as comfortable as possible.

A writing desk and an additional sofa complete the furnishing of the owner's cabin.

new lagoon 46 catamaran

Others were accommodated in two double cabins in the bow and stern. Despite the fact that their area is half the size of the owner's cabin, there is a place for island beds and shower rooms with all the necessary hygienic amenities.

new lagoon 46 catamaran

Access to all sleeping places is provided from two sides. This is of great importance if the catamaran is intended for charter use. In this case, order an option for 4 double cabins, each of which has a private bathroom with all amenities for hygiene procedures.

All cabins are furnished with ample storage space for personal luggage. The cabins have excellent ventilation, a lot of light thanks to hatches and portholes.

The purpose of the topRik team was not only to find the merits and sing the praises to the architects and designers of Lagoon 46. We diligently looked for the flaws as well, in order to say “Aha! Nobody's perfect!" The search did not lead to anything until the flaw itself announced itself. One of us hit his hip on the corner of the table in an awkward turn. And this way we discovered that not all the furniture on the cat has rounded corners.

But speaking seriously, it seemed to us that some elements of the cat are dangerously close to water or poorly protected from water. We are talking about an additional electrical panel on the starboard side and a maintenance battery in the hold. But against all the advantages, these points look more like nit-picking.

Advantages of Lagoon 46

We would highlight the following main advantages of the cruising sailing catamaran Lagoon 46:

  • Quality, including the method of making the balsa, glass and polyester sandwich hulls.
  • Safety ensured by the use of materials that are resistant to corrosion and osmosis.
  • A well-thought-out control system, including the location and design of the mast with appropriate sailing equipment and rigging, a convenient distance between the easy-to-handle helm, electric winches and other elements of the control station.
  • Improved seaworthiness (maneuverability, performance, etc.) as a result of an improved control system and hull design.
  • Excellent organization of space, taking into account the reduction in the size of the vessel.
  • The unique comfort of being on board for both passengers and crew.
  • Versatility in the configuration of cabins, as well as the organization of space due to partitions.
  • Nearly unlimited optional upgrades for added comfort and safety of life and work on board.

Lagoon 46 Reviews by Professionals

Leading journalists of popular yachting media shared their impressions of the cruising sailing catamaran Lagoon 46.

  • Claire Mahon from Sailing Today took a short ride on her new cat.
  • Mark Pillsbury of Cruising World delivered it to Fort Lauderdale after the Miami International Boat Show.
  • TMG took the Editor of Cruising Helmsman Magazine - Phillip Ross - on a boating trip on their Lagoon 46.
  • But let’s first see what Massimo Gino from Nauta Design had to say based on his interview with Claire Mahon from Sailing Today.

Massimo Gino

Massimo mentions that considering the amount or superyacht project they are involved in, it’s the Beneteau group that always was a reliable partner since 2005. It really seemed like unachievable task – to make a new Lagoon in order to replace the best-selling 450 model. Then the question was asked: "What exactly makes a catamaran a Lagoon?" After this the core was there – perception of the brand, style and function were imagined, independent of technology or building techniques. 450’s features were updated and improved to allow Lagoon 46 to outshine the legend.

Claire Mahon

Claire also addressed the success of previous model 450 with almost 1000 models sold. Surely, it would be a tough act to follow, considering all the innovative techniques used in its production! Yet updated design and sail plan of Lagoon 46 are a game changer.

In Claire’s educated opinion, model 46 provides you with enough freedom on board to make you want to buy it instead of the predecessor.

Mark Pillsbury

But the 46 is a pretty sweet ride – as I found out when I tagged along on its delivery up to Fort Lauderdale after the show. As with its 40- and 50-foot siblings that were launched a year earlier, the mast on the 46 is stepped relatively far aft, allowing for a larger and more powerful self-tacking jib up forward, and a smaller and easier to handle mainsail.

Mark Pillsbury writes, that the ride was very pleasant as he was delivering Lagoon 46 to Fort Lauderdale – he particularly enjoyed new sailing equipment. He gives important point about the speed: when motored by two 57 HP Yanmars, it is about 8.5 knots. And when sailing close-hauled, the boat reached 9 knots. Even with the wind into the teens, with unfurled code zero, he went up a couple more knots. Also, the agility of the boat was proven in Fort Lauderdale’s narrow canals.

Phillip Ross

Phillip commends the movement of the mast aft, resulting in increased mainsail aspect ratio, easier mainsail handling and a larger headsail allowing for more foretriangle options and a self-tacking genoa.

The efficiency is increased since now the headsail can be drawn in closer to the center line without getting blocked by the rig. The overall sail area is increased by 11 sq. m. over the previous model 450 and handling it is actually easier thanks the centered mast.

The boat’s four cabins are also spacious and well-appointed, with plenty of storage space and comfortable beds. The master cabin is particularly impressive, with a large island bed and an en-suite bathroom with a separate shower. Other interior features include a fully equipped galley, air conditioning, and a state-of-the-art entertainment system. Overall, the interior of the Lagoon 46 is a true masterpiece of design and engineering, providing a luxurious and comfortable living space for its passengers.

Final Verdict: Pros and Cons of the Lagoon 46

While the Lagoon 46 is undoubtedly a luxurious and impressive catamaran, there are a few potential drawbacks to consider. One of the main concerns is the price, which may be out of reach for some buyers. Additionally, the boat’s size may make it difficult to maneuver in tight spaces or in rough weather conditions. However, these potential drawbacks are outweighed by the boat’s many benefits, including its spacious and luxurious interior, impressive performance, and state-of-the-art features. Overall, the Lagoon 46 is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a high-end catamaran that offers both comfort and performance on the water.

Boat Review: Lagoon 46

  • By Mark Pillsbury
  • Updated: June 27, 2019

Lagoon 46

Change is good! At least that’s what Lagoon Catamarans is banking on with its handsome new 46-footer, which had its North American launch this past winter at the Miami International Boat Show.

The newest model from longtime Lagoon collaborators VPLP and Nauta Design replaces the immensely popular Lagoon 450. For the better part of a decade, the 450 occupied the sweet spot in the company’s range of sailboats that runs from 38 to 77 feet. First launched in 2010, more than 745 of them were sold. By any definition, that’s a pretty impressive number, and the new model will have big shoes to fill.

RELATED: Lagoon 50 Catamaran Review

But the 46 is a pretty sweet ride—as I found out when I tagged along on its delivery up to Fort Lauderdale after the show. As with its 40- and 50-foot siblings that were launched a year earlier, the mast on the 46 is stepped relatively far aft, allowing for a larger and more powerful self-tacking jib up forward, and a smaller and easier to handle mainsail.

We had a heck of a day to go for a sailboat ride. An east-southeasterly breeze was blowing in the low 20s as we paused in the lee of Fisher Island to tuck in a reef and raise the square-top main before motoring the rest of the way out of Government Cut. Past the breakwater, we hooked a left, rolled out the self-tacking jib and headed for deeper water. For the record, with the throttles wide open, the boat’s two 57 hp Yanmar diesels pushed us along at 8.5-knots. More to the point, with the motors cut, our speed over ground hovered right around 9 knots closehauled. And by the time we’d gained enough sea room to crack off to a reach, though the wind had settled down into the teens, we still managed to add a couple more knots to our pace by unfurling the code zero.

The entire trip was on port tack, so I can’t talk tacking angles, but I can say once in Fort Lauderdale’s narrow canals—and when it came time to dock—the boat proved quite agile under power.

Underway, the flybridge on the 46 is the place to be. The boat we sailed had a hard Bimini top for shade (a canvas one is an option) and lots of cushioned lounging space just aft of the wheel. Offset to port, the winches are close at hand for the skipper, and all sail control lines lead to them. On the hook or dock, if you’re looking for sun and quiet, there’s a small cockpit forward by the trampoline. A much larger and more spacious social area is aft, shaded by the flybridge. The cockpit sports a couch across the transom and a table with foldout leaves and L-shaped seating forward, to port. Opposite, there’s more room for lounging on a wide daybed.

Just inside the saloon, a roomy galley is located adjacent to the door and sliding window, which when open, allows treats to be passed in and out. A nav station is forward to port, and across from it, there’s another dining table. In between, the center forward window slides down and opens onto the foredeck. Speaking of windows, the saloon is surrounded by them so daylight pours in.

Below, VPLP introduced pronounced chines that flare outward just above the waterline and considerably add to the living space in each hull. This is most noticeable up forward, where bunks are typically packed into the narrowing portion of a cat’s hull. On the 46, though, the forward berth on the three-cabin model is a full-size island queen, identical to the one aft. (A four-cabin layout is available as well.)

Adding to the sense of roominess below, blackwater tanks for the heads are located under the sole rather than mounted on the side of the hull, and bulkheads in the owner’s quarters have been eliminated.

Large rectangular hull ports make the guest cabins feel light and spacious; in the owner’s quarters, they make things feel downright elegant. The space is well-allocated and includes a queen berth aft and a large set of drawers and bookshelves amidships. Forward, a couch and desk occupy the outboard side of the hull and lockers line the inside, just aft of the roomy head and separate stall shower.

The base price for the 46 is $620,000. Fit out like the one we sailed—solar power, electric winches, watermaker, air conditioning, genset and code zero, to name a few of the toys—the bill comes to about $740,000. And for that, you’ll get a very comfortable cat to call your home.

Lagoon 46,

Freedom, innovation and elegance are the main themes at the forefront of the evolution of the Lagoon 46. This model reinforces everything that puts the Lagoon brand at the top of its industry. Not only has Lagoon proved once again that comfort and performance go hand in hand, but with Lagoon 46, they also show that elegance and design does not have to be compromised in the process. Elegance and simplicity are the key focus points in the design of the Lagoon 46 and they permeate every aspect of both interior and exterior. This model is perfectly able to stand her ground beside the larger models thanks to the superior design that somehow puts her in a class by herself.

The Lagoon 46 is characterized by large and generous spaces, all easily accessible and carefully planned out. The comfortable and spacious flybridge, accessible from two points, is no doubt one of the main highlights on this model. Up here, you have great visibility, while also being protected from both sun and wind, and it’s a wonderful place to just be, whether you are maneuvering the vessel or simply relaxing. The forward cockpit, another highlight, is great for lounging with friends and family in the late afternoon and it may be transformed into a sunbathing area for ultimate comfort during daytime. It also has large storage areas and windows connecting to the interior.

The moment you step inside, you get the impression of being on a much bigger yacht. The area is truly spacious, filled with natural light from large windows all around. Lagoon is dedicated to making use of every single space aboard the Lagoon 46 to provide as much storage as possible, a commitment reflected in every living space aboard this catamaran. From the impressively spacious cabins and their respective bathrooms to the multipurpose cockpits, you will find possibilities for storage in the most unexpected places.

DESCRIPTION

As far as performance, this model utilizes all the latest innovations within the new Lagoon generation of catamarans. The mast has been moved further aft, which provides higher aspect ratio and an increased efficiency. The shorter boom also makes the boat easier to handle. This catamaran is 12,000 lbs lighter than the Lagoon 50, so she can easily pick up speed on the water. Feel the wind in your face and experience cutting-edge performance and all the latest innovations for yourself with this Lagoon model.

BOAT TEST: NEW LAGOON 46 (WITH GALLERY)

Lagoon yachts is the market leader when it comes to cruising catamarans and their new 46 sits plumb in  the middle of the range. claire mahon takes it for a spin..

new lagoon 46 catamaran

After almost 1,000 units sold, Lagoon is replacing their classic Lagoon 450 model with the new Lagoon 46. While the 450 may be a tough act to follow, the 46 benefits from the yard’s innovative construction techniques and years of feedback from dealers and owners. With a larger sail plan and updated design, the 46 looks poised to take top place in the hearts of both owners and charter users.

(Review continues below gallery – scroll down)

new lagoon 46 catamaran

Lagoon has been building catamarans for too long to make a false move. That’s why when the management felt that their tried and true 450 model, long a cruising favourite and a winner of transatlantic events such as the ARC, was getting near retirement age they went back to a team that has designed many successful models for them: Nauta Design for interiors and VPLP Design with Patrick le Quément for naval architecture and exteriors. Why change the players when the team gets such good results?

new lagoon 46 catamaran

We speak with Nauta Design’s Massimo Gino about his work with Lagoon: “Along with the many custom superyacht projects we do, we have been collaborating with the Beneteau Group since 2005. When we were asked to do a new Lagoon to replace the best selling 450 at first we thought- mission impossible. How can you improve on a legend? But then we asked ourselves: ‘What makes a catamaran a Lagoon?’ Thinking about market perception of the brand, we thought about its important heritage of style, function and dependability. Lagoon catamarans are known to be solid, seaworthy and excellent for family use. While these are the core values, technology never stays still and we knew that with recent advances in hull shapes and building techniques and materials we would be able to update and upgrade some features of the 450 to create a 46 that really would be an improvement on the legend.

Homely minimalism

“While family and friends are key ingredients of the Lagoon formula, our recent projects for them have upped the level of luxury. We thought that this was the direction the 46’ should move in too; we wanted to introduce new comforts while leaving the best ‘Lagoon’ values of solidity and saftey intact,” Gino says. “VPLP’s stylish new exterior design added some spaces to work with and we used every centimetre to improve on a boat, the 450, that was already perfect in many ways.

new lagoon 46 catamaran

“When you think ‘Lagoon’ you think ‘family’ and you think ‘home,” Gino continues. “We call the look aboard the 46 ‘homely minimalism.’ To achieve it we used the same styling and materials we used aboard our recent Lagoon launches, the 50 and the 77: walnut and larch woods in a chocolate brown and cream palette with warm, soft contrasts. We also used indirect lighting so that spaces have suffused, relaxing light that is balanced and evenly distributed. In this interior beauty and comfort meet space and light to create luxury, it’s not about flashy materials.”

Boarding the 46 in La Rochelle, France, close to where Lagoon has is production lines, the sense of openness is surprising. “We thought hard about the perception of available space,” says Gino. “Décor and style are important, but light and views are also key. Window size and height open up sightlines and let a space breathe.”

new lagoon 46 catamaran

The wraparound windows in the saloon make the space seem huge and the aft guest cockpit can be lived as a continuous unit with the saloon thanks to windows and doors that slide open wide. The cockpit has a couch, a foldout portside table with adjustable banquette seating and a lounging area starboard. Add to these the living area in the saloon with L shaped couches and a pouf and more than room for a family, you’ll find there’s room for a crowd. ”We designed the “J” shaped galley next to the cooking station in the aft cockpit so that serving is fast and easy and everything that you need is close at hand,” continues Gino. “With the deck and the floor on the same level the whole area becomes a unit where movement between indoors and outdoors flows easily.” Passing food and dishes between the cockpit and the galley is easy thanks to slide back windows at counter top level and there is even the option for an opening window fore in the saloon, a clever touch that puts the large foredeck lounging area into easy communication with the galley and the rest of the boat.

If the foredeck aboard the Lagoon 46 is no longer an isolated spot, sometimes it is nice to have your own private refuge aboard. This is why the cabins aboard the 46 are all comfortable, with large island beds, excellent natural light and ventilation and en suite facilities with large showers. “We designed different cabin layouts to offer a range of options. In the three-cabin version the owners have the luxury of the entire starboard hull for themselves with a double bed, lots of storage and a toilet space that is separate from the shower. All cabins get lots of natural light and air through hatches and large hull windows with opening portholes. And since connectivity is a part of life that owners don’t want to give up even when they’re at sea, the owner’s cabin has an office space and the saloon and all of the cabins have USB connections,” concludes Gino. Which is a nice touch, but it might make it a bit harder to convince children that a sailing vacation is a necessary digital detox.

Enhanced performance

Liveability is an important element of a catamaran-based experience, but it’s only part of the picture; while some Lagoons are used for easy-going island hopping, there are also many owners who want performance. Seeing how Lagoon cats are fixtures at events such as the ARC, naval architects VPLP Design concentrated on improving performance when designing the 46. “The challenge was to create a ‘better boat’ than the 450, so we concentrated on performance and seaworthiness. We brought our years of experience in designing top racing boats to this project to find the perfect balance between speed, autonomy, reliability and ease of use,” says Vincent Lauriot Prèvost, co-founder of VPLP. “By positioning the mast a bit further aft, at 53% of the hull length, we created a good ratio of hull length to displacement speed that also reduces pitching.  This was a structural challenge because the mast doesn’t rest on a partition wall.” In fact, it rests on a slender mirrored column that aligns with a side of the dining table at the centre of the saloon, a solution that leaves the space wide open and airy and offers some performance advantages too as Prèvost explains: “When we designed boats with masts resting on a partition wall, self-tacking jibs were actually too small and very difficult to operate. By moving the mast further back and increasing the headsail’s LP, we get more a powerful headsail, especially when combined with a self-tacking jib. We are confident that this new sail structure performs better than the rigging arrangement we used in the past.”

new lagoon 46 catamaran

The Lagoon 46’s 140.1 square meter sail plan sees the mainsail mounted on a shorter canoe boom for easier manoeuvring. “The mainsail’s aspect ratio is slightly better than that of Lagoon 450 but the performance gain is much higher,” adds Prèvost. Owners can chose a square topped main and a FlatWinder powered block for the traveller. The furling jib is self-tacking for easy upwind sailing and the forward triangle is large to allow owners a choice of downwind sails. “We were aiming for a cruising speed of nine to fourteen knots and have been very happy with the results,” says Prèvost. “Thanks to improvements in construction techniques we have also been able to keep the 46’s weight down: it’s only slightly more heavy that the 450 even though the sail plan is larger.” But now it’s time to put the cat to the test.

While a comfortably outfitted catamaran has a way of calling sun and fun to mind, the day’s conditions aren’t exactly Caribbean. We leave port under a chilly Atlantic drizzle and just eight knots of breeze. Even though these conditions are not ideal for a good run on the water, we get the sails up easily and tack at the press of a button. It’s easy to imagine two couples or even a couple with children handling the boat in perfect safety. Our performance is not bad at all; if anything it’s the weather that could use a little improvement. For those used to a monohull’s heel, sailing a cruising catamaran at almost any speed will feel a bit flat footed, but there is something to say for stability, especially if you’re vacationing and want to chill more than to be challenged.

Uncomplicated sail handling

Moving around the 46 is as easy as it is to get her sailing. The centrally placed flybridge helming station has access points both from the aft cockpit and from the starboard deck. Even in the cloud, visibility is excellent and the deck layout, with winches and locks that are all close at hand, is perfect for carefree, uncomplicated sail handling. Even the windlass can be controlled remotely from the flybridge.

But this area is something more than just a helm station: in keeping with the 46’s vocation for fun in company the flybridge also has large sun pads aft of the helm seat meaning that helming won’t necessarily be a lonely experience. The whole area can be shaded by a spray hood or a rigid bimini and there are even thoughtful touches like drinks holders close at hand.

new lagoon 46 catamaran

Patrick le Quément, former head of design at Renault, designed the 46’s pure, linear look with vertical lines that combine strength and finesse. “In association with VPLP our desire was to increase the emotional impact of Lagoon catamarans, giving them greater charm to accompany the technological innovations that have made the brand an archetype. We worked to create an atmosphere that would be equally harmonious indoors and out and I think that we have created the perfect link between interior and exterior,” he says.

Excellent living spaces, secure solidity, sailing performance and easy connection between interior and exterior are all wonderful features, but what really makes a seafaring vacation special is safe and easy access to the water. This the 46 provides: there are just three wide and easy to use steps that lead down from the aft cockpit to the water and for the tender, owners have the option of choosing a conventional davit or a hydraulic Tenderlift platform. Those that chose the platform option have the added advantage of an extra living space at the stern when the tender is launched on top of the already generous aft cockpit space.

Lagoon catamarans may be produced in series but, as the saying goes, they break the mould. Potential owners can rest assured that in the 46 they are buying a well-tested and carefully thought out catamaran that benefits from the experience gained in building the 450 while adding technological and design features that make it the evolution of the species. With subtle tweaks like USB connectivity and more luxurious styling, the 46 has what it takes to accommodate the needs of a modern family. And with a more powerful sail plan and lighter construction techniques, the 46 will be a joy to sail whether you chose to island hop or to cross an ocean.

new lagoon 46 catamaran

Claire’s verdict:

When you decide that it’s time to pack it in and take the family out to sea, the Lagoon 46 is a cat that will give you the freedom you want. And when Lagoon decides that it is time to literally break the mould that has been used to produce almost 1,000 Lagoon 450’s they are ready with the 46, a catamaran that has everything it will take to make her extremely popular predecessor a fond memory from the past.

If you are searching for a catamaran with amazing sailing performance and enough space for you and your friends, be sure to check out the Lagoon 46. Find out why she should be your holiday yacht in Yacht4Less’s comprehensive review below.

lagoon 46 bow

A sailing holiday is all about that special and liberating feeling. That is why the interior of the Lagoon 46 is very open, making you feel as if you are one with the ocean. Lagoon promises to keep designing catamarans with bright saloons and 360 panoramic views so you can enjoy the colorful scenery wherever you are on board.

The U-shaped galley was designed so that socializing with friends at the aft cockpit while cooking is very easy. The galley comes with a 4 burner stove, dishwasher, lots of storage, and most importantly, enough refrigerators to keep all of your food and drinks coolled. Did you know that the Lagoon 46 has also got a sliding large front window which allows you to easily pass on drinks to friends at the bow as well?

The cabins are very spacious, offering more than enough storage for all belongings. One of the many beautiful and new characteristics which this catamaran model offers is that all beds (in both aft and bow cabins) are the same size - queen beds.

lagoon 46 galley

She is a 5-star hotel floating on water. No matter which version you choose (3 or 4 cabin version), each cabin has its own bathroom and toilet.

lagoon 46 toilet

The 3 cabin owners version has an enormous owner's cabin on the starboard side, with 2 same size cabins on the port side. The 4 cabin version has 4 large cabins.

We decided to divide the exterior into 3 parts and give you a walkthrough of each. These are the places you will mostly be staying at while on board, so let's get into detail:

lagoon 46 cockpit

  • Flybridge - the bench seat is large enough for the skipper and guests to be together while sailing. The wide cushions on the flybridge can be transformed into a seating or tanning area, making this area very customizable. The views from up here are the best, so if you are looking for the best place to relax on board, it would most definitely be there.
  • Bow cockpit - typical for a Lagoon catamaran, you will find the nets connecting the two hulls of the boat. With a large seating area for socializing, there is a newly added small coffee table where you can enjoy a glass of wine when anchored in a relaxing and calm bay.

new lagoon 46 catamaran

Even though she is a 46, the overall length is just under 46’, 45'11'' (13.99m). Her beam is 7.96m and her draft is 1.35m. This allows for anchoring in more shallow waters closer to the beach. This model is often equipped with a watermaker, in which case guests do not have to stress about water at all. She can accommodate up to 12 people so the size of the water tanks (2x300l) is more than sufficient. With 2 fuel tanks, each holding up to 520l of fuel, guests are spared of searching for fuel stations during their holiday as enough fuel fits for a weeks worth of sailing.

lagoon 46 aft cabin

The Lagoon 46 has 2 single cabins at the bow which can be used by the crew (skipper and hostess or cook), or a small child. Find out more about skippered charters , and fully crewed charters . If you prefer to sail with a professional crew, Yacht4Less can help you find your charter crew.

As she is lighter than her predecessors, she is able to reach higher speeds. Under power with the standard 2x57 HP engines, she can go up to 8.5 knots if you really push her. Usually you will go up to 7 knots and will still be able to enjoy the noticeable quieter engines.

Under sails, she can go up to 13 knots. Lagoon 46 has the mast moved backwards towards the aft, allowing for more stable and less rocky sailing, minimizing the ‘‘up-and-down’ feeling. As she is a big and powerful catamaran, sailing is made easier with her self tacking jib.

Depending on the time of year, charter prices range from €5400 (£4500) in pre and post season, and up to €12000 (£10000) in high season in Croatia. Prices in Greece and Italy this year are very similar, ranging from €6000 (£5050) to €11,500 (£9600). Keep in mind that these are bareboat prices. Skipper, crew, and extras can be ordered additionally. In high season, daily skippers rates can range from €180 to €200 (average £160), and daily hostesses rates from €120 to €150 (average £110) per day. This beauty is not only spacious and comfortable, she offers impressive designs throughout the interior and exterior. The salon is large and airy, the designs are modern and the layout makes the boat very functional. Each part of the catamaran was designed to perfection and space was used up wisely, creating the ideal catamaran for your sailing holiday.
