Due to the international and fluid nature of the yachting business and the fact there is no global central industry listing service to which all charter yachts subscribe it is impossible to ascertain a truly up-to-date view of the market. We are a news and information service and not always informed when yachts leave the charter market, or when they are recently sold and renamed it is not clear if they are still for charter. Whilst we use our best endeavors to maintain accurate information, the existence of a listing on this website should in no way supersede official documentation supplied by representatives of a yacht.

Inside the rebuild of the 80m iconic classic superyacht Talitha

Related articles, superyacht directory.

The tale of the 80 metre Talitha began in 1929 when the yacht – originally known as Reveler – was commissioned by the chairman of the Packard automobile company, Russell Alger, to be built by the German shipyard Krupp Germaniawerft with designs by Cox & Stevens . Following Alger’s death shortly after her launch, she changed hands numerous times and was requisitioned for use as a gunboat by the US Navy in World War II, before being reconverted into a yacht in 1949.

Undergoing several changes of ownership and refits, the vessel was eventually restored to its original lines in 1984, thanks to Australian entertainment tycoon Robert Stigwood. Following a series of mechanical issues, which resulted in the yacht being laid up in Lisbon, Jezebel (as she was then known), was sold to the reclusive American-born British petroleum industrialist, J Paul Getty. After languishing in the River Fal in Cornwall, UK for several years under the care of a skeleton crew, Talitha’s three-year full rebuild finally kicked off in 1991 at DML (Devonport Management Limited)- her owner was adamant such work should take place at a British shipyard.

Legendary superyacht designer Jon Bannenberg was given the whitest of carte blanches for Talitha G’s interiors, with Getty adopting a distinctively hands-off approach – he didn’t visit the vessel until launch day. He did however pay a visit to the complete mock-up of the owner’s cabin – complete with both marble-clad bathrooms, which was built at Ashby & Horner in Essex.

The project was to design an “entirely new interior” for an “entirely new boat” according to Jon’s son, Dickie Bannenberg, who served as project manager during the build and now heads up the Bannenberg & Rowell design studio in London. He explains: “A huge amount of the steel plating was changed but it was all done to the original method using rivets, with welders from all around Plymouth called up out of retirement to help.”

One of the key challenges was trying to “create something so immaculate within what was essentially a naval dockyard,” he says. “The processes were quite bureaucratic and very different from a conventional shipyard,” he continues.” Indeed, Bannenberg recalls his father being waylaid by the Ministry of Defence Police every time he attempted to enter the dockyard’s secure perimeter fence due to his Australian passport.

For Dickie Bannenberg, Talitha represented a “time capsule in the best sense” capturing what it would have been like to own a yacht in the pre-war years. The interior features myrtle and mahogany woods, alongside details such as a Turkish-themed carpet, monkey fists, cannon legs, cricket balls, reclaimed skylights, specially recast Sue et Mare door handles from 1925 and a carefully curated art collection.

Following her low-key launch ceremony (complete with fish pie, mugs of beef tea and cheese straws), Talitha made a brief stop in the Thames, before heading to the Caribbean. Charted repeatedly by Hollywood stars throughout the 1990s, Talitha split her time between the Caribbean and the Mediterranean and was also graced by Prince Philip for consecutive years, who stayed on board in Cowes during the absence of HMY Britannia.

Fast forward to 2021, it’s clear that the spirit of joie de vivre on board Talitha remains. Now under the ownership of Getty’s family (he passed away in 2003), Talitha’s crew is currently engaged in a virtual game of battleships with the Amels’ yacht Sixth Sense, in which crew can ‘fire a shot’ at the opposing vessel once they have completed an exercise task – 1000 squats, 300 burpees and so on.

As her long-serving captain, Guy Morrall explains: “ Talitha enjoys a challenge, whether it be Rowing for Haiti, Lift Your Ship, Whatnot2Waste, or battleships. The crew also loves cricket, stemming from Getty’s love affair with the game, with memorable moments including playing against Prime Ministers and a match in Antigua where the first over was bowled by Curtly Ambrose.”

TALITHA (ex TALITHA G) is a historic 80m (262' 5") classic motor yacht built in 1929 by Krupp and reconditioned by Devonport with interior design by Jon Bannenberg. She can accommodate up to 12 guests in 6 cabins in glorious luxury and elegant style.

NOTABLE FEATURES: ~Jacuzzi ~ Card room ~Elevator serving all decks ~Bar ~Piano ~Open fireplaces ~Large swim platform ~Very large selection of water toys ~Stabilization system

A lot of attention to detail has been paid to her interior which is a combination of exquisite art-deco features and modern systems and functionality. It retains all the charm of the 1930s with a lovely salon and bar, open fireplaces, a luxurious library, antique bronze skylights, a card room, use of rich myrtle, mahogany and oak veneers as well as inlaid marquetry throughout. There is also a central elevator that serves all decks.

Her decks are large and unique and offer guests multiple opportunities for relaxing and getting together with loved ones. The funnel deck includes a secret viewing point and there is a cushioned bowsprit hammock as well as a lounging spot in the fan tail aft of the main deck. The upper deck offers guests a Jacuzzi aft of the alfresco dining area as well as a saloon and bar. The main deck also offers a sun lounging area and superb seating for all to relax.

Talitha remains the epitome of the classic motor yacht as she sails on past her 80th anniversary. Meticulously rebuilt in her entirety in 1994, she offers all the charm, polish and style of a classic London hotel. Incomparable standards of service with the very latest technology on board mean that superyacht Talitha offers her guests the perfect cruise.

TALITHA began life in 1927 on the drawing boards of the distinguished naval architects Cox & Stevens who were considered the leading yacht designers of their day. The yacht was launched in 1930 as MY REVELER. During 60 years, she changed name and owner on regular basis, until in 1993, after considerable reconstruction at the DML Devonport shipyard in Plymouth, UK, and with a design by Jon Bannenberg, she emerged under the present owners in her present incarnation as MY TALITHA G, then named TALITHA. Since then she has undergone numerous smaller refits, repairs and paint finishes, including a completely new wheelhouse installed in 1999 but her shape and interior layout is essentially unchanged in 12 years.

The current owners enjoy the yacht and have invested heavily in her, keeping her maintained structurally and cosmetically to a very high standard and ensuring that she is completely up to date with her navigation, communications and entertainment technology. Today, 75 years after her maiden launch, it’s fair to say that she’s in the best shape she’s ever been.

Talitha: Why this classic motor yacht is an all-time great

  • Superyachts

With the smoothest of sheerlines, Talitha is the epitome of a classic motor yacht

If you had to conjure up a classic motor yacht from fundamental elements, you wouldn’t be far away from creating Talitha .

Those funnels, that stylishly flared clipper bow, the traditional counter stern – all that’s needed is Noel Coward in pressed whites and a reefer jacket, smoking a pipe and directing crew operations from the bridge.

Launched between the wars from the Krupp yard in Kiel to designs by Cox & Stephens of New York, after being commissioned by Russell Alger of the Packard Car Company, this superyacht has had a wandering life.

She started life with the suitably Jazz Age name of MV Reveler , soon passing into the hands of Charles McCann of the F. W. Woolworth retail firm (and renamed Chalena ).

She served as gunboat in World War II as USS Beaumont , with armaments mounted fore and aft, providing a rare Krupp contribution the Allied effort.

Talitha Getty Superyacht

The Classic Talitha Yacht

The Talitha is a classic superyacht built by Krupp Germaniawerft, Germany, in 1930. Despite several restorations and refits, she has retained much of her Art Deco charm and boasts open fireplaces, Lalique glass doors, exquisite examples of marquetry and a wealth of period art and furnishings. The Talitha is currently owned by the Getty family and is available year-round for Mediterranean charters.

The yacht measures 262 feet in length and features six elegant staterooms (including a full-width master cabin), a cinema, deck Jacuzzi, exercise equipment, wi-fi, a couple of tenders and a plethora of water toys. The yacht is crewed by a team of 18, including 2 chefs and an IT / AV engineer.

Talitha Superyacht

Pre-war History

The Talitha – initially named Reveler – was commissioned by Russell Alger Junior, Vice President of the Packard Motor Car Company . Unfortunately Alger Junior died in 1930 and never got to experience life on board his yacht. A year later, Charles McCann (son-in-law of business magnate F.W. Woolworth) purchased the boat and renamed her Chalena . The yacht changed hands again in 1940 when she was bought by Leon Mandel, part of the family that owned the Mandel Brothers department store in Chicago.

Following the outbreak of WWII and the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Talitha was requisitioned by the US Maritime Commission and in June 1942 entered service as a gunboat with armory, depth charges and a crew of 110. She survived the war without incident and in 1946 was decommissioned and returned to private ownership.

Talitha Interior

The Robert Stigwood Years

Robert Stigwood – the Australian impresario and producer of Saturday Night Fever – bought the yacht in 1983 from Greek businessman Marias Embiricos. Embiricos had owned the yacht since 1957, but during that time it had been neglected and fallen into disrepair. Stigwood renamed the yacht Jezebel and promptly spent millions transforming her into a work of art.

The restoration was done in Malta and kicked off with a re-design of the yacht's distinctive clipper bow. Two spruce masts replaced a metal one and teak decks were added. Next came new engine room equipment, a satellite communications system and air conditioning. The interiors were then refurbished to evoke the elegance and charisma of the 1930s. Furnishings included fabrics from London, antiques from France, marble from Italy, oriental rugs and a mahogany grand piano. Stigwood boasted that she was the most luxurious classic motor yacht afloat, and in 1985 the New York Times described her as a "floating fantasy".

It evokes another age of shipbuilding when the clippers reigned. It's like the Parthenon, showing off lovely, immutable laws of esthetics.

Christopher Williams, Captain of the Jezebel

But the magic wasn't to last. In 1988 the Jezebel eased into Lisbon with crankshaft failure and soon after was laid up on the River Fal in southwest England. It was at this point that she came to the attention of her next owner, John Paul Getty II.

The Getty Family

After purchasing the yacht, John Getty commissioned another round of extensive restorations, this time under the guidance of world-renowned designer Jon Bannenberg . The project was carried out at Devonport in Plymouth and is considered one of the standouts of Bannenberg's career. Major structural alterations were introduced, twin 1400hp Caterpillar engines were installed, and interiors were re-styled with Art Deco and Art Nouveau highlights, original 1920s skylights and a collection of art supplied by Christopher Gibbs .

The work was completed in 1993, at which time the yacht was re-christened after Getty's late wife, Talitha . But not everyone agreed with the re-design. Design purists and staff who'd sailed aboard Robert Stigwood's Jezebel opposed much of Bannenberg's work. In particular, criticism was directed at Bannenberg's decision to replace the original funnel with a pair of stumps and to extend the wheelhouse (which previously had stood alone in front of the funnel) along much of the deck. Critics felt these changes destroyed the yacht's integrity and compromised her graceful appearance.

Talitha Bathroom

The Talitha   For Charter

The Getty family have been operating the Talitha as a charter yacht for many years and she has proven to be one of the most successful vessels of her kind. She is often fully booked (sometimes for several months in advance) and her guest list includes Hollywood celebrities such as Steven Spielberg, Tom Cruise and Francis Ford Coppola.

The yacht's appeal is easy to understand. With her spacious interiors, luxurious guest rooms, period features and open fireplaces, she's the ideal choice for relaxing or entertaining friends and family. She comes complete with a modern stabilization system, wi-fi, air conditioning and a deck Jacuzzi to relax in and soak up the views after a long day at sea. The Talitha is also wheelchair-friendly, and her designers have paid close attention to accessibility.

AUTHENTIC RESTORATION

Under the guidance of legendary designer Jon Bannenberg, she was painstakingly restored to her former glory, with both exterior and interior redesign and brand new engines. The addition of a pair of funnels and an extended wheelhouse was at the time criticized by many, but Bannenberg’s vision proved them wrong when the renamed Talitha G (named after Getty’s second wife) was relaunched to great acclaim, with more than a nod to her 1930s design.
