Nautor's Swan Yachts for Sale

The Nautor’s Swan shipyard is located in the small Finnish town of Pietarsaari, just a short distance from the Arctic Circle. On this icey stretch of coast, Nautor’s Swan have been building boats since 1966 and the Swan range is known throughout the world. In a build environment where temperatures can fall to minus 30 degrees celsius, and the sea can be frozen for up to five months of the year, advanced engineering excellence is a core part of the yard’s DNA.

Nautor’s Swan handles everything from the design to the finest details in a fully integrated in-house building process. The smaller Nautor’s Swan hulls, for cruising yachts, are hand laid-up and vacuum-infused, while the larger models are constructed in foam-core carbon, which has huge weight-saving benefits.

Swan yacht buyers can also enjoy membership of ‘Club Swan’ – a non-profit organization for past, present and future Swan sailing yacht owners. The Club organizes various regattas, including the ‘Rolex Swan Cup’, the ‘Swan European Regatta’ and the ‘Swan American Regatta’ and these are run in association with the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the Royal Yacht Squadron of Cowes and the New York Yacht Club, respectively.

Today, with more than 50 years’ of heritage, Nautor’s Swan is globally recognized as an undisputed leader in the international sailing market.

History of Nautor’s Swan Yachts

The Nautor’s Swan Shipyard was founded in 1966 by Pekka Koskenkyla, a man with an inspiring vision to produce high-quality, high-performance sailing yachts for those passionate about cruising, racing and seeking contact with the ocean and nature. Pekka, educated in the USA, had the foresight to engage Sparkman & Stephens of New York, one of the most acclaimed yacht designers at the time, to design the first sailing yacht. The vessel was built in fiberglass and trimmed with wood – materials which would dominate the production of vessels in the years to come.

The first sailing yacht model from the Nautor’s Swan shipyard was the Swan 36, and this led to the Swan 37 and Swan 43, with the latter winning the Admiral’s Cup in 1969.

That same year, fate’s fickle hand dealt the Nautor’s Swan yard a catastrophic blow. The Assembly Hall caught fire and burnt to the ground, destroying with it a dozen hulls in various stages of production. Pekka was forced to sell stakes in the company to finance the yard’s rebuild and see production resumed.

When the yard was re-established, the larger and more elegant Swan 55 and Swan 65 yachts were born. Partnering cruising capability with racing prowess for the typical owner and recreational yachtsman, the designs were immensely popular. Testament to their racing ability, it was a Swan 65 (named SAYULA II) that won the first Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973/74.

In the late 70’s and early 80’s, Nautor’s Swan engaged naval architect Ron Holland as their designer of choice. Holland designed five boats for the yard, of which approximately 300 units were produced.

The mid to late 80s saw Swan enter another new era of design, this time with the appointment of German Frers. Along with a string of great successes in models under 80 foot (24m), Frers was also responsible for Swan’s first Maxi models; the Swan 80, Swan 90, Swan 100, Swan 105, Swan 110 and Swan 115 – with the 115 seeing the yard cross over into superyacht territory.

Frers’ contribution to Nautor’s Swan also permitted them entrance to the ‘one design’ racing sector, with the design of the Swan 45 in 2001. This was followed by the ‘Club Swan 42’ in 2005 which was developed in association with the New York Yacht Club.

In 2002, a new yard, close to the sea, was opened in Jakobstad. The new yard is dedicated to the assembly of the Maxi Swans, building the Swan 60 through to the Swan 115.

In 2017, Nautor’s Swan opened their Boatbuilding Technology Center. Here, there are facilities dedicated to joinery and high-tech lamination, a post-cure oven, painting halls, and areas for warehousing and logistics. The close proximity of the engineering and manufacturing departments results in an efficiency that is rarely seen.

Nautor’s Swan has been controlled and managed by Leonardo Ferragamo and his group of investors since 1998.

The Nautor’s Swan collection

Known today as ‘Swans’, the modern yachts built by Nautor’s Swan owe their success and acclaim to the original Swan 36. This first design, which featured a number of significant innovations, offered a level or performance and safety that equalled that of traditional wooden vessels yet the lighter fiberglass hull provided greater steering ability and enhanced living space. The Swan 36 marked the beginning of what would become one of the most prestigious boat yards in the world.

The Swans of the ‘70s and ‘80s were designed by the award-winning naval architect Ron Holland. German Frers took over as Swan’s naval architect of choice from the mid to late 80s, and he designed many highly successful models under 80 foot (24m) for the shipyard.

Swan’s first Maxi yacht models were also designed by Frers: the Swan 80, Swan 90, Swan 100, Swan 105, Swan 110 and Swan 115. The 115 brought Nautor’s Swan into the superyacht sector and the skills of Frers’ have again been employed for the design of Swan’s latest sailing yacht, the Swan 120.

The Nautor Swan 48 is an iconic class that embodies all the qualities for which Nautor is renowned: intelligent design, superb build quality, exhilarating and rewarding sailing performance, comfortable fast cruising, and the potential to participate in regattas. This class has proven to be immensely popular, with over 60 hulls currently navigating the waters. MIDNIGHT SWAN, designated 48/227, was delivered to its current owner in 2021. It boasts a comprehensive specification for cruising and an impressive sail wardrobe featuring 3Di Ocean sails from North. Its owners are experienced sailors who prioritize performance and have previously owned several race boats. It was imperative for them that MIDNIGHT SWAN be fully equipped for two-handed sailing while also being suitable for regattas, a requirement it has met admirably. The yacht is in virtually new condition, with some mattresses and bedding still in protective coverings. And, of course, a Swan is a Swan.

Builder’s/Manufacturer’s Comments

For Nautor’s Swan, 48 is a magic number. One of the most iconic Swans ever was born in 1971 under this number: the mythical Swan 48. Designed by the best yacht designer of that time, indeed one of the best of all times, Sparkman & Stephens of New York, this iconic yacht won some of the most prestigious offshore races, like the Bermuda Race and Transatlantic Race and achieving selection for the Admiral’s Cup – the “Formula One” race series of that time.

However, racing was not the main purpose of the boat: like any Swan, she was born to be a perfect family cruiser, capable of sailing around the world in total safety and comfort. Quoting from the original brochure: “With many international races behind her – the Swan 48 is keeping up an irresistible challenge as top-class ocean racer. With the speed of a bird of prey, she combines the luxury and grace which make her the swift, smooth-going Swan of tomorrow. The Swan 48 is equipped to the highest professional standards and the woodwork has the class given it by the Nautor specialists, men who have learnt their crafts around the Gulf of Bothnia, where woodwork and shipbuilding skills are traditional. The unique design and professional skills behind the Swan 48 make her the complete ocean cruising racer.” To prove this, 46 units were sold during five years of production.

Following the same principles, in 1995 German Frers designed a new Swan 48 with the same level of grace and performance as the original one: another shining success, with 57 yachts built, now becoming beloved and highly regarded yachts on the brokerage market.

Today, almost forty years after the original one, it is time for another mythical Swan 48.

Designer’s Comments

German Frers, Architect: Like every design coming off our drawing board, the new Swan 48 has been designed with heart and passion, but rather than acting only on the flash of a moment of inspiration, this new Nautor model is the result of a rational brief, based on a market analysis and the experience of the builder, agents and designers, coordinated by the Nautor Project Line Leader. One can safely say the Swan 48 is a new model created by the work of a team of experts, and she offers the best equipment and material specifications and solutions available in the market. The equipment and tanks are low in the bottom of the hull and close to the longitudinal centre of buoyancy. The angle of positive stability is in the order of 120 degrees.

The displacement reflects the quality of the construction and the equipment dedicated to providing best comfort on-board. A yacht that will be safe, a pleasure to sail, will have an easy motion at sea due to the form stability and moderate ballast of the three keel options available, standard, shallow and racing. Following the latest larger models, the new design shows no distortion in the stern sections, the deck beam has been carried all the way back to the transom in combination with a twin rudder arrangement. Positive control shallow rudder draft and extra sailing length are some of the advantages of this design. A well-illuminated, massive interior volume where every one of the three cabins and two toilets that include separate showers has been carefully developed in detail by the interior designer.

On deck, there are separate areas for relaxing and sail handling. All halyards and sails are controlled from the cockpit and the tails stowed in dedicated bins. Protection from the elements is given by the spray hood mounted in combination with the bimini. The lazarette is large enough to accommodate and stow a fully inflated 2.80-metre tender. For sailors interested in racing at the Corinthian level there is a performance package offer available from Nautor, including a racing keel, a square top mainsail, carbon fibre mast and rigging, long bowsprit, upgraded deck gear together with recommendations to remove some of the cruising-oriented equipment like the gen set.

Misa Poggi, Interior Designer: Working on the interior of a Swan yacht means creating a special atmosphere for on-board comfort and contentment and a reciprocal enrichment beyond the practicalities of place, function and space, always involving Finnish passion for excellence.

The process for producing a sense of intimacy combined with the necessary seamanlike features is a multi-faceted one that enriches itself thanks to the collaboration of the great expertise of the Nautor’s Swan team, our technicians and, of course, evaluating the dreams of Swan enthusiasts.

The atmosphere on-board and its energy are determined by the relationship between spacial elements and materials.

Nautor’s Swan materials are chosen carefully and tested by the whole team to guarantee their best performance in all the challenging areas of the sailing context.

Owner’s Comments

Although we have owned many yachts in the past, MIDNIGHT SWAN was our first Nautor Swan. We purchased her while she was in build, and we were able to upgrade the specification significantly, including the sail wardrobe, a folding saloon table, central heating (we wanted to use her in the UK, after all!), additional refrigeration, and many more detailed updates.

MIDNIGHT SWAN is UK VAT paid as we purchased her for UK two-handed sailing, and she has performed extremely well. Her modest size makes her welcome in UK ports, and she sails quickly and is very well balanced. She is a very stable platform, and we have never found the need to bring additional crew on-board. Her twin rudders have proved to be a very big plus.

The build quality of the Swan 48 is everything that you would imagine; MIDNIGHT SWAN looks good behind the scenes as well. Her lightwood interior makes her light, bright, and airy below.

We have much enjoyed our ownership of MIDNIGHT SWAN, and we are only putting her on the market as we have decided to do more sailing in the Mediterranean, and we already have a yacht there. This means that MIDNIGHT SWAN will not have the use that she deserves in our hands, so we have reluctantly decided to put her on the market. She is a fantastic yacht, and we are sure that her next owners will have as much good sailing and fun aboard her as we have.

Alan Shawn Feinstein, philanthropist who built fortune on direct-mail schemes, dies at 93

Alan Shawn Feinstein, the ubiquitous figure whose name adorns buildings throughout Rhode Island, died this weekend at 93.

Feinstein made his fortune by selling so-called "collectibles" like Mars-themed stamps from Sierra Leone that he suggested would skyrocket in value.

But he was better known as a prolific philanthropist who lived in a modest ranch house in Cranston right up until his death, while giving away millions to schools and scholarship programs.

For Rhode Islanders who grew up in the 1990s and 2000s, Feinstein was a household name: He made regular visits to virtually every school in the state, handing out Guyanese baseball cards and, later, coupons for free popcorn at the Feinstein IMAX theater at the Providence Place Mall.

Often clad in a gold jacket, he would encourage students to become Feinstein Junior Scholars, which involved pledging to do good deeds and documenting them in a Feinstein-branded journal.

"There’s no yacht in the world that can match 250,000 children pledging to make the world a better place one good deed at a time," he told The Providence Journal in 2021.

How did Alan Shawn Feinstein make his money?

Feinstein was a true Rhode Island character, despite growing up in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and attending Boston University.

He first moved here with his wife, Pratarnporn Feinstein, who was completing her residency in child psychiatry. The couple also spent time in Pratarnporn's homeland of Thailand, and Feinstein later said that a private meeting with the king of Thailand inspired him to help children .

Feinstein made his millions from publishing newsletters with titles like "International Insider's Report" and "The Wealth Maker," which were sent to mailing lists that he purchased from a broker, he told The Journal in 2004. He also wrote and sold various get-rich-quick titles like "Making Your Money Grow" and "How to Make Money Fast."

Through direct mail solicitations, Feinstein advertised commemorative items like stamps, collectible coins, and presidential autographs. Among them: A set of stamps issued by Sierra Leone, depicting a Martian rock formation that resembled a human face.

Feinstein never promised that the stamps' value would balloon, but he quoted a "respected scientific researcher" who suggested that the $135 set could be worth $10,000 or more once intelligent life was discovered on Mars.

A "Beanie Baby-style rush" broke out, The Journal reported. But collectors never saw the return on their investment that they'd anticipated. Today, a set of the stamps costs $15 on eBay.

A ubiquitous name in Rhode Island schools

In 1991, around the time of the Mars promotion, Feinstein formed his first charity, the Feinstein Foundation . Within a few years, he had put in about $50 million of his own money, he told The Journal. He started yet another nonprofit, the Alan Shawn Feinstein Foundation, after retiring from the newsletter business in 1996.

Before long, his name appeared on Alan Shawn Feinstein Elementary School in Providence, Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School in Coventry, University of Rhode Island Alan Shawn Feinstein College of Continuing Education, Alan Shawn Feinstein Graduate School at Johnson & Wales University, the Feinstein College of Arts & Sciences at Roger Williams University, the Feinstein Institute for Public Service at Providence College – just to name a few.

In 2000, Feinstein paid $1.4 million for the naming rights to the Providence Place mall's IMAX theater. The deal required his name to be the same size as the IMAX logo, and linked to all promotions and ticket sales. But a different company later purchased the theater and removed his name, prompting Feinstein to file a federal lawsuit.

Critics often contended that Feinstein's generosity came with strings attached – namely, his insistence on being prominently recognized. In 2008, he withdrew an offer to donate $1 million to Westerly Middle School when some community members chafed at the condition that the school be renamed after him.

"I can't understand why the focus would be on 'why does this guy have to have his name on everything,'" Feinstein told The Journal at the time, adding, "Ninety-five percent of what I give, my name isn't on it."

Charitable legacy will live on

The flood of tributes that poured in after Feinstein's death was announced on Monday suggest that the Cranston resident will be remembered for his philanthropy, not the controversies that sometimes dogged him.

And the Feinstein Foundation will live on: Feinstein told The Journal in 2021 that he expected his daughter, Leila Feinstein, to succeed him as its head.

A funeral service for Feinstein's family and friends will take place on Sept. 21 at Swan Point Cemetery, his obituary states. It will also be live-streamed over Zoom.
