X-Yachts Xc38: Review and test
The Xcruising (Xc) range was designed for eating up the sea miles in style and comfort, yet they retain the same design and build qualities that X-Yachts’ Performance (Xp) designs are renowned for. The first in the family, the Xc 45, was awarded the 2009 European Yacht of the Year the year of its launch. It was soon joined by the Xc 42, then in 2010 the range was further expanded with the introduction of the Xc 50 and the Xc 38 – the latter again taking the 2011 European Yacht of the Year award.
As with her bigger sister ships, the Xc 38 is an aft cockpit design with attractive, classically styled lines that maximise the deck space and give her such a gorgeous profile. The Xc’s hull lines are fuller than those of the Xp models and have a deeper V-section forward of the keel for a more comfortable motion on lengthy ocean passages. The larger hull volume also increases the space available for a more powerful engine, larger tanks and greater battery capacity – enabling them to undertake extended offshore cruises without foregoing those home comforts.
As with all X-Yachts, the Xc 38’s hull is constructed around an immensely strong steel frame that dissipates the loads from her keel-stepped mast and lead/cast iron keel over a large area – saving her hull from possible distortion when her rig is under severe stress.
The Xc 38 is only available in a two-cabin layout, with a spacious master cabin forward and a comfortable guest double in the port quarter. The absence of a second aft cabin allows for a luxurious heads and a cavernous cockpit locker instead – usually more popular among the long-term cruising fraternity.
Interior joinery is crafted from Khaya Mahogany veneer, with white laminate on the foremost bulkhead and inside the heads. The workmanship is of the highest standard, with all cabinetry hand assembled and finished by specialist joiners.
Eight portlights and three hatches provide ample natural light and ventilation.

Funeral held for father, children who died after boat capsized in the Bay of Green Bay
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - The family of Bill Salnik, 5-year-old Charlotte, and 3-year-old Joshua said their final goodbyes to them on Sunday.
A funeral was held for them on Sunday in Green Bay.
“Billy loved sailing and was a very devoted father. Most of all he enjoyed times spent with kids especially, zoo, camping, going on trips, and sailing. The kids loved to ride their go-carts at the house, and loved swimming in the pond,” the obituary said.
The obituary website says that Bill, Charlotte, and Joshua are survived by their parents and grandparents, Tina Salnik and Ken Salnik, maternal grandma and great grandma, Marie Kobylarczyk, maternal grandmother, Stacey Neuzil, and many other relatives and friends.
The three went missing back in July after their boat capsized in the Bay of Green Bay.
The two children were found first. Their father, Bill, was found off the coast of Green Island just two weeks ago.
The Salnik family wanted to thank everyone who participated in the search efforts.

1 man found dead, 2 still missing after boat crashes into jetty
OLD SAYBROOK, Conn. (WFSB/Gray News) - Officials say one man was found dead and two others are missing after a boat crashed into a jetty in Connecticut.
The Coast Guard says a boat carrying nine people crashed into a jetty along the Connecticut River at high speed. The call was received around 9 p.m. Monday, WFSB reports .
Investigators believe the group was returning from a day trip to Block Island and are all local to the Old Saybrook area.
A single motorboat was found, half-submerged, near the Harbor One Marina in Old Saybrook. There was significant damage to the boat.
The boat was pulled from the river late Tuesday morning, and firefighters responded to a fuel leak that was cleaned up.
Six people – a man and five women, whose ages range from mid-20s to 30s – were rescued. They were all taken to the hospital and later released.
Authorities began searching for three missing men, who were reportedly not wearing life jackets.
One of the missing men was found dead during the search early Tuesday, according to officials with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
The search for the two remaining victims, both in their 20s, continued Tuesday. Crews utilized sonar technology in a search effort, with five boats scouring the waters around the crash site.
Authorities are investigating various factors, including currents, tides, wind direction and the boat’s GPS data to determine the boat’s speed and conditions leading up to the crash.
The boat has been towed to the DEEP office in Old Lyme for further analysis.
Guilford’s dive team responded, along with boats, personnel and ambulances from nearby towns, working to locate and assist the missing persons.
The Coast Guard also sent a helicopter from Cape Cod to assist search efforts.
