This custom Mercedes G63 Yachting Edition likely smells like a sauna full of cowboys

Carlex design's custom creation has real wood paneling and an opulent nautical theme.

Carlex Design makes cars you can smell. Each of the company's custom vehicles, whether it be a Yamaha V-Max or a Ferrari F12 or a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, strictly features high-quality materials that tickle the tactile and olfactory senses. Its newest creation, the Mercedes-AMG G63 Yachting Limited Edition, is no different. Carlex announced the new G-Class this week, and it features a wood-laden interior that likely smells like a sauna full of cowboys.

It's not often the interior of a car achieves Lead Image Status, but in the case of the Carlex Design Mercedes-AMG G63 G-Yachting Limited Edition, there was no other choice. Taste is up to the personal eye, but this is a rare overly done customization that works well and maintains class. Two interiors are previewed in the gallery, one light and one dark, but both feature the same central nautical theme. 

The ceiling of the Yachting Edition features striped slats with a large branded compass in the center. The slats mimic the design of the wood paneling that is seen on the floor, the doors, the dashboard, the seatbacks, and most significantly, on the rear cargo area. The wood is complemented by supple leather, Alcantara, and real metal accents. Ribbed seatbacks and door panels continue the marine vibe, as do small circles on the seats and trim pieces that seem to mimic rivets. One interior design features a nearly all-white look, while the other offers a two-tone brown and white appearance.

The exterior, though not as wild as the interior, was also customized. Much of the body is crafted from brushed metal panels, and the G63 sits on 22-inch wheels. The hood and greenhouse are painted flat black, and the spare tire cover also features a branded compass.

The AMG-specific radiator grille and the 4-branch, side-oriented AMG exhaust system make the most powerful G-Class instantly recognisable. Large air inlets with vertical louvers and AMG wheel-arch extensions enhance the striking front visage and emphasise its extroverted character - as does the AMG emblem on the bonnet. Bold light-alloy wheels are a powerful style complement to the prestigious design.

At the heart of the Mercedes-AMG G 63 is the legendary 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine with 430 kW (585 hp) and 850 Nm of torque. This has been coupled with a starter generator for the first time and boasts even more explosive power delivery and breathtaking torque. At the same time, the twin-scroll turbochargers positioned between the cylinder heads ensure better responsiveness and high-tech components from the world of motorsport offer a highly resilient drive.

The AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G sports transmission is the main reason for the optimum power-transfer to the road. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G executes shift commands without any interruption of traction and is faster than ever before. This enables both extremely dynamic acceleration and a fuel-efficient driving style. To ensure that your Mercedes-AMG G 63 performs well on any surface, three selectable differential locks ensure uninterrupted propulsion - even in extreme off-road situations.

2024 Mercedes-Benz G 63 Interior Review

The 2024 Mercedes-AMG G 63 is a box full of luxury. Adorned with high-quality materials, the cabin offers spacious seating with ample head- and legroom to keep passengers comfortable. That said, the cargo area and infotainment system are not particularly user-friendly, especially for such a high-end vehicle.

"Although the G-class's basic square-shouldered profile remains, the interior benefits from the same high-quality materials, and tech and convenience accouterment that dot the Mercedes lineup."

"You have to decide why you want to buy a G-Class. Mercedes offers interiors of this caliber, along with more and newer technology, on some of its less expensive vehicles. For what you get, the G-Class certainly is not up to the standards of other $100,000-plus Mercedes-Benz products."

"Leather, wood, heated front seats, an analog clock, and a gorgeous Burmester surround-sound system greet those who enter the 2023 G-Class."

The G 63 has 38.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and 68.6 cubic feet with these seats folded down. While that's sufficient for the average person's needs, many luxury large SUVs offer much more room. The G 63 can accommodate taller items thanks to its boxy design, but a heavy side-opening tailgate and high load floor can make loading and unloading difficult.

"Around the back of the G-class, there's still no power liftgate, and you'll need to be in good shape to open the side-hinged gate, which has a full-size spare tire mounted on it."

"The G-Class is far from the most practical large SUV. The side-opening cargo door requires space to operate, but at least it's hinged properly for curbside use. The load floor is high and not that deep, and it is limited on the sides by bulky body intrusions. The second-row seat doesn't fold flat. Its resulting ledge makes it so long, and bulky items can't simply be slid back."

"Behind the 60/40 split/folding rear seats is 38.1 cubic feet of luggage space. When those seats are folded, this area opens out to 68.6 cubic feet. Call the G-Class boxy, but a lot of things can fit into boxes."

The G 63 seats five people, and there's a good amount of cushioning and head- and legroom in both rows for all passengers. High seating positions may make it difficult for some to enter and exit the SUV with ease, though.

Standard features include Nappa leather upholstery, 10-way power-adjustable and heated front seats with memory settings, heated rear outboard seats and a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. Available options include massaging and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel and a microfiber headliner.

"Taller drivers and passengers will find plenty of head- and legroom in both the front and rear."

"The seats are rather high, and while there's some adjustability, the only seating position that really works is to sit tall and square. While the headroom is superb, the shorter door openings and high seat cushions mean passengers will have to duck while navigating the high step up. The step rail is too high to be very useful. While rear passenger space is reasonable, the rear doors' limited range of motion creates more difficulty in getting in and out than it should. You get a commanding view of the road ahead, but the front window roof pillars are thick and upright — enough to hide pedestrians waiting to cross at a stoplight. The rear view is partially obstructed by the rear-mounted spare tire, and the small side mirrors don't show you a whole lot either."

"We think headroom and legroom should be more than sufficient for most people. Rear legroom is a decent 39.5 inches."

Interior Features

The G 63 still uses the older Mercedes-Benz COMAND infotainment system, which comes with a 12.3-inch touch screen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, navigation, Bluetooth, a 15-speaker Burmester stereo, HD Radio, satellite radio, USB ports, an SD card reader, voice controls, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Additional standard features include tri-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, remote start, a sunroof and ambient interior lighting. A Wi-Fi hot spot is available.

While the system isn't difficult to operate, it does feel a bit dated. Response times can lag, graphics are unimpressive, and the menus are dense.

"Sadly, the G-Class is stuck with the old Mercedes-Benz COMAND infotainment system rather than the newer MBUX. It's not a bad system, but it's comparatively limited in functionality. The navigation display and commands are less sophisticated, for example, and the voice commands are finicky and limited. We also had some issues with the G-Class' advanced driver aids. Adaptive cruise works well enough, though it lacks the Traffic Jam Assist feature of other Mercedes products."

"The Mercedes-AMG G63 is not available with as many driver-assistance aids as the automaker's cars and SUVs. The G63 comes with adaptive cruise control, for example, but the system does not offer extended restart capability in stop-and-go traffic."

"In common with most contemporary Mercedes-Benz models, the prominent dashboard feature is the twin-screen unit, with one for driver information, the other for the infotainment system. They each measure a generous 12.3 inches on the diagonal."

Brabus 800 Mercedes-AMG G63 Gets A Bespoke Candy-Blue Interior

Previously, we featured the Brabus 800 based on the Mercedes-AMG G63 4×4² in Stealth Green and Superblack builds. Both of these present ways to optimize the look and the performance of the already-impressive G-Class. Recently, it was revealed that there’s more that can be done to further elevate the appeal of the iconic SUV. Platinum Group just posted on Instagram a bespoke version of the tuned vehicle with candy-blue trim for its interior, which is quite enticing, to say the least.

The Brabus 800

The Brabus 800 based on the AMG G63 is a sight to behold. With its wide body kit and striking gray exterior, it surely demands attention on the road.

Every inch of this machine has been meticulously enhanced, from the distinctive grille and power dome on the hood to the additional lighting and removed spare wheel holder. The black-finished wheels add a touch of aggressiveness, harmonizing with the overall aesthetics.

Powerhouse Performance

Under the hood, the Brabus 800 unleashes the G-Wagen’s true potential. It possesses an awe-inspiring output of 789 horsepower (588 kW), courtesy of the enhanced 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine.

The tuner’s expertise propels the unit from 0 to 62 mph (100 kph) in just over three seconds, delivering exhilarating acceleration and unmatched performance.

All about the $40m bayesian yacht that capsized, leaving 6 dead and 1 still missing.

The massive superyacht Bayesian that sank off the coast of Italy on Monday won numerous awards for its sleek interior design — and was sold to its original owner for nearly $40 million.

The luxury sailing ship was carrying 22 people when it capsized and sank during a fierce storm early Monday.

The bodies of five of six missing passengers, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch , 69, have been recovered. His daughter, 18-year-old Hannah, is the only one of six known killed in the tragedy yet to be found, a source close to the rescue operation told Reuters.

The ship’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, has also been confirmed dead.

Divers continued searching the wreckage of the 184-foot-long, British-flagged vessel, previously called Salute, on Wednesday after discovering four of the bodies.

When it was built in 2008, the Bayesian had the tallest aluminum mast in the world, standing at 237 feet, earning it the award for best exterior styling at the World Superyacht Awards in 2009, the Telegraph reported.

The sprawling superyacht’s interior, decorated with sleek, minimalist furnishings created by Remi Tessier, has also won numerous awards.

The ship, which accommodated 12 guests, had a master bedroom and three double and two twin bedrooms.

It also featured beige sofas, dark wood furnishings, and a teak deck equipped with a large canvas awning to keep guests cool, according to the outlet.

Some of the ship’s styling, including thin brown pillars and miniature terra cotta sculptures, was inspired by Japanese culture.

What to know after a tornado sank the yacht Bayesian off the coast of Sicily:

• A superyacht capsized off the coast of Sicily after a tornado hit the area early Monday, killing seven passengers.
• British tech tycoon Mike Lynch was identified as one of the bodies pulled from the wreckage. His teenage daughter, Hannah, was the final one to be recovered.
• Lynch — known as “Britain’s Bill Gates” — had invited guests from Clifford Chance, a legal firm that represented him, and Invoke Capital, his own company, on the voyage,  according to the Telegraph . 
• Security camera footage shot from 650 feet from where the  Bayesian sank Monday  shows it disappearing.
• A rare and unexpected “black swan” weather event may have led to the  Bayesian’s speedy demise , maritime experts say.

The extravagant ship won best interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards in 2008 and was also voted one of the best large sailing yachts at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards, according to the outlet.

The yacht’s original owner, John Groenewoud, a Dutch real estate developer, reportedly bought the ship for £30 million ($39 million) when it was built. In 2014, he sold the ship with an asking price of £27 million ($35 million).

The Bayesian is currently owned by Revtom, a company that listed Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, as its legal owner.

It was named after the Bayesian statistical model that helps financial investors calculate risk — the subject of Lynch’s PhD that later helped him build his empire.

The vessel, operated by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, had twin 965hp MTU engines, which gave it a range of 3,600 nautical miles at 13 to 15 knots (14 to 17 mph).

RSB Rigging carried out rig service works on the ship with Astilleros de Mallorca, a shipyard facility in Palma, in November 2016.

The Bayesian returned in September 2020 for scheduled service works, including having its mast removed and reinstalled.

Steve Branagh, managing director of RSB Rigging, told the Telegraph: “At this time, our deepest sympathies go out to the friends and families of all those affected by this dreadful tragedy.”

Inside the multi-award-winning Bayesian superyacht

• The Bayesian superyacht sank this morning following a tornado near Palermo

• It had the largest aluminium mast in the world, and could carry 12 guests  

The doomed luxury superyacht that sunk off the coast of Sicily today while carrying British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his family was a multi-award-winning vessel which had the tallest aluminium mast in the world.  

The luxury sailboat, the Bayesian, was docked off the coast of Porticello, near Palermo, when a tornado hit the area just before 5am, wrecking the boat and causing it to rapidly disappear beneath the waves.

Lynch's wife Angela Bacares was among the fifteen people who were rescued from the yacht, which had been carrying ten crewmembers, the owner and 11 guests.

The Bayesian, which was previously known as the Salute, was a 56m long vessel built in Viareggio, Tuscany, by luxury shipmaker Perini Navi in 2008. It was 11.51m at its widest point. 

The ship's interior, designed in a Japanese style, was crafted by the Remi Tessier design house, and was last refitted in 2020.

At 75m, the vessel's mast was the second tallest fitted to any vessel in the world, and the tallest made of aluminium. 

It won several awards for its styling when it was first made, taking home the Best Exterior prize at the World Superyacht Awards in 2009, and the Best Interior at the International Superyacht Society Awards in 2008. 

It was also a finalist in the World Superyacht Awards' Best Sailing Yacht in the 45m+ size range in 2009. 

The Bayesian could hold up to 12 guests in six cabins, one master, three doubles and two twin rooms, as well as 10 crew members. 

Both the hull and the superstructure, the part above the main deck, were made from aluminium. 

According to KM Yatchbuilders, a Dutch shipmaker, aluminium is three times lighter than steel. On top of this, aluminium alloys do not rust, and yachts made from them are 'easy to repair.'

On top of the sails, the Bayesian was powered by two 8-cylinder 965hp engines made by German manufacturer MTU that are capable of running at 210rpm. 

This allowed the vessel to reach a top speed of 15 knots (17mph). This, combined with the 57,000 litre fuel tanks, means it had a range of up to 3,600 nautical miles. 

A one-year-old baby and her parents were among those rescued by a nearby sailboat, but six of the passengers - who include British, American and Canadian citizens - remain unaccounted for.

Divers are desperately searching the wreck of the Bayesian, which is on the sea bed 160ft beneath the water. Tragically, the body of a man - believed to be the boat's chef - was found floating alongside the vessel earlier today.

There are fears that those who are still missing became trapped in their cabins, with divers earlier reporting that they saw 'bodies through the portholes' of the yacht, according to Italian media.

Tackling moscow by train and boat.

Our first full day in Moscow started fairly late since we were still catching up on sleep.  Around 1, we finally were able to get our act together and get out the door. 

We stopped by a cafe to get some breakfast and headed over to the Red Square.  Since the festival is going on, we had to go through metal detectors.  Once we cleared security, we reached the State Historical Museum which provided an entrance to the Red Square.

We walked the length of the Red Square, passing by the Kazan cathedral.

Under normal conditions, the Red Square is a large walking area with the State Historical Museum on one end and St. Basil's on the other end.  On the sides is the Kremlin wall on one side and then the GUM shopping mall and the Kazan cathedral on the other side.  Presently, the walking area has been considerably narrowed and the fesitval grounds occupying a large space between the Kremlin and the mall.

After walking around the Red Square, we had to leave to meet up with our Metro Tour.  

Moscow has famously pretty metro stations so metro tours are quite popular.  We booked a relatively inexpensive tour through a tour group which met outside of the Red Square.

On our way, we passed by the Kremlin gardens and the tomb to the unknown soldier and the eternal flame.

We soon met up with our group which, fortunately, was only 5 people.  Our guide told us that we were going to visit 8 stations during the 1.5 hour tour.  

Honestly, a lot of the stations blended in to me so I won't be able to give you a detailed description of all of them.  However, I did learn that there are 222 metro stations and the trains come every 2-3 minutes reliably.  For that reason, Moscow > DC. 

One of the first metro stations we visited had bronze statues all over of various depictions.  Many of the statues had superstitions tied to them.  For example, for a statue of the dog, it's held that if you rub the nose of the dog, you'll have good luck.  Consequently, most of the statue is tarnished - except for the nose.  I joked to Tomas that they probably rotate the "good luck" portion of the statue to ensure the entire statue gets polished.

However, I do remember some of the stations.

Novoslobodskaya is a station adorned with stained glass on the walls.

There was also Belarusskaya, which paid tribute to Belarus.

Another station which name I cannot remember but had pretty mosaics in the ceilings.

My favorite station was Komsomolskaya.  It's the busiest station and a hub for other connecting trains.  It was built during Statlin times and he wanted the station to embody beauty to set a good first impression to Russia.

I'd seen pictures of it beforehand since it's the most famous but it's so much more impressive in person.

Overall it was a very interesting tour.  Not sure of any other city which could offer a metro tour.  DC certainly can't...

After the tour, we headed back of the hotel to rest for a bit.  We had purchased tickets to a tour hour boat down the Moscow river.  The tickets were good for any time on any day and the boats left every 20min.  We decided to knock the tour out that day and headed over to the pier.  

We arrived at the pier and saw a boat by the company we had purchased from boarding.  We approached and they shook their head and said it wasn't the right boat. 

So we waited for another boat.

Another boat came along by the same company we had purchased from so weapproached them.  Again - we were told it wasn't the right boat and the boat we were looking for was coming.  

A third boat came along which was NOT by the company we had purchased from.  By this point, it had been longer than 20min waiting and I was starting to suspect that the correct boat was actually one of the ones which turned us away.   We approached the 3rd boat to ask if they knew which boat we should be on.  However, when we approached,  they waved us aboard without scanning our tickets.

So, we boarded the 3rd boat....which was definitely not ours.

We settled into an upper deck, open air table to take in the views.

After about hour on the cruise, Tomas remarked that it had been about an hour so we should be turning around soon.  I reminded him that we actually had no idea how long this cruise was or where we would be dropped off.  Since we were on the wrong boat.

Fortunately, it did turn around and took us back to the pier.  

For dinner, we decided to go to this burger place, Black Star Burger, which our guide told us about.  Tomas really liked his - I thought mine was OK.  It was a decent size patty with a mountain of Cole slaw on top.  We've realized that apparently Russians dislike getting their hands dirty while eating so some restaurants will give out gloves to use.  This particular restaurant gave out black gloves.

Since little mum has been asking about pictures which show my feet, I assume she wanted to see my new shoes.  I recently bought Allbirds which are suppose to be super comfortable walking shoes which you wear without socks and can be washed.  I didn't wear them too extensively beforehand, so that was probably my first error.  I also didn't bring another pair of good walking shoes,  which was likely my second error.  The Allbirds were great the first two days without socks.  Midway through the third day, my right foot was quite unhappy. Left foot was a trooper. So, now I have a bandaid on the heel of my right foot and wear socks.
