Dart 18 is a 18 ′ 0 ″ / 5.5 m catamaran sailboat designed by Rodney March and built by Dart Sailboats starting in 1975.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

The dart 18, the 18-footer, easy, simple and fast.

The Dart 18 was designed in 1975 by a trio of architects: Kim Stephens, Ian Fraser and Rodney March. The Dart 18 is a close relative of the Tornado, Rodney March's Olympic catamaran. It is the older brother of the Dart 15.

The Dart, since its creation, has been a strict monotype. The one-design combined with a very high quality of manufacture have allowed a very long life of this class and a large number of Dart 18s are still sailing on our waterways. They are often very good bargains on second hand boats.

Very simple to assemble and to sail, the Dart is a low canvas 18 footer and therefore accessible for couples. Simple to assemble and use, in the background a leisure and holiday boat par excellence.

E’ italiano il titolo mondiale del catamarano Dart 18 sul Garda Trentino (ma che spettacolo i dartisti!)

GUARDA DUE VIDEO E FOTO – Un campionato gioioso con tanti equipaggi di ogni età, tutti pazzi per questo catamarano-carrarmato intramontabile e spassoso. Gli italiani Siviero-Bozzoli vincono con una giornata di anticipo i Mondiali Dart 18 sul Garda Trentino

Titolo matematicamente assegnato ai Mondiali Dart 18 che si concluderanno sabato 27 agosto al Circolo Vela Arco, sul Garda Trentino. Alessandro Siviero, timoniere di Goro (Ferrara, Lega Navale Ferrara) pescatore di professione, ma ottimo velista con all’attivo già un titolo mondiale Dart 18 conquistato nel 2018, insieme ad altri 3 titoli iridati conquistati nella classe Melges 32 e in Altura classe ORC, nonostante la pressione della vigilia e dopo un errore di regolazione della barca nella prima giornata con vento forte, ha tirato fuori cattiveria e bravura, tanto da infilare nei giorni successivi una serie di vittorie parziali e secondi posti, che gli hanno permesso di vincere con addirittura una giornata di anticipo.

Per questo mondiale, organizzato dal Circolo Vela Arco, Siviero ha scelto e preparato qualche settimana prima il prodiere Giacomo Bozzoli (perSport), con cui si è allenato sull’Alto Garda tutti i week end di agosto per arrivare al Mondiale adeguatamente pronto.

Dopo otto regate sulle 10 previste, gli italiani hanno così calcolato di aver vinto matematicamente, considerando i 12 punti di distacco dai secondi e la sequenza di parziali con un terzo, due secondi e cinque vittorie, spesso guadagnate dopo splendidi recuperi.

Un mondiale che ha visto una sessantina di equipaggi in gara, l’ultima giornata ha riservato un cambio di classifica al terzo posto con l’ultima regata disputata sabato con vento da nord e una leggera pioggia. Secondi sono rimasti i francesi Hervè e Milania Le Maux con un quarto posto nella nona e ultima prova, al terzo posto l’hanno spuntata gli svizzeri Michiel Feher e Andri Fried, che grazie ad un primo finale sono riusciti a sorpassare gli altri francesi Francois Morisset con a prua il giovanissimo Paul Le Maux, già impegnato nella raccolta fondi per una campagna olimpica su Los Angeles 2028 con il Nacra 17.

A proposito di giovani da segnalare la presenza a questo mondiale di equipaggi sia di una certa età (over 60), da anni appassionati del catamarano Dart, sia di giovani, che trovano in questa classe divertimento e tecnica. E sono gli italiani Federico Spina e Francesco Miseri (Tognazzi Marine Village) ad aver vinto nella classifica under 25 con un ottimo sesto posto overall.

Assegnato il premio anche alla prima timoniera, l’ olandese Nicolette Van Gorp. Sul Garda Trentino e al Circolo Vela Arco, club che offre grande spazi per barche ingombranti come i catamarani, torneranno in regata i cat con i tecnologici Classe A, scafi sia foil che non, che dal 12 al 16 settembre saranno impegnati nel campionato Europeo con un centinaio di iscritti. 

Nel week end sarà la volta al Circolo Surf Torbole anche dello sport d’acqua del momento: in programma infatti la RRD One Hour Wing Foil.

Oranienbaum (Lomonosov)

Still commonly known by its post-war name of Lomonosov, the estate at Oranienbaum is the oldest of the Imperial Palaces around St. Petersburg, and also the only one not to be captured by Nazi forces during the Great Patriotic War. Founded by Prince Menshikov, Peter the Great's closest adviser, the Grand Palace is one of the most opulent examples of Petrine architecture to have survived to the present, although until very recently the palace itself has been greatly neglected. After Menshikov's death, Oranienbaum passed to the state, and was used as a hospice until, in 1743, it was presented by Empress Elizabeth to her nephew, the future Peter III. Peter made Oranienbaum his official summer residence and transformed one corner of the park, ordering the construction of a "Joke" Castle and a small citadel manned by his Holstein guards. This peculiar ensemble, called Petershtadt, was mostly demolished during Pavel's reign. Antonio Rinaldi, the Italian-born architect who also designed the Grand Palace at Gatchina and the Marble Palace in St. Petersburg, was commissioned by Peter in 1758 to build a modest stone palace next to the fortress, and this has survived.

After Peter was deposed, Rinaldi was commissioned by Catherine the Great to build the Chinese Palace, in the Upper Park, as her official country residence. However, Catherine spent little time at Oranienbaum, which she had grown to hate during her marriage to Peter, and by the end of the 18 th century the estate had been turned into a Naval Cadet College. The palace became an Imperial residence again in the reign of Alexander I, and retained that status until the Revolution, when it was immediately opened as a museum. Although never captured by the Germans, Oranienbaum was bombarded during the war and, while the Grand Menshikov Palace survived intact, its restoration was given much lower priority than the more famous estates at Peterhof and Tsarskoe Selo. Today, the small but elegant park has been almost completely restored, while the full restoration of the palaces has finally gained momentum over the last decade.
