Basic specs..
The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.
The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Oysterman 23 is equipped with a centreboard keel. A centreboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.

Kerrigan (Menger) Oysterman 23

Sailboat Oysterman 23 Fellow Skippers, Greetings from West by God Virginia. Capt'n Anders here. Just purchased a 1975 Kerrigan Oysterman 23. Look almost exactly like the Menger. Heard that Menger started making sloops in 1977 with same molds, built 75 than molds lost in fire. Can't find another soul that has heard of Kerrigan Boat Builders. Supposed to have been based in Oxford, MD. I'm making inquiries and would really like to start at first a data base and then a web site. Please send any info on you boat or sightings elsewhere. Mine is a ketch with three cabin windows and 3 forward stays. Hull number KER220080975. Perhaps it's hull number 22, dated 9th August 1975. Any and all info and photos greatly appreciated. Interestingly enough, right in Oxford, where I picked up, Grace-Y-A, there is an original oysterman in wood with sloop rig. How cool is that. Will send photos to all interested. She is a good size for exploring up the creeks in the Chesapeake. Hope you have lots of time -- she won't be fast in the light summer breezes, but you should have plenty of fun.
Paul, As I noted, I am going to compile a date base of all existing 23s by owner, date, location, city, state, and hull number with a view to developing a website in the future. This is a lovely nostalgic vessel and she deserves to be heralded. I would very much like to have your data if that is agreeable to you. As regards slow, the skipjacks and bugeyes were developed for the oyster industry almost as drifters and buy boats would collect the catch off shore. So speed was not a real necessity. Additionally as you will know, all hard chines are sailed best at about 12degrees. And the righting moment for these is rather tender. So slow as ye go. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving. Boatshed Cornwall are pleased to list this Oysterman 22, designed by Paul Gartside and built by Oystersailers Ltd of Penryn. This cutter rigged gaffer is a cruising yacht based on Falmouth working boats . Her heavy displacement with encapsulated ballast in a long keel suggests a capable cruiser.
This yacht is lying on a pontoon mooring and is in need of a post winter clean, which is in hand and may well have been completed prior to viewings. Once onboard, this little yacht exudes space and headroom envied probably by other yachts of this size.
Upgrades include: Renewed sails (2010) Renewed engine (2010) Renewed batteries (2017) Renewed battery charger (2018)
Overall, this is a good example of an Oysterman 22 which appears to have been maintained, with indications of a possible major refurbishment having been undertaken some ten years ago.
This yacht would make an interesting liveaboard and therefore a viewing is recommended.
