Carinthia VII is a 97.20m motor yacht built by Lurssen Yachts in 2002. Her timeless exterior lines and interior design are both the work of Tim Heywood.

The mega yacht, which benefitted from a refit in 2005, has a sleek steel hull and aluminium superstructure with a beam of 15.95m and a 4.80m draft.

Want to vacation like a billionaire? Here's how much it costs to charter a superyacht

• Chartering a superyacht is a more cost-effective way to experience the high seas than buying one.
• But it's far from cheap. Renting a yacht for that luxury experience can cost millions a week.
• Here's how much it costs to charter a superyacht and what you have to do to make it happen.

Superyachts are one of the most expensive items money can buy. Costing as much as nine figures to purchase — plus millions a year to maintain — they can also be considered one of the worst investments you can make.

If you're not like Mark Zuckerberg or Jeff Bezos and don't have hundreds of millions to spare, chartering a superyacht — any boat over 30 meters — can be a more economical option. But it is far from cheap. Renting, in layman's terms, a yacht for a week in the summer can cost upward of $1 million.

"Our charter clients are looking for a 6-star experience perfectly tailored to them," Katie Schneidman, a charter broker at brokerage Burgess, told Business Insider over email.

Take the Carinthia VII, a 97-meter yacht for charter from Fraser Yachts that costs more than $1.5 million a week to charter . Even split evenly among 12 guests, the most she can hold, that's about $18,000 per person per day.

You get a lot for your money : A glass-paneled swimming pool, a spa complete with Turkish baths and a beauty salon, plenty of water toys, and a crew of 33 ready to meet any of your needs.

"It's not uncommon to look for a deckhand who can also mix a martini, play an instrument, maybe entertain the guests with singing, and ideally even give a massage," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of Fraser Yachts, told Business Insider during the Palm Beach Yacht Show in March.

But there are a number of costs that aren't accounted for in that price.

Provisioning a charter yacht can run as much as 40% of the charter fee, Schneidman said. Fraser Yachts estimates the total is closer to 30%.

That means food, drink, and fuel for the Carinthia VII could cost as much as $600,000. Just a few years ago, provisioning ran about 20% of a charter's cost, an agent at Palm Beach Yacht Show told BI, but fuel costs have made it more expensive than ever to get caviar to the middle of the Med.

The industry standard for tipping runs another 7% to 20%, Fraser said, which would be between $105,000 and $300,000 for the Carinthia VII. Then there's the VAT, which depending on where you sail, can add another 20%, or $300,000, to the total cost.

Altogether, a week on the Carinthia VII can total $2.7 million — or just over $32,000 per person per day.

The full fee is due before setting sail, but it can be paid in two or three installments.

Once the charter is booked, the luxury experience begins right away. Clients will set an itinerary with the captain — the Carinthia VII sails in Greece and the Western Mediterranean — and the crew will stock the yacht with your choice of wine and spirits, as well as whatever food you want your on-staff private chef to cook.

But there is one thing which even the most experienced staff can't control.

"It is important to note yacht itineraries are at the mercy of weather," Schneidman said. And yes, you still have to pay — even if you don't leave the port.

But there are upsides, she said. "This can also lead to a happy surprise — a detour to Naples to escape a big swell outside of Positano can lead to finding an incredible Napolean pizza spot that becomes a trip favorite!"

Exterior Design

Due to its position, this Jacuzzi affords guests the perfect observation platform from which to overlook the sea and coastlines whilst underway or at-anchor. For those who prefer to remain dry whilst taking in the sights, four Stidd chairs have been strategically placed around the Jacuzzi in order to provide the same scope without obstructing the view of those taking a soak. To get even higher to secure an unparalleled photo opportunity, a winding staircase a short distance away provides access to a dedicated observation deck which can be enjoyed throughout the day. Bearing a walkaround layout, the team at Espen Oeino have recessed all of the storage compartments to allow for an undisrupted flow when navigating the various outdoor spaces of WHISPER- a decision which likewise provides the perfect excuse for taking an evening stroll to coincide with the sunset. Another uniquely impressive addition to the exterior is the secondary helipad on the foredeck which nicely doubles up as a basketball court, whilst the helipad on the bridge deck is easily converted into an exceptionally relaxed outdoor lounging area. Keen to keep guests entertained at night as well as by day, a fire pit with an integrated waterfall has been installed on the aft deck to provide just the right amount of heat for guests who want to enjoy their meals al freso at the dining table just a short distance away. Of course, it goes without saying that the four foot black jaguar resting on the bowsprit of superyacht WHISPER is very much the finishing touch to such a superbly arranged exterior.

Interior Design

Asked to create a compelling and distinct interior based on a ‘Champagne & Caviar’ theme, Reymond Langton Design have arranged both the social and private spaces to remain suitable whether guests are throwing a glamorous party or simply relaxing over a few drinks. Similar to the innovation found outdoors, the interior of superyacht WHISPER features a double-height main salon which spans the main and upper deck aft. Reached via a sweeping staircase, this area is infused with a colour scheme and architecture reminiscent of the Art Deco movement. Indeed, the juxtaposition of blacks and golds creates a strikingly luxurious ambience which is perfect for indulging both after-hours champagne and morning coffee. Nicely flexible, guests can have jazz tunes coming from the grand piano if they’re entertaining, or light one of the two fireplaces if it’s a more cozy vibe they’re after. The skylounge, meanwhile, exudes a more casual atmosphere thanks to its beach house style decor. Yet, with a large sports bar that opens out across the vast deck aft, the space easily transforms into a disco nightclub.

Guest Accommodation

A veritable masterpiece, the owner’s suite of superyacht WHISPER occupies the forward half of the upper deck. Featuring his and hers bathing rooms, room-size wardrobes, and even a private Jacuzzi, this suite comes with a personal office for attending to any necessary business whilst away on vacation. The two generously sized VIP suites on the main deck reflect the Art Nouveau influences which can be traced in the interior social spaces, whilst the remaining staterooms adopt Art Deco and Japanese themes to provide a stunning array of sleeping options. Ultimately, whichever room guests find themselves resting in on-board WHISPER, they can be assured that they’ll be doing so in total style.

Onboard Comfort & Entertainment

As well as providing a cinema screen on the foredeck, a party-friendly and spacious main salon, and a wealth of lounging spots on her exterior, WHISPER also offers a range of  possibilities for enjoying some activities. Storing her impressive range of tenders and toys in a garage which doubles up as a spot for some waterside aerobics and yoga, superyacht WHISPER is also fully prepared for the more adventurous charter guests who are keen to get out on the water and in amongst the action.

While smaller yachts can be operated by a single person, larger yachts require a trained crew to operate them safely. Different types of yachts also have different crew needs, which can depend on the yacht's size, features, and intended use. In this article, we'll let you know what size yacht requires a crew, and how many crew are needed for different types and lengths of yacht.

Yachts that are over 30 feet in length require a crew to operate them safely. A yacht that is 100 feet in length requires a crew of at least four to six people, including a captain, engineer, stewardess, and deckhand. Meanwhile, yachts that are under 30 feet in length can be operated by a single person.

Recreational yachts are typically smaller and used for leisure activities like fishing, cruising, and water sports. Since these yachts are usually 30 feet or smaller, they can be operated by a single person without a crew. Let's see how many crew members are needed for other types of yachts.
