How to choose a superyacht crew uniform

Some superyacht crews are dressed to impress, others follow the polo shirt and shorts routine. But what, asks Claire Wrathall, do your staff wear on board? And what do their outfits say about you?

Among the many stand-out yachts that competed in 2014's Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge was Moonbeam IV , a 35 metre gaff cutter built in 1914 and once owned by Prince Rainier of Monaco.

It was not just her beauty and her speed that caught the eye. Even amid the stellar yachts competing in the prestigious series of races, the look of her superyacht crew gave the impression that, despite her 2001 restoration, she was somehow more authentically historic than the competition.

There was I, on the schooner berthed next to her at the Imperia regatta in northern Italy, dressed — as were we all, owner, guests and race crew — practically and comfortably in Helly Hansen khaki shorts, Musto Evolution white polo shirts, with baseball caps clipped to our collars, everything printed or embroidered with our yacht's sail number and name.

In contrast Moonbeam IV's crew wore long trousers (though most had rolled them to mid-calf) and long-sleeved smocks of thick white cotton, an outfit completed with navy neckerchiefs and peaked Breton caps.

The abiding message their uniforms heralded was one of authenticity. She may have two engines these days, but she's not the sort of vessel to incur race penalties for hydraulic winches. Historic yachts, she seemed to signal, call for historic garb.

Cast your eyes along the dock of any well-to-do marina in high season and the majority of crew will be dressed in shorts and polo shirts in a palette unlikely to venture far beyond white, navy or shades of beige. Some uniform outfitters carry a wider range of colours, but when it comes to polo shirts no shade outsells white.

Of course, some yacht designers regard crew uniforms as a key component in the overall concept. When, for example, Philippe Starck designed _Motor Yacht _ A , the supremely futuristic submarine-inspired stealth yacht for Andrey Melnichenko in 2008, his scheme incorporated a monochrome wardrobe — to complement the décor — for the boat’s 35-plus crew. It specified white dress shirts and long white trousers for male crew during the day and snugly fitted black T-shirts — the better to show off their honed physiques — after dark. The stewardesses wore what Vanity Fair described as “custom-designed harem-style” outfits: essentially tunics and Capri pants, but cut diaphanously from less-than-opaque cloth.

Not that Starck was an outlier in this. When Nuvolari Lenard designed Quattroelle , the 88 metre launched in 2013, its brief embraced everything from the woven-leather walls of its nine suites to the 970-piece Murano chandelier above the dining table to the uniforms worn by its 29 crew. (Only the superyacht gym equipment fell outside their remit; it was specified, at least officially, by Usain Bolt.)

It’s hardly surprising, too, that fashion folk tend to supervise the design of the crew uniforms on their yachts. Witness Giorgio Armani’s yacht, Maìn . Just as the interior is furnished with pieces from his Armani Casa collection, so the crew wear Armani : white Bermudas and long-sleeved shirts when in port; shorts and short sleeves in a deep sea green to match the boat’s livery while at sea; and something smarter in the evening from that season’s collection.

It’s no surprise either that Roberto Cavalli outfits the crew of his eponymous and distinctive yacht, with its iridescent purple hull. “Their beautiful dark blue uniforms give them a certain distinction,” he wrote in his blog a couple of summers back. “Only the commander, Alexander, wears a white suit, so white he could be a model for a detergent advertisement!” For the skipper needs to look the part — epaulettes with four gold bars, aviator shades, peaked cap and all. (Those who really like stripes can award them to their chief stewards or stewardesses, too, but they should be silver and there shouldn’t be more than three.)

Don't assume, however, that every Italian fashion impresario with a yacht dresses his crew in outfits from that season's collection. The 11-strong crew of Valentino's TM Blue One have been photographed in simple white T-shirts bearing the boat's insignia. “I hate the idea of a fancy boat,” he once told W magazine, though its interiors are the work of Peter Marino , a designer not normally noted for restraint. “Velvet and carpets and all that belong on the Avenue Foch, not on the sea. Boats mean wicker and straw and cotton awnings.”

There's no such simplicity on Prada's Luna Rossa  — a yacht that inspired its own eponymous perfume. Rather, its crew wear a stylish silver-grey kit with a single red stripe and quilting, at least on the integrated life vests, segmented in such a way as to suggest exaggerated musculature. It is certainly a design statement, yet it's never going to be available in Prada stores.

Not that one has to be a designer to take an interest in how one's crew dress. Take the Singaporean investor Adrian Lee, owner of Ocean Paradise . His portfolio includes Klapsons hotel in Singapore, hence the contemporary “design hotel” aesthetic he has brought to bear on his yacht, which makes much of texture, colour and unexpected fabrics: pale blue pony-skin bed-heads, crocodile-effect leather on the stair treads and expansive use of silvery woven carbon fibre. He designed the navy polo shirts its crew (and he himself) wear on board, which have mandarin collars piped in a print to complement the deck upholstery.

Traditionally, however, it’s the owner’s spouse who takes charge of the uniforms. And, says almost every stewardess you care to ask, you can generally tell a lot about her confidence and self-esteem by what she specifies. Just as some women will strive to recruit homely nannies, so insecure wives may go out of their way to ensure that female crew wear loose, unflattering T-shirts and frumpy ill-cut shorts, lest their husbands are tempted to stray.

That said, you’d be hard-pressed to find a stew who doesn’t offer occasional prayers to the inventor of the skort, the mini skirt-shorts hybrid that is both feminine and protective of modesty. For the record, it was dreamt up by two American sportswear designers, Leon Levin and Lulu Roody, in the 1960s. Calling it the Q Skirt, they reckoned it offered “the freedom of shorts and the soft lines of a skirt” and targeted it, through ads in The New Yorker , at lady golfers. (“Top performers, no matter what you play, or where, Leon Levins let you pivot from sportswoman to shopper, easily, breezily,” ran the 1972 campaign.)

Better yet, skorts are fashionable ashore this summer: not just the one of the yachting wardrobe essentials but “a catwalk trend [that’s] here to stay”, at least according to the copywriters at Topshop.

This should not, however, tempt anyone with a yacht to buy on the high street. Ocean life brings with it significant wear and uniforms should be robust enough to survive frequent washing. Ideally they dry quickly too, requiring minimal ironing, assuming they need pressing at all.

One former crewmember-turned-yacht broker remembers a season spent on a strikingly beautiful superyacht, whose owners decided to dress its 22 crew in Versace, outfits the deckhand calculated cost £800 each. At first the crew were delighted, flattered at the investment and at how handsome they looked. But the prevailing colour was white, the tops had to be laundered by hand, the shorts were dry clean only, and this was a yacht without an onboard dry cleaning facility. Below decks at least, it was not a happy ship.

Such details do matter, not just because a content crew will smile more warmly and more naturally than a beleaguered one and their manicures will last longer if they're not up to their elbows in detergent each evening.

The technical performance of fabrics should therefore be a consideration. Employers have a duty of care to their staff, hence the popularity of, for example, the UK sailing specialist Musto's Sunblock fabrics, which have a sun protection factor of 40.

As its founder, Keith Musto, puts it: “We sailed in Guernsey sweaters and old flannel trousers for years. You got wet and you accepted it. But, as we progressed up the ladder in terms of competition, we realised that this was a problem that needed to be solved.”

His solution was to work with manufacturers to develop fabrics that are waterproof, windproof, even perspiration-proof. Coolmax, for instance, “draws moisture away from the skin surface, dispersing it so that it can evaporate rapidly”.

In essence, then, there is much to consider when speccing a crew uniform, hence the number of specialist outfitters — Taylor Made Designs, Dolphin Wear, Nauticrew Yachtwear et al. And a lot to be said for keeping it simple. There's a reason shorts and polo shirts have replaced the formal quasi-naval styles of the 1980s and 1990s. Of course, crews should look stylish, neat and soigné. But, ultimately, no boat should be remembered for what the staff were wearing.

Blitzen’s Baddies aim for strong finish to 2024 Newport Yacht Club’s racing season

Spencer Buchanan, from left, boat owner Brett Scott and Adam Bradley rig the Blitzen.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Challenges confronted the crew of the Blitzen from day one in their inaugural year competing in the Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s racing season. Their halyard broke during the opening day race in May, sending the wind-catching kite propelling their boat from Long Beach Harbor to Newport Pier tumbling into the ocean.

“There was no hesitation between this team,” Blitzen’s owner Brett Scott said. “Everyone grabbed the kite and in 20 seconds it was up and flying again.”

She has been sailing since she was 5. But her first year at the head of a team has taught her a lot about managing schedules, the personalities aboard the boat and finances, she said.

“Whenever something breaks it adds up, so I’m definitely not doing this for the money,” Scott said with a laugh. “Don’t take investment advice from me. But we’ve really bonded as a team, and I think that’s our greatest achievement.”

There were plenty of smirks, side-eye and playful jabs as she and the crew rigged the Blitzen Friday in preparation of Long Point Race week. The three-day race is the last competitive event of the yacht club’s season.

The first leg starts in Newport Harbor and ends at Catalina Island. Boats then sail to the opposite end of the island and back on day two before returning to Newport Harbor on day three.

The crew of the Blitzen prepares the boat Friday ahead of the Long Point Yacht Race.

Blitzen’s Baddies, as the crew refers to themselves on Instagram, are all experienced sailors and were optimistic about finishing strong in their first season as a team. They’ve had some success this summer, including third-, second- and first-place finishes in their class during the three days of Long Beach Racing Week in June.

“We keep getting better,” Scott said.

Crew member Tyler Macdonald said the hardest part about the season has been “dealing with Adam and Spencer,” drawing laughs from Adam Bradley, Spencer Buchanan and the rest of the team aboard the Blitzen on Friday. Teammate Matt Whitfield said the real challenge of each race lies in “the hangover afterwards.” Coincidentally, he said his favorite activity while sailing is when they crack open some beer mid-journey.

There’s no shortage of banter aboard the Blitzen. And the irreverent sense of humor of her crew is half the reason Scoot chose to have them aboard.

She grew up in Reno and traveled to Newport Beach every summer as a child to sail with her family. She fell in love with both the ocean and the tavern-style warmth of the community that welcomed her into the sport.

Boat owner Brett Scott, left, and crew member Scott Buchanan.

Her father, Bart Scott, said he wasn’t surprised to see her move to Newport Beach. He’s proud to see her fulfill her lifelong dream of owning a boat and fielding a racing team. And although she has a sense of humor, she runs a tight ship and commands the respect of her crew.

The ‘sick’ conspiracy theories surrounding the superyacht death of Mike Lynch

The scenario is so terrible, tragic and unlikely that nobody would dare dream it up.

In the early hours of Monday, the tech tycoon Mike Lynch and the guests on his yacht, the Bayesian, would have been reeling from an awful shock.

Lynch, 59, was on a lavish Mediterranean holiday with his family and defence team to celebrate his remarkable acquittal on fraud charges in the US after an over decade-long battle.

But on Saturday, Lynch’s co-defendant in the case, Stephen Chamberlain, was killed after being hit by a car while out jogging near his home in Cambridgeshire. The mood onboard must have been sombre on Monday morning when a tornado over water, known as a waterspout, struck the vessel as it was moored off the coast of Sicily.

At the time of writing, 15 of the guests and crew have been rescued. But six bodies – including that of Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter – have been recovered. The dead are believed to include: chef Recaldo Thomas, Lynch’s lawyer Christopher Morvillo, and Jonathan Bloomer, the chair of Morgan Stanley International and Hiscox insurance, who had been a key defence witness in Lynch’s case.

According to experts, the chances of a yacht like the 184-foot Bayesian sinking while at anchor are minimal.

“I’ve been speaking to a lot [of people] in the industry today and they are as shocked as me – enough to disbelieve that this could happen,” Stewart Campbell, editor-in-chief of Boat International , told BBC’s Newsnight .

Given the improbability of these two fatal accidents happening barely two days apart, it is perhaps no surprise that conspiracy theories began to swirl almost immediately afterwards.

Superyachts and billionaires are always fertile ground for speculation, even before an accident like the one that befell Lynch and his guests. The facts in this case make for a truly extraordinary set of coincidences, with added large corporate interests, a defeated US Justice Department and connections to intelligence agencies.

Fed such potent fuel, internet forums – in particular Reddit and X (formerly known as Twitter) – have exploded with conspiracy theories. Have the victims been bumped off by disgruntled US Justice officials? Shadowy corporate actors? Spooks? The Italian authorities have reportedly launched an investigation into whether portholes being left open might have contributed to the rapid sinking.   As one Reddit user asserted, it’s the kind of case that “makes you question reality”.

Lynch, a British-born Irish entrepreneur with an academic background in probability theorems, was best known as a co-founder of Autonomy, a software company – Chamberlain was vice president of finance. In 2011, the firm was sold to the American computer giant Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $11 billion, netting Lynch hundreds of millions of pounds in the process. Forbes has put his personal wealth at over $1 billion.

But the deal was dogged from the start by accusations of foul play – HP accused Autonomy of artificially inflating its profits ahead of the sale. A year later, the firm wrote off billions of pounds worth of value from the deal. HP brought civil charges before the US Justice Department got involved. The odds were stacked against Lynch and Chamberlain. Fewer than one in 200 of such cases end in acquittal.

Speaking just before the trip about the moment of acquittal, Mr Morvillo, a partner at the law firm Clifford Chance, said, “Our side of the courtroom erupted, it was this electric moment. I’ve never seen anything like it in a courtroom before.”

For Lynch, who had been extradited to the US for trial and faced up to 25 years in prison, the verdict was akin to a rebirth . In an interview, he told The Times , “I’d had to say goodbye to everything and everyone, because I didn’t know if I’d be coming back.

“It’s bizarre, but now you have a second life,” he added. “The question is, what do you want to do with it?”

Elsewhere, he criticised the US system, saying that the only reason he was free was because he was able to spend more than $30 million fighting his case.

“The reason I’m sitting here, let’s be honest, is not only because I was innocent,” he said. “But because I had enough money not to be swept away by a process that’s set up to sweep you away.”

After the Autonomy sale, in 2013, Lynch cofounded Darktrace, a cybersecurity firm which hired former high-ranking MI5 agents for senior positions. He made Chamberlain his chief financial officer in 2016.

Given the series of unlikely events that has since befallen the pair, it is ironic that Lynch’s specialism was probability. His yacht, the Bayesian, was named after Thomas Bayes, the 18th-century mathematician and Presbyterian minister whose work revolutionised our understanding of predictions.

Bayes was famed for his mathematical formula, known as Bayes theorem, which calculates “Conditional Probability” – determining how likely something is to happen given a particular scenario. It is used in medical testing to calculate your chance of dying from cancer at a given age, and in finance, to weigh the risk of lending money to potential borrowers.

Social media was awash with comments picking out the link between the principle and the seeming improbability that Lynch and his co-defendant could be struck by disaster two days and some 1,800 miles apart.

“Stunned by likely loss of Mike Lynch – two months after acquittal after 10 years legal threat,” said one person on X. “A reference to Bayes theorem on probability [too] … how ironic [a] huge yacht sinks from tornado strike – so unlikely.”

Sander van der Linden, a professor of social psychology at the University of Cambridge who studies conspiracy theories, says the case is a classic example of how conspiratorial thinking can arise.

“The brain’s always trying to connect the dots,” he says. “It’s hard for people to deal with random coincidences, however unlikely they are.”

Van der Linden adds that the internet and social media have led to an explosion of conspiracy theories, giving rise to legions of amateur sleuths who question the official version of events. In some cases they even start trying to investigate the case themselves.

“Social media allows for this kind of online sleuthing where people are finding their own stories and sharing with other people, which creates this vortex of unverified rumours,” he says. “That aspect is new. Ideally there should be no information void, because that’s where people start concocting their own explanations.”

In the instant-reaction online cauldron, any gap in the official version of events is likely to be seized on and subjected to wild interpretations. Missing people inspire particular speculation. When Nicola Bulley, a mother of two, went missing on a walk in Lancashire in January 2023, the online theorising became so frenzied that amateurs turned up to do their own investigations. The recent riots across the country began in part because conspiracy theorists speculated about the identity of the Southport killer . The deaths of two Boeing whistleblowers, just months apart, has also prompted wild speculation.

The Lynch case has clearly inspired similar conjecture and added to a canon of conspiracies linked to other incidents at sea, in particular. The mysterious death of the wealthy and powerful in such circumstances is a type of “information void” going back hundreds of years. Think of Robert Maxwell, the father of the disgraced Ghislaine Maxwell who fell to his death on his £15m yacht, or Alfred Loewenstein, who vanished from his plane over the English Channel in 1928.

“Sure, you could say there’s a 0.001% chance that both of them [Lynch and Chamberlain] were assassinated by some secret organisation, but that’s not the most likely explanation,” van der Linden says. “People should be paying attention to evidence-based explanations, which take time to develop.”

Taken out of their remarkable coincidences, the facts of each accident are notably non-conspiratorial. Tornadic storms, of the sort that hit the Bayesian, are more common in hot or humid environments. The Mediterranean reached its highest recorded surface temperature last week, of 32 degrees. Chamberlain was hit on Newmarket Road in the village of Stretham. Police said that the driver, a 49-year-old woman from Haddenham, remained at the scene and is helping with inquiries.

“People don’t like the idea that life isn’t certain, that we don’t have all the answers, that you could die at any minute, that bad accidents could happen to you,” says van der Linden. “It’s easier to believe it was all intentional and planned [rather] than somebody disappearing because a storm sank his boat.”

None of this will be much comfort to the family and friends grieving their dead, being forced to endure some of the worst days of their lives amid fevered public speculation. A fanciful theory for the internet is an all too real loss for the people involved.

Five bodies found in sunken superyacht, officials say

Divers have found five bodies in the sunken wreckage of a superyacht that sank off Sicily this week, Italian officials told news agencies and local media Wednesday, leaving one person still missing.

Three bodies were brought ashore and two others were also found inside the shipwreck, Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, told the Associated Press, after divers were photographed by the agency unloading body bags. Cocina did not identify the deceased.

The British-flagged, 183-foot-long Bayesian was carrying 12 passengers and 10 crew members roughly half a mile from the Sicilian fishing village of Porticello when it encountered what authorities called a “violent storm” about 4 a.m. Monday.

Of the 15 people rescued, eight – including a 1-year-old girl – were taken to hospitals in conditions that were not life-threatening. The body of the yacht’s chef, identified as Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian Antiguan, was found during initial recovery efforts.

Among the passengers was Mike Lynch, 59, the British founder of the tech venture capital firm Invoke Capital and co-founder of the tech firms Autonomy and Darktrace. This summer, he was acquitted of all charges after a decadelong U.S. fraud trial related to the 2011 sale of Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard.

The voyage on the Bayesian, owned by a company controlled by Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was intended to be a celebration of his legal victory, Britain’s Telegraph reported.

Among those missing were Lynch; his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy; and attorney Chris Morvillo, a partner at Clifford Chance in New York who represented Lynch in the recently concluded legal battle, and his wife, Neda. Bacares, Lynch’s wife, was among the survivors.

It’s not clear exactly what type of storm struck the Bayesian, but weather data suggests it was probably a tornadic waterspout or severe thunderstorm.

Charlotte Golunski, a guest of Lynch who was rescued, described to Italian media holding onto her 1-year-old daughter, Sophie, amid the storm. “For two seconds I lost my baby in the sea,” she told Giornale di Sicilia. “Then I immediately hugged her again amid the fury of the waves.”

Lynch sold Autonomy, which was once England’s biggest software company, to Hewlett-Packard in 2011 for more than $11 billion. He was subsequently accused of overvaluing the company and was charged in the United States with fraud. He was acquitted in June.

The Bayesian was built in 2008 by Italian shipmaker Perini Navi, according to the SuperYacht Times.

The Sir Robert, a Dutch-flagged sailing vessel anchored nearby, responded immediately to help survivors before the Italian coast guard arrived.

The yacht sank to a depth of more than 160 feet. The first attempt by fire-brigade cave divers to search inside the yacht was unsuccessful, rescue authorities said.

Bryan Pietsch contributed to this report.

Tech billionaire's sunken superyacht claimed to be 'unsinkable' by CEO after capsizing in storm, six bodies found

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the company that built the superyacht which sunk off the coast of Sicily on Monday, said he was in "disbelief" upon learning of the vessel's tragic fate, revealing the yacht was meant to be "unsinkable".

Amy Roulston

Tech billionaire Mike Lynch's sunken yacht has been touted as "unsinkable" by the CEO of the company that built it, with six bodies recovered since the vessel went down off the coast of Sicily in Italy.

The vessel, with 22 tourists and crew aboard, was caught in a ferocious storm in the early hours of Monday (local time) while anchored at the popular holiday destination.

It is understood those on board were asleep at the time, many in their cabins on the lower decks.

Emergency services raced to the scene, rescuing 15 people, including a one-year-old baby and her mother.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of The Italian Sea Group, the company that built the Bayesian yacht, told Sky News UK the vessel's structure and drift keel made them "unsinkable bodies".

"Being the manufacturer of Perini (boats), I know very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said.

"And as Perini is a sailing ship, sailing ships, it is well known, are the safest in the most absolute sense."

The body of Canadian-Antiguan chef, Recaldo Thomas, was located in the water near the shipwreck shortly after the incident.

Italian authorities have since recovered five more bodies since the $27 million superyacht sank including tech billionaire Mike Lynch,  Morgan Stanley International chair, Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo.

Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, is still unaccounted for, with divers continuing their search efforts.

Mr Costantino said learning the yacht had sunk "put (him) in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other".

"This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact," he said.

Mr Costantino also told local television he blamed “human error” for the yacht’s sinking.

“It drives me insane,” he said.

“Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”

CCTV footage from a nearby villa emerged soon after the disaster, revealing the 56-metre luxury vessel, had sunk in less than a minute as a wild storm smashed the boat.

The 50-second clip showed the intense weather lashing the lit-up superyacht anchored some 200 metres from the shore before it disappeared and sank into the water.

“In just sixty seconds you can see the ship disappear," the owner of the villa told Italian news agency ANSA about the video.

“Of about twenty cameras installed in the house, only one was not disturbed by the wind and rain. You can clearly see what is happening. There was nothing that could be done for the boat. It disappeared in a very short time.”

Bayesian superyacht divers could have to RAISE wreck from seabed to find missing Hannah Lynch as search enters day 5

THE SEARCH for missing Brit teen Hannah Lynch has resumed off the coast of Sicily today after the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht.

Divers recovered five of the six missing passengers, including Hannah's dad Mike Lynch , from the sunken boat during a painstaking operation lasting several days.

A rescue boat sets out from Porticello Harbour this morning

Yesterday coastguard official Vincenzo Zagarola said he believes the 18-year-old is trapped inside the boat.

This is where rescuers recovered the five other tourists, trapped in the left side of the almost perfectly intact wreck some 160ft underwater on the ocean floor.

Hannah's mum Angela Bacares, 57, was one of the 15 rescued from the boat as it sank on Monday.

It comes as workers may have to dredge the yacht up from the sea in order to complete their investigation into how the luxury £14million vessel sank.

Bayesian yacht wreck may be RAISED from seabed amid search for missing teen

Zagarola said the issue will be raised as soon as they track down missing Hannah, the final passenger unaccounted for from the 22 originally onboard.

Bringing the wreck ashore will give investigators the chance to properly scour the boat as part of their probe.

Officials said on Thursday how it can take as long as "24 hours" to move just a metre inside the wreck as it sits on the sea floor, full of floating debris some 164ft down.

More details about the disaster surfaced yesterday as emergency workers revealed how the passengers tried to flee the water as it gushed onboard.

Witnesses said the boat's 246ft tall mast was struck by a "tornado", referring to a swirling cloud-like waterspout caused by a freak storm off the coast of Porticello Harbour.

It toppled the boat at around 5am on Monday, causing it to capsize and take on huge amounts of water as it plunged to the bottom of the sea.

Divers said the guests pulled from the wreckage fled their cabins on the right - or starboard - side of the boat and tried to "climb" to safety by heading for the left - port side - where they were found.

A source working in the investigation told Italian outlet Corriere : "We found them all on that side.

"We had maps with the layout of the cabins and the positions of the guests, and that's not where we recovered them."

The CEO of the firm that built the Bayesian yesterday told The Sun how crew error could be responsible for the disaster aboard the "unsinkable" boat.

Prosecutors from the nearby town of Termini Imerese spent more than two hours  quizzing Kiwi Captain James Cutfield , 51, about the tragedy this week.

Who is Mike Lynch?

yacht crew outfit

FORMER billionaire entrepreneur Mike Lynch was found dead on Thursday morning after a £14m luxury yacht capsized in a tornado off the coast of Sicily on Monday morning.

He is thought to be among the five bodies recovered from the sunken boat alongside Morgan Stanley chief Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy, lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda.

The tech tycoon, dubbed "Britain's Bill Gates", was one of the 22 people sailing onboard the £166,000 a week vessel.

Lynch, 59, was a serial entrepreneur having founded and sold tech and software companies with one of his biggest being Autonomy Corporation.

He was also been involved in Invoke Capital and cybersecurity company Darktrace.

As well as being awarded an OBE for his services to enterprise in 2006.

Born in Ilford, Lynch had a firefighter father from County Cork and a nurse mother from County Tipperary.

Away from work, Mike was happily married to wife Angela Bacares and the pair had two children together.

Angela is among those who have been rescued on the superyacht.

In 2023, the Sunday Times rich list set the couple's value at £852m.

But Mike was extradited to the US on fraud charges back in 2023 with a judge setting his bail at £79m.

Just weeks ago, Lynch was acquitted of criminal charges by a jury in San Francisco after a 12-year legal battle over the $11bn sale of his firm, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

The doomed yacht, named Bayesian, is also said to be owned by the Lynch family.

Putin rattled after Moscow ‘under attack from biggest ever drone strike’

Moscow came under one of the largest attacks yet by Ukrainian drones since the start of fighting in 2022, further rattling Vladimir Putin as he attempts to fight Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region.

The Ministry of Defence claimed that Russia downed 45 Ukrainian drones overnight, with 11 destroyed over the Moscow region, 23 over the Bryansk region, six over Belgorod, three over Kaluga and two over Kursk.

Moscow mayor Sergey Sobyanin said on his Telegram channel: ‘This was one of the biggest attempts of all time to attack Moscow using drones.’

He said strong defences around the capital made it possible to shoot down all the drones before they could hit their intended targets.

Some Russian social media channels shared videos of drones apparently being destroyed by air defence systems, which then set off car alarms.

Alexander Bogomaz, the governor of the Bryansk region, which borders Ukraine, reported a ‘mass’ attack on his region but that 23 drones were destroyed.

The moment the Russians shot down a Ukrainian UJ-22 kamikaze drone with a 500 miles range.

While Ukraine has been bogged down in a land conflict in eastern Europe in which the Russians have been driving forward slowly at a heavy cost to both sides, Kyiv has also been attacking Russia with drones.

Ukraine has targeted oil refineries and airfields in an attempt to weaken Russia’s fighting potential, and has also targeted the capital several times.

The drone attacks come as Ukrainian forces are continuing to push into Russia’s western Kursk region.

The daring incursion into Russia has raised morale in Ukraine with its surprising success and changed the dynamic of the fighting.

A major kamikaze drone strike by Ukraine on capital Moscow

But it is uncertain how long Ukraine will be able to hold the territory it has seized in Kursk.

It has also opened up another front in a fight where Ukrainian forces were already badly stretched.

The gains in Kursk come as Ukraine continues to lose ground in its eastern industrial region of Donbas.

The Institute for the Study of War, a think tank based in Washington, said in its daily report late on Tuesday that the Ukrainians had made additional advances in their incursion, now in its third week.

The Russian state news agency Tass reported that 31 people had died since Ukraine’s attack on Russia began on August 6, citing an unnamed source in the medical service – figures which are impossible to verify.
