Silver Lass (ex Silver Lal) was built by the renown J. A Silver boatyard in Rosneath, Scotland and is part of the Ormidale class of vessels designed by John Bain. She was originally built in 1961 for Mr James Ball Ritchie from the Isle of Man, who went on to fund the RNLI Oakley Class lifeboat based in Ramsey Harbour, although he sadly passed away before it was launched in 1970. The charitable trust set up by his late wife still goes towards funding the lifeboats for the Isle of Man to this day. It was then purchased by Mr Samuel Acton, from Conwy, Wales in 1965 before being purchased by Mr Richard Viney of London in 1969.
It stayed in the ownership of Mr Viney for 40 years, in which time he travelled with the vessel extensively throughout the Mediterranean, West and East and then into the Black sea and up the River Danube. In the later years of his ownership she returned to her permanent mooring on Cadogan Pier, Chelsea in London.
Throughout the entirety of Mr Viney’s ownership, the vessel was serviced and maintained by Ray Harrison who at the time was the overseas marine representative (all non capitals) for L Gardner & Sons, the father of Michael Harrison who owns Gardner Marine today. The vessel was put up for sale in 2008 and the new owner stripped out her tired interior and sent the engines to Gardner Marine for full overhaul. Two years into the restoration, progress came to a halt. Gardner Marine took ownership and embarked on the mammoth task of rebuilding what essentially amounted to an empty hull and a lock-up full of pieces – but a significant chapter of both Gardner Marine and Harrison history.
Please see the restoration section at the bottom of this page for a glimpse of the background of the four-year restoration.
On completion, she was taken back to the Mediterranean in the Summer of 2023 where she had spent so much time all those years ago. After a season of travelling between the Balearics, Sardinia and mainland Italy, the trip culminated with her being part of the Monaco Classic Yacht week where (she can just about be spotted) in the background behind the beautiful Rivas.

A host of modern upgrades have been installed in the background of the vessel including full air conditioning and heating systems, large battery capacity for long periods of silent use, hydraulic stabilisation, and all new navigational and steering systems. The 58’ (17.50m) James A. Silver SILVER LASS is now for sale with Yacht Broker Ed Cavendish. The luxury motor yacht is asking €1,200,000.
Built in 1961 by J.A. Silver in Rosneath, Scotland, and designed by John Bain, she is part of the Ormidale class. After an impeccable four-year restoration by Gardner Marine completed in 2023, SILVER LASS has been transformed with modern technology, a solid teak interior and rebuilt Gardner 6LW engines with new ZF hydraulic gearboxes. Her hull is cladded with full copper sheathing under the waterline, showcasing her superior quality. Having cruised the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the River Danube, SILVER LASS is back in the Med. Her superior amenities and robust build make her perfectly suited for all sorts of cruising grounds, including New England and all other waters of the US.
Her interior features solid reclaimed Burmese teak woodwork throughout, complemented by luxurious fittings and fabrics from Ralph Lauren, Waterworks, Lora Piana, Porto Romana, and Johanna Howard. The main salon and dining area boast a TV with an electric lift and a convertible coffee table that seats eight when lifted. LED ambient lighting and solid teak doors enhance her sophisticated ambiance. Modern upgrades include full air conditioning and heating systems, large battery capacity for silent use, hydraulic stabilization, and state-of-the-art navigational and steering systems.
SILVER LASS welcomes up to eight guests in four beautiful cabins. All cabins are equipped with individually thermostatically controllable air handlers, USB sockets, Carrera marble tops, unique handmade mirrors, reading lights and ample luggage storage.
The aft deck is the focal point of SILVER LASS’s alfresco space, boasting newly installed teak decks with epoxy-sheathed sub decks and a custom-made table crafted from reclaimed Burmese teak that seats eight. Wooden Ships Comments on this 68′ Silvers Twin Screw Motor Yacht
Built by James Silver & Co, Rosneath, Scotland in 1937 to a design by John Bain. Bain was the resident marine architect and subsequently became MD of the yard. He is well-known for his distinctive motor yacht designs which made the yard’s reputation.
This is one of 3 built to the same design and one of the largest vessels built in the yard.
She was an advanced design in her day with very modern lines and still has that enduring appeal of the period motor yacht.
The vessel has typical lines of her period with a long keel, raked stem and canoe stern.
Spacious aft deck with raised midships superstructure.
The vessel has been ashore in a dry dock for a number of years and has more recently been given an overhaul in present ownership, work which has now sadly come to a halt. Work has included refitting the deck and topsides with full detailed invoices available.
Her interior retains the same basic original layout as when she was launched and some mahogany joinery remains in the boat, however certain areas and cabins have been ripped out and altered. A new owner would take great pleasure in designing the interior to suit their own specific needs, retaining as much of the original as possible but creating a yacht fit for the modern world.
She has a pair of modern Perkins M135 diesels with very low hours.
This a superbly elegant yacht with a huge volume interior that could be refitted to an incredibly high standard and would look the part in any harbour around the world. A vast amount of time and money has gone into the boat in recent years, but a new custodian is now required to continue that effort and get her back to sea.
Described in the yachting press at the time of her launch as ‘one of the finest pleasure craft built on the Clyde’ she really is very special and has the potential to be a superb private yacht of the perfect size.
Length on deck 68’
Length Waterline 63’
Beam 15’2”
Draft 6’
Thames Tonnage 60TM
Construction
Planked in pitch pine, fastened with copper and bronze fastenings to sawn oak frames with 2 steamed intermediate timbers.
Mix of grown oak and ferrous strap floors across the centreline. All ferrous straps have been replaced.
Copper sheathed below the waterline.
External lead ballast keel with bronze bolts. Various bolts drawn and checked recently.
Topsides stripped to bare wood, repaired as necessary, re-caulked and painted.
New stem fitted above the waterline.
Swept teak decks, recently refurbished and in good condition.
Laid on oak deck beams.
A solid deck with no plywood sub deck, caulked and payed.
Decks have been completely recaulked with new paying and totally refastened with bronze screws.
Superstructure
Varnished teak raised topsides midships with teak wheelhouse.
2 x Perkins M135 6cyl naturally aspirated diesels.
Believed to have been installed in 2000, they made a passage from Gibraltar to Ireland and have done very little since, so the engine hours are very low.
Steel fuel tanks under the lower saloon sole, capacity unknown.
Plastic water tanks each side in the engine room.
Accommodation
Berths and Headroom
Headroom between 6’1” and 6’4” throughout the interior.
Owners accommodation aft has 4 cabins with 9 berths in total.
Forepeak cabin with 2 berths
General Description
The interior has not been worked on during the recent refit and will need a lot of consideration by the next owner.
There is some original mahogany joinery in the boat and her layout is that of the original design with owners cabins aft, large saloon and crew accommodation forward.
So as to facilitate the stripping of the underside of the deck and interior of the hull to waterline, parts of the interior have had to be removed particularly the aft accommodation. New cabin soles and supports have been fitted.
Galley layout looks to be original and is a good sized space that could be refitted to modern standards.
2 separate heads compartments with space for a 3 rd back aft.
