The Yacht Rock Revue is the greatest show on Surf and the finest tribute to ’70s light rock to ever perform anywhere. Ever. Their spot-on renditions of Hall & Oates, Michael McDonald, Steely Dan, and the rest of the Time-LifeInfomercial Catalog have enthralled fans across the United States. It goes without saying they have taken their act to the high seas, performing showcase sets on music cruises with Weezer, Kid Rock, Train, Zac Brown Band, Sister Hazel, and fitness guru Jillian Michaels.

By blurring the lines between a tribute, an original act, and a comedic troupe, the Yacht Rock Revue has forged a unique niche market and a special bond with their fans. The band attacks each song as if it were their own, and the energy exchanged between the band and the crowd has more in common with a stadium U2 show than that of a typical bar band. The band has won accolades ranging from “Best Place to Get Drunk With Your Dad” to “Best Overall Music Act in Atlanta” to “Best Place to Start an Extramarital Affair,” and has been name-dropped by the New York Times, Pitchfork, the Guardian UK,Spin, TimeOut New York, Billboard, MTV.com, and (probably) your mom at her last cocktail party.

Ridin’ The Storm Out: Train, REO Speedwagon, Yacht Rock Revue Play The Hits In Atlanta [Photos/Videos]

Train , REO Speedwagon , and Yacht Rock Revue  brought their joint summer tour to Ameris Bank Amphitheatre in Alpharetta, GA earlier this month for a soft-rock celebration.

The show was a hometown tour stop for Yacht Rock Revue, which first formed in Atlanta in 2007, and the band used its home-field advantage to get the evening off to an electrifying start despite a weather delay. Even with the late start, each band was able to play a full set for the packed audience.

REO Speedwagon kept it classic with fan favorites like “Can’t Fight This Feeling”, “Roll with the Changes”, “Keep On Loving You”, “Take It on the Run”, “Don’t Let Him Go”, “Keep Pushing”, and the particularly appropriate “Ridin’ the Storm Out”.

In addition to original hits like “Calling All Angels”, “Hey, Soul Sister”, “Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me)”, and “50 Ways to Say Goodbye”, Train incorporated covers of recent chart-toppers “Lose Control” by Teddy Swims and “Too Sweet” by Hozier , as well as “The Joker” by Steve Miller Band , and “Hey Jude” by The Beatles .

Atlanta’s Yacht Rock Revue to perform with Train, REO Speedwagon in Alpharetta

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Even if you’ve never heard of Yacht Rock, you’ve certainly heard of some of the genre’s staple artists, like the Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan and Boz Scaggs. And soon, you can hear the classics all over again thanks to Yacht Rock Revue!

Nicholas Niespodziani, a vocalist with Yacht Rock Revue, came to Atlanta News First to talk about the group’s upcoming performance in Alpharetta. Described by Rolling Stone as “the world’s premiere soft rock party band,” the group was formed in Atlanta in 2007 and now tours all across the country, playing beloved soft rock classics from the mid-’70s to mid-’80s.

Church of the Annunciation on Vasilevsky

There were once ten churches in St. Petersburg named after the Annunciation of the Mother of God, one of the most important holidays in the Eastern Orthodox calendar. This charming and unusual church on Vasilevskiy Island is one of only two surviving. The first wooden church was built here in the earliest years of St. Petersburg, when Vasilevskiy was planned as the center of the city, and rows of canals were built along what are now the Lines. In 1750, by which time Vasilevsky was predominantly a merchant quarter, construction began on a stone church, funded by wealthy members of the congregation, and principally the Chirkiniy family of brewers.

Although the building's architect is unknown, the Church of the Annunciation is a surprisingly original creation, successfully blending elements St. Petersburg Baroque and medieval Muscovite styles. Its layered bell-tower was for many years the tallest building on Vasilevsky Island. The round church comprised seven side-chapels, each containing a holy relic or copy of a famous icon. The Church of the Annunciation was once the parish church for the nearby Academy of Sciences, and many famous scholars were members of its congregation, including the great Russian polymath Mikhail Lomonosov.

In the mid 19 th century, the church became part of a convent, the auxiliary buildings of which can still be seen surrounding the church. However, on the orders of Nicholas I, the Church of the Annunciation was returned to its congregation, while the nuns were moved to the Voskresensky Novodevichy Convent in the south of the city. After the Revolution, the church was closed, its treasures ransacked, and the building used as a warehouse and workshops. During the Siege of Leningrad, the building was repeatedly bombed and remained in ruins till the early 1990s. The church's exterior has since been restored, and work continues on the interior, with the second floor already completed, including the restoration of original frescoes depicting Mount Ararat and God's covenant with Noah.

Address: 67, 8-ya Liniya, V.O. Metro station: Vasileostrovskaya From the metro: On exiting the station, cross Sredny Prospekt and walk up 7-ya Liniya. The church is only just over 100m away, set back from the street to your left. (5 minutes) Opening hours: Daily from 9am to 6pm.

Although the Church of the Annunciation is still undergoing much needed restoration, and only the second floor is currently open, the church is so close to Vasileostrovskaya Metro Station that it can easily be visited while exploring the island. Although regular services are not currently held in the church, it is used often for weddings, christenings and funeral services.
