The World’s First “Air Yacht” Would Sail in the Sky and Sea (With Zero Emissions)

vessel over the water flying in sky

Yachts and private planes make for luxurious ways to zip from one place to another, but recently, a businessman based in Germany and Italian designer Pierpaolo Lazzarini discovered what happens when they combine boats and jets: the ultra-sleek sky yacht. Equipped with eight counter-rotating electric engines powered by super-lightweight batteries and solar panels, the nearly 500-foot-long yacht can traverse the sky (and sea) at 60 knots for more than two days straight with zero emissions. Plus, aside from its full-electric mobility, the air yacht is sustainable in other ways too: It will be built entirely from carbon fiber, which is as high-strength as it is lightweight.

boat in the water

The 500-foot futuristic vessel comprises three main parts: a central compartment with a living room and dining area flanked by two inflatable helium blimps that house 10 suites.

Lazzarini’s design looks like something out of the future: a spacious living room and dining area housed within the sky yacht’s central torpedo-shaped structure that’s connected via eight carbon bridges (four on each side) to two 150-foot-long blimps. And the blimps that contain a whopping 14,125,867 cubic feet of helium that keep the vessel high in the sky, flanking the main compartment, aren’t just there to elevate the jet: Between the two, there are 10 guest suites, all of which boast 360-degree views.

The two balloon-like compartments on either side of the impressive vessel comprise an inflatable base that allows the innovative machine to float atop the water surface when the owner is in the mood to sail the sea versus the sky. Though being able to choose which medium makes the most sense for specific destinations sounds like an ideal way to travel, the sky yacht is, unfortunately, still quite a ways off from replacing typical ships and planes.

vessel in the water with stairs

The enormous sky yacht is too big to simply park at a marina while its guests climb aboard, so it comes equipped with a retractable staircase.

For the private owner who commissioned the estimated $627,511,500 sky yacht, however, his new mode of transportation is the way of the future. In fact, Lazzarini has promised that a first-scale model prototype will lift into the air later this year, and a collection of slightly varying designs (of different lengths) is currently in the early phases of both engineering and prototyping. So, perhaps we’ll all be passengers onboard a boat that flies before the end of the decade.

Who was on superyacht that sank off Sicily?

Twenty-two people were on board the Bayesian superyacht including British technology tycoon Mike Lynch, his wife and 18-year-old daughter, and Morgan Stanley International boss Jonathan Bloomer.

Details have emerged of the 22 people who were on board the superyacht that sank off the coast of Sicily.

The British-flagged vessel named Bayesian was carrying 12 passengers and 10 members of crew when it got into difficulty in the early hours of Monday.

Seven bodies have now been recovered. The other 15 people on board were rescued.

Here's what we know about those who were on the yacht.

British technology tycoon Mike Lynch was among the original six people missing. On Thursday, divers confirmed his body had been recovered.

Raised in Ilford, east London by Irish parents, the 59-year-old made millions with the software company Autonomy he set up in 1996.

He had an estimated net worth of £852m, according to the 2023 Sunday Times Rich List, and is believed to have owned the yacht.

Off the back of Automomy's global success, Mr Lynch was given the roles of science adviser to former prime minister David Cameron and non-executive director of the BBC.

The Cambridge maths and sciences graduate sold the firm for £8.64bn to US giant Hewlett Packard (HP) in 2011.

Dubbed the "British Bill Gates", Mr Lynch has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case related to the sale of Autonomy to HP in 2011.

HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American technology firm. Mr Lynch denied any wrongdoing.

In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges .

Hannah Lynch

Mr Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah Lynch was also on board. A body believed to be that of the teenager was recovered on Friday from the yacht wreckage.

She had been on holiday with her parents, having secured a place to study English at the University of Oxford, according to reports.

Her former school, Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, west London, said they were "incredibly shocked by the news that Hannah and her father are among those missing in this tragic accident" when the yacht first sank.

Angela Bacares

Mr Lynch's wife Angela Bacares was on board the yacht and was rescued.

The 57-year-old said she and Mr Lynch were awoken by the boat "tilting" at 4am - half an hour before it sank.

Jonathan Bloomer

Jonathan Bloomer is the chairman of Morgan Stanley Pic: Hiscox/ Linkedin

Jonathan Bloomer, the chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley International, was confirmed dead on Thursday.

According to the Financial Times, Mr Bloomer appeared as a defence witness for Mr Lynch during his US criminal trial and the pair were good friends. He also chaired Autonomy's audit committee.

The 70-year-old was the chief executive of UK-Hong Kong insurer Prudential until he was ousted by the board in 2005.

He was also chairman of the insurance provider Hiscox.

Judy Bloomer

Mr Bloomer's wife Judy was on the yacht trip with her husband. Divers confirmed they found her body on Thursday.

Mrs Bloomer was a former board member at The Eve Appeal charity, which focuses on gynaecological cancers.

The charity described her as a "brilliant champion for women's health and medical research... an incredible supporter, committee member, and trustee of our charity for over 20 years".

Recaldo Thomas

The yacht's on-board chef Recaldo Thomas died in the sinking.

He was Canadian-Antiguan and part of the crew of the Bayesian.

His body was the first to be recovered from the wreckage.

Chris Morvillo

US lawyer Chris Morvillo was among those divers found dead on Thursday.

The father-of-two worked on Mr Lynch's US fraud trial and was a partner of law firm Clifford Chance's US branch.

Mr Morvillo was assistant attorney for the Southern District of New York between 1995 and 2005 and worked on the terrorist investigation into the 9/11 attacks.

In a recent LinkedIn post, he thanked the legal team that helped win Mr Lynch's trial.

Signing off the post, he said: "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo.

"None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…."

Neda Morvillo

Mr Morvillo's wife Neda died in the disaster alongside her husband.

The 57-year-old had a luxury jewellery brand, which she ran under her maiden name Neda Nassiri.

Ayla Ronald

Ayla Ronald, a senior associate at Clifford Chance, survived the yacht disaster, the law firm confirmed.

The 36-year-old worked alongside Chris Morvillo in helping defend Mike Lynch in court.

Clifford Chance said in a statement: "Our utmost priority is providing support to the family as well as our colleague Ayla Ronald, who together with her partner, thankfully survived the incident."

She is originally from Christchurch, New Zealand, but lives in London, her father told local media there.

He said she was left "very shaken" but "she and her partner are alive".

Charlotte Golunski

Charlotte Golunski

Charlotte Golunski was on board the yacht and was rescued along with her one-year-old daughter, Sofia.

She spoke to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, confirming she survived the yacht sinking and told how she kept her daughter alive after she was rescued.

"I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning," she said.

"It was all dark. In the water I couldn't keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others."

The 35-year-old is a partner at one of Mr Lynch's firms - Invoke Capital - and has worked there since 2012, according to her LinkedIn profile.

She also worked at Hewlett Packard, which acquired Autonomy in 2011, for 11 months.

Before that, she studied history at the University of Oxford.

James Cutfield

The 51-year-old captain of the yacht spoke to Italian newspaper La Repubblica after he was rescued.

Mr Cutfield, from New Zealand, was taken for treatment at the Termini Imerese emergency unit, where he told the newspaper: "We didn't see it coming."

Leah Randall

Leah Randall was part of the Bayesian crew and survived the sinking.

She was pictured going ashore in Porticello on Monday morning and is from South Africa.

Her mother Heidi told Sky News said she was "beyond relieved that my daughter's life was spared by the grace of God".

"It doesn't make it any easier living with the heartache of those who have lost their lives [or are] missing. My very deepest condolences to the chef's family as they formed a great friendship," she said.

Spaceships and superyachts: How the industry is taking on the final frontier

The burgeoning space tourism market and the rise of next-generation airships has more in common with the yachting industry than you might think...

Star Trek icon William Shatner described his trip to the edge of space atop Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket as “the most profound experience”. The 90-year old actor was moved to tears as he recounted his 11-minute journey with Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos. “I’m so filled with emotion about what just happened,” he said.

Bucket lists the world over have been upgraded. The promise of such an extraordinary experience is helping power a boom in space tourism. Bezos has already sold more than £100 million in tickets for future rides into the unknown.

While New Shepard skirts the von Kármán line, which at 100 kilometres up is where humans are untethered from gravity, Elon Musk’s SpaceX is pushing higher and faster. The company has already taken astronauts and private citizens to the International Space Station, and Musk envisages ferrying many more back to the moon, on board his gigantic Starship rocket.

Scheduled to fly in 2024, Space Perspective will take adventurers to the edge of space, albeit in a degree more comfort than in the spacecraft of Bezos, Musk or Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic programme. Space Perspective’s Spaceship Neptune space capsule will gracefully ascend to 30,480 metres at 19.3 kilometres an hour – slow enough to appreciate the curved horizon of Mother Earth, before returning to terra firma at a similar pace.

There are no G-forces to withstand, and no weightlessness to contend with. Travellers will be cocooned in luxury, says Space Perspective founder and co-CEO Jane Poynter. The inaugural Space Perspective trip will take around six hours – plenty of time to order cocktails as you soak up the astonishing view.

“We certainly thought long and hard about how we’re going to get a lot of people to space, to have that quintessential astronaut experience of seeing Earth from space – and having it be gentle and comfortable,” Poynter says. “I’ve been in this industry a long time. I have tremendous respect for what they [Bezos et al] are doing and the technology that they’ve developed, but we are completely focused on our differentiated experience, opening up space to as many people as possible, people who have otherwise not imagined themselves going to space. That’s  our singular focus.”

There will be refreshments on board, Poynter says. “Of course, there’s a loo, Wi-Fi and everything that goes along with that. You don’t actually get the distraction of a weightless experience.”

Space Perspective carried out its first test flight in June 2021 from Kennedy Space Center. Poynter says it was “picture perfect”. The Spaceship Neptune capsule, lifted by space balloon, reached 30,480 metres, traversed the Florida peninsula, before splashing down in the Gulf of Mexico. The same route the passenger flights will eventually take. “That splash is a really safe way for us to terminate the flight; it’s fantastic,” Poynter says.

She sees the balloon as a major selling point. “Our flight is just inherently safe. The flight system has been flown by NASA and others thousands of times. It’s been very well tested. We’ve completely reimagined space flight. When we normally think about space flight, we think high Gs, a lot of acceleration. At 19 kilometres an hour, it’s a very gentle splashdown. The funnel below the capsule attenuates the splashdown, absorbs some of the impact. It truly is a spaceship that when it lands becomes a ship.”

When Space Perspective begins manned flights, it’ll be operating two Neptune capsules. “We are going to take it a little slow in the first year; we’ll do in the order of 24 flights, one every couple of weeks. Then grow very quickly from there. We’re planning to have each capsule do roughly 50 flights a year,” Poynter says.

While Space Perspective will initially operate out of Florida, the plan is to open up locations around the world. “As we grow, we add more capsules, and then every time we start operating in a new location, it automatically starts with two or three Neptune capsules.”

Poynter believes there are clear parallels with the superyacht industry when it comes to design and technology. “We have a number of people on our staff who have a lot of experience at sea, in designing and building boats and yachts,” she says. “The Neptune is a zero-emission spacecraft. Some of the things that we’re really interested in are already happening in the superyacht industry. Our vehicle is in the hydrogen economy, that’s how it operates. There are so many interesting things happening in the hydrogen world.” Hydrogen fuel cells, now in use on tenders, are a recurring feature of yacht and catamaran prototypes.

One Space Perspective hire is Vincent Bachet, who heads up manufacturing for the Neptune capsule. “He designed all the composite structures for the SpaceX Dragon capsule, as well as Falcon 9 (the partially reusable SpaceX two-stage-to-orbit medium-lift launch vehicle). He also has his own luxury yacht [composites] company,” says Poynter.

“Everything about space flight generally comes down to the weight of something. You’re always fighting that weight battle,” she continues.  “So everything over the last 10 years has been miniaturised; all the electronics and battery systems. It’s only going to get better over the next two or three years.”

Industry migration seems to go both ways. An electric boat business called the Arc Boat Company, set up by former SpaceX engineers, has attracted investment from stars Will Smith, Kevin Durant and Sean Combs. Its first boat will be a 7.3 metre called Arc One , built in aluminium. Boasting 475 horsepower, it’ll reach 35 knots and be able to run for three to five hours.

Flying a little closer to home, next-generation airships won’t take clients to the edge of space, but they will offer an experience that’s out of this world. A high-tech take on the blimps and Zeppelins of old, they promise to take owner-operators and customers on a leisurely voyage from one extraordinary location to another.

Guillaume Hoddé, CEO and founder of AirYacht, explains: “We want to offer a new yachting experience. Our pitch is ‘sail the sky’.” The first AirYacht is scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2026. “We will then be able to produce two units in 2027 and four units per year depending on the order book.”

Exploiting the buoyancy of helium, the AirYacht has a flying height of 3,048 metres and a cruising speed of 50 knots. It can travel for a week without landing or refuelling. When it comes to fuel consumption, it’ll be 10 to 50 times less per kilometre than an 80-metre superyacht. Hoddé is currently finalising the design of his inaugural craft with superyacht designer Franck Darnet of Darnet Design.

Hoddé agrees that there are many similarities between airships and superyachts. For one thing, they’re big, he says. “Our first AirYacht will be 200 metres long, with 750 square metres of space inside and more than 300 square metres of outside terraces. They are peaceful, graceful, beautiful designs, sailing in the sky like flying boats. Even if their cruise speed will be much higher than that of ships, they will be able to either stay above a place, ‘anchored’ in the sky, cruise at low speed if you want to enjoy a landscape or go overnight from Nice to Chambord at 50 knots.”

They will be highly visible (“like a superyacht in the Monaco bay”) but also discreet (“like a yacht going to a remote place that no one can access”). “They will allow you to enjoy a place, like a ship anchored or at the harbour, but anywhere – on the ground next to Chambord or in the middle of the Grand Canyon, as well as at sea,” Hoddé says.

“When we thought about the design, we looked into the literature from Jules Verne to sci-fi or steampunk; in people’s minds, airships are often described and drawn as flying boats. Our pitch to Franck was straightforward: we want a flying yacht for yachting enthusiasts who want to sail the sky but also to reach places where no one has been before. Our AirYacht must be a yacht when landed at sea, but also must be a chalet when landed in a snowy valley, and a lodge when landed in the middle of the savannah.”

AirYacht will also use cutting-edge materials in its design. “Our partners are renowned experts in the superyacht and aeronautical industries,” Hoddé says. “An AirYacht is a lighter-than-air machine. It doesn’t fly with the help of an engine, but only because it is lighter than air. That means that we are fighting for weight optimisation. We are looking for the best technologies in terms of composite materials, windows, energy management and safety. And for that, we are looking at the most advanced yachts and aircraft.

“Because an AirYacht will offer an experience that will be more unique than any superyacht has offered today, we have to look for the best technologies,” he continues. “Take the example of energy management. The Residence – that’s what we call the part of the AirYacht we live in – will be fully autonomous, relying only on hydrogen.”

So what will make an AirYacht experience unique? There are two key innovations, says Hoddé. “The living part of the AirYacht can be detached from the flying part of it. You will be able to land your Residence on the ground or the water, and enjoy life in the Residence, like at home.

“When flying, the AirYacht is also capable of stationary flight,” Hoddé adds. While stationary, passengers, and even a tender or a car, can be disembarked without any need for a ground support, with a kind of elevator. Imagine disembarking from your 200-metre-long AirYacht in the middle of a golf course.”

When it comes to journeys, Hoddé says his dream AirYacht adventure is flying just above the rainforest canopy for days: “feeling, smelling, hearing the rainforest from my terrace, feeling so privileged to be part of it. Many people dream of a flight above the savannah, then landing the AirYacht for a few days in their own lodge.”

Hoddé believes there’s a clear synergy when it comes to ownership, too. “Yes, we do imagine superyacht owners owning an AirYacht. The AirYacht owner is already a yacht owner who knows how to operate a superyacht. They love flying, discovering the world and living exclusive, unique experiences. You don’t have to follow the coast when going from A to B, just go in a straight line; hangaring your AirYacht will be done on the ground in a dedicated facility. Just find a place where you can build the hangar and it’s OK. Our partner will also offer a network of hangars for the airships worldwide.

“We are also targeting companies that want to create a new concept – air cruises. Imagine luxury cruises that have never been done before,” he continues. “There are so many possibilities; for example, the US from west to east or the best castles of France. Sleep in the sky, have dinner in the sky, do a pit stop at a castle, disembark a few hundred metres from it with the elevator, visit and then re-embark in the AirYacht.

“Clearly a pivot point of our company was thinking not as a pure aeronautical player but as a superyacht player. Our competitors are within the superyacht industry. An AirYacht will cost around the same price as an 80- to 100-metre superyacht and less than a business jet. All our partners are chosen for their capabilities to think outside the box; they must think yacht first! We want to take the best of the superyacht industry and the aeronautical industry in order to create a new industry and a new business. What we’re looking at is the birth of two new industries: airship superyachts and an air cruise business.”

Cookson Adventures is an early entrant in the air cruise space. The experiential travel company has inked a deal with Hybrid Air Vehicles to charter the next-generation Airlander 10 airship.

Scheduled to enter service from 2025, the Airlander 10 is Hybrid Air Vehicles’ first production aircraft. It can stay airborne for up to five days, has an operating altitude of 3,000 metres, can fly in all weather conditions and take off and land from virtually any flat surface.

The aircraft’s ability to cruise at 50 knots, with the option to reduce even further to 25 knots for wildlife viewing, opens up the tantalising prospect of observing the annual migration in Africa or cruising over open desert in the Middle East. Up to 16 can live on board.

Henry Cookson, founder of Cookson Adventures, says guests can expect similarities between the luxury model of Airlander 10 and the yachting experience. “They are both luxurious platforms for adventure,” he says. “Airlander 10 will have a captain and full crew to look after every need and we will also be able to bring experts on board to enhance the itinerary and ensure each expedition is bespoke to each group.

“There are similarities in design too, with a focus on clean lines. It’s sleek, contemporary and aerodynamic. The dining set-ups will make the most of the spectacular views, while private viewing platforms allow guests to clearly observe natural landmarks and local wildlife.”

So, does he believe this new market will become as big as the charter yacht business? “We think there’s a huge market,” Cookson says. “As with a superyacht, the journey will be an experience in itself, which guests will want to enjoy in supreme comfort. The slow pace of travel, the low cruising altitude and large panoramic windows will afford incredible views over landscapes that just can’t be appreciated from a traditional fixed-wing aircraft or helicopter. This in some ways  is similar to travelling on a superyacht, but at the same time will offer a very different view of the world.”

Cookson doesn’t think the Airlander will replace the superyacht experience; rather he thinks it will complement it. “Just as submersibles give guests the opportunity to see what’s below the water, the Airlander will allow you to arrive at your destination and gain an aerial perspective. Superyachts are great at exploring the coasts of our planet, subs are great for exploring the depths and airships will offer a new way to explore the interior of continents, such as Antarctica and Africa. The journey will be part of the enjoyment, as you see wildlife and landscapes from the comfort of the bar and the communal lounge.”

If you’re eager to sojourn in Earth orbit, Stellar Frontiers can help out. The latest venture from Geordie Mackay-Lewis, co-founder of experiential travel and yachting company Pelorus, is working with commercial space flight companies to put the affluent into orbit. To date, just a handful of individuals have made it to the International Space Station. It’s a rare club – but if you’re prepared to put in the training, Mackay-Lewis can put you in touch with the right people. His team will also get you on an astronaut training programme or organise a zero-gravity flight on board an Air Zero G aircraft.

“We are essentially creating the brokerage model for space,” explains Mackay-Lewis.  “This partially exists for the payload side, but not for the human side – we feel now is the right time to develop this service for the industry. Stellar Frontiers acts as the mission management company taking care of all the planning, training, comms and administration. We work closely with our clients to make space simple and with all the launch providers to ensure smooth mission management.”

The long-term future of space tourism, he predicts, will be dominated by SpaceX. “Their recent success with Inspiration4, becoming the launch provider for the International Space Station and Axiom Station (soon to be the first commercial laboratory and residential infrastructure in space) and with their new rocket Starship coming online soon, will allow them to bring down the cost of space travel significantly and maintain market dominance.”

Mackay-Lewis says there are distinct differences between space tourism and airship propositions. “I see these as very different sectors,” he says. “Airships will provide a sustainable, slow and luxury form of travel, which is timely for post-Covid trends. I also see these aircraft being run similarly to the airline model, by companies such as OceanSky Cruises.”

Think of them as explorer superyachts of the skies, he says. “You will be able to access all remote areas of the planet in comfort and safety from your airship in the near future. I see them as very similar platforms with similar clientele. I think there will be less private ownership and much more of a charter market.”

However, while airships and spacecraft differ in functionality and design,  they share a common drive toward sustainability and luxury, Mackay-Lewis says. “All sectors are developing more sustainable technologies, fuels and materials in line with efficient econometrics and consumer demand. And, likewise, both the airships and now the space sector recognise that the more luxurious they can make their propositions, the more appealing the product is to those who can actually afford it. A good example is industrial architect and designer Philippe Starck, who has been commissioned to design luxury pods for the Axiom Station and a new astronaut training facility for Orbite. This is just a snapshot of what is to come for the luxury space sector.”

So, can Mackay-Lewis envisage a time when superyacht owners will jaunt into space before splashing down near their yachts?

“It’s a lovely idea, but maybe a little fanciful for a while,” he says. “As with all yacht owners, time is the commodity, so I can see them using space travel to access their yachts in less time. [Elon Musk’s] Starship could deliver them to  the other side of the planet in less than an  hour; however, maybe supersonic flight will catch up before then.”

One thing, though, is for sure. For superyacht owners interested in space, many exciting options loom on the horizon.

But what was supposed to be a routine pleasure cruise aboard a superyacht turned deadly all the same on the morning of Aug. 19 when the 184-foot Bayesian got caught in a storm and sank off the coast of Sicily .

"I can't remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that," Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting told NBC News . "You know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size."

Of the 22 people onboard, including crew, seven people died. The last of the bodies was recovered Aug. 23, an expectedly sad coda to what had already been a tragic week as the search for answers as to how this happened got underway.

And to be sure, every minute of the Bayesian's ill-fated outing is being fiercely scrutinized, starting with the general seaworthiness of the vessel itself.

Because, frankly, this was a freak occurrence.

Cars collect troves of data about traffic and road hazards. Should they share it?

"Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday," Richter explained. "They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed."

But in this case, a $40 million yacht sank, seven people are dead—including a billionaire tech mogul and his 18-year-old daughter—and morbid fascination doesn't need a second wind.

Here is how the story of the Sicily yacht tragedy has unfolded so far:

What happened to the yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily?

The Bayesian had set off from the Sicilian port of Milazzo on Aug. 14 at capacity with 12 guests and 10 crewmembers aboard.

The aluminum-hulled vessel was built in 2008 by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi and registered in the U.K. Cruise sites listed it as available for charter at $215,000 per week, per the Associated Press.

On the morning of Aug. 19, the superyacht was anchored off the coast of Porticello, a small fishing village in the Sicilian province of Palermo (also the name of Sicily's capital city), when a violent storm hit.

The vessel "suddenly sank" at around 5 a.m. local time, seemingly due to "the terrible weather conditions," the City Council of Bagheria announced shortly afterward, per NBC News .

At the time, only one person was confirmed dead—the ship's chef—but six others were said to be missing. The 15 survivors—who managed to make it onto an inflatable life boat, according to emergency officials—were rescued that morning by the crew of another yacht that had been nearby when the storm hit.

"Fifteen people inside," Karsten Borner, the Dutch captain of the ship that was able to help (the Sir Robert Baden Powell), told reporters afterward, per Reuters. "Four people were injured, three heavily injured, and we brought them to our ship. Then we communicated with the coast guard, and after some time, the coast guard came and later picked up injured people."

When the storm hit, his boat ran into "a strong hurricane gust," Borner said, "and we had to start the engine to keep the ship in an angled position."

They "managed to keep the ship in position," he continued, but once the storm died down, they realized the other boat that had been behind them—the Bayesian—was gone.

The wreck ended up settling 165 feet below the surface, according to Italy's national fire department.

Fire officials said that divers, a motorboat and a helicopter were deployed to search for the missing.

Meanwhile, footage was captured of the ship capsizing on closed-circuit TV about a half-mile away from where it was anchored.

In the video obtained by NBC News, the illuminated 250-foot aluminum mast of the ship appears to list severely to one side before disappearing completely. Survivors recalled having just a few minutes to literally abandon ship.

Who were the seven people who died when the yacht Bayesian sank?

The tragedy initially became headline news because billionaire tech mogul Mike Lynch—"Britain's Bill Gates," some U.K. media called him—was among the missing. His body was ultimately recovered Aug. 22 .

"They told me that suddenly they found themselves catapulted into the water without even understanding how they had got there," Dr. Fabio Genco, head of the Palermo Emergency Medical Services, told NBC News Aug. 22. "And that the whole thing seems to have lasted from 3 to 5 minutes."

Genco said he got to Porticello about an hour after the Bayesian capsized.

Survivors "told me that it was all dark, that the yacht hoisted itself up and then went down," he said. "All the objects were falling on them. That’s why I immediately made sure, by asking them questions, if they had any internal injuries."

Why did the yacht sink?

Italian prosecutors are investigating to determine what transpired before the boat went down, according to NBC News.

Meanwhile, the CEO of shipbuilder Perini's parent company The Italian Sea Group defended the vessel itself as "unsinkable."

Perini boats "are the safest in the most absolute sense," Giovanni Costantino told Sky News Aug. 22 . What happened to the Bayesian "put me in a state of sadness on one side and of disbelief on the other," he continued. "This incident sounds like an unbelievable story, both technically and as a fact."

Costantino said it had to have been human error that led to the boat sinking, declaring, "Mistakes were made."

"Everything that was done reveals a very long summation of errors," he told newspaper Corriere della Sera Aug. 21, in an interview translated from Italian. "The people should not have been in the cabins, the boat should not have been at anchor."

The weather was "all predictable," he continued, adding that the storm "was fully legible in all the weather charts. It couldn't have been ignored."

The yacht's captain, identified as James Cutfield of New Zealand, was taken to Termini Imerese hospital for treatment. From there, he told La Repubblica, per Sky News , that he didn't see the storm coming.

Borner, the captain of the ship that rescued the 15 Bayesian survivors, told NBC News that he noticed the storm come in at 4 a.m. local time, and saw what looked to him like a waterspout, a type of tornado that forms above water.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research posted on X Aug. 19 that it had "confirmed 18 waterspouts today off the coasts of Italy. Some were powerful waterspouts, one of which may have been responsible for the sinking of a large yacht off of Sicily."

Borner said he didn't know why the Bayesian sank so quickly, guessing "it may have something to do with the mast, which was incredibly long." (A tall mast, even with its sails down, means there's more surface area exposed to wind, which can result in tipping.)

Confirming that one person was dead and six unaccounted for immediately following the wreck on Aug. 19, Salvo Cocina of Sicily's civil protection agency told reporters that a waterspout had struck the area overnight.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.

The 59-year-old founder of software firm Autonomy had been on the trip with his wife Angela Bacares and their 18-year-old, Oxford-bound daughter Hannah to celebrate his recent acquittal in the U.S. on fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from the $11.7 billion purchase of his company by Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

In a bizarre turn of events, Lynch's co-defendant at trial, Stephen Chamberlain, the former vice president of finance at Autonomy, died after being taken off life support following a road accident on Aug. 17. Chamberlain's attorney told Reuters Aug. 20 that his friend and client had been out for a run when he was "fatally struck" by a car.

Meanwhile, multiple people who contributed to Lynch's defense were on the cruise with him and his family.

The bodies of Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer—who testified on Lynch's behalf—and his wife Judy Bloomer, as well as lawyer Chris Morvillo, a partner at the U.S. firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda Morvillo, a jewelry designer, were recovered on Aug. 21 .

In a LinkedIn post thanking the team that successfully defended Lynch, Morvillo wrote, per Sky News , "And, finally, a huge thank you to my patient and incredible wife, Neda Morvillo, and my two strong, brilliant, and beautiful daughters, Sabrina Morvillo and Sophia Morvillo. None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home. And they all lived happily ever after…"

The first casualty confirmed Aug. 19 was the ship's Canadian-Antiguan chef, later identified as Recaldo Thomas.

"He was a one-of-a-kind special human being," a friend of Thomas told The Independent . "Incredibly talented, contagious smile and laugh, an incredible voice with a deep love of the ocean and the moon. I spoke to him nearly every day. He loved his life his friends and his job."

Hannah's body was the last of the missing six to be found , with divers bringing her remains ashore on Aug. 23.

Lynch and Bacares, who was rescued, also shared a 21-year-old daughter, according to The Times.

While awaiting trial, Lynch—who maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings—had spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco. Back home in London afterward, he admitted to The Times in July that he'd been afraid of dying in prison if he'd been found guilty. (He faced a possible 25-year sentence.)

"It's bizarre, but now you have a second life," he reflected. "The question is, what do you want to do with it?"

11 Great Girls Trip Destinations, From Antigua to Montauk

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

There's nothing better than some uninterrupted girl time, whether it's going out to dinner or just hanging out on the couch binging TV shows . On some occasions, though—and especially for long-distance best friends—a trip might make the most sense to finally get some quality catch-up time.

The best girls trips always strike a balance between relaxing and rousing. You should never come back home feeling the same as you left (especially if that feeling was tired, overwhelmed, or deflated). But between settling on a destination and coming up with an itinerary, there can be a lot of pressure put on the friendship and high expectations to plan the perfect getaway. To make the next getaway a bit easier on your group, we've tapped travel writers and specialists to dish the details on their favorite girls trip destinations they've gone to, plus where to stay and what to do while visiting. From national park stays to resort getaways, here are 11 tried-and-true girls trip ideas to pull inspiration from for your next trip.

Montauk, New York

Group photo of a girls trip to Montauk

Every June, a group of 10 of us clear our calendars, pack our bags, and head out east for a four-day weekend in Montauk . If you live in or near New York City , it’s about a four-hour drive with traffic, or a few hours on a Jitney, making it an ideal summer destination to visit if you only have a few days to get away. There’s lots to do—from restaurants to beaches to shopping to bars—so you won’t run out of places to be and things to see. Book a stay at one of Duryea’s sunset cottages, then head to lunch right by the water at their restaurant (make sure to split the iconic Lobster Cobb Salad). For the chance of a celeb or influencer sighting, head to Surf Lodge , a popular outdoor bar with good music and even better sunset views. My girlfriends and I spend most of the weekend lounging on the beach, chatting nonstop, already planning our next trip back. — Meaghan Kenny , commerce editor

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

For my mother’s 70th birthday, we chose to stay at the Sea Pines Resort in South Carolina at one of the premier villas. We traveled with a large multi-generational group, millennials to baby boomers. The house was immaculately outfitted with a massive kitchen and lovely pool, and we were close enough to the beach that a group of us walked every morning for sunrise yoga. Breakfasts were a grazing affair, all of us getting up on our own schedule and pulling together whatever we felt like eating. One afternoon we took a private boat out to Daufuskie Island for a golf cart tour of this incredibly preserved piece of history. We spent a day on the beach, and one in Savannah . To keep everyone busy, we had a chef come in one night for a cooking lesson and he then prepared dinner for us all in the villa kitchen. We also brought in a local artist to lead us in a guided “paint and sip” experience. It truly was so special to have this time together and it helped me plan so many trips for clients looking for a similar “girls getaway” experience. — Rebecca Alesia , travel specialist for Condé Nast Traveler

Cartagena, Colombia

I recently traveled to Cartagena, Colombia, for a birthday trip with two friends. The South American city had been on my travel wish list for a while and did not disappoint. The city is filled with clothing boutiques, restaurants, and a very, very lively nightlife, so it’s impossible to be bored.

We stayed at a gorgeous Marriott Bonvoy Home and Villas property , with a staff that was not only available to answer any questions at anytime, but truly became like family by the time we left. The property is also a must-stay as it offers the rare opportunity to swim in a rooftop pool with views of the city, iconic churches, and buildings in the distance.

Girls trip in Cartagena Colombia

I highly recommend booking any curated experience with Jacada Travel , especially the private salsa lesson, which includes a history of Afro-Colombian culture and other dance movements from the region like champeta. They also offer private yacht excursions to the nearby turquoise waters of Rosario Islands, perfect for some beach time and cocktails with friends. Some of the best dishes that we enjoyed in Cartagena were by the staff at our villa, including traditional Colombian rice and tender roasted chicken. If you do decide to explore one of the city's restaurants, I highly recommend Norma Ristorante for its live music and amazing pasta dishes and grilled seafood. For drinks, don’t miss a lesson on Colombian rums paired with chocolates at El Arsenal: The Rum Box. Request a lesson with Koko, she's the best host. — Kristin Braswell , contributor and travel specialist for Condé Nast Traveler

Scottsdale, Arizona

I went to Scottsdale on a girl's trip in 2021, and the city will forever hold a special place in my heart. It was such a memorable destination, with enough to appeal to each of our interests. As design lovers, we got to soak in Frank Lloyd Wright's talent at Taliesin West and the midcentury-modern vibes of our hotel, Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Bungalows . Our favorite restaurant was a hidden gem inside the Fairmont Princess , La Hacienda . The highlight of our trip was definitely the spa at Well & Being Spa —it was a stunning little getaway with the best views. — Iona Brannon , contributor

Puglia, Italy

Street sign in Puglia

What could be better than a girls trip to Italy during the fall ? The crowds have dissipated, the rates have dropped and the weather is tepid and beautiful, especially in southern Italy. Puglia offers up coastal Italian eye candy of whitewashed villages, classic winding cobblestone streets, and turquoise Mediterranean waters. The interior has fertile rolling countryside with olive groves and vineyards. There’s an abundance of interesting cities to see and all are easily connected by train for day trips. We staged the headquarters of our girls trip at Naturalis Bio Resort & Spa, a small luxury hotel located in Salento, about a 25-minute drive from Lecce. It has a warm, earthy and nurturing vibe, ideal for a spa and wellness girls getaway. Our room had a spectacular extra-large sunken hot tub with a window overhead to see the sky above. Perfect to pair with a bottle of wine and added bubbles. The hospitality and service are warm and welcoming, and the food is artful, fresh, and delicious. A trip to the spa a must. I recommend a fun day trip into the port city of Otranto for boutique shopping, fresh seafood dining, and taking in the aquamarine waters of the Adriatic. — Jessica Avery , travel specialist for Condé Nast Traveler

While there’s nothing better than soaking up some good Miami sunshine or letting loose at the 305’s liveliest clubs, don’t be surprised if you leave this place in a serious food coma. Whether you’re in the mood for Caribbean, Cuban, or Ethiopian, Miami’s multicultural food scene is one of its highlights. My last escapade here with friends was on the heels of Caribbean Heritage Month, celebrated every June. There’s so much to do in Miami that when planning your itinerary, your besties might be torn on how to narrow it down. What activities and excursions can’t you do? Of course, Miami has a plethora of beaches where you can lay out or catch some waves, from Hobie Beach to the historic Virginia Key Beach Park. If you’re in the mood for a little retail therapy, you can hit up one of its many boutiques and shopping centers, like the Miami Design District. There’s practically a club on every block where you and your friends can dance the night away, so you can take your pick based on where you’re feeling the vibe. You can also get your creative wheels turning by checking out Miami’s art scene. Art Basel is one of the city's most popular annual exhibits, among several others. In terms of where to stay, Florida’s pink hotels can make you feel like you’re staying in one big Barbie house, so The Goodtime Hotel in Miami is my highest recommendation if you want to stick to the theme of your trip. — Johnaé De Felicis , contributor

I’ve been going to Antigua for over seven years now for all types of trips, but I really love it for a relaxing getaway with my girls. Antigua is the land of 360 degree beaches, so no matter where you are on the island, there’s a beach close by that is beautiful with clean sand and clear water. This makes Antigua an automatic go-to for me and my girls because whether we want to have a relaxing beach day, throw a beach fete, or hit a beachside workout, there are numerous options to do so throughout the island. Antigua has beautiful resorts, villas, and hotels. My go-to is Hodges Bay , which has a private island property reachable by a quick water taxi. For a more resort-central stay, Curtain Bluff has top of the line spa and restaurants to enjoy. Antigua also pairs the best restaurants with amazing views—my favorite is Sheer Rocks, which is perched on a beachside cliff. For the best seafood and authentic island vibes, Papa Zouk is the place to go. Out of all the islands I’ve traveled to, Antigua has the best and safest fetes and clubs; check out Vyce for a great night. — Sidnee Michelle Douyon , senior digital editor and host for Black Enterprise

Puerto Rico

To celebrate some big accomplishments in our friend group—from one friend completing her MD program to another finishing her band’s first tour—we gathered our now nationally-dispersed college crew for an adult spring break trip to Puerto Rico . Our itinerary struck the perfect balance of wild outdoor adventure, beachy relaxation, and giggly fun, with plenty of flexibility to tailor the experience toward any of these trip styles based on personal preferences. We loved how accessible it was to fly to San Juan from the US (not to mention how easy it was to get around by car or Uber when we got there), and that we didn't even need to pack our passports . Upon arriving from our respective cities, the six of us piled into a rental car and explored everything from the historic charm and boutique shops of Old San Juan to the tropical rainforest swimming holes and natural water slides (yes, we slid down actual waterfalls) of El Yunque National Forest . Highlights included night kayaking to see the sparkling bioluminescence, snorkeling with sea turtles at Escambrón Marine Park in San Juan, and sipping unique wine-based cocktails at one of the world's best bars: La Factoría . Airbnb and hotel hopping was the structure for our week-long stay, but my favorite was the idyllic Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve . Though these trips always seem to get harder and harder to plan as we get older, the pricelessness of a full heart, a recharged soul, and a little bit of a lost voice from laughing hard with the ladies is beyond worth it. — Alexandra Toto , contributor

Loudoun County, Virginia

Goodstone Inn garden

One of my favorite places for a girls trip is Virginia's wine country in Loudoun County. The acres and acres of vineyards lining the roads make for beautiful scenery while driving, and the food and drink scene is exceptional. One of my favorite wineries in the area is Greenhill Vineyards , which offers incredible views, wine tastings, and scrumptious bites to go with your glass of vino. Fun fact: The winery's sparkling wine was featured in gift bags at the 2016 Academy Awards. There are plenty of places to stay in Loudoun County, but I love Goodstone Inn (shown at right) where guests stay in boutique cottages that are nestled across 265 pristine acres on the hillside. Each cottage or house can accommodate two to eight people, so depending on the size of your squad, you'll all be able to stay in one private villa-style home complete with kitchens and private bathrooms. — Megan duBois, contributor

Colorado Historic Hot Springs Loop

One of my all-time favorite girls trips that can be dressed up or dressed down to be as outdoorsy (or not) as you wish is the Colorado Historic Hot Springs Loop. We fly into Denver and rent a car, or road trip over to the Centennial State and hop onto the open road to start the adventure. Popping over to Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort is easy, it sits on the banks of a burbling creek, and offers loads of adorable cabins, plus there are multiple, cheaper campgrounds nearby. For the more splurge-worthy trips, The Four Seasons in Vail just did a huge spa uplift and refreshed the treatments menu, and since it’s so centrally located, it’s an easy year-round stay in the mountains between Glenwood Springs and Steamboat Springs. No matter what your lodging style is, you’ll fall in love with the hot springs views (and lack of crowds) at Avalanche Ranch , as I did when I first visited in 2018. Book a month or two early, as they often sell out. Of course, the can't-miss feature of this trip is the hot springs, but one of my favorite off-highway stops is Brown Dog Pizza in Telluride, which sits on the main thoroughfare and boasts epic mountain views. Plus, if you’re going on a winter girls trip, nearly all of these locales offer incredible skiing access. — Emily Pennington , contributor

Philadelphia

I've spent New Years in Philadelphia a few times, as well as girls trips to this city in other times of the year. My girls and I have gone to some of the museums around town after cocktails and recreated a number of the paintings. Plus, there are truly great restaurants, interactive sensory exhibits, and a few speakeasies that we frequent when in the area. My recommendation on where to stay: W Philadelphia . It's been around for a while but there's been a change in managerial staff and exciting changes to the restaurant's menu; plus, the hotel itself has some of the best views in the city outside of the Sky Lounge. If you book ahead, try and get a corner room. — Shayna Conde , travel journalist
