Body of Mike Lynch Among Five Pulled From Wrecked Yacht

M ike Lynch, the British tech tycoon who went missing after his luxury yacht suddenly sank off the coast of Sicily, was confirmed dead by Italian officials.

Lynch’s body was identified Thursday as one of five pulled from the wreckage of the Bayesian. Divers were still looking for the body of his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah.

Fifteen people were rescued from the vessel when it sank just before sunrise Monday.

The body of the boat’s chef, Recaldo Thomas, was retrieved from the sea on Tuesday.

Among those presumed dead are Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, Judy, and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda. Officials said they wouldn’t release the names of the recovered bodies until the families had identified them.

The group was celebrating Lynch’s acquittal on U.S. fraud charges after a yearslong saga involving the sale of his software company to Hewlett Packard for $11 billion.

Italian investigators searching the wreckage of the superyacht said it appeared largely intact, reporting that the 180-foot-long yacht was lying on its side on the sea floor.

As rescue teams search for Lynch’s daughter, investigators turned to the many questions surrounding the sinking of such a large vessel.

The coast guard said it capsized from the storm and flooded.

The stern hatch—an opening at the rear of the vessel, below the name—was found partially open, divers said Thursday. If it was open at the surface a lot of water would have entered, speeding up the sinking.

The investigators are also looking whether the yacht’s keel—a blade extending into the water from underneath—was lowered. The keel gives a vessel stability while sailing or anchored in the open sea but it’s retracted when it goes into a marina because of shallow water levels.

Officials said investigations were continuing and declined to give further details.

Maritime experts said that the yacht’s giant mast, which stretched nearly 240 feet into the sky, could have been a factor in its rapid sinking.

The mast could have snapped in the storm, causing it to fall and damage the hull, or could have been uprooted by strong winds if not tightly secured.

“That would have made a gaping hole and water could have rushed in,” said Takis Tsakos, founder of Athens-based Yachtways GP, which rents out luxury yachts in the Mediterranean. “It was also a relaxed evening—doors and windows could have been open with more water coming in as the boat tilted,” Tsakos added. “These will be determined when the yacht is pulled out of the water.”

The yacht was anchored near the port of Porticello overnight Sunday when a storm hit the coast, creating a tornado-like column of air and water known as a waterspout. The crew apparently had little warning and there was no distress signal from the yacht, the coast guard said.

Born to Irish parents and raised in Ilford, east London, Michael Richard Lynch attended private school on a scholarship before studying at the University of Cambridge.

He would go on to found software company Autonomy in the 1990s. A decade later, and with the company’s stock soaring, Lynch became the U.K.’s first internet billionaire, dubbed by the national media as the British answer to Bill Gates.

Autonomy was bought by American tech company Hewlett Packard in 2011, in a deal later described as one of the worst in Silicon Valley history.

The Hewlett Packard CEO who approved the deal resigned within a year. Lynch also left the company in 2012.

Hewlett Packard took an $8.8 billion write-down later that year and said it was duped into overpaying.

In 2018, Lynch was charged by the U.S. government over allegation that he and his lieutenants had used false and misleading documents to make Autonomy more attractive to a potential purchaser. He unsuccessfully fought extradition to the U.S.

Lynch was acquitted of criminal charges in June, ending the nearly 13-year saga.

The south Italy cruise was planned as a celebration of the courtroom victory, according to people familiar with the matter.

Michael de la Merced reported on Mike Lynch’s career and legal battles over the course of 13 years across two continents.

A cruise on the Mediterranean Sea aboard a superyacht was supposed to be a celebratory event for the British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch , who was acquitted in June of fraud charges tied to the sale of his company, Autonomy, to the tech giant Hewlett-Packard.

Instead, it turned into a disaster after the yacht, a 180-foot boat called the Bayesian, sank off the coast of Sicily in a violent storm. Of the 22 people aboard, 15 were rescued and seven others died . Search operations ended on Friday after the final body was recovered from the site of the sunken yacht .

Here’s what we know about the passengers.

Mike Lynch and his family

Mr. Lynch, 59, is a British software entrepreneur who had once been described as his country’s Bill Gates. He founded the software firm Autonomy, which analyzed clients’ unorganized data, and turned it into one of the most prominent British technology companies of its time. He became a widely known corporate leader, who advised David Cameron, the British prime minister at the time, and joined the board of the BBC.

In 2011, Mr. Lynch sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion, which was far above its market value, earning him hundreds of millions. But HP investors almost immediately soured on the transaction, and the American tech giant quickly fired its chief executive — and then Mr. Lynch.

HP later accused Mr. Lynch of misleading it about the state of Autonomy’s business, setting off a decade-long legal ordeal for the British executive, who denied the accusations. U.S. prosecutors charged him and other executives with fraud, and Autonomy’s chief financial officer was convicted in 2018.

Despite appeals to the British government, Mr. Lynch was extradited to the United States last year and was confined to a townhouse in San Francisco ahead of his criminal trial, which began in March. Facing the possibility of decades in prison if convicted, Mr. Lynch and another colleague were instead acquitted of all charges.

An official in Palermo, Sicily’s capital, said on Thursday that Mr. Lynch’s body had been recovered. His wife, Angela Bacares, 57, accompanied him on the yacht, and she was rescued on Monday when it sank. She was a consistent presence at his trial in the United States. Records show that she controlled Revtom, the company listed as the owner of the Bayesian.

The body of Hannah Lynch , Mr. Lynch and Ms. Bacares’s 18-year-old daughter, was thought to be recovered on Friday.

The other guests

Jonathan Bloomer, 70, chair of Morgan Stanley’s international arm and the chairman of Hiscox, an insurance provider that trades on the London Stock Exchange, was on the yacht when it sank, along with his wife, Judy Bloomer, 71. Their bodies are thought to be among those recovered, but Italian authorities have not identified them.

Christopher J. Morvillo, 59, a New York-based partner at the international law firm Clifford Chance, was also on the yacht. A former federal prosecutor who comes from a family of prominent lawyers, Mr. Morvillo represented Mr. Lynch during his criminal trial in San Francisco. His wife, Neda, 57, was with him on the yacht. Their bodies are also assumed to be among those recovered.

“We are in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident,” a representative of Clifford Chance said in a statement.

Surviving passengers rescued from the yacht include Charlotte Golunski, a partner at Mr. Lynch’s venture firm, Invoke Capital; Ms. Golunski’s husband, James Emslie; and their one-year-old daughter Sophie. Also rescued were Ayla Ronald, a lawyer at Clifford Chance, and her partner, Matthew Fletcher.

The yacht had a crew of 10, and nine were rescued. The body of the chef, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered from the water, the Sicilian Civil Protection Department said.

This is the horrifying moment a tourist plunged nearly 30ft down a sinkhole in Malaysia.

The 48-year-old Indian woman has not been seen since the pavement opened up and swallowed her as she walked through the Dang Wangi area of Kuala Lumpur on Friday.

Rescuers cordoned off the collapsed section and used an excavator to clear debris but there was no sign of her.

Police now believe she may have been swept away by an underground water current.

Local police chief Sulizmie Affendy Sulaiman declined to comment when asked about the possible condition of the woman, or the cause of the incident.

Rusdi Mohamad Isa, head of the Kuala Lumpur police, said there was a strong water flow underground and that the woman may have been swept away.

He told the national Bernama news agency the search required careful planning because it involves public infrastructure.

Shutting off pipes or drains, for example, could cause flooding in the area, he said, adding: ‘We can’t act recklessly.’

Rusdi said a soil slip was reported last year in the same location where the sinkhole appeared but that it was fixed.

He said businesses in the area have been advised to close temporarily for safety reasons.

The woman had come to Malaysia with her husband and several friends about two months ago for a vacation and they were due to return home Saturday, he said.

Solingen stabbing: Three killed and five seriously injured in knife attack at German festival - as suspect on the run

People were celebrating the 650th anniversary of the 160,000-strong city when the attack happened at about 9.45pm local time.

Three people have been killed and five left seriously injured in a knife attack at a German festival, police have said.

The "perpetrator" fled the scene and is still at large, officers said. They believe the stabbings were carried out by a lone attacker.

Passers-by were reportedly stabbed at random in the Fronhof market square where live bands were playing in the western city of Solingen at about 9.45pm local time on Friday.

Police put the number of wounded at eight, saying five were seriously injured.

"Both victims and witnesses are currently being questioned," officers said. "The police are currently searching for the perpetrator with a large team."

The region's top security official, Herbert Reul, who visited the scene in the early hours of Saturday, told reporters it was a targeted attack on human life but declined to speculate on the motive.

"None of us knows why," he said. "I can't say anything about the motive now." He said the attacker left the scene "relatively quickly".

"Our security authorities are doing everything they can to catch the perpetrator and investigate the background of the attack," Germany's interior minister, Nancy Faeser, said in a post on X.

"The perpetrator must be quickly caught and punished to the fullest extent of the law," said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

According to Sky News' European correspondent Siobhan Robbins , a police operation in the area is still ongoing.

People had gathered for the Festival of Diversity which started on Friday to mark the 650th anniversary of the 160,000-strong city.

The event was supposed to run through to Sunday, with several stages in the city offering attractions such as live music, cabaret and acrobatics.

The festival has now been stopped and people have been told to leave the area, Robbins said.

Local newspaper Solinger Tageblatt quoted its reporter covering the festival as saying a party atmosphere had turned to shock within minutes, and festivalgoers were seen crying.

Solingen is in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous state and bordering the Netherlands.

'It breaks my heart'

The city's mayor, Tim Kurzbach, said he would be praying for the victims.

In a Facebook post, he said "we in Solingen are all in shock. We all wanted to celebrate our city's anniversary together and now have dead and wounded to lament".

He added: "It breaks my heart that an attack on our city happened."

The German government has been aiming to toughen rules on knives that can be carried in public by reducing the length allowed.

In June, a 29-year-old policeman died after being stabbed in the city of Mannheim during an attack on a right-wing demonstration.
