BROKER'S COMMENTS
The Yachting World supplement of 1951 wrote that the 12 ton Gauntlet was one of the first boats to be built to the RORC rating – exactly what the originators of the Rule had in mind; fast and immensely seaworthy. SALUKI has now been in the same ownership for over 45 years – and in that time looked after by the Elephant Boatyard. She remains in impressive and original condition – exhibiting a charming patina that is virtually impossible to replicate in a recently restored boat.

Historical notes and commentary on design
The distinctive “Gauntlet” name merits mention of how it came to be. In short; HG May was approached by a potential client to design a boat suitable for cruising and offshore racing. On seeing the finished design plans for a 12 ton boat, the client apparently had second thoughts about accepting it and approached another designer for an alternative based on the same requirements – and in accepting it, rejected May’s design. May having invested time and effort was understandably annoyed but with faith in it; had the yard build him a boat to this his own design – and threw down the gauntlet in challenging his erstwhile client to a match race; one new boat against another. May’s confidence was fully vindicated by winning this contest comfortably and setting up the successful Gauntlet class against the current design concepts of his competitors. Launched in 1934, GAUNTLET was the first of the 12 tonners, after which the type has always been known. When she was designed very few, if any yachts had been specially built to the RORC rating and it was thought that it was this very type of yacht which the originators of the RORC rule had in mind when they produced it. In other words a comfortable cruising yacht with a fair turn of speed - although since then, a very different type of yacht has evolved. The 12-ton "Gauntlets" soon established themselves and sixteen were built in the five years before the 2nd World War, many of which have given a very good account of themselves in offshore racing; notably BRAMBLING AND GREENGAGE, to mention only two. In due course it was natural enough that some owners of these yachts would plump for a larger vessel and consequently some 14, 18 and even 25-tonners were built of the same type. The first of the 14-tonners; LOLLYPOPPETT, was built in 1939. This design was based essentially on the original 12 but she was given a waterline length of 32 ft 6 ins and a beam of 9 ft 7 ½ in. The displacement is fairly high, though less proportionately than 12-tonners. The aim was to produce a thoroughly comfortable and seaworthy cruising yacht, with rather more room than the original 12, in which the owner could take part in offshore races. The 14 Tonners went very well and in addition to SALUKI eight others were built after the War Even before 1939 the "Gauntlets" had been noticed as hard-weather boats but equally they have proved remarkably successful under a variety of conditions and many people have wondered why. Some designers are lucky in getting good owners and "Gauntlets" have generally been fortunate in this respect; for a yachtsman who buys a vessel of this kind usually intends to go in for serious cruising with an eye to offshore and passage racing as well. SALUKI the first 14-ton "Gauntlet” to be launched after World War II was built for Major W M Martineau MC vice- commodore of the Royal Lymington YC. Her second owner was Roger Leigh-Wood. The most striking feature of SALUKI’s lines is the fact that with only a little over 5 ft 10 in draft, the 14-ton "Gauntlet” has a good deal less than the maximum then allowed by the RORC Rule, which, at 16 per cent of the LWL plus 2 ft, works out about 7ft 3 in. The next outstanding characteristic is the narrow beam of only 9 ft 6 in on a water line length of 33ft. The sections reveal easy garboards and bilges with a deep hull which allows a low cabin sole with plenty of headroom. The hull has been given little bow overhang and the profile runs in a sweet continuous curve from the stem head to the heel, A short canoe stem matches the bow, which, unlike many yachts to-day, is free from snubbing. A deep narrow boat with short ends is economical to build as the minimum quantity of timber is needed so construction can thus err on the generous side without adding unduly to the weight of the hull. The added strength in its turn makes for confidence at sea and durability leading to low maintenance costs. The displacement of 12.2 tons is high – embracing a heavy keel and with 5 ½ tons of lead, Saluki's ballast ratio is slightly over 45 per cent. The secret of the "Gauntlet's" success probably lies in this heavy keel, which confers the stability which would otherwise be lacking in the narrow, easy sectioned, rather light drafted hull. Yachts of this type quickly take up an initial angle of heel and, as the weight of the keel comes into play, become increasingly stiff. The narrow beam helps to make a fast boat to windward but the steep buttocks, which cannot be avoided because of the depth of the hull amidships, tend to limit maximum speed, although the hull, on account of its other characteristics, would be very easily driven at medium speeds, Sail area can thus be kept on the moderate side. It is these factors which tend to make the" Gauntlets" perform well in most conditions and on most points of sailing, and so maintain a high average speed. The straight sheer combined with high freeboard gives the "Gauntlet" a slightly “boxy" look which takes a little getting used to. The above average freeboard might be a disadvantage in a vessel with long ends and a cocked up bow on account of the extra weight and windage where it is least wanted but the "Gauntlet," with her short overhangs, does not suffer in this respect.

History of Voronezh Oblast
The first people began to settle in the territory of the present Voronezh region in the Paleolithic age, about 30 thousand years ago. In the Iron Age, this region became part of Scythia. Then the Sarmatians came to replace the Scythians. It is assumed that they gave the name to the Don River.
In the early Middle Ages, the Alans, the descendants of the Sarmatians, moved on to a settled way of life, mastered the skills of urban culture and entered into a complex symbiosis with nomads (the Bulgars and the Khazars). In the 7th century, the steppe part of the region became the territory of the Khazar Kaganate.
In the 9th-10th centuries, the Slavs began to settle in the north of the region. Central and southern areas were controlled by nomadic tribes. In the first half of the 13th century, during the Mongol invasion, the ancient Russian settlements were destroyed, and Voronezh land for several centuries turned into a so-called “wild field” crossed by the main Tatar roads - Nogai and Kalmius roads.
In the 15th century, several districts up to the Khopyor River, the Vorona River and the mouth of the Voronezh River were part of the Ryazan principality, but the Russian settlements here were few in number. Between the Russian territory and the Tatar nomads lay a vast, devastated by nomadic raids, neutral buffer land.
More historical facts…
In 1521, the Ryazan principality became part of the Moscow state, which opened the way for the beginning of the Russian colonization of these territories. The Cossacks began to form from the Christian population of the region that assimilated certain elements of the culture of nomads.
In 1585, in place of the Cossack village, Voronezh was founded as a fortress of the Moscow state on the border of the Wild Field. For more than 50 years Voronezh was the only town on the territory of the present Voronezh region. Up to the 17th century, the Tatar raids on the Voronezh land continued.
In 1696, by decision and with the personal participation of Peter I, a shipyard was built on Voronezh land for the construction of the first Russian fleet - the foothold for the development of the Black Sea region. From here the Azov campaigns of Peter I began. The centers of Russian colonization in the east of the region were the towns of Borisoglebsk (1698) and Novokhopersk (1716).
In 1711, (after the loss of Azov), Voronezh became a provincial town, the administrative center of the Azov gubernia (province). In the 18th century, the development of the entire territory of the region began. In 1725, the province received the name of Voronezh.
Voronezh Governorate became one of the main bread baskets of the Russian Empire. In the 1860-1870s, railways passed through the territory of the region and connected Central Russia with South Ukraine, the North Caucasus and the Trans-Volga. The region’s economy remained largely agrarian.
In 1934, Voronezh Oblast was established. In 1937, Tambov Oblast was singled out of the Voronezh region. During the Second World War, it became the scene of fierce battles. The city of Voronezh was almost completely destroyed. In 1954, large western and northern territories were transferred to Belgorod and Lipetsk oblasts. In 1957, the boundaries of Voronezh Oblast took the current form.
In the mid-1960s, the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant was built, the Stavropol-Moscow gas pipeline passed through the territory of the region. Voronezh became a major center of the country’s military-industrial complex. In 1972, the Voronezh reservoir was created.

Berthon USA Review | 2022
By jennifer stewart , alan baines , bill rudkin and mark von drashek.
Year two of Covid continued to be good for the boat business overall, as people carried on buying in order to find refuge and solace from the sneezing masses. The yacht clubs reopened, many with vaccine requirements to set foot on the property, and regattas began. It was such a thrilling sight to see the first set of spinnakers coming down Narrangansett Bay; much missed in 2020.
Last year saw us deliver a record number of new yachts, starting with a Moody DS45 in May, here in Newport, then a beautiful blue Rustler 33’ that is now residing in Nantucket; followed by several more Moodys of all sizes and finally a Solaris 50’ to an ex-Swan client. This stunning blue yacht was the first Solaris we have sold and we have strong US interest for this brand going forward.
Like all manufacturers, supply chain issues caused late deliveries, but we are very fortunate to have a wonderful, understanding client base. Lead times have now stretched well into the future for new orders and there isn’t much to be had earlier than late 2023.
On the brokerage front , we had sales of a wide range of yachts including a Moody DS45 in Antigua, some Swans and Najads. On the powerboat side, 2 Aldens, a Sabre 48’ and a Marlow 62’. In a few instances, yachts sold for more than their asking prices, which would have been unheard of before Covid times. Inventory remains in short supply across our industry, so we would be thrilled to list your yacht.
Our charter business also continues to expand, with past clients contacting us to arrange large motor yacht charters in the Bahamas and beyond.
On the waterfront there continues to be a major shift in the ownership of the typical Marina, waterfront location or boatyard. There are a number of large, publicly traded companies investing heavily in the marina industry, with the biggest player being Safe Harbor. Safe Harbor has acquired well over 100 marinas and boatyards, primarily on the US East Coast. In Rhode Island, which is a small state, they now own ten facilities, including all the major ones. It is a fact that the waterfront values here have side-lined any prospect of the ‘Mom and Pop’ team of the old days buying or operating a marina. The capital needed is just too high. On the plus side, Safe Harbor is investing heavily in their properties and bringing in some much-needed upgrades. The operational teams for the most part remain, so there is that familiarity. At some point, no doubt, the shoe will drop in the form of higher costs for the boat owner. Given the boom in boat usage in the last two years, it is getting increasingly hard to find a berth or mooring in our area. Some owners have resorted to dry sailing their cruising boats as the only choice available.
The other issue that we are finding difficult is that the yacht insurance market is getting extremely tight, especially when it comes to getting American owners insured on yachts in Europe, or vice versa. The major European insurance company over here was Pantaenius but they pulled out of the US market a couple of years ago. So far, there are very few replacements, and those that do offer any coverage are very restrictive. You will read more of the insurance cover hiatus elsewhere in this publication.
The boat show circuit was also alive and well in 2021, with our office participating in the Newport & Annapolis Shows, featuring our newest Moody DS45 with a gorgeous American Cherry interior. The line to board our yacht was the longest in the show, which made for exhausted bustling brokers by the end of the day.
Our current team – Jennifer, Alan, Mark and Bill – are here to answer questions and provide years of experience and advice; in February we were joined by Peter Houghton [email protected] . British by birth, and after his initial career with the auctioneers Phillips in the UK, Peter emigrated to the US. We have known Peter for a long time through his long standing Captaincy of a Swan 68’, and then a Marlow 80’ for a long-term client of ours. Peter has just finished running a Swan 77’, and is looking forward to yacht broking ashore assisting new and old clients with their buying and selling needs.
All in all, we in Newport feel very optimistic about the state of the yachting market (subject to the extent of geopolitical ramifications in Eastern Europe and supply-chains worldwide), and are looking forward to another successful year following a good start.
