12M but it's out of reach! What only 2 or 3 left in the world...? Where can I get the data or find out what that Cat 8M's system is originally before I look see?

last year, The Wildlings; (but I left when the babe left! Cool girl!) The had a nice Sea Craft Cherokee 35 & it had only 1 & twin hydraulic drive system. Which I thought made sense? Does the smaller Catalacs have this system? I know the 12M is a twin system.

We had a Cherokee with the and twin hydraulic drives. Very inefficient and the were very expensive. Ended up pulling the setup and installing a central , much more satisfactory

engines. Another Catalac9M looked at in Delaware had the 20hpHonda outboard legged drive. Trying to track down Catalac's engine(s) / systems. Gee, I figured the single engine - twin hydraulics was okay. I've soooo much to learn! Thanks & fair wind

Les petits catamarans de croisière de moins de 9 mètres pour des navigations côtières

Le multicoque est de plus en plus plébiscité par les plaisanciers qui recherchent un bateau pour une grande croisière hauturière. En parallèle, et on y pense moins, un petit catamaran est aussi un excellent choix de voilier pour des navigations côtières de quelques jours, en famille.

Si le multicoque semble moins évident pour de la croisière côtière en famille, certains catamarans permettent de découvrir nos côtes de façon complètement différentes d’une navigation en monocoque. Ces petits catamarans , de moins de 9 mètres, permettent de découvrir la mer et nos côtes, en toute simplicité et au plus proche de la nature. Vous trouverez ci-dessous, une petite sélection des catamarans d’occasion, voire neufs, qui ont accompagné, et accompagnent toujours, de nombreux plaisanciers.

Quel catamaran pour de la croisière côtière ?

Bien évidemment, on ne va pas choisir le même catamaran pour faire une transat à 8 que pour naviguer le long des côtes bretonnes en famille, 4 ou 5. Je sais que nous croisons souvent, sur nos plans d’eau, de grands catamarans de 12-15m, mais je ne pense pas que cela soit l’idéal. En effet, naviguer sur un gros catamaran exige de bien préparer sa navigation pour gérer vos escales. Si vous pouvez mouiller partout, vous n’aurez pas accès à tous les petits ports de pêche. La largeur d’un catamaran de croisière impose d’avoir assez de place, et même dans les ports de plaisances les plus importants, en plein été, les catways des marinas sont vite occupés.

Il sera très compliqué, passé une certaine heure de trouver une place en bout de ponton pour amarrer votre multicoque. Et autant vous dire que si vous souhaitez vous abriter, pour la nuit, dans un port comme Le Palais, à belle Île ou Port Tudy, à Groix, vous risquez de dormir en dehors du port.

Enfin, soyons réalistes et raisonnables, avons-nous besoin d’une passerelle avec bain de soleil sur le roof, pouvant accueillir 10 personnes, et de 4 cabines doubles avec salle d’eau pour naviguer une semaine ? Je pense que la bonne taille de catamaran , pour naviguer en famille quelques semaines  et week-end par an, est de moins de 10 mètres. Le bateau reste raisonnable à manœuvrer et le budget d’entretien cohérent avec l’utilisation.

En petit multicoque, la croisière devient du raid ou du camping

Contrairement aux gros catamarans de 14 mètres , dont le volume est beaucoup plus important qu’en monocoque, sur les petits multicoques, c’est l’inverse. Un voilier de 8 mètres, comme l’Arcadia par exemple, va pouvoir offrir deux cabines doubles fermées, une salle d’eau fermée elle aussi et un carré pouvant accueillir 6 personnes confortablement. Sur un catamaran de 8 mètres , ce n’est plus du tout le cas.

En effet, sur un petit catamaran habitable , les coques ne sont pas assez hautes et larges pour installer de vastes cabines et des aménagements lourds. Dans le même temps, la passerelle, pour ne pas défigurer le bateau, doit rester basse, quand elle existe. De fait, le confort et le volume habitable sont donc réduits.

Ce qui pourrait paraître comme un inconvénient en croisière, pour certains est, en fait, un avantage pour les autres. La croisière, en petit catamaran, ne prend plus le même sens, ni le même état d’esprit. La croisière devient un raid , au plus proche de la nature. La croisière se transforme en camping côtier et navigations rapides , au plus proche des éléments.

Comme pour les petits voiliers, naviguer en petit multicoque n’est donc pas qu’un choix budgétaire. C’est surtout un choix de navigation et pratique de la voile.

Depuis les années 70, la production de petits catamarans habitables n’a pas été très conséquente. Pourtant certains multicoques sont des références dans la catégorie. Ces multicoques sont présents, de temps en temps, sur le marché de l’occasion. Mais il faut bien avouer que les catamarans à vendre , dans cette taille, ne sont pas nombreux. Ils demanderont, évidemment, une attention particulière sur l’entretien, dont je ne parlerai pas ici, j’en serai bien incapable. Faites appel à un professionnel.

Edel Cat 26, le camping côtier

L’ Edel cat 26 est le premier catamaran proposé par le chantier de Maurice Edel . Pour l’occasion, il s’était associé à un autre architecte naval de renom, en la personne de Sylvestre Langevin . 70 exemplaires ont été produits entre 1982 et 1985. L’Edel cat 26 répond exactement au programme que nous avons décrit plus haut. Il est bien construit, simple à naviguer et sécurisant en mer, à défaut d’être très performant.  

Dans le même temps, le bateau peut être démonté pour être transporté sur remorque. L’Edel Cat 26 propose 4 couchettes dans les 2 coques.

Rackam 26, le plus sportif

Rackam 26

Voilà un nom qui parlera aux passionnés de vitesse. Le Rackam 26 est un plan d’ Erik Lerouge . L’architecte est réputé pour ses bateaux qui ont leurs passionnés. Ce catamaran est sans doute un des plus performants dans sa taille. Il a été construit par le chantier breton Tregor Composites, en 2009.

Le bateau a été proposé en plusieurs versions, plus ou moins sportives. La version la plus sage dispose d’une passerelle proposant un carré et deux quatre couchettes simples. Le Rackam 26 est un bateau un peu technique dont les plus sportifs deviennent vite accros.

Punch 850, le catamaran selon Harlé

Le punch 850 est un plan Harlé construit, généralement, en contre-plaqué époxy. C’est au milieu des années 80 que l’architecte s’est intéressé aux catamarans. Le Punch 8.50 sera le plus petit d’une gamme comprenant un 10m et un 12m. Dessiné en collaboration avec Alain Mortain , en 1988, le Punch 8.50 sera le bateau personnel de Philippe Harlé pendant plusieurs années.

Ce catamaran est très marin, vif, rapide et facile à mener . Certaines unités possèdent une passerelle avec roof, mais il était dessiné sans. Chaque coque abrite 2 couchettes, une table à cartes pour l’une et un coin cuisine pour l’autre.

Edel Cat 28, l’ovni

Ce catamaran est le plus récent de la sélection. L’ Edel Cat 28 a été proposé, quelques années par le chantier ADN et les repreneurs de la marque Edel catamarans, mrs LELIEVRE et VIGNER. Ces derniers ont tenté de relancer la marque avec des catamarans atypiques. L’Edel cat 28 et le parfait multicoque de raid confortable. Il proposait deux couchettes doubles encadrant un carré dans la passerelle. Le bateau marchait bien et quelques unités ont été construites.

Maldive 32, le plus habitable

Quand on parle de petit catamaran habitable, le Maldive 32 ne peut que venir à l’esprit. Ce catamaran du chantier Fountaine Pajot , dessiné par le cabinet Joubert-Nivelt , est une référence dans sa catégorie. Il a été construit de 1987 à 1993, à plus de 100 exemplaires. Dans deux coques de 9 mètres, il propose deux cabines doubles à l’arrière de chaque coque. Dans le même temps, une salle d’eau est placée dans une des coques et un vaste carré dans sa passerelle. La passerelle a été équipée d’un roof astucieux, amovible qui permet d’avoir de la hauteur sous barrot, au mouillage.

En mer, le Maldive 32 est assez vivant malgré son poids, et reste toujours sécurisant.

Wharram Tiki 26 et 8m

Voilà un catamaran qui ne laisse pas insensible. L’architecte britannique James Wharram s’est fait un nom, dans les années 50, avec des catamarans reprenant le concept des bateaux polynésiens. Il est devenu une légende (vivante) de nombreux aventuriers. Le Tiki 8m   n’est ni le plus rapide, ni le plus logeable, mais c’est un bateau très marin et démontable pour être transporté.

Il existe en version amateur (Tiki 26) et de série (Tiki 8m).

Aventura 28

L’ aventura 28 est resté 17 ans au catalogue du chantier Aventura catamarans. Ce multicoque dessin par Jacques Fioleaum avait le mérite de relancer la mode de catamarans simples et rapides pour le camping côtier confortable. Le bateau était proposé avec une  capote et un taud sur la passerelle. A l’intérieur, les coques sont vraiment spacieuses et bien agencées. L’aventura 28 propose deux cabines doubles et un vrai carré.

Il existe d’autres modèles de catamarans de camping côtier ou de raid. Je ne les connais pas tous. On trouve beaucoup de modèles sur plan, notamment. Je n’ai pas citer, non plus, les catamarans anglais des années 70, Catalac , qui sont loin de l’esprit de ces lignes, je trouve. N’hésitez pas à compléter cette liste en commentaire.

Bonjour pour le manuel du propriétaire, j’ai eu un Challenge 30, Philippe Jonneau de chez Naval force 3 à la rochelle (c’est le constructeur également du Piana30 )m’en avait vendu1 pour une centaine d’euros il feras certainement de même pour le Piana

Large-sized catamarans are appealing due to their ample spacing and comfort. Therefore, a cruising family or couple looking to buy a boat is more likely to go for one of these. But are there small cruising catamarans that provide the performance, comfort, and amenities found in larger boats?  

The best catamarans under 30 feet (9.14 m) include the TomCat 6.2, Cadillac 27and 30, Gemini 30, Endeavour 30, and Maine Cat. These time-tested cruising cats are easy to handle, premium built, and are great for daytime sailing, overnight trips, and some even suitable for long-range sea passages. 

In this article, you’ll find a list of the best cruising catamarans below 30 feet (9.14 m). Keep reading to discover which catamarans make this list, what they have to offer, their pros and cons, and how much they cost.

Unlike most catamarans designed for racing purposes, the TomCat 6.2 is a medium-sized cat that’s well-suited to daytime cruising. It boasts high-quality construction, vacuum-bagged hulls, and a plywood-reinforced deck.

This 20 footer (6.09 m) comes with an 11-foot (3.35 m) beam and not only offers you safety and comfort but performance and versatility as well. 

This boat has a centrally placed outboard engine and two rudders that allow it to turn quickly and maneuver confidently into and out of marina slips. The 9.9 hp outboard propels it to speeds of around 8 knots (9.21 mph or 14.8 kph), though the boat has the potential to move faster if desired.

This simpler type of cat (just one engine as an example) also allows for cheaper and easier maintenance. Maintenance costs are something most people underestimate when getting a cat, if you want to get some real numbers from actual sailors then I suggest you read this article (How much does it cost to maintain a cat).

The boat sails with minimal heeling, comfortably accommodate 6-8 people, and you can sail it single-handed or take a crew. 

High and narrow hulls bearing arched bottoms allow for a low wetted surface. The hull design provides low resistance and a great deal of reserved buoyancy and also enables you to drive through closely spaced waves.

On most 20-footers (6.1 m), driving through waves generates a smooth but wet ride, but with the TomCat’s enclosed deck (link to parts names explained here ), you are safe and protected behind a windshield and the high bulwark.

The TomCat makes an excellent cruiser because it performs impressively well both under sail and power. It combines the performance of a modern sailing cat with the comfort, style, and convenience of a powerboat. It’s also trailerable since you can detach the hulls from the deck , winch up the deck on a trailer, and slide the hulls underneath.

But the best part is that it’s easy on the pocket, with the price ranging between $36,750 and $44,580 .

Catalac 30 (9M)

The Catalac brand consists of strongly built vessels that sport thick hulls, glass windows, narrow beams, and vertical transoms . Catalac 30 was the first vessel in this popular British cruising line designed by Tom Lack in the late 60s. The boat’s appeal was attributed to its safety, ample spacing, well-built interior, and load-carrying abilities.

These characteristics are extremely important on a safe catamaran, overloading your cat makes it sit lower in the water, increases drag, reduces handling and speed, there is stuff you should know about this (so that you can make an educated buy). Sporting 5 berths, a massive galley, plus a cockpit with a sheltered steering position, the 30-foot (9.1 m) Catalac makes an excellent floating home for a cruising family. It sails exceptionally well, doesn’t heel ( heeling explained here ), and delivers a reasonable motor-sailer level of performance.

Furthermore, the hulls provide adequate headroom, allowing those on board to move around comfortably, and there’s enough space on the deck for sunbathing.

The Catalac’s structure features solid fiberglass, chined hulls, and a staggered sheerline that allows easy aft access. With a modest rig that’s easy to handle, the Catalac can deliver top speeds of up to 12-14 knots (13.81-16.11 mph / 22.22-25.9 kph) under sail.

Given that the boat’s design focuses more on comfort than speed, this is a spectacular performance.  

Catalac 9M requires a skilled hand when turning into the wind as it is prone to blowing sideways. This is because the boat lacks ballast (which helps in keeping momentum during a tack) but also centerboards ( explained here ).

Back to the boat! This model came in two versions; the standard layout contained a 30-40hp outboard, while the second option had duo engines. The latter is easier to maneuver into a marina.

These cats retain their value pretty well. However, they might not be easy to come by since most owners find it challenging to get their hands on a larger boat with similar qualities and performance.

A Catalac 30 (9M) goes for between $33,000 and $55,000.

Catalac 27 (8M)

The Catalac 27 8M is a pocket cruiser that boasts a strong reputation for high quality, durability, and strength. Besides, the boat’s design makes it somewhat suitable for bluewater sailing ( understand why the small size is an offshore problem).

Built like a battleship, the boat contains solid fiberglass hulls. Additionally, it comes with double engines, a large cockpit fitted with cushions all around, and features standing headroom in each hull.

Like the Catalac 9M, this boat comes with two different layouts; a twin inboard diesel engine or an outboard engine. The twin-engine models can motor up to 1000 km (621 miles, read more on cat fuel consumption here ) without needing to refuel, while the 70 amps of charge plus water tanks (70 gallons / 265 liters) make these vessels remarkable coastal cruisers. 

Catalacs equipped with outboard engines sail faster since you can raise the engine during sailing and are also lighter. This helps to minimize drag . Catalac 8M sports a short but thick mast that helps make the boat stable.

Though small in size, this catamaran packs a lot of features in its small frame. It has a full-sized berth, a large galley that’s almost 8 feet (2.4 m) long, a quarter berth, head, and navigation station.

What’s more, the cockpit is as large as that of a 38 to 40-foot (11.5 to 12.1 m) cat.

The Endeavour 30 

The Endeavour 30 catamaran is a boat characterized by stability, ample deck space, and a spacious interior. It boasts fast cruising speeds under both sail and power.

The boat has mini keels and rudders plus symmetrical hulls separated by a hydra-cell. The latter is a center section with a characteristic V-shape. 

The boat’s vacuum-bagged construction helps enhance strength and stiffness while reducing weight. Furthermore, the interior has a fiberglass mold, providing extra strength and rigidity. With sufficient breeze, this vessel can deliver reasonable off-the-wind and doable upwind speeds.

As such, you can expect to attain speeds of about ~10 knots (11.51 mph or 18.5 kph) on power reaches. Below is a video showing a panoramic tour of the Endeavour 30:

This vessel has the internal capacity of a 40-foot (12.1 m) monohull. And you can tell this from the unique layout merging the cabin and cockpit with wide doors to the numerous features packed into this 30-foot (9.14 m) vessel.

It has a spacious salon, an enormous galley, two queen berth staterooms with plenty of storage space, a head with separate showers, and a sizable U-shaped dinette.

The Geminis by Tony Smith were the United States’s first production cruising cats. Today, these vessels remain the most appealing American-built cruising catamarans. Built between 1981 and 1990, the Gemini 30 does not have a contemporary design, but it works remarkably well for cruisers desiring generous living space in a small affordable sailboat.

At only 14 feet (4.2 m) across, Gemini cats are somewhat narrow. But this mean s they can easily fit into most of the regular marina berths.

Besides, the boats still contain enough interior space for a queen-size double berth and two smaller doubles housed in separate guest rooms.

There’s also a modest but serviceable saloon with duo settees and a collapsible table that can transform into an additional double berth.

For the Gemini 30, this translates to a cruising cat with standing headroom that can comfortably accommodate 3 couples in private cabins or a family with small children. A good-sized galley, a spacious head with a shower, nav desk, and a large comfy cockpit make up the Gemini 30’s cruising palace.

While not that fast, the Gemini 30 will easily outsail the Endeavor 30 discussed above. Its daggerboards (which are explained in detail here ) can point well, and if you keep it light, it can do 7-8 knots (12.9-14.8 km/hr) under sail.

Besides, raising the daggerboards reduces the wetted surface area, and increases the speed downwind.

The Gemini 30 tends to pound and hobbyhorse a little when sailing in choppy waters – particularly when overloaded (more on load carrying capabilities in this article ), but the deep pivoting daggerboards provide stability and lift underwater.

Furthermore, the Gemini’s retractable rudders enable it to venture into shallow waters.

This is a very popular cruising cat that’ll give you a lot of bang for your bucks.

Maine Cat 30 

The Maine Cat 30 combines premium quality construction materials with the most advanced building techniques to create a lightweight vessel capable of handling most offshore conditions. What’s more, this boat can remain trouble-free for years on end with little effort.

If you are in the market for a simple liveaboard cruiser that you can use for a short weekend getaway or a cruising voyage, this is it.

The boat has a sizable primary stateroom berth with ample overhead space and a dresser fitted with a hanging storage cabinet. The enormous head includes a toilet, sink, 20-gallon (75.71 L) holding tank, vanity, and a pressurized shower.

Covering the open bridgedeck is a permanent hardtop. This spacious bridgedeck can hold quite a crowd and comes with a convertible dinette that turns into an extra berth. If need be, you can even enclose the entire space using acrylic windows or screens. Gabo

The 360-degree visibility from the cockpit allows the captain plus the crew a panoramic view, and all sail controls go back to the cockpit, which is very useful if wanting to sail single-handedly.

I believe that most boats should be set up in this way since sooner or later you might be in a situation where there is only one person to handle the controls, such as in an emergency. But more on that in another article ( Link ).

The Maine Cat 30 is a classic boat that delivers on high-performance multihull sailing. Designed to offer much better performance than catamarans bearing tall and heavy bridge decks, this cat weighs less and suffers less windage thanks to the acrylic windows.

The boat’s interior layout allows for easy cleaning as surfaces sport a smooth gel coat and satin-finished cherry trim. The solid but lightweight furniture bears the same Core-Cell foam core employed on the hull, deck, and hardtop. Plus, there’s ample storage for all your sailing equipment, cleaning supplies, and provisions.

A Maine Cat 30 can cost up to $110,000.

Heavenly Twins 27

The overall design of this well-equipped catamaran makes it a superb pocket cruiser.

Heavenly Twins 27 manages to fit not one but two coachroofs on hulls that are only 27 feet (8.20 m) long. Canoe sterns and a central cockpit separating the duo coachroofs form the boat’s other prominent features. 

Famous for their excellent build quality, medium-depth draft, and narrow beams, Heavenly Twins 27 appeals to a wide range of boating enthusiasts.

These include solo sailors, weekend sailors, cruising families, circumnavigators, beginner sailors, and experienced liveaboards such as this famous Youtube channel “Kittiwake”.

The vessels house double cabins in the hulls while the forward starboard contains the heads and, to port, the galley. You can easily access the bar from the well-protected cockpit while the Comfordesk accommodation converts into a double dock. 

A stoop through allows access from below-deck to the aft compartment without going through the cockpit. There’s ample storage space throughout the boat, plus you can section off the large stateroom into smaller double compartments if desired.

The price range for this boat is $ 20,098 to $24,193. (I believe that kittiwake is for sale too)

The last cruising catamaran on my list is the Aquilon 26 . This French-built cruising vessel is light in weight and trailerable, which means you can disassemble it in a few hours or transport it as-is.

Designing a boat that is possible to disassemble usually means that it is structurally less strong, which by no means is a problem during coastal sailing but the Aquilon 26 is mostly attractive to sailors who prefer inland lake sailing. It’s also suitable for beginner sailors.

Although there are no real “beginner cats” there are specs to consider if you are a beginner with catamarans, most of them I have listed in another article ( here ). Gabo

This 26-footer (7.92 m) has the potential for good speed though its layout is anything but conventional- which forms part of its appeal.

The cockpit works as the saloon, and a full bimini protects the crew from lousy weather. The starboard hull contains a dinette and galley, and the port has a double berth stateroom. The windows are quite unusual, but they provide lots of light, remarkably enhancing interior visibility.

Aquilon 26 can deliver an average cruising speed of 10knots (11.51 mph or 18.5 kph).

On a beam reach, you can expect around 25 knots (28.77 mph or 46.3 kph) with an adequate breeze ( I have never sailed at 25knots but researching this boat supposedly it is possible).

You can get this boat for under $50,000.

What Makes Small Cruising Cats Attractive?

Small cruising cats are ideal for sailing along the coast. But that’s not all. Under capable hands, properly fitted smaller cats can also deliver spectacular offshore passages similar to their larger counterpart (Heres a list of full-sized bluewater cats).

They can operate over long cruise ranges, cross oceans , and circumnavigate the globe . Smaller cats are also suitable for day sailing, overnight trips, and coastal or inland voyages. 

For most sailors, comfort on board is crucial, so they’ll look for a vessel that guarantees a comfortable cruising experience. The good thing is that smaller vessels provide almost the same qualities and amenities that bigger vessels offer. Plus, you can do quite a bit with the available space, especially if it’s well laid out.  

You’ll find that most 30-footer (9.14 m) or more miniature cruising cats comprise a galley, head, bunks, navigation and entertainment electronics, and refrigeration.

Sailors usually talk about these benefits of smaller cats:

  • They’re less expensive. Large boats are costly to buy. They also cost more to hire, maintain, and dock. You can buy a small-sized boat at a much lower price, and parts tend to cost less too. Besides, you get to use smaller sails, winches, and lighter lines than those applicable on a larger boat. And since marine services such as moorings and haul-outs get billed via boat length, a smaller cat makes sailing more affordable.
  • They boast superior builds. Most cruising boats under 30 feet (9.14 m) feature designs that are 30+ years old. In those days, weather forecasts were hard to come by and not as accurate, so boat builders used hulls with thicker fiberglass than the type found in today’s builds. Furthermore, everything in the boat, including rigs, rudders, hulls, keels and decks, was designed to withstand strong winds and high waves. 
  • They have simpler systems. This means less time spent fixing and maintaining your boat. For instance, most small cruising cats often lack water-makers, hot water systems, or electric anchor windlasses. 
  • They’re easier to handle. Smaller cats are simpler to sail than larger cats. It’s also easier to sail one single-handed or with a small crew.

The Disadvantages of Smaller Cruising Cats

Below are some of the most discussed downsides of small cats:

  • They have limited living space, storage, and amenities.
  • Though they don’t heel much, they are less comfortable than larger boats since they get tossed around much more easily in big ocean swells.
  • It’s not easy to accommodate crew for extended periods; hence there are fewer hands to share work.
  • They are slower and take longer to get to their destination.

Though fewer are on the cruising trails than their larger counterparts, small catamarans make ideal cruisers because they are simple, seaworthy, and pocket-friendly.

When choosing the best cat for your needs, focus on quality rather than size. A well-planned 30-footer (9.14 m) is reliable and provides ample space for your accommodation, dining, and relaxation, plus a storage room for provisions and any spare parts you might need.

Les moteurs IPS, qui équipent certains catamarans à moteur Fountaine Pajot sont conçus pour offrir une meilleure efficacité énergétique, ce qui peut se traduire par une économie de carburant par rapport à d’autres systèmes de propulsion. La conception globale des moteurs IPS vise à optimiser les performances du bateau en termes de vitesse , de maniabilité et d’économie de carburant. Grâce à son architecture à deux flotteurs et une nacelle centrale suspendue, les masses sont divisées par deux et mieux réparties. La finesse des coques diminue la poussée d’Archimède et demande une énergie bien moindre pour déplacer la carène sur l’eau. Une consommation deux fois moindre que celle d’un monocoque en résulte et augmente l’autonomie des catamarans à moteur pour les grandes traversées et les longs séjours au mouillage. Test Aiper Surfer S1 : un robot piscine qui nettoie à l'infini, ou presque

Un robot skimmer, pour quoi faire ? C'est une question légitime qu'on a pu se poser lorsqu'on a appris que c'était LA meilleure vente de la marque de robots de piscine Aiper pour 2024, à un point tel qu'ils n'arrivaient pas toujours à répondre à la demande…

Aiper a débarqué en Europe en 2023 sur le marché des robots nettoyeurs de piscine avec une stratégie agressive, puisque la marque chinoise propose des robots bien équipés beaucoup moins chers que la concurrence. Mais elle innove aussi avec le premier robot skimmer, le Surfer S1.

Déballage Aiper Surfer S1 : un robot d'un nouveau genre

Quand on a testé un Scuba S1 Pro , le nouveau robot d'Aiper fait plutôt poids plume : un petit catamaran plat et couvert de panneaux solaires. Ces panneaux sont coulissants, à l'appui sur une grosse gâchette, et dévoilent un bac de récupération facile à nettoyer, puisqu'il s'ouvre très largement par son fond. C'est là une bonne surprise. On comprend d'ailleurs comment fonctionne le robot à la simple vue de son bac, puisque celui-ci est équipé d'une sorte de roue à aubes sur toute sa largeur, qui entraîne les débris à l'intérieur du bac sans les laisser s'échapper.

Sinon, ce robot est particulièrement simple, avec seulement deux boutons : un bouton « Power » permettant le passage entre veille et extinction complète, et un bouton lumineux  « Play » (allumé, le robot est en veille, éteint, le robot est à l'arrêt) permettant de lancer et d'arrêter le nettoyage.

Ce détail pratique prouve qu'Aiper a bien réfléchi à l'usage de son produit : si vous avez un bassin de type lagon ou des marches d'escalier très peu immergées, le robot pourrait s'y échouer. Il suffit alors de déployer deux petites butées télescopiques à l'avant des flotteurs pour rendre l'échouage impossible.

Aiper Surfer S1 : et vogue le robot

C'est parti, on pose ce robot catamaran sur l'eau pour voir de quoi il est capable.

Et tout de suite, une première déconvenue : si vous avez un thermomètre flottant, un matelas, un ballon ou d'autres jouets qui flottent sur votre piscine, il faudra penser à faire le ménage avant d'allumer l'engin, car même s'il est doté de capteurs à ultrasons, il ne détectera pas ces objets, même un gros matelas flottant (que ce soit un matelas gonflable ou un matelas rempli de billes de polystyrène comme un Fatboy), ce qui aura pour conséquence de le bloquer, réduisant à néant son efficacité.

Une fois le ménage fait, on peut relancer le nettoyage, et là, c'est parti… pour looooongtemps! En effet, ce qui est vraiment génial avec ce robot, c'est que ses capteurs solaires font vraiment le boulot. Si vous faites comme nous, c'est-à-dire que vous ne le faites pas travailler la nuit et que vous le laissez en veille au soleil pendant les sessions de baignade, vous ne devriez jamais avoir besoin d'utiliser son chargeur.

Pour notre part, c'est simple, nous ne savons même plus où nous avons mis ce chargeur, puisque le robot n'est presque jamais descendu sous les 80 % de charge. C'est à notre connaissance le premier robot connecté qui peut fonctionner « à l'infini » (il faudra tout de même vider régulièrement son bac), et c'est une vraie prouesse quand on considère que ce petit robot dispose de 3 moteurs (deux de propulsion et un petit moteur pour faire tourner la roue à aubes du bac de récupération) et qu'il est connecté en continu en Wi-Fi.

Les capteurs à ultrasons du Surfer S1 lui permettent de « virer de bord » (ou plus simplement : de tourner) avant de toucher les parois de la piscine. Si ça marche la plupart du temps, ce n'est pas non plus parfait, puisqu'il a fréquemment eu du mal à détecter les bords et s'est souvent retrouvé à les percuter de façon frontale. Cela est arrivé sur un bord en pointe saillante que les capteurs n'ont pas dû détecter, mais c'est aussi arrivé de façon plus étrange sur des bords plats.

Dernière déconvenue qui est arrivée de temps en temps à notre Surfer de test : il s'est retrouvé bloqué par le skimmer de la piscine, aspiré sur un côté, et il lui était impossible de se dégager avec ses moteurs.

Il faudra donc faire le ménage des objets flottants sur l'eau et jeter un œil de temps en temps pour être sûr que le robot n'est pas bloqué, mais si vous prenez ces précautions, la surface de votre piscine devrait être impeccable, sans avoir besoin de passer un coup d'épuisette avant de profiter de la baignade. Un petit luxe qui se paie un peu cher, mais qui semble ravir les foules.

Le Surfer S1 s'entend, c'est dommage, et il faudra s'y habituer, mais c'est un bruit qui n'est pas trop désagréable et au niveau assez réduit, une sorte de « tac tac tac » émis par le moteur de la roue à aubes.

Enfin, à la sortie de l'eau, il faudra faire attention à ne pas faire reculer le robot éteint et à bien le sortir en inclinant sa partie avant vers le haut, sinon il sera très facile de rejeter dans la piscine les déchets flottants dans son bac.

Aiper Surfer S1 : une application très pratique

L'application est utile et bien pensée. En effet, le Surfer S1 étant connecté en Wi-Fi, vous pouvez le commander à distance. Pratique si vous le laissez en permanence flotter dans la piscine en veille, il suffira de lancer le nettoyage de surface avant de quitter le travail pour retrouver votre piscine prête à la baignade à votre arrivée.

Nous aurions cependant apprécié une fonction planning pour automatiser ce fonctionnement selon les jours de la semaine, mais avec un peu d'espoir, elle pourrait être ajoutée dans le futur.

Autre utilité de l'app : elle vous permet de contrôler à distance la température de votre piscine, car le Surfer S1 est doté d'un thermomètre. Comme nous l'avons dit, il faut que rien ne traîne dans l'eau si vous souhaitez que ce robot de surface soit efficace, donc si vous avez un thermomètre flottant connecté, le Surfer S1 prendra sa place.

Enfin, une fonction plus ou moins pratique, mais très ludique : il est possible de piloter le robot avec l'app grâce à une croix directionnelle.

Avec le surfer S1, Aiper a lancé une nouvelle catégorie de robots, les robots skimmers. Et ce premier produit est très convaincant. Simple, pilotable à distance, mais surtout doté d'une autonomie virtuellement infinie grâce à ses panneaux solaires, il saura vous débarrasser des débris flottants à la surface de votre piscine pour retrouver une surface dégagée avant chaque baignade, ce qui vous permettra de remiser votre épuisette au placard.

Cependant, tout n'est pas parfait… Si vous voulez profiter des talents du Surfer S1, vous ne devrez rien laisser traîner dans votre piscine. En effet, ses capteurs ne détectent pas les jouets ou les matelas flottants, quand ce n'est pas tout simplement les bords de la piscine qu'ils ont du mal à détecter. Et dans ce cas, le Surfer S1 pourrait se retrouver coincé à l'entrée de votre skimmer, ce qui le rendrait complètement contre-productif !

Côté prix, rappelons que vous pouvez trouver des appareils de nettoyage de la surface de l'eau (hydraulique ou à pression, certes) pour des prix bien plus accessibles. Quel prix à votre confort ? C'est à vous de nous le dire.

History of Yekaterinburg

Foundation of yekaterinburg.

The territory along the Iset River, which served as a convenient transport route from the Ural Mountains deep into Siberia, has long attracted settlers. The oldest of the currently discovered settlements on the territory of present Yekaterinburg was located next to the Palkinsky Stone Tents rock massif and dates back to the 6th millennium BC.

From the 7th-3rd centuries BC, ancient metallurgists who mastered the smelting of copper lived in this settlement. Copper figures of birds, animals, people, arrowheads, various household items were found here. Later they learned how to make iron products. All discovered settlements were destroyed as a result of fires, possibly during raids of the conquerors.

The territory occupied by present Yekaterinburg became part of Russia in the middle of the 17th century. At that time, it had practically no permanent population. The first Russian settlements were founded in the second half of the 17th century. At the beginning of the 18th century, the first ironworks were built here.

In the spring of 1723, by decree of Emperor Peter I, the construction of the largest iron-making plant in Russia began on the banks of the Iset River. Construction began on the initiative of Vasily Tatishchev (a prominent Russian statesman). He was supported by Georg Wilhelm de Gennin (a German-born Russian military officer and engineer), on the initiative of which the fortress plant was named Yekaterinburg in honor of Empress Catherine I (Yekaterina in Russian), the wife of Peter I.

More Historical Facts…

The historic birthday of Yekaterinburg is November 18, 1723. On this day, a test run of the plant equipment was carried out. Its main products included iron, cast iron, and copper. In 1725, the Yekaterinburg Mint began production on the territory of the fortress and became the main producer of copper coins in the Russian Empire. Until 1876, it produced about 80% of the country’s copper coins. In the 1720s, the population of Yekaterinburg was about 4,000 people.

In the middle of the 18th century, the first ore gold in Russia was discovered in this region, which was the beginning of the gold industry in the country. As a result, Yekaterinburg became the center of a whole system of densely located plants and began to develop as the capital of the mining region, which spread on both sides of the Ural Range.

In 1781, Catherine II granted Yekaterinburg the status of a county town in the Perm Governorate. The population of the town was about 8,000 people. In 1783, the town received a coat of arms depicting an ore mine and a melting furnace, which symbolized its mining and metallurgical industries (similar images are depicted on the current coat of arms and flag of Yekaterinburg).

In 1783, the Great Siberian Road was opened - the main road of the Russian Empire that passed through Yekaterinburg. It served as an impetus for the transformation of Yekaterinburg into a transport hub and a center of trade. Thus, Yekaterinburg, among other towns of the Perm Governorate, became the key town for the development of the boundless and rich Siberia, the “window to Asia”, just as St. Petersburg was the Russian “window to Europe.”

In 1808, the Yekaterinburg plant was closed, and the history of the town entered a new stage related to the development of a large regional center with a diversified economy. At the beginning of the 19th century, the gold mining industry flourished. At the same time, deposits of emeralds, sapphires, aquamarines, diamonds, and other precious, semiprecious, and ornamental stones were discovered in the Urals. Yekaterinburg became one of the world centers for their artistic processing.

After the abolition of serfdom in 1861, the mining industry of the Urals experienced a severe crisis, a number of plants were closed. In 1878, the first railway was constructed across the Urals and connected Yekaterinburg with Perm. In 1888, the Yekaterinburg-Tyumen railway was built, and in 1897 - the railway to Chelyabinsk, which provided access to the Trans-Siberian Railway. Yekaterinburg became a major railway junction, which contributed to the development of the local food industry, especially flour milling. In 1913, the population of Yekaterinburg was about 69,000 people.

Yekaterinburg in the first years of Soviet power

On November 8, 1917, Soviet power was established in Yekaterinburg. On April 30, 1918, the last Russian emperor Nicholas II and his family members with a few servants were transported from Tobolsk to Yekaterinburg. They were placed in the “House of Special Purpose”, the mansion of engineer Nikolai Ipatiev requisitioned for this purpose, and transferred under the supervision and responsibility of the Ural Regional Soviet.

In July 1918, units of the White Siberian army approached Yekaterinburg, under this pretext the leadership of the Ural Regional Soviet decided to shoot the imperial family. On the night of July 16-17, 1918, it was done in the basement of the Ipatiev House.

10 days later, units of the Czechoslovak Legion entered Yekaterinburg. Over the next 12 months, it was under the control of anti-Bolshevik forces. On July 14, 1919, the Red Army reoccupied the city. Soviet authorities and the Yekaterinburg Province with a center in Yekaterinburg were restored. In 1920, the population of the city was about 94,400 people.

The political center of the Urals moved from Perm to Yekaterinburg. In 1923, Yekaterinburg became the administrative center of the vast Ural Oblast, which in size exceeded the territory of the present Ural Federal District of Russia. In 1924, the city council decided to rename the capital of the new region to Sverdlovsk - in honor of Yakov Sverdlov, a Bolshevik party administrator and chairman of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee.

Sverdlovsk - a Soviet industrial giant

During the years of Stalin’s industrialization, Sverdlovsk was turned into a powerful industrial center. The old factories were reconstructed and new large factories were built, including giant machine-building and metal processing plants. In 1933, the construction of the future flagship of Soviet engineering (Uralmash) was completed. The population of Sverdlovsk grew by more than 3 times, and it became one of the fastest growing cities in the USSR.

January 17, 1934, Ural Oblast was divided into three regions - Sverdlovsk Oblast with a center in Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk Oblast with a center in Chelyabinsk, and Ob-Irtysh Oblast with a center in Tyumen. By the end of the 1930s, there were 140 industrial enterprises, 25 research institutes, 12 higher educational institutions in Sverdlovsk. In 1939, the population of the city was about 425,500 people.

Along with other Ural cities, Sverdlovsk made a significant contribution to the victory of the USSR in the Second World War. In total, more than 100,000 residents of the city joined the Red Army. 41,772 people didn’t return from the war: 21,397 - killed in battles, 4,778 - died from wounds in hospitals, 15,491 - went missing, 106 - died in prisoner of war camps.

Sverdlovsk became the largest evacuation point, more than 50 large and medium enterprises from the western regions of Russia and Ukraine were evacuated here. During the war years, industrial production in Sverdlovsk grew 7 times.

After the war, this city became the largest center for engineering and metalworking in Russia. During the Cold War, Sverdlovsk, as a key center of the defense industry, was practically closed to foreigners. In 1960, in the sky above the city, Soviet air defense shot down the U-2 spy plane of the US manned by Francis Gary Powers.

On January 23, 1967, a millionth resident was born in the city and Sverdlovsk became one of the first Russian cities with a population of more than 1 million people. In 1979, Sverdlovsk was included in the list of historical cities of Russia.

On October 4, 1988, a serious accident occurred at the Sverdlovsk railway station. The train carrying almost 100 tons of explosives rolled downhill and crashed into a coal freight train. An explosion occurred, aggravated by the proximity of a large warehouse of fuels and lubricants. The funnel at the site of the explosion had a diameter of 40-60 meters and a depth of 8 meters, the shock wave spread 10-15 kilometers. The explosion killed 4 people at the station and injured more than 500 people. About 600 houses were severely damaged.

Yekaterinburg - one of the largest cities of the Russian Federation

On September 4, 1991, the Sverdlovsk City Council of People’s Deputies decided to return the city its original name - Yekaterinburg. The population of the city was about 1,375,000 people. The restrictions on foreign visitors to the city were also lifted, and soon the first consulate general was opened here - the United States of America (in 1994).

The transition to a market economy led to a reduction in production at industrial enterprises, inert giant plant found themselves in a particularly difficult situation. In 1991, the construction of the television tower was stopped. The city was flooded with chaotic small retail trade in temporary pavilions and markets. These years were the heyday of organized crime, Yekaterinburg became one of the “criminal capitals” of Russia. The economic situation began to improve by the end of the 1990s.

In 2000-2003, the Church on Blood in Honour of All Saints Resplendent in the Russian Land was built on the site of the Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg. In 2008-2009, the Koltsovo Airport was reconstructed. In June 15-17, 2009, SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization) and BRIC (Brasilia, Russia, India, China) summits were held in Yekaterinburg.

In 2015, the Presidential Center of Boris Yeltsin, the first president of Russia, was opened in Yekaterinburg. On March 24, 2018, the abandoned unfinished television tower was dismantled. It was the tallest building in the city (almost 240 meters) and became one of the symbols of Yekaterinburg. 4 matches of FIFA World Cup 2018 were played in Yekaterinburg.

Today, Yekaterinburg is the largest center of attraction not only of Sverdlovsk Oblast, but also of the surrounding regions. By some socio-economic indicators, this city ranks third in Russia, after Moscow and St. Petersburg. Yekaterinburg is located in the floodplain of the Iset River on the eastern slope of the Middle Urals in Asia, near its border with Europe, about 1,800 km east of Moscow. Since the Ural Mountains are very old, there are no significant hills in the city.

This relief was a favorable condition for the construction of the main transport routes from Central Russia to Siberia (the Siberian Route and the Trans-Siberian Railway) through Yekaterinburg. As a result, it has become one of the most strategically important centers of Russia, which still provides a link between the European and Asian parts of the country.

Yekaterinburg is located in the border zone of temperate continental and continental climates. It is characterized by a sharp variability in weather conditions with well-defined seasons. The Ural Mountains, despite their low height, block the way to the masses of air coming from the west from the European part of Russia.

As a result, the Middle Urals is open to the invasion of cold Arctic air and continental air of the West Siberian Plain. At the same time, warm air masses of the Caspian Sea and the deserts of Central Asia can freely enter this territory from the south.

That is why the city is characterized by sharp temperature fluctuations and the formation of weather anomalies: in winter from severe frosts to thaws and rains, in summer from heat above plus 35 degrees Celsius to frosts. The average temperature in January is minus 12.6 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 19 degrees Celsius.

The city has a rather unfavorable environmental situation due to air pollution. In 2016, Yekaterinburg was included in the list of Russian cities with the worst environmental situation by this indicator. Car emissions account for more than 90% of all pollution.

Yekaterinburg ranks third in Russia (after Moscow and St. Petersburg) in the number of diplomatic missions, while their consular districts extend far beyond Sverdlovsk Oblast, and serve other regions of the Urals, Siberia, and the Volga region.

In terms of economy, Yekaterinburg also ranks third in the country. It is one of the largest financial and business centers of Russia. The main branches of production: metallurgical production and metalworking, food production, production of electrical equipment, electronic and optical equipment, production of vehicles, production of machinery and equipment, chemical production.

Almost all types of urban public transport are presented in Yekaterinburg: buses, trolleybuses, trams, subways, taxis. There are about 50 different museums in Yekaterinburg. One of the world’s largest collections of constructivist architectural monuments has been preserved here. White Tower (1929-1931) - a former water tower 29 meters high located at a certain distance from the center of Yekaterinburg, an architectural monument of Constructivism. Today, it is used as a cultural site. Bakinskikh Komissarov Street, 2?.

Keyboard Monument - a contemporary art object made on a scale of 30:1 in 2005. This 16x4 meter concrete keyboard consists of 104 keys spaced 15 cm apart. From here the famous tourist route “Red Line” begins (a self-guided tour of the historic city center). The monument is located on the embankment of the Iset River next to the House of the Merchant Chuvildin (Gorkogo Street, 14A).

This page is fairly technical … but in 2005 the Catalac 8M was my new boat and calculating performance characteristics satisfied my curiousity. 

Essentially this page displays crucial data which is used to calculated max speed and stability for the Catalac 8M / 9M (same hulls). The data can be used in the context of hull design or racing handicaps. There’s no way a Catalac 8M (or most cruising catamarans for that matter) can be mistaken as a racer.

Lwl/Bh7.82Waterline length to the beam ratio of a single hull of a catamaran or the center hull of a trimaran. 16:1 High Performance Racer; 12:1 Racer; 10:1 Racer/Cruiser; 8:1 Cruiser. The narrower hull will be faster, . The fuller hull will be slower, but carry more payload for a given boat length.
PI-C0.64PI-C : A Classic indicator of a measure of relative speed potential of a boat. It takes into consideration Sail Area, Displacement and boat Length at Waterline. The higher the number, the faster speed potential for the boat. PI-C = 0.5*SQRT( (Lwl*SA)/(Disp*2240) )
BSpd7.74 KnotsBase Speed is an empirically-derived indicator of the speed a given boat could average over a 24 hour period under a variety of conditions. It can be used to compare speed potential of one or more boats and has been used for handicapping boat races involving a variety of boat types. “Base Speed: A Simple Measure for Estimating Multihull Performance”, Multihull International,No. 225,(APR’89) pp.108-110. Base Speed=1.7*(Lwl^0.5)*(SA^0.352)/((Displacement*2240)^.253)
BN1.09The Bruce Number is a power-to-weight indicator for relative speed potential for comparing two or more boats. It takes into consideration the sail area of the main and jib, no overlapping sails, and the displacement. Chris White, “The Cruising Multihull”; 1997 International Marine, Camden, Maine, states that a boat with a BN of less than 1.3 will be slow in light winds, and a boat with a BN of 1.6 is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, “Multihulls for Cruising and Racing, 1991, International Marine, Camden, Maine, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast boats. Bruce No. = SA^0.5/(Displacement*2240)^.333
SA/D18.82The SA/D ratio is similar to the Bruce Number, giving a power-to-weight ratio type figure for comparing two or more boats. Higher numbers indicate faster boats for a given length. However in this ratio, unlike the Bruce Number, main and genoa or any combination of sail area can be used. When comparing any two boats one should ensure that both the SA and displacement, including planned payload, are equivalent, to get a realistic comparison. SA/D = SA/(Displacement*2240/64)^.666666667
Texel146The Texel Rating provides handicap numbers for widely varying boats sailing together in a race. The formula is essentially the inverse of the Base Speed formula with constants applied to make the numbers useful. The Texel Rating permits the calculation of time to sail a given distance. Thus, a boat with a higher Texel Rating can be expected to take longer from start to finish of a race than one with a lower TR. TR = 100/(0.99*(Lwl)^0.3*(SA)^0.4/(D)^0.3)*K in which K is a correction for catamarans vs. trimarans, based on the equation, K = 1/(0.19*SA^0.4/D^0.36+0.91). If K is greater than 1, use the calculated value. If K is less than one, use the value 1. K is always one for trimarans.
SI-CM2.44This figure is an indicator of the resistance of a boat to sideways capsize for comparison with other boats. This formula only considers static Forces, not dynamic forces such as hull shape, wind, and waves. Therefore it should be considered a “Figure of Merit”. “Theory and Statistics for Cruising Multihulls” by Calvin Markwood, Multihulls Magazine, Vol. 23, No. 2, (MAR/APR 1997), pp. 51-59 Article. SSpd22.34 KnotsThe Stability Speed  figure is an indicator of the wind speed at which the windward hull of a catamaran, or the main hull of a trimaran, will begin to lift. This formula only considers static Forces, not dynamic forces such as hull shape, wind, and waves.   1. Catalac 8M Information

    The Catalac 8M will deliver 6 knots in 10-12 knots of wind, and maintain speed right up to 35 degrees apparent. Boats with outboard engines are slightly quicker than boats with twin diesel engines due to underwater drag of the diesel engine running gear. The Catalac 8M also has high bridge deck clearance for it's size.

  2. Catalac 8M propulsion system

    Re: Catalac 8M propulsion system. I believe the 8m came with either 2 small diesels or a central outboard. We had a Cherokee with the single diesel and twin hydraulic drives. Very inefficient and the parts were very expensive. Ended up pulling the setup and installing a single central outboard, much more satisfactory. 24-06-2024, 17:44.

  3. CATALAC 8M

    LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length. That said, LOA may still mean LOD if the builder is being honest and using accepted industry standards developed by groups like the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).
