How Much is a Yacht Club Membership? 3 Common Price Ranges

The cost of an annual yacht club membership can vary widely depending on several factors, such as the location of the club, the amenities offered, the exclusivity of the membership, and the size of the yacht being accommodated. We’ve compiled a set of guidelines below to help you estimate what you can expect to pay for an annual yacht club membership.

Local or Less Exclusive Yacht Clubs

Afternoon party at a local yacht club

These clubs might offer basic amenities such as docking facilities, a clubhouse, and some social events. Annual fees can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Membership fees could be as low as $500 to $2,000 per year.

Mid-Range Yacht Clubs:

Mid-range yacht club facility

These clubs may offer more extensive amenities, including high-quality dining facilities, repair and maintenance services, fitness centers, and a busy calendar of social and boating activities. Annual fees for these clubs can range from $3,000 to $10,000 or more.

Prestigious or Exclusive Yacht Clubs

The most exclusive yacht clubs, often located in prime locations with extensive facilities and services, can have annual membership fees that are significantly higher. These can range from $10,000 to $30,000 or more per year, with some of the most elite clubs costing even more. Additionally, these clubs might have initiation fees that can range from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

It’s also important to note that many yacht clubs have additional costs beyond the annual membership dues. These can include initiation fees for new members, monthly minimum spending requirements at the club’s facilities, and additional fees for docking, storage, and maintenance services.

Additional Considerations

Some yacht clubs require yacht ownership as a prerequisite before being accepted into the club. Hence, while the yacht club membership itself might only be between $500 and $2,000, the true price of a yacht club membership might be tied to the cost of ownership of your yacht as well.

Bottom Line: Simply Ask If Interested

If you’re interested in joining a yacht club, make a list of yacht clubs that you might be interested in joining, and reach out to them via email or phone to get the most accurate and up-to-date information. Most yacht club members are quite friendly and are willing to help those who are interested in joining.

We wish you good luck in your yacht club search, and hope that you were able to find this article helpful.

What are the Cheapest Yacht Clubs?

The cheapest yacht clubs charge just under $1,000 per year for membership. While this does give you access to different types of experiences, you may be disappointed by the overall amenities.

Some yacht clubs are known for their extravagant country club styles that help you to embrace a particular lifestyle. They include Olympic-sized swimming pools, state-of-the-art tennis courts, and fine dining.

Everything has a beautiful waterfront view. It can feel like you are in the middle of an idyllic paradise without ever even having to leave the shore. If this is what you can gain from the most expensive yacht clubs, you should set your expectations much lower for the cheaper yacht clubs.

The cheaper yacht clubs lack the community aspect of these exclusive options. They feature dry slips and the occasional party, but not much more.

Some of them may have the feel of a county park with some picnic benches, outdoor grills, and a moderately sized swimming pool. Expect a much more casual atmosphere when you choose to go with a cheaper yacht club.

It is even possible that they are simply “paper yacht clubs” that do not even maintain a physical building of their own.

How Much Do the Most Expensive Yacht Clubs Cost to Join?

The most expensive yacht clubs can vary a great deal in price. Most of them will cost between $3,000 and $4,000 per year. However, you can certainly find more exclusive clubs that will cost above and beyond this.

Keep in mind that these more expensive clubs generally are not open to the public. They are offered by invitation only and you must have a member sponsor you to be considered for entrance.

When you are paying for a more expensive yacht club, you should make sure that you are really going to get your money’s worth. These expensive clubs promote a certain type of elegant lifestyle.

Make sure that you are planning to take advantage of all the amenities available from one of these clubs before you sink too much money into the membership fees. The social aspect of these expensive yacht clubs is extremely important.

If you plan to simply rent a boat from time to time, you might be able to go with a cheaper yacht club.

What Is Generally Included in the Membership Fee for Yacht Clubs?

Have you been wondering why you should join a yacht club? Many potential members want to know what they can expect from their membership fees before they commit to a year-long contract. There are many advantages to signing up for a membership with a well-known yacht club.

Amenities and Activities

First and foremost, you get access to activities and cruises planned by board members. These might be various sailing activities, dinners, get-togethers, tennis matches, or other events that take up a lazy Sunday afternoon.

You also gain access to any amenities that surround the yacht club’s marina. For many programs, this means a fitness center, pool, and tennis courts. Several locations also offer fine dining, meeting rooms, and more.

It is like a private oasis where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the regular world. Time moves slowly when you’re enjoying the amenities here.

Many yacht clubs have programs that introduce children (and adults!) to sailing. Take classes to learn more about improving your technique, sailing safety, and other important aspects of life on the open water.

Access to the Fleet

The main reason why most people join yacht clubs is to be able to rent out boats instead of purchasing their own. Joining a yacht club may give you access to an entire fleet of yachts that can be reserved for a day or weeks at a time. Some yacht clubs allow you to rent boats for up to ten days at a time.

Others do not allow you to rent out ships. They are primarily geared toward individuals who already own a yacht or will own a yacht in the future. Make sure you know the difference in advance.

Are There any Additional Costs Besides the Membership Fees?

Unfortunately, the membership fees are not the only cost associated with joining a yacht club. Most of the clubs in the United States also have a one-time initial fee that tends to cost thousands of dollars. Many will range from $1,500 to $5,000 depending on the location and the exclusivity of the yacht club.

This one-time fee should be the only additional money you pay except for fuel. Most yacht clubs do not cover the cost of the fuel used in the ship during your rental if renting is an option. Be prepared for what this could cost you.

If you cause damage to the ship, you can also expect some out-of-pocket costs. Insurance should cover the damage, but you will likely be asked to cover the cost of the deductible.

Be sure to inquire about how much you may be on the hook for before you sign up for any particular yacht club. Accidents can happen, even to the most experienced sailors. Make sure that you can afford the mishap in advance.

Is a Yacht Club Membership Right for You?

Understanding what the real cost of a yacht club membership is can be the first step toward determining if this is right for you. Many people love the luxuries available through the more expensive yacht clubs, but they may not be able to afford it. Consider what is most important in a club to you before deciding to sign on the dotted line for an annual membership.

The Knysna Estuary provides an extensive stretch of water for sailors to enjoy. Not only is water plentiful, it also provides some unique challenges taxing the skill of some of the most experienced sailors and providing a bundle of fun.

The Knysna Estuary, surrounded by hills, being tidal requires local knowledge if you are to master the channels at low tide while fighting an ever changing wind, not to mention avoiding the pleasure vessels that ply the waters.

KYC boasts an active dinghy and catamaran following with club sailing taking place most Saturday afternoons during the sailing season. Inshore sailing is managed by a Sailing Committee steered by the Sailing Secretary. Our sailing season follows our weather and generally kicks off with the Opening Cruise in September (the beginning of summer) running through to the Closing Cruise at the end of April the following year. The annual sailing calendar gives details of all club races, regional regattas as well as a few of the more significant events being run in other parts of the country. The various club series races eg The Parkes Cup, Ma Wyatt Trophy are named after past and present members who have supported the club generously over many years and made the club what it is today.

While all class of boats are accepted the preferred single handed class for dinghy sailing is Laser and Finn. Spearhead, 470 and 505 class boats are popular double handed dinghies.

Popular Catamarans are the Hobie 14 and 16 as well as the Dart class.

Club sailors, being members of the Eden sub-region of SA Sailing, take part in regional interclub regattas, interschool regattas and other regional as well as National sailing events. The club has also hosted National events in the past and is to host the 2015 Hobie 14 Nationals in January 2015.

Bridge and Rescue

You don’t have to be a sailor to be involved in sailing, as with every sport or activity there are always the backroom crew who make it all happen. If you have slight bend towards water but don’t want to get wet then helping out on the bridge or assisting on rescue is the way to go. Previous experience is not necessary, you will not be thrown in at the deep end without a life jacket, there will always be someone experienced around to help and guide you. If you are new to the club get involved, get to know people and enjoy your club.

KYC is an accredited SA Sailing (ISAF - International Sailing Federation) training establishment. The training offered is open to all and largely driven by demand, with the majority of coaching being directed to junior sailors. This does not mean that if you feel you have passed junior status that you are not welcome, on the contrary, we will be delighted to impart some of the basics to help get you on the water.

While coaching is largely a practical activity there is always admin in the background; if you feel you would like to get involved in any aspect of coaching your help and assistance will be welcomed.

Boats and equipment also require ongoing maintenance and repair and a will pair of hands in this department is always welcome.

The governing body of canoe racing in South Africa is CSA who have a system in place for the grading of all races and paddler proficiencies. Races are rated from flatwater C grade to extreme A+ rivers and new paddlers have to move up through their proficiency grades to be able to compete.

The Knysna Canoe Club section and other Garden Route clubs run a number of fun C grade races throughout the year and all are welcome to enter. The exciting Brak and Little Fish River races in the Eastern Cape are also well worth travelling to and are aimed at introducing new paddlers to the sport.

Knysna Canoe Club holds a well-attended time trial every Tuesday evening come rain or shine. The course alternates between a four lap 11 km race down to the railway bridge and a five lap 9km course through the Quays. Most time trials include sponsored lucky draw prizes. Anyone is welcome to join in regardless of fitness level or expertise and it is not compulsory to complete the full distance.

Boat Review by Two Can Sail (Knysna 500SE)

The Knysna Yacht Company, a boutique yacht builder out of South Africa, has combined a sleek silhouette with a stylish interior and equipped her with all the live aboard comforts to take a couple anywhere in the world. The key features in the design of the Knysna 500SE allow her to be handled by just two people. She seems to have been designed utilizing the top ten features we look for when a couple is choosing a catamaran. As business owners of “Two Can Sail” we specialize in working with couples assisting them through the yacht selection process and personal training aboard. We have sailed and surveyed more than 200 different models of yachts including at least 30 different models of catamaran primarily in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and the Caribbean, often sailing offshore with our clients to assist them in their first voyages, which has lead us to outline these preferred features for those who want to sail to distant shores on a catamaran.

two can sail knysna 500se review

Helm Location

The Knysna 500 SE has a cushioned bench seat built for two people, which provides excellent visibility from the helm and allows the operator sight of all four corners of the vessel. In addition you can communicate with your partner from the helm as you are in sight of each other. The seating provides security at the helm so that even in a heavy seaway one cannot be launched over the side deck. The two engines are controlled with single lever throttles and instrumentation for navigation is at your fingertips. The halyards and reef lines are run back along the deck to the helm and the roller furling gear for the genoa is within reach. The main and jib sheets, are also run along the cabin top allowing for single-handed control of the boat.

Galley Style

A U-shaped galley, which provides security for the cook while underway as well as plenty of storage and refrigeration, with additional refrigeration located below in the starboard hull.

The waterline entry forward along with long waterline aft combined with the wide beam provides a more sea kindly motion. In addition the shape of the underbody directs the waves downward and the wake from the hulls meet far aft of the vessel, which in turn lessens slamming. The transom is protected by a solid wall along the aft end of the cockpit preventing waves from breaking over the transom.

Engine Horsepower

The engines are appropriately powered for the windage of the vessel with twin 57 hp Yanmar diesels and saildrives, allowing for her to be maneuvered to the dock even in windy conditions. The access to the engine space can be customized for either under the berth or through a deck hatch aft, which allows a large space to service the engines and hydraulic steering.

Transom and dingy stowage

The stern steps extend the hulls and since they are gently sloped they create that additional waterline and a platform to ease boarding the dingy. The dingy has custom designed lifting tackle that extends from the boom and secures the dingy on chalks instead of swinging on davits for offshore sailing.

The Knysna 500 SE is laid out with owner’s hull portside; a custom fit double berth aft, bench seats and an office set up midship. Forward is a watertight bulkhead that can house your dive compressor; just aft of the bulkhead is a huge standing shower stall just aft of that is a ladies vanity with seating. There is a dedicated machinery room with access to all the equipment that needs regular attention, like the generator, watermaker, etc. The sea strainers are also easily accessed under the cabin sole and are installed so that any seawater spills harmlessly into the bilge. The starboard hull houses the two guest cabins each with en-suite heads. The forward stateroom also has a large shower stall with access through the watertight bulkhead to a washing machine. The ventilation has been carefully thought out so that the hatches provide natural airflow from the deck to the side opening portlights, as well as the perfect airflow through the shower and heads. The Knysna 500SE strikes an incredible balance between live aboard comfort and ease of access for the realities of yacht maintenance.

Sailing Features

She is equipped with a full roach on the main sail instead of the square top main which makes the sail easy to flake onto the boom and yet provides plenty of sail area. The genoa can be reefed along with the full batten mainsail for heavy air. For light air sailing there is a screecher on a furler attached to a bowsprit ready to deploy. The Harken Battcar system allows the main to drop easily. When you turn to go dead down wind, just unfurl both the screecher and the genoa to go wing on wing, in just 6 knots of apparent wind the Knysna 500 will sail along at 4.5 knots. The placement of the rigging allows for more opportunity to sail at a larger variety of angles to the wind. In addition we are pleasantly surprised to find her ICW capable. (62’4” clearance) when the owners would like the possibility of going in shore in bad weather.

Weight to Length and Sail Area

At 13.5 tons light ship displacement she has plenty of load carrying ability along with the sail area of 800 sq. ft. of mainsail and 538 sq. ft. of Genoa, to move her even in light air.

Anchor Set Up

The anchor deploys from the bow so that the vessel naturally blows away from the chain. She is equipped with a Windlass with both up and down controls as well as a chain counter. The Knysna 500SE has a teak catwalk with hidden “chain-guides” which allow the foredeck person a secure platform while anchoring. She comes equipped standard with a Rocna 40kg anchor and 10mm calibrated galvanized chain 50-meters/ 18mm Anchor warp of 30 meters appropriate for her weight and windage.

Last but not least is the ability to carry water and fuel, the Knysna 500 SE has a 158.5 gallons each of fuel and water. Not to mention she comes equipped with all the live aboard niceties, like 6KW generator: a huge battery bank 1260 Amp hours for the house bank and 2 deep cycle engine start batteries; 3000 watt Inverter/2500 watt charger, with battery monitoring system, watermaker, reverse cycle air conditioning and heat plus a lot more, all standard.
