Mooring in Northern Chesapeake Bay?

  • Add to quote

I am from Canada and just bought a used 44' sailboat (5.5 draft) in Annapolis. Rather than take her back to the Lake Ontario we have decided to keep her on northern part of the Bay. (8 hour drive from home) We find Annapolis too expensive. We need to find a place to keep her that is well protected, with an active sailing cruises that we can learn the "local knowledge" of the Bay. We have looked at White Rocks and Maryland YC, Bowley's on the West side. Rock Hall - Swan Creek and Great Oak Landing and Worton creek on the East side. Looking for a friendly, clean place with laundry that won't nickel and dime you to death with some reciprocals. Any recommendations ? Thanks - Shawn

Are you looking for a liveaboard situation. How important are amenities We were 10 years at MYC . 6 now at Whitehall Marina . We love where we are now, safe, no restaurant, 90% sailboaters. Cheaper than all the above you have visited. Great sailing grounds . MYC great facility. Not cheap. Politics. Open to being accessed for major club projects. All the others good places but not cheap either. Chech Castle Rock Marina- Chester River, hartge on West River and us, Whitehall Marina PM me for more info

Check out Oak Harbour Marina on Rock Creek in Pasadena. Not sure of costs but you can do your own work, close to highways and marina supply. No fancy amenities but clean, well run and good people. Tod Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

We did visit Whitehall and it was really nice. Also Castle Rock told us they have silting problems and cannot guarantee access. MYC has reduce rates and a membership drive but I wonder why they have this problem. Any thoughts on White rock marina beside MYC?

Your request made me think of the two Canadian families that own boats nearby us and have a similar drive. One is from Montreal, the other from London, if you can imagine that drive. Cornwall to the center of RI is under 7 hours, according to google. The sailing in the Chessy is best in the shoulder seasons. Our locals there may disagree, but I suspect the won't. If you are focusing on the summer, you may consider New England. Closer and probably more options.

Castle Rock has a shallow area, but one of the SN members T37chef keeps is Tartan there and has a similar draft , you could ask him for first hand info. MYC....nice facility, yes they have a membership issue and have had for the last 15 years of declining membership. We were there when it was full (141 slips) , now maybe 80 slips filled with quite a number which cannot be used due to silting or disreapair, or electrical issues. and that’s why the discounts. You have to commit for future years. They have a cash flow issue. Every repair or large scale project must be shared amongst the boaters only. The 200 social me,bears don’t share these e lenses. When you sign a contract with them ( and it is a contract) you agree to be accessed for any additional improvements to the facility. This can include and has...fuel dock up grades and tanks, bathrooms, pier repair as well as grounds , clubhouse and pool. The infrastructure is old and needs updating, but they have no reserves to Adequately do this. They are facing two large looming expenditures, the septic field for the clubhouse is crumbling, and the pool foundation is suspect. So their rates appear to be cheap for two years with the 50% and 25% discounts but there is that unknown fee. Many of the places you looked at are similar but the fees aren’t. We are $2000 cheaper than say MYC , Rock Hall, But we don’t maintain a pool, restaurant or fuel dock. We however have a marine repair onsite, are owned by a sailor, and have an unbeatable location while at the same time much more storm protected than Rock Hall ( unless in HRbor Haven ) . You have to decide which amenities you want and are necessary. We are sailors and prefer to be out vs at the dock, so we don’t need or want a restaurant/ pool. We like being around sailors who use their boats. Our location is premium in terms of all the rivers of the Chesapeake. North -40 miles gets you to Still Pond/ Worton, Rock Hall and Chester -25 miles, St Micheals and Wye River 25 miles, Annapolis and Severn - 6 miles, Choptank - 30 miles, Solomon’s - 42 miles. We love our 10 years in the Northern ChesapeKe, but moving south of the Bay Bridge has meant greater cruising opertunities and more wind.

No doubt New England is great June! July and August. We cruise up there sometimes then. Chesapeake is sailable for 9-10 months. We start in March and end the end of November. Many marinas slips are yearly, and you don’t have to pull your boat as it doesn’t freeze. We pull ours ever 3 years. The prices for a marnina up north are much greater with a very limited number of them. Many keep their boats on moorings. NE is a great sailing ground. Chesapeake will give you more use by far. When we take our October fall cruise in the Chesapeake for 10 days, most of my northern friends have pulled their boats as the marinas require them out by Oct 1

Ask away... I've keep a boat north of the bay bridge for more than 30 years.. Lots of choices. My current sailboat was docked at Oak Harbor, Maryland Yacht Club, and Fairview Marina all on Rock Creek, Patapsco River. My preferred were Oak Harbor and MYC. I have kept the boat at Castle Harbor Marina for the past four years. I have enjoyed all but for your needs and considering BWI Airport, I would consider Oak Harbor or MYC... Castle Harbor would require traveling the bay bridge, and with the current situation with repairs and lane closure on tbe bridge you will be happier on the western shore. (Most of the year, 6 foot draft or less is fine for Castle Harbor Marina BTW ) I wouldn't overlook marinas such as Whitehall South of the Bay Bridge... At the same time Marinas North of have their advantages too. Some more infor what you're looking for would help... On the other hand... Stay away from Middle River Marinas and South River Marinas... And as you have indicated Marinas near Annapolis are pricey. The Magothy has a few Marinas but most are private docks... And the cut into the Magothy is cluttered with fishing boats and crab pots. Good luck... Hopeful we can help ya out. (Oak Harbor is still my go to for DIY marin anywhere North of the Bay Bridge)

Not sure why said to avoid Middle River / South River We had the choice. I can only tell you what made up my mind. 1- wind. More consistent wind the further south you go. From Rock Hall / Patapsco South there is more and steadier wind. We have found below the Bay Bridge even more. If you go above Pooles many times no wind. 2- middle and south river have way more portion of power boats and wakes 3- noise from Martin state airport of military planes 4 - more choices of rivers and anchorage areas 5- less debris in the water when Conowingo Dam opens the further south you go This is not to say there aren’t nice spots at middle river or north, just that other areas have greater opportunities

POSSIBLE. i DON'T HAVE ENOUGH EXPERIENCE FOR A THOROUGH COMPARISON 2- middle and south river have way more portion of power boats and wakes TOUCHE. THE ENTRANCE TO MIDDLE RIVER ON A WEEKEND AFTERNOON CAN BE INTERESTING. 3- noise from Martin state airport of military planes TWO-SIDED. YES, YOU DEFINITELY CAN HEAR THE PLANES LANDING AND TAKING OFF. i ACTUALLY FIND THAT INTERESTING BUT TASTES DIFFER. 4 - more choices of rivers and anchorage areas THAT IS SUBJECTIVE. I FOR ONE VERY MUCH ENJOY THE ACCESS TO APG (WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAYS ONLY). IF YOU IGNORE SOME STRANGE INSTALLATIONS, THIS IS AS CLOSE TO AS CAPTAIN JOHN SMITH SAW THE CHESAPEAKE AS YOU CAN GET. LARGEST CONCENTRATION OF BALD EAGLES IN THE CHESAPEAKE (OVER 300) ETC 5- less debris in the water when Conowingo Dam opens the further south you go WELL, THE STUFF DOES NOT DISAPPEAR, IT IS SIMPLY DILUTED AS THE BAY WIDENS. BUT NOT BY THAT MUCH. UNTIL YOU GET ESSENTIALLY TO THE POTOMAC, THE WIDTH OF THE MAIN BAY INCREASES BY NOT MUCH MORE THAN A FACTOR 2 (NOT COUNTING RIVERS, EASTERN BAY ETC WHERE DEBRIS IS UNLIKELY TO ENTER SINCE IT IS SWEPT DOWN BY THE CURRENT). SO, YES THERE IS SOME DILUTION BUT UNTIL YOU GO _REALLY_ WAY DOWN THE EFFECT IS PRETTY SMALL This is not to say there aren't nice spots at middle river or north, just that other areas have greater opportunities Click to expand...

yes, both are downsides. There are upsides, too (see also my reply to "the other chef". Cost, availability of a wide range of marinas of different types, easy access to PA, Baltimore, BWI (via I-95) etc.

My view of Middle River is that most of the marinas there are working boatyards so if I'm going to be in a boatyard marina I'd rather it be one that doesn't have the downsides stated above and be in a location where I can be out sailing in the Bay in under an hour. The exceptions to the working boatyards I know of that aren't exclusively powerboat are Baltimore Yacht Club and Bowleys Marina. BYC is a nice facility but it's in a shallow creek so they relegate the sailboats to the ends of 600 foot long piers. I love Bowleys' resort-like land amenities but the docks have hardly any wind or wake protection from any direction. It's not a marina in which I'd even think about leaving a boat in the water over the winter. The fairways are also extremely narrow (which would bad enough even in a wonderfully protected marina) so I could see some harrowing moments trying to dock a 44-footer even in a moderate breeze. I know a very experienced skipper who was foiled trying to keep a 40 footer at that marina. Might be more doable with a bow thruster or if you could snag one of the handful of side-tie slips for boats of your size.

MY BOAT IS AT BOWLEYS. IT TAKES ME ABOUT 5 MINUTES TO BE OUT SAILING IN THE BAY (i RAISE MY SAILS AT DAYMARKER R6). SAME APPLIES TO BALTIMORE YACHT CLUB. YOU ARE CORRECT ABOUT THE MARINAS FURTHER UP THE RIVER, LIKE MARYLAND MARINA. I agree with others the sailing will be better below Bay Bridge. The Eastern Shore is going to be substantially cheaper than Annapolis as long as you don't choose the Ritz (St. Mike's, Oxford). I would look at Cambridge Yacht Basin in the Choptank River.

We bought a Jeanneau 439 named Baxter. Deal was done in early December.

Congratulations. Have you figured out where you’ll keep her this season?

We have it narrowed down to Lippincott Marina (1st) or Swan Creek in Rock Hall. We need to confirm the access and width of a slip they will have available for us. There are many really nice places but we prefer to be around other people with sailboats and plan to be out cruising the bay rather than sitting around a pool all day! We decided on the East side of the bay as we feel the traffic entering would be less of a concern. It is still an 8 hour drive so if we can prevent sitting in traffic for the last hour then that is a factor.

Some of the Rock Hall marinas are better protected than others. The ones in Rock Hall Harbor are subject to direct wind from the SW. Swan Creek Marina is on the more protected side. The owners I have dealt with are very nice people. Lipincott Marina is in a congested area . It is also a nice place. The area is very crowded boat wise with lots of powerboats which transient the Narrows area. Many of the restaurants have Tiki Bars and live bands outside on the weekends. It’s location also means that it will be more than likely subject to car traffic tie ups Sunday afternoons to get back across the bridge. Lipincott is easy out to Eastern Bay and Miles / Wye Rivers. You have the Narrows option to go out to rivers above the Bay Bridge and the beautiful Chester. However it is easily a 2 hour sail to the open bay through the Narrows and 3 hours at least down eEastern Bay. Rock Hall is accessible to the Bay in half an hour. Chester, Magothy, Worton , West, Rhodes, Whitehall, Severn are about 3-4 hours away. Chester is easy to sail on days the Bay has extremely large winds. One marina is in a high energy area....mainly powerboaters. The other on a more laid back area with a lot of sailboaters. Rock Hall has many marine services. If you are coming from Canada you can access either down 301 off 95 in Delaware rather than take 95 to the Bay Bridge. Personally I would go to Rock Hall for a peaceful laid back beautiful weekend or week experience. Both are good choices. If you want further info feel free to PM me.

I just looked at Lippincott Marina a few days ago... The price is a bit high by comparison to a few others in the area. I was considering moving m boat there but for $130 less than I pay now it isn't worth it for me. Its a working marina which has its benefits and drawbacks. Facilities are pretty sparse as well. As chef2sail said, Rockhall has a lot more options. I'm staying another year at Castle Harbor Marina, the North side of Kent Island off the Chester River. The only thing I don't like about CHM is, if a strong NW wind (20 + knots) is the channel to tbe basin can get a bit thin. My draft is only a little more than four feet, I've bottomed out only once though. Was blowing 30+ for a day and had blown all the water out of the bay, and it was late Fall, but 97% of the time its more than fine. I would suggest you check it out before signing a slip contract.

Just wanted to wrap this up by letting people know we made a decision to stay at Osprey Point Marina in Rock Hall. Casey made me a good deal and although it has a little more amenities than we originally intended, we feel the price/ value and proximity to sailers will be great! Thanks everyone. BTW we intend on renaming our boat Ballandra so maybe we will meet or greet some of you in the future! Shawn Maloney

I did try them twice but they did advise me that with a 5'4" draft it would be a challenge. I appreciated their honesty and I agree it looks like a good place

sailboat moorings chesapeake bay

Are you sure you can get into Osprey Point at low tide with 5'4" draft? I once tapped bottom going past there in a charter boat with almost a foot less draft than that. The chart shows 5' all around there. Regardless, I'm glad to have another Rock Hall neighbor!

We’ve been back there quite a few times to Haven Harbor, you will be close to the bottom , but if you stay close to the reds and just off the Osprey slips you should be ok. There are many deeper draft sailboats back there. It’s a silty bottom there to boot. Good luck with your choice

Our draft is 5'3" and we've never had a problem getting into Osprey. I guess we've been lucky. We move our boat back there for named storms if we're not pulling it since it is more protected and has floating docks.

Looking for a Chesapeake Bay Boat

Sailboat Owners, What boats would you recommend for a family brand new to cruising in the Chesapeake Bay? We’re an Active Duty Military family, with a budget limited to $60K or less. For Family (Crew), I only plan on having myself, my wife Ali, and 3 year old Heidi on board, which means it’ll be important that I can single hand the boat 95% of the time. I only have limited sailing experience. I grew up sailing with my dad in FL and have sailed a 1985 Hunter 23 on the Bay for the last 2 years (and learned a LOT of hard lessons). I’ve been looking at Tartan 37’s because of their seaworthy reputation, and enough room for my wife and I to expand our family. We’d like to use the aft double berth as a “Baby Room” (when necessary, hopefully next year) when sailing. I’ve also looked at some Beneteau 321’s because they’re affordable, and comfortable looking for short trips. I do worry about them not having enough storage areas though…. What would you all recommend? We have a house on the South River, and will not be living on the boat full time, but plan on taking 1-2 trips max. When I retire in 6 years, we’d like the option to either cruise the Caribbean or cross the pond to the Mediterranean, but we don’t necessarily need to own a boat now that can do that (unless the price is right). What sort of minimum equipment should we be looking at, I think the longest trip I’d dare to take right now is from the South River to Virgina Beach and back…. Though I want to use the boat I purchase to practice for longer (and offshore) trips. I appreciate your feedback! Dan

Dan; You are shopping in the biggest boat market in the Mid Atlantic - lots of boats out there. While I doubt you will be able to find a seaworthy Tartan 37 I understand why you would like one, they are great cruisers! My suggestion would be to retain a trustworthy and experienced buyers broker. If you PM me I will give you the name of a great independent local broker that you can speak to. Good luck and welcome to Annapolis

One thing you'll want to consider is the draft of the boat. While I don't know the Chesapeake I am aware that there is some thin water there. If you buy a boat with too much draft you'll either miss some great cruising or be constantly afraid of running aground. That's certainly true around here. 5' draft is about the maximum. Unfortunately, most modern cruisers in the 30+ length draw around that or more - especially if they have any performance in their pedigree. Also, look for a fractional rig for shorthanded handling. They typically have a small headsail that can easily tacked which is really important in your situation. The main sail is easily adjusted with the backstay for power so you'll have a lot of control right there at the helm. There is no way you are going to want to haul in a big jib every time you want to change direction. This is a BIG item that isn't often discussed. After my wife had Chemo-therapy and radiation therapy there was no way she could do it. That made me crew and her the helm. That's fine but when the wind piped up she would get scared. We sold that boat for that reason. Don't ignore the cat boats. For example the Non Such line or the traditional Cat boats such as Marshall. They typically have enormous room below and just the one sail to handle. On the Non Such the unstayed fiberglass mast bends off in higher wind, effectively depowering the rig. The Cat boats have very good stability because of their width and they don't draw a lot of water - most are centerboarders. I hope I given you some food for thought. You are sure to hear from others with their ideas. BTW I like the Tartan 37 (The old centerboard one).

Dan a Tartan 37 or other similar cruisers are not the kind of boat that you would take out for a couple of hours pleasure ride. These are boats designed for the open seas and are just not responsive enough to make them enjoyable in protected waters. It would be like driving a bus to go to the mall. I think that what you may need for the next 5 years is a boat in the 30' to 32' range that can be easy to single hand and inviting to take out at a moments notice for an evening sail. It would provide adequate room and stability for short trips and would be much less expensive to operate . I do understand that in the Bay there are military marinas that offer real affordable rates but even when visiting other towns you will not pay as much for a transient slip. Consider insurance costs and maintenance expense and the savings over 5 years will be a good chunk of money. You should be able to find a production boat in good condition for less than 50% of your budgeted amount. A shallow draft boat will expand your destination options. Purchase well, take good care of it and in 5 years you could probably sell it for what you paid for it and then go seek your heavy cruiser.

look at the reviews in Good Old Boat and on the Boat US website: With your budget you could afford a well maintained 28-36' Pearson, Seafarer, Cape Dory, Ericsson, or S 2. I would not put a wife and 3 year old on a Marshall cat : wind comes up, you've forgotten to reef, and your family will be terrified.

Ron20324

I agree with the 5 foot draft limit. Since you looked at a B321, maybe look at a B323, my model. The wife will love "the bathroom, not a head" as people say. 4'9", elect fridge, standup room in the VEE. I can g9ve you oodles of DIY to add storage. I think a couple are still in the owner's mods.

Bad Obsession

Bad Obsession

Hrm....There are tons of good answers here. You really have to consider how you plan to use the boat and what section of the Bay you will be on. There is a bit of a difference between the Northern Bay, the Middle Bay, and the Southern Bay. How long do you plan on being out at a time? How serious is your family about cruising with you? Do you plan to anchor or go into a slip? What features do you have to have? What features would be nice to have? What features can you live without? Answer those questions before boat shopping. You also want to find a boat with a good diesel that is in good shape. Check out the sails while you are on here because that could be a refit item that runs a bit in cost. Here is something to consider. You say your budget is about $60K. That means that you need to keep your boat purchase closer to $50K because you will need left over money to refit the boat. When you are seriously looking at boats consider what money you will need for the refit. Another thing to consider is your yearly budget. The longer the boat, the fatter the budget needs to be. If the boat needs a lot of work then that could dip into your budget. Find a marina that you want to keep your boat and find out the prices, the depth of the slips, the property tax for the area you will be living in, and all of the hidden costs. Can you find a DYI marina or do you have to pay the marina to do a bottom job for you? The bay has a lot of shallow water, as others have said. Keep your draft less than 5 feet. I have spend most of my life on the Chesapeake Bay and I have even worked on the water when I was a kid. I know most of the Bay pretty well but my knowledge is a fleeting second compared to others around here. That being said, there are TONS of places to go, things to see, and things to do. There are great special event. Also, Tangier Island and Smith Island are a must see. The summers can be brutal!! You want to have a bimini and probably a dodger. If you single hand a good autopilot is a must! Someone has mentioned a Pearson. These are good boats but know what you are getting into before you get it. Get a good survey because, while they were well made, they haven't been made in some time. This is true for most boats that you are looking at. You mentioned a Tartan 37. They too are good boats but I would really get it inspected well. If it is a centerboard then really have that checked. Personally the centerboard would make me a bit nervous. One other thing to know is that, while it is a nice boat and sails well along with a good reputation, the cabin may not be as big as other 37 foot boats. Another boat to look at is a Catalina 34. They are good sailing boats, have a really good cabin layout, and perform well. My Uncle has been sailing an MK I Catalina 34 around for the last 10 years or so. You may be able to find an MKii Catalina 34 in your budget. Actually, don't concentrate on the make/model of the boat right now. Figure out what you want and need and then find something to match that as close as possible. All boats are compromises.

Chart a Course to Shipwright Harbor Marina

Shipwright Harbor is a family-friendly marina nestled on Maryland’s western shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Deale, Maryland, featuring 250 deep water slips, a private saltwater pool, and complimentary slipholder events from crab feasts to outdoor movie nights. Our helpful and friendly staff makes your experience pleasant and convenient. Deale is a friendly fishing town offering waterfront restaurants and every service and amenity a boater could desire.

Located only 25 minutes from the Washington, D.C. beltway, Shipwright is one of the closest Chesapeake Bay marinas to Northern Virginia and D.C. It’s essentially a pay-as-you-go arrangement that caters to boaters who are passing through an area, exploring new destinations, or simply seeking a temporary mooring. Transient dockage is a lifeline for boaters in unfamiliar waters, providing a safe and convenient haven to rest, refuel, and rejuvenate during their journey.

Boat Slips In Chesapeake Bay For Winter: Trident Marine

Winter Boat Storage- Chesapeake bay, MD

The winter is here and your precious boats and yachts must be stored properly. In case you are one of them who rents a boat slip only when it’s absolutely necessary, winter is that time. Being the largest estuary in the U.S., Boat Slips in Chesapeake Bay is the most popular choice for many. The “ Chesapeake Harbour Marina ” is famous for its iconic boating locations with breathtaking sunsets, abundant fishing grounds, and significant nautical history.

Why Choosing Our Chesapeake Harbour Marina For Winter Boat Storage?

Located in a protected basin just South of Back Creek, near the mouth of the Severn River, our marina of the Chesapeake Bay is less likely to freeze. Therefore, it’s always a good option to store your boats here in the winter. Plus with Trident Marine, you can expect world-class maintenance of your vessels. As the southern part of the bay rarely freezes, you may even have the opportunity to take your boat out and enjoy the cool breeze. In case, there is a little ice, you can always use an ice-eater but it is highly unlikely that you would need any.

There are many advantages of choosing to get a boat slip like better storage, maintenance, efficiency, etc. More so during the winter months. If you live in Annapolis or nearby the Chesapeake Bay, especially the northern parts, chances are that you will face the snow. If you store your boat in the backyard or garage, it may become a troublesome job to keep the snow out and away from the boat.

Advantages of Boat Slips by Trident Marine in Winters:

  • Purchasing a boat slip ensures expert repair and maintenance of your boats and yachts.
  • You can extend the boating season even in December, January, February and so. With our Chesapeake Bay location, storing or docking your boat in the water is a viable option, even in the winter. Enjoy a winter cruise!
  • Boats are designed to be in the water. In-water storage provides access to the boat for socializing or working below decks.
  • We at Trident Marine, are prepared to face the harsh climate, be it storm or ice. We will safeguard your vessel in the best possible way.
  • We help winterize your vessel’s engine, thru-hulls, etc.
  • In case, you choose to run some on-board systems throughout the winter, our Shore Power Hookups and 24*7 on-duty mechanics are always there to inspect your shore power cord and dock pedestal for any signs of corrosion or overheating at the plug socket and terminals.
  • With our efficient yacht butter services, you are assured to get your boat ready to sail at any time, whenever it’s suitable to go for boating.

How Much It Costs For Marina Slip in the Chesapeake Bay?

Depending on the location, facilities, and amenities provided by the marina, the charges for a boat slip in the Chesapeake Bay can vary. So, some research beforehand can save you a lot of hassle. If you live in areas adjacent to the bay and want to rent out a slip on an annual basis. Renting a boat slip annually is often more reasonable than renting for a particular season or a month. You can choose from a floating dock, fixed dock, or covered fixed dock. The charges will vary depending on the length of your boat as well. It is always advisable to talk to the marina directly, over the phone, or visit. You might be able to strike a deal that you are comfortable with by customizations of the services.

ST. MICHAELS, Md., Aug. 28, 2024 – The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum is pleased to announce its latest exhibition, Sailing to Freedom: The Maritime Dimensions of the Underground Railroad , will open to guests on Friday, Sept. 27, in the Changing Exhibitions Gallery.

Opening during International Underground Railroad month and running through 2025, this special exhibition explores the lesser-known maritime aspects of the Underground Railroad while highlighting stories of enslaved African Americans’ journeys to freedom along Atlantic Coast water routes, including the Chesapeake Bay.

Based upon the 2021 book “Sailing to Freedom,” the exhibition expands the understanding of how freedom was achieved by sea and what the journey looked like for many African Americans. Self-emancipation along the Underground Railroad was not entirely by overland routes. Many enslaved persons made their way to freedom using the Bay and other coastal water routes along the Atlantic seaboard.

CBMM will host an exclusive opening event for CBMM members on Thursday, Sept. 26, beginning at 5:30pm, to explore the exhibition before it opens to all guests the next day. CBMM members can register now at cbmm.org/SailingtoFreedomOpening .

“Recent scholarly research has revealed new details about enslaved peoples’ access to the waterfront and boats, their knowledge of maritime skills, and their remarkable ability to navigate both land and water to achieve their freedom,” Director of Curatorial Affairs & Exhibitions Jen Dolde said. “This is especially evident in the Chesapeake region, where the rivers and Bay provided the primary modes for trade and transportation. Primary source records abound with astounding stories of the ingenuity and courage of enslaved people.”

The Baltimore Clipper Young Brutus, with Black seamen working aboard, is portrayed in this painting by Frederic Roux featured in CBMM’s upcoming special exhibition Sailing to Freedom. In Sailing to Freedom , guests will meet figures like Henry “Box” Brown, who escaped to freedom in 1849 by arranging to have himself mailed in a wooden crate to abolitionists in Philadelphia. This summer, teens in CBMM’s Museum Masters camp constructed a recreation of Brown’s crate for the exhibition, basing their design on descriptions from historic manuscripts.

The exhibition’s storytelling is supplemented by artifacts curated from CBMM’s collection and other sources. This includes a model of a log canoe model representing boats used by freedom seekers in the mid-1800s, tools used by enslaved people working in the shipbuilding trade, and a painting of the Baltimore Clipper Young Brutus showing Black mariners on deck.

A portrait of the ship Katherine Jackson , which transported 272 African Americans sold from Maryland and Washington, D.C. to sugar plantations in Louisiana, reveals the dark history of enslavement, while a quilt crafted by members of the National African American Quilt Guild , on loan from the Baltimore-based Universal Sailing Club and commemorating the 10 th anniversary of the Souls at Sea remembrance ceremony , depicts 14 ships that transported captive Africans as part of the slave trade.

Sailing to Freedom  was curated by New Bedford Whaling Museum Curator of Maritime History Michael Dyer and the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth’s Timothy Walker, who edited the book that serves as source material. Major funding was provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities through the New Bedford Historical Society, with support from numerous community partners, and is brought to CBMM with assistance from the Portsmouth Museums (Va.).

Sailing to Freedom  at CBMM is funded, in part, through CBMM’s Regional Folklife Center under the  Maryland Traditions  program of the Maryland State Arts Council and the generosity of the following supporters: Joan Richtsmeier and Bill Ryan, Beverly and Richard Tilghman, Meta and Bill Boyd, Dock Street Foundation, Dorie and Jeff McGuiness, and Marcia Shapiro and Rabbi Peter Hyman. Viewing this exhibition is included with CBMM general admission, which is always free for CBMM members. Learn more at cbmm.org .

Community rallies to save 'iconic' boat damaged in Tasmania's wild weather

By Megan Oliver

Several days of damaging winds in Tasmania have battered an "iconic" sailing boat that has been moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs for nearly five decades.

On Thursday, locals sprang to help move the "little blue boat" out of the water. Its mast has snapped, but it's out of immediate danger.

What's next?

New owner Darren Pearson says he will find out over the weekend whether the boat is salvageable and can be returned to its mooring at Montrose Bay.

For almost 50 years the little blue boat moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs has been an immovable part of the landscape.

Sea Breeze was built by Robin Attrill in the early 1970s and stayed in his ownership until earlier this year. The boat has changed hands, but remains prominently moored in Montrose Bay.

But after several days of damaging winds , many feared the boat would be completely destroyed.

Its new owner Darren Pearson put out a call for help and received an outpouring of responses.

Mr Pearson said the boat was filling up with water and taking damage from rocks under the water. ( ABC News/Georgie Burgess )

Mooring broken by 'force of mother nature'

Mr Pearson said that while the mooring was only two-and-a-half years old, it wasn't strong enough to withstand extreme winds.

"It had a massive chain, but it has broken very low in the chain. I think it's just the force of mother nature there," he said.

He feared the boat wouldn't be salvageable when he first saw it smashing up against the boardwalk and rocks under the water.

Footage of the boat weathering the winds was circulated widely on social media, with many expressing concern over its condition.

One user wrote, "so devastating. It's a piece of Hobart history".

Another shared, "I hope they can save the boat. It has been there for my whole life, weird if it is no longer out there."

Race to save iconic fixture

Mr Pearson and his family called on the community for help, fearing the boat would be irreparable if left in the bay for much longer.

On Thursday afternoon, a brief window where the wind settled presented an opportunity for locals to spring into action to haul the boat out of the water.

A team from Total Dive Solutions, along with other members of the community, volunteered to help save the boat.  ( Supplied: Total Dive Solutions )

Ethan O'Neil was part of the salvage operation led by Hobart's Total Dive Solutions. He said the boat was in better condition than feared.

"It actually wasn't too bad, considering. The actual hull is pretty fine, the keel is a bit busted up from bouncing on the rocks," he said.

While the rescue was mostly smooth sailing, Mr O'Neil said the mast snapped along the way to the boat ramp, likely caused by water damage.

Mr O'Neil said he hoped to see the boat restored and back in Montrose Bay.

"It's a Tassie icon. It's like the Cartela."

What's next for the Montrose stalwart?

On Friday, Mr Pearson said the boat had been successfully hauled onto land near New Town Bay and he would find out over the weekend whether it was salvageable.

He said the boat was "not too badly damaged" from what he was able to inspect.

"We've got to pull it over to the other side," he said.

"One side's looking good, but we won't know [until we turn it over]. It's leaning on the side that it's actually leaking back out of," he said.

"Water, where it leaked in, it leaked out."

Mr Pearson said he would be grateful to any shipwright willing to volunteer their time to look over the boat, as the salvage bills were racking up

"It's a warning to anyone that a boat in the water is a hole in the pocket," he said.

If all goes well, Mr Pearson hopes to repair the boat and its mooring, and return it to its spot in Montrose Bay.
