Stewart 37 – Yachting Monthly video review

Cruiser-racers are brilliant boats for super-fast passages - until you wipe out at 15 knots, Dick Durham discovers

Stewart 37

In the March 2014 issue of Yachting Monthly, Dick Durham accompanies reader Chris Rustom on a cruise round the Solent aboard his Stewart 37.

What’s she like to sail?

The Stewart 37 is like the best fairground ride, the one you were too scared to go on as a kid – she is all thrills and seriously fast. But she’s skittish, too, and when she gets up on the plane, you need full concentration to keep her direction stable, with her trailing bulb fin keel and semi-balanced spade rudder. The slightest hint of weed on the rudder blade can throw her steering out. My hosts suggested this might have been the cause of my wipeout, but I think they were just being kind.

That said, if you do broach, it’s not a catastrophe: she is easily brought under control by luffing her back to life then bearing off again. The huge rig sports a double-spreader mast, keel- stepped with a rod kicker. The headsail track is hard up against the coachroof for impossibly close windward work. In this, she reminded me of sailing the excellent Arcona 410 – which costs six and a half times more! All the running rigging is led back to the cockpit and she sports a part-adjustable backstay.

Sailing a boat like this will sharpen up your skills and keep the helmsman on his toes. I found myself having to think further ahead.

What’s she like in port and at anchor?

Clearly a boat used to marinas, Ding Dong has no bow roller, but it would be easy enough to get one fitted. However, at anchor she would need a serious amount of chain and a decent-sized pick to keep her on station in blustery weather because her top hamper and light, flat-bottomed, buoyant hull would take a running sheer at the anchor cable as the wind caught each side of the bow. She has a semi-open transom stern and a rather incongruous-looking bathing ladder – nevertheless very useful for getting into and out of a tender, and for man overboard recovery.

Her accommodation is laid out in a seamanlike manner. It reminded me of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s Clipper boats in its functionality: no fuss or bother, just secure and practical living and sleeping space. There’s no saloon table – it would be simple to fit one with drop-leaves between the seats, but Chris and his crew are the sort of sailors who grab their grub and dine on the chart table or in the cockpit.

Would she suit you and your crew?

In a nutshell, she’ll suit the sort of crew who sail for the sheer joy of sailing – she’s emphatically not a floating caravan. She’s tough enough to go anywhere and capable of making astonishingly fast passages, with effectively double the range of a typical modern cruiser – great if you want to explore far and wide but can’t take more than two weeks off work.

She’s ideal for dinghy sailors trading up, delivering as much fun as, say, a Merlin Rocket, but on a larger scale. A crew with only basic boat-handling skills would need to sail gingerly in light airs at first, to get the measure of her, but once in the groove, they’d soon gain confidence in her sea-kindliness and strength.

Her draught is excessive for folks who like to get away from it all up a lonely river. Many small ports and some anchorages just aren’t deep enough. One day, a British boatbuilder will realise that high-performance boats can have centreboards. In the meantime, the French have no end of craft that tick both boxes.

With a few modifications, such as a bow roller and a few soft furnishings, she’d make a terrific high-performance cruiser.

Review of Stuart 37

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season.

The boat is equipped with 189.0 liter fresh water capacity.

The boat equipped with a masthead rig. The advantage of a masthead rig is its simplicity and the fact that a given sail area - compared with a fractional rig - can be carried lower and thus with less heeling moment.

The Stuart 37 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a full keel.

The boat can only enter major marinas as the draft is about 1.98 - 2.08 meter (6.50 - 6.80 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Stuart 37 is 1.91, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.5 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Stuart 37 is about 225 kg/cm, alternatively 1264 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 225 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1264 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Who are Mike Lynch and the other people missing after a yacht sank in Sicily?

Search teams are scouring waters along Italy’s southwestern shore, where a luxury sailing yacht sank early Monday. Six people are known to be missing, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter, and Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife.

Faced with the possibility that some people might have been trapped inside the ship when it sank in a storm, dive teams (including cave divers from the local fire brigade) have been looking for ways to enter the vessel.

Italian firefighter divers bring ashore in a green bag the body of one of the victims of the U.K.-flag vessel Bayesian on Wednesday.

The Palermo Coast Guard told NPR on Tuesday that such an operation is complicated by the depth and position of the hull, which lies on the seabed at a depth of around 50 meters, about a half-mile from the port in Porticello, Sicily.

Lynch, a mathematician and longtime tech entrepreneur, was on a vacation voyage that apparently doubled as a celebration of his recent acquittal on federal fraud charges in the U.S. At least two members of his legal team were reportedly on the boat.

Here’s what we know about Lynch and the tragic situation off Sicily’s coast:

Who is Mike Lynch?

Lynch, 59, made his name as the founder and longtime leader of Autonomy, a search engine and software company that helped companies manage information. Hewlett-Packard bought Autonomy for $11 billion in 2011, but Lynch then faced accusations — and then federal charges — that he had misrepresented his company’s financial health and prospects. Lynch denied the claims, saying HP was blaming him for its own problems.

Lynch was indicted on multiple fraud and conspiracy counts in late 2018, months after Autonomy’s former chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted of fraud (he was later sentenced to five years in prison).

Search resumes for British tech magnate and 5 others after yacht sinks off Sicily

Lynch successfully delayed extradition from the U.K. until May 2023 . Earlier this year, the case finally culminated in a lengthy trial in San Francisco that ended with Lynch’s acquittal of all charges against him in June , after he testified on his own behalf.

Also acquitted was Stephen Chamberlain, Autonomy’s former finance VP. But on Saturday — just two days before Lynch was caught in a boating catastrophe — Chamberlain was killed in a car accident , after he was struck while out for a run.

Lynch earned a Ph.D. in adaptive pattern recognition from Cambridge University. In 2006, he was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) honor for his work in the U.K.’s tech industry. After selling Autonomy, he founded an investment group focused on startups emerging from Cambridge University.

Who else was aboard?

Survivors include Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, along with Charlotte Golunski, who works at Invoke Capital, Lynch’s venture capital firm. Golunski was on the ship with her daughter, Sofia, who had just celebrated her first birthday. In an interview with La Repubblica , Golunski said she held her little girl as she floated in darkness, using all her strength to keep her arms up and prevent Sofia from drowning. Sophia’s father was also onboard and survived.

Ayla Ronald, a lawyer who worked on Lynch’s fraud case, and her partner also escaped the wreck. Other survivors include several crew members, including two women in their early 20s who were part of the ship’s staff.

Missing along with Lynch and Bloomer are Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, 18; Bloomer’s wife, Judy; a lawyer for Lynch named Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda, according to local newspaper Giornale di Sicilia .

Bloomer was a partner at Arthur Andersen for some 20 years, until 1994, according to his LinkedIn profile . He then led the financial services company Prudential before taking on a number of chairman roles, including at the legal services firm DWF.

Bloomer is also currently chairman of insurance company the Hiscox Group.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement sent to NPR. “Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation.”

What happened to the yacht?

The gathering took place aboard a massive sailing yacht called Bayesian — a term that, in mathematics and statistics, refers to probability and uncertainty. The yacht’s overall length is listed at 55.9 meters (183 feet).

The Bayesian was off the coast of Porticello when it was swamped by a violent storm before dawn on Monday morning. Numerous eyewitness accounts cited a waterspout — a highly localized spiraling storm that’s essentially a marine tornado. Around that time, the Bayesian was located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, according to the Marine Traffic tracking site.

The ship, which had 22 people aboard, sank. In the aftermath, 15 people were rescued, but one died and six were unaccounted for.

What about the rescue effort?

Helicopters and marine craft have been searching for any sign of the passengers, hoping to find more survivors. Sea and cave divers have also been part of the effort.

Italy’s fire brigade, Vigili del Fuoco, says it is working on a plan for divers to enter the sunken vessel. An initial attempt on Monday was cut short after divers were able to gain only limited access , citing furniture that blocked a passageway.

When asked about the possibility of finding any other survivors of the calamity, Comandante Vincenzo Zagarola of the Italian Coast Guard told radio station RTL 102.5 on Tuesday that given how much time has elapsed, it’s difficult to imagine a good outcome for the missing passengers. But, he said, the search will continue.

Martha at The Helm

Discover Martha Stewart’s passion for her Picnic Boat, Skylands II, her adventures with family and friends, and how she’s inspired others like Disney CEO Robert Iger to follow her lead aboard their own Hinckleys.

Martha Stewart is one of Hinckley’s most passionate Picnic Boat owners and captains. Speaking from her Seal Harbor, Maine estate, Stewart recalls how she bought her Picnic Boat, Skylands II, nearly 30 years ago, right after she bought her house, a 1920s masterpiece designed by architect Duncan Candler. “I bought the most beautiful house on Mount Desert Island, named Skylands — and I just had to have the most beautiful boat to go with the most beautiful house,” Stewart quips. “That’s why it’s called Skylands II. Plus, David Rockefeller Sr. told me that it was the only boat to get, and I care about fine workmanship.” You could say she’s the captain of her own ship.

stewart 37 yacht

Skylands II is also the only boat Martha has ever owned. “I learned how to drive it right from the get-go,” she says. “It was the perfect size for me. I remember driving it over to Seal Harbor initially. For some reason I was given not one, but two moorings at the Seal Harbor Yacht Club, so they had to accept me, even if it was questionable back then for a nouveau riche woman from New York. They couldn’t take my moorings away from me.” With an air of nostalgia, she adds, “It’s been so pleasant ever since. My grandchildren have gone to the sailing school and love going out on the boat—to Long Island, Maine—with me.”

stewart 37 yacht

So, what’s a typical day on the water like with Martha Stewart? “I enjoy hosting friends. We pack up a picnic, and literally go picnicking on my Picnic Boat. I like to explore, so we go to other islands and Lubec Harbor, which takes me about 4.5 hours to drive to. While there, we visit the summer house of the Roosevelts. And I’ve even gone to New York aboard Skylands II — my office used to be on 26th Street and I had a dock on the Hudson River, which was really fun.”

Stewart’s boat caught the attention of several friends who decided to follow her lead, including Disney CEO Robert Iger. “You would think my boat was made yesterday because it’s in such good shape and has withstood the test of time,” Stewart says. “But I also take good care of it. It’s kept safe in the harbor on a secure mooring that is checked every year and is fully winterized at Hinckley’s Southwest Harbor. My hull is a beautiful biscuit color, and the interiors feature orange upholstery and cherry wood trim. It’s very chic and comfortable.”

stewart 37 yacht

While she likes to bring a second captain along on her Skylands II outings in case she wants to take a break to entertain or relax, she has several trips on the 2024 docket, including one to Connecticut. “We can go across the sound to Sag Harbor, and Steven Gambrel has a really nice house there with a dock,” she says. “And I’m also planning a trip early this summer where several of my friends and I will take our Hinckleys up the Hudson River as far as we can go, overnighting and perhaps seeing Eric Schmidt and Annie Leibovitz along the way.”

This begs the question: Has her famous friend and creative collaborator Snoop Dogg joined her on Skylands II yet? “He hasn’t been to see me in Maine, but everyone wants him here. Boating this year is only going to get more fun.”

Rod Stewart's 8 Kids: All About His Sons and Daughters

Musician Rod Stewart is a father to Sarah, Kimberly, Sean, Ruby, Renee, Liam, Alastair Wallace and Aiden Patrick

Emma Kershaw is a contributing writer at PEOPLE. She has been working at PEOPLE since 2022. Her work has previously appeared in Cosmopolitan , Insider and Apartment Therapy.

stewart 37 yacht

Rod Stewart is well-known for his decades-long music career, but he is also the patriarch of a large, blended family.

The rock legend shares eight children with five mothers. He is a father to four daughters — Sarah, 60, Kimberly, 45, Ruby, 37, and Renee, 32 — and four sons — Sean, 43, Liam, 29, Alastair Wallace, 18, and Aiden Patrick, 13.

Stewart welcomed his eldest child, Sarah, with ex-girlfriend Susannah Boffey. He shares daughter Kimberly and son Sean with his ex-wife Alana Stewart , and daughter Ruby with his ex-girlfriend Kelly Emberg. While married to ex-wife Rachel Hunter, Stewart had two more children, Renee and Liam. He welcomed his two youngest kids, sons Alastair and Aiden, with his current wife, Penny Lancaster , whom he wed in 2007.

Stewart is also a grandfather to Kimberly's daughter, Delilah ; Ruby's son, Otis ; and Liam's son, Louie.

Rod Stewart/Instagram

Speaking about fatherhood in 2021, Stewart told PEOPLE that he has to be "several different fathers" due to the big age gaps between his kids.

"You really have to treat all of them as individuals with individual problems," he explained. "As a dad, I've learned to listen and not blow my top."

He added that "seeing all my kids and my wife with big smiles on their faces" is what "makes me happiest."

In May 2024, all eight of Stewart's children reunited at Liam's wedding to Nicole Artukovich in Croatia.

Here's everything to know about Rod Stewart's kids.

Sarah Streeter, 60

Stewart and his ex-girlfriend Susannah Boffey welcomed their daughter Sarah in November 1963. Sarah was raised by adoptive parents but formed a relationship with Stewart decades later.

In 2010, Stewart spoke about getting to know his eldest child on The Joy Behar Show . " She was put up for adoption when I was 17 or 18 , I think," he said of Sarah. "I was absolutely stone broke … and so she was put up for adoption."

The rocker continued, "Since her mum and dad have died, we've tried to come together and be close together, and it's working out pretty well. I never felt like I was her dad, because I didn't take her to school, change her nappies, there was no paternal thing there, but I'm trying."

Speaking to The Mirror in 2018, Sarah said: "Our relationship has evolved a lot in the last few years. It's taken its time because he's not just my dad, is he? He's a big star. So, of course, that makes it difficult. But over the years it has become much more relaxed and now he's just Dad to me."

She added: "You can't get away from the fact that he's Rod Stewart, the star, but when we're together I put that at the back of my mind."

Kimberly Stewart, 45

The Forever Young singer and ex-wife Alana Stewart welcomed daughter Kimberly on Aug. 20, 1979.

Following in her mother's footsteps, Kimberly is an actress and held roles in Lost Lake and Pacific Blue . She also starred in her own 10-episode reality TV show, Living with Kimberly Stewart , which followed her journey of finding a new roommate for her London home.

She's also a celebrity closet organizer , running her own luxury lifestyle, organizing and curation company, The Realm. Speaking to PEOPLE in 2021, Kimberly said that she was inspired to start her business after organizing her dad's Palm Beach home during quarantine.

"During the quarantine, I couldn't stand looking at the chaos going on in my dad's pantry and kitchen so I got to work," she explained. "I posted it on my Instagram for fun, and the response and feedback were phenomenal. I got direct messages from people asking me to come do their houses. At that point, the idea came to life, and I realized that I needed to reorganize closets professionally."

Kimberly has one daughter of her own — 11-year-old Delilah — whom she shares with actor Benicio Del Toro . The proud mom often shares sweet snaps of her child on Instagram, including several photos of Delilah posing with her grandpa Rod.

Alana K. Stewart Instagram

In August 2023, Alana celebrated her daughter's 44th birthday with an Instagram post. The proud mom shared sweet throwback photos, including a snap from Kimberly's first birthday in which Alana, Stewart and Kimberly posed in front of a cake. "Happy Birthday, my precious daughter. I love you more than you could ever know!" she wrote in the caption.

Sean Stewart, 43

Stewart and Alana's second child, Sean, was born on Sept. 1, 1980.

Like his elder sister Kimberly, Sean has also gone down the Hollywood route. He has starred in a few reality TV shows, including Stewarts & Hamiltons , and Sons of Hollywood alongside Randy Spelling. More recently, he's poured his heart and soul into getting his clothing company, Dirty Weekend , off the ground.

In February 2023, PEOPLE exclusively confirmed that Sean had married Jody Weintraub in an intimate ceremony in Las Vegas on Valentine's Day.

"Sean asked her while they were out to dinner at Catch. They married shortly after getting their marriage license at 10 p.m. at Little Church of the West," a source close to the couple explained. "They just went back to the hotel after. It was kind of like, 'Holy s---, we just got married,' but they were so, so excited and didn't regret one thing. Their relationship and connection is solid."

The couple eventually split in early 2024 . “It just wasn’t working with Jody,” a source told PEOPLE in July. “They tried but are in the process of divorcing and haven’t really been together for months.”

Sean is currently dating Beverly Hills-based model and facialist Julia Stambler.

Ruby Stewart, 37

Stewart's fourth child, daughter Ruby, was born on June 17, 1987. The British rocker shares Ruby with ex-girlfriend Kelly Emberg .

Ruby has inherited the music genes from her dad and has gone on to have a successful singing career. She was a part of The Sisterhood , a country music duo that disbanded in 2021 after the release of one album. Now, Ruby is a solo artist who has often performed alongside her dad. In June 2022, Stewart posted a video of himself and Ruby singing a rendition of his 1998 hit Ooh La La .

Also a model, Ruby has appeared in campaigns for the likes of Vogue Italia , Glamour Italia and The Nashville Edit .

In January 2023, Ruby started off the new year by announcing her first pregnancy .

"Out of all of the things that happened in 2022 you were by far the most beautiful…We can't wait to meet you…Baby boy Kalick coming in April… 🤍" she wrote in an Instagram post, along with a moving ultrasound image.

The same month, Ruby announced her engagement to partner Jake Kalick.

Stewart joined his ex-wife Emberg to celebrate their pregnant daughter at a baby shower in February 2023.

On Mother's Day 2023, Ruby announced Otis Stewart Kalick's birth on Instagram . "This love… unlike any other love I've ever known," she captioned a carousel post of baby photos. She also wrote that the baby was born on May 9 at 3:36 p.m. and weighed in at 8 lbs., 8 oz.

Renee Stewart, 32

The musician and ex-wife, New Zealand model Rachel Hunter, welcomed their daughter Renee on June 1, 1992. Renee was born in London and grew up in Los Angeles.

She returned to London for her studies, where she graduated from The London Contemporary Dance School with a bachelor's degree in 2016.

According to Renee's website , since graduating, she has worked as a dance artist and performed as a freelance artist at The Hong Kong International Dance Festival and Resolutions 2020 at The Place London.

Renee is also a yoga teacher and offers yoga, breath-work and meditation group classes, private classes and retreats around the world. In 2019, she completed her 500-hour yoga teacher training in India.

Liam Stewart, 29

Stewart and Hunter's second child together, son Liam, was born on Sept. 5, 1994.

Liam is a professional ice hockey player and has played for the Spokane Chiefs, Alaska Aces, and, most recently, the Milton Keynes Lightning as a forward.

In May 2023, Liam and his then-girlfriend, Nicole Artukovich, welcomed a son named Louie Mark Roderick Stewart. The couple got engaged shortly after and eventually wed in May 2024 . All of Liam's siblings, along with his parents, attended the nuptials in Dubrovnik, Croatia .

Alastair Wallace Stewart, 18

On Nov. 27, 2005, Stewart and Penny Lancaster welcomed their first son — and Stewart's seventh child — Alastair Wallace.

Alastair is close to his dad, and the two often pose together for Instagram snaps. Not immune to a cringe-worthy moment or two, the musician previously told PEOPLE that he had a funny conversation with Alastair when he sat him down to talk about sex .

"My 15-year-old is dating girls, so I had to give him a sex lesson. I just told him what he should and shouldn't do, but he's on top of it," he revealed at the time. "He was like, 'Dad, I've got the internet. I know everything,' "

The father of eight couldn't be prouder of the now 18-year-old, who is finding his footing within the modeling industry, having starred in a billboard campaign for luxury clothing brand Palm Angels. The images adorned buildings across Milan in June 2022.

"Love @palmangels and that my boy 'wears it well' #fashion #streetwear #milano," the singer wrote in an Instagram post.

Aiden Patrick Stewart, 13

Stewart and Lancaster's second child, Aiden Patrick , was born on Feb. 16, 2011. A few months after Aiden's birth, Stewart told PEOPLE, "I'm trying to make more time now that I've carved out my career. I want to enjoy my kids . We're all planning a massive vacation somewhere. It's hard to get them all together because they are all off in different directions. But I am so proud of them."

In December 2022, Stewart opened up about Aiden's health scare when he was rushed to the hospital after "going blue and unconscious" while playing a youth soccer game.

"We thought my boy had a heart attack," Stewart told FourFourTwo. "He was going blue and was unconscious until he calmed down. It was scary, but it turned out to be a panic attack."

"The lad wanted to do well, pulled on the Hoops in Scotland for his dad," he added.

The Stuart 37 is equipped with a finn keel. The finn keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel.
