Karl Stachel is no mug when it comes to competitive IOM racing and he also has some talent with boat building.
Nighthawk proved to be up with the pace when it finished 9th in a NZ Ranking regatta held recently at Gulf harbour
The IOM class was intended to result in boats “capable of being built by non-expert builders, either from a kit or from scratch, or inexpensively by a commercial builder, without being at a disadvantage in terms of performance when compared to yachts built using an unlimited amount of time and other resources.”
This Nighthawk design is the outcome of a long project to meet this goal.
The key to simple construction is to build the hull out of plywood panels. It is available here as a full kitset which includes all the laser-cut ply for the hull, deck and interior, plus all the other fittings which are permanently attached (eyebolts, mast-post etc).
The hull and foredeck are 1.2mm birch ply which has water-proof glue and a high-quality finish. All other parts are 1.8mm hoop pine.
A typical labour time is 20-30 hours, with the total time quite a bit longer waiting for epoxy to set.
You will need to buy some readily available materials like epoxy, varnish, sandpaper etc. To go sailing you will also need all the electrics, running and fixed rigging, appendages, rig & sails.
Appendages set
Note that there is also a ‘with appendages’ version which includes the fin and rudder + rudder arm and has the fincase and bulb already made to fit the fin, and the bulb at the right weight.
is backordered. We will ship it separately in 10 to 15 days.

Discounted Packages for DSNA IOM Electronics / Batteries!
Alioth Licensed owners have full access to the forum at https://aliothiom.com for resources, and guides on building, finishing and coating the hull sections, rigging the boat, and getting a competitive IOM on the water racing!
Please keep in mind however 3D printed boats will not hold up under long periods in high heat, especially darker colors! When not on the water make sure to store under cover, and out of the sun! Our design can accomodate several different types of servos & winches, but we recommend our ALIOTH Electronics Package Which includes our multi-voltage/ digital/ coreless, SW22 Sail Winch (w/ 40mm Drum) & DFGMD1 Micro Servo, which help reduce overall weight. These servos are both super high torque, high quality , and battle tested for the IOM class. We also offer complete deck and internal hardware kits as an add on option. Currently, complete keel fin, rudder fin and Ballast must be sourced separately directly from RC Sailing Labs. Other fins and bulbs can be fitted to the boat kit with printed adapters available on request. We also have lightweight, reliable LiPo & Life Batteries, chargers available . Rigs and sails can be sourced worldwide from many different dealers, currently DSNA does not carry these item or build boats turnkey! In an era of radio sailing when high end competeitive boats can take years to get on the water, the ALIOTH IOM is a fantastic, low cost alternative to enter the international level of high end radio sailing!

The standard rig pack contents.
Pack contains spars, rigging and fittings sufficient to make one A rig with the following features: General features: • comprehensive plan and step by step instructions • anodised mast material - 7075 T6 grade - natural (silver) or black • mast or no mast as chosen • anodised, stainless steel and/or nickel plated fittings as appropriate • headsail boom counterbalance weight • gooseneck/kickingstrap unit is simple to fit to mast • faired, clip on spreaders • flexible 7 strand rigging wire for standing rigging • Dyneema rigging cord for running rigging • self locking rigging screws, fastenings and terminations
The better boat suppliers provide rigging plans specific to their designs. Always use the dimensions in those in preference to the dimensions given in our rig plans. Then the rig tuning instructions given by the boat's designer will be relevant to the rigs you have built.
If you require the kicking strap to be extended so that it is easier to operate on boats where the gooseneck is sunk low in the boat, please choose the 'kicking strap extended' option.
Consider having the mast cut into two pieces and supplied with a joint piece to reduce the cost of packing and carriage significantly. Alternatively, consider having additional mast tubes sent for the same packing and carriage charge for use as spares or for friends.
You will need the following materials to supplement the pack; cyano glue, tape for limit marks (measurement bands).
DRILL BLOCKS
Make assembly of rig and boom kits easier by using the drill blocks (to aid drilling holes in the correct place and attitude) and boom fitting assembly block (to add fittings at correct attitude). See DB-BOOM , DB-MAST-110 and BFAB .

T he rise in general popularity of the IOM class of R/C sailboat since its conception has been quite remarkable, with more and more model boat enthusiasts enjoying building and sailing them at all levels of enjoyment. Whilst increasing numbers of the top-level boats are offered as part or completely built hulls by a number of outlets worldwide, there remains a strong demand for straightforward to build and sail designs for the newcomer, which will provide a guide as to best timber build practice and thus keep the entry-level cost to a minimum.

What’s in a Laser or CNC Cut Wood Pack? – A CNC or laser cut wood pack contains most, if not all, of the intricately shaped parts shown on the plan, which would be difficult or time-consuming to cut out by hand. It does not contain any sheet or strip wood, which you will need to buy separately. Alternatively, you can purchase an Additional Wood Pack, if available. Our Laser or CNC Cut Wood Packs only contain balsa, ply and lite ply and do not include other materials that may be required to complete the model, such as hardwoods, metals and GRP sheets.
What’s in a Short Kit? – A short kit usually contains, where available, the plan, the laser/CNC cut wood pack, additional wood pack, canopy, cowl or any other available Glass Fibre or plastic moulded items.

Is the hull designed to be printed in vase mode.
Yes. Vase mode guarantees good layer adhesion and the best surface quality, and it reduces a lot the printing time.
We recommend PLA+ or PLA.
PLA is stiff, has low shrinkage and is easy to print. The disadvantage is a low glass transition temperature.
Darker colours warp on direct sunlight as the temperature of the surface builds up fast. To avoid this, use bright clear colours.
Don’t leave printed parts in a car on hot summer days, as the temperature can easily rise above 50°C.

'THETIS' (Greek goddess of water) a new design in 2013 and having been on trials a season prior. The design performs well and is a very stable yacht which points well and is also fast on the run. She handles well in most conditions encountered and can maintain position with her top rig until wind conditions really stiffen. When beating barely noticable weather helm is an aid to maintenance of a steady course. Hands off sailing shows her stable nature and she points closely. The hull shape pays dividends in the way she is quick to accelerate from a stand.
FEATURES - quality moulded white GRP hull ready trimmed to deck level, white GRP deck which is ready trimmed to act as a template for hull shape, HD carbon-fibre fin & rudder and ready made keel fin/mast box. Rig kits include Nylet scrim racing sails, and a comprehensive deck fittings pack is supplied. Semi-kits (without rig or lead ballast) are available, see price list. Kit options can be found in the price list in section J. GRP hulls are moulded in white. Racing sails in recing scrim are made to order with corner 'patches' to the colour of your choice (see our range of Poly colours). Kits come with a fully illustrated stage by stage guide to building (normally sent as a pdf file). DIMENSIONS. LOA (Length) 1 metre apx. beam 228mm. Building work to be done, and recommended tools: fin box and rudder post to be built in, and timber inwales and cross beams to accept deck, radio/winch platform to be constructed and fitted prior to fitting deck. You will need either a bench or a workmate, a small hobby vice, a hand drill or electronic drill, drill bits between 1mm and 2mm, a small hand file, a junior metal saw, small clamps suitable for use on glassfibre parts, and various glues and adhesives, epoxy etc (see building guide). Please note that we only have a very small quantity remaining, hulls are white and decks a light powder blue. Yacht kits must be collected, we are unable to pack for despatch (we have no stock remaining of boxes).

It is my honour as one of the youngest IOMICA Executive members to address you on behalf of our newly elected Executive Committee. Like you, my passion and commitment for this brilliant global class have only strengthened with my growing participation. It is fitting having this address come from one of our youngest members, as more than 50% of our electorate is new to the Executive Board. So, to initiate this address, I would simply like to start by pausing to thank each and every one of you. Thank you for your support and participation in a radio sailing class that has origins dating back to 1958. What an accomplishment! This lengthy tradition has produced some amazing sailboat designs and memorable events year after year. The shared passion for IOM has generated a global camaraderie that unites us all. Recognizing this, we would like to acknowledge some remarkable individuals for their stalwart commitment and personal sacrifice in promoting our IOM Class and the infrastructure behind it.
We must congratulate Mr. Fred Rocha for his eight years of service as the IOM ICA Chairman and acknowledge everything he accomplished. His perpetual enthusiasm and inclusivity are traits that have greatly benefitted our class. He aspired to improve both our internal and external communication, promote the development of our class in new territories, and openly embrace new concepts and ideas. Fred was very generous with his time and support of all our organizational requirements, and worked tirelessly in this pursuit. Congratulations also need to be extended to our newly elected IOM ICA Chairman, Mr. Olivier Cohen. Additional changes in the Executive resulted in the position VC – Technical is going from Mr. Jeff Byerley to Mr. Robert Grubiša, VC – InfoComms passes from Mr. Pedro Egea to Josip Marasović, and the position of Treasurer formally transferring from Mr. David Turton to Mr. Sean Wallis. Pedro Egea deserves special recognition, as he’s tirelessly served our group with IT and “common sense” support for now eleven years — you are a genuine rockstar!! VC Measurement position is vacant, but we wanted also to congratulate Mr. Lawrie Neish, a true veteran who was helping us for around 11 years!! Gentlemen, you all deserve our heartfelt thanks for your service, and be assured we will raise a glass on your behalf.
As COVID continues to be a present challenge for all of us, I’d like to conclude this greeting with a note of enthusiasm . Always remember why the IOM Class is held in such high esteem in so many different countries, surviving the test of time! No matter how technologically advanced and exceptional IOM sailboats become in future, we will always rely on an overwhelming and continued desire to explore all facets and possibilities to improve performance and everyone’s experience in the end. We need to continue to push our limits in all sectors of this class, and convey that information in an open and democratic fashion. This voice needs to be expressed beyond just our annual vote, but vocalized at every race, regatta, start, and buoy rounding, and literally every metre moving forward. Whether you are sailing at a top international regatta or having a twilight club race with friends, you are all part of this active global IOM family . We are all facing challenges and uncertainty in our daily lives, but we do not have to question our passion and commitment to IOM. Through your individual activities and support, each of you is responsible for helping make this class what it is now and will ultimately become. Our growth and transformation evolve only when you participate , experiment , and continue to explore , so your engagement is crucial to our success in the future. We look forward to seeing you at future regattas, active in our forums and chats, social media and in photos. The year 2021 is at the very end, but we are just getting started, so let us all continue our story together .
– Josip Marasović, new VC InfoComms

I'm a member of a thriving RC sailing group at Whitefriars SC in the Cotswolds. We have a fleet of 15 IOMs that race every Tuesday during the year as well as a similar sized fleet of DF95 that race on a Monday.
Five years ago I came to RC sailing from sailing full size yachts and regret that I didn’t try it 20 years earlier. I started out with a 25 year old IOM, built by Squire Kay, that was well past its best and really not a good start. I then bought a second hand IOM by Barry Chisam, an ASBO, which I used to learn how to sail. I then bought a new Sedici, an Italian boat with an impressive pedigree. I had to wait around 14 months which was less than ideal.
As an engineer, I’ve always been interested in innovations and became aware of the potential for 3D printing around 12 years ago. Around 3 years ago I began to explore the idea of using it to print IOM boats. I was fortunate to be in a position to place a order for a Sedici but had to wait 14 months for delivery. From the placing of an order with the large, prominent manufacturers, it can take anywhere from 4 months to over 2 years to get the boat into the hands of the owner and the costs can easily spiral towards and in some cases way beyond £3000
Using 3D printing, I believe, it is quite possible to shorten the order/build process to just a few weeks and get many more IOM yachts into the hands of skippers at price that is much more reasonable.
If you want to look at the whole subject the best site to start with is https://3dprintedradioyachts.com/. There are even some free designs there for you to print yourself.I spent many hour on the site and cannot commend the author highly enough.
Having looked at several designs for 3d printing I printed a few for testing and while they might be wonderful designs they all had flaws. Some were:
Eventually I settled on the Alioth IOM design from Juan Egea. Juan is a very experienced IOM sailor and has done well on the world stage. His Alioth Design, in its second iteration, is a good performer in all conditions and has the results to back it up.
The Alioth may look familiar but the painstaking work Juan has done to produce a strong and light hull is what marks it out. It is printed in a continuous spiral which is capable of producing an outstanding surface finish which really needs very little finishing. We know of several boats that have been printed and put on the water without any surface treatment. The innovative thing about the design is the way Juan has kept the weight out of the fore and aft ends and the strength in the centre.
For the moment the best way to contact me is to use the contact form on this website.
Fin’s
We are working on several fin designs. Parallel, tapered and wine glass forms. All use the same head fitting and will be available very shortly. As fins are critical to the performance of any boat we are now supplying Dave Creed fins and rudders as an option.

The Ellipsis… IOM represents a different approach to what is now “conventional chine” boats,
The truth is chines do not do what designers say they do. They do not “grip” the water or generate lift, or stop the boat going sideways in any way.
The main application of a chine on modern IOM’s is to easily allow a boat to have tumble home aft by separating the topside shape from the bottom shape. This aft tumblehome In combination with much fuller bow sections, reduces the “in out wedges” of a hull which stops the hull from trimming bow down when heeled. This hull “balance” , allows the hull when heeled to sail in a straight line rather than curve to windward and allows the foils to stay at an optimum angle of a attack without further skewing the hull. This makes the boat easier to sail and reduces drag.
Other effects of the chine are the ability of a designer to make the stern sections flatter than they otherwise would be and gives the hull a volume bump just above the waterline increasing initial form stability and at the bow increasing acceleration. The chine may also allow a cleaner separation of the water flow aft at speed, but this is debatable.
The Ellipsis… approach is to remove the chine completely but to retain the volume distribution and excellent hull balance of a chine boat. This produces a much simpler and easier to produce hull in both glass and wood. The Ellipsis… is very well balanced upwind and can be trimmed to give a negative feel right though the useful range of heel angles. When running the Ellipsis’s full bow gives the boat excellent nosediving prevention ability and exceptional acceleration in gusts.
The Ellipsis… being narrower on the waterline and has less immersed hull surface than many chine boats. The deck is slightly wider allowing a wider stay base and better rig control. The flat deck with a raised “bubble” section allows the jib foot to be very low in the boat.
The Ellipsis… is also unlike many chine boats, and very pretty boat .
