Originally built in 1956 by J&G Forbes near Fraserburgh, Scotland, Radiant Star spent her first 38 years working as a Herring Drifter in the North Sea fishing fleet 6 days a week off the craggy shoals of Scotland.  In 1994, Radiant Star was slated to be chain sawed, wrecked as part of a government buy-out of the fleet. Her current owner, who is a Scottish American, knew he wanted to convert a ship of this type and he travelled to Scotland to identify candidate vessels from this fleet.  After shortlisting 7 and visiting all of these he finally selected Radiant Star.  With much local knowledge to ground him, he focused on the J&G Forbes construction, and was finally won over by the graceful sheer line and the large 'fish hold' forward, which would accommodate the apartment he intended to build into the vessel. Standing on the blustery quay in the Shetland Islands, he shook hands with the fisherman who had owned her since 1964 and the sturdy trawler began her conversion into a yacht.

The new owners asked that the yacht be delivered to Fraserburgh, where they worked with the local talent to build a new galley into the large hold forward. They also did some simple preparations for the long voyage back to Seattle. They then took the yacht up the Themes River to London where they found many refurbished antiques from the local shops which were eventually built into the vessel. These include a large dining table, book case, display cabinet, officers desk and chairs which were all items salvaged from steam ships and cruise liners of the Victorian age. These beautiful items with their plaques are now built in place as part of the beautiful interior fit out aboard Radiant Star.

The new Owners, with some trusty friends, cruised the yacht home, rounding Cape Horn  in January of 1995 and arriving in Anacortes in April, having cruised 18,000 nm and 2300 engine hours.  It was there that the real work on the conversation began!  The original 3" decks were repaired as needed and re-faired. They were then rubberized before a new 2" fir deck was laid. The bottom was refastened with 3,000 huge 5" square spikes. The bulkwarks were replaced with mahogany and capped with purple heart, much of which had to be steam bent to the required curve. All of the exterior work was done by Guemes Island boatbuilder David Hartford and his crew. David Bass did the interior.

Radiant Star has been featured in Passagemaker Magazine (Spring 1999), in Wooden Boat (July 2006), as well as in the prestigious publication by the Cruising Club of America (CCA).  She has been voted Best in Show and Peoples Choice at recent Trawlerfest events.

"Radiant Star" has never looked better. Currently (Spring of 2014), "Radiant Star" is in excellent condition and shines from the tops of her gleaming purple heart teak caprails to her freshly painted keel. Out of the water in August 2013,  as she is every year, this yacht has been consistently maintained and shows knowledgeable owners attentions. "It is not expensive to do, it is just regular."  Refastened below the waterline in 2005.  Ready for your cruising adventure!

  • Windstar Star Legend Review: My Small-Ship Cruising Experience

The Windstar Star Legend is part of the 180° From Ordinary experience. That’s the focus of Windstar, and my sailing on the Windstar Star Legend was an extraordinary experience.

A large white cruise ship named Star Legend, part of the Windstar fleet, docked at a port, with two individuals in safety vests walking on the adjacent pier.

My Windstar Star Legend Review

Two people stand on the platform of the docked Windstar yacht, overlooking the water. The yacht's stern is prominently visible, with a flag flying above.

Windstar Star Legend, previously Seabourn Pride , underwent a refurbishment in 2021. As part of the $250 Million Star Plus Initiative, Star Legend was stretched by 84 feet. This all-suite ship added 50 new suites ship.

Due to its size, the Star Legend stops at many smaller ports that larger ships cannot visit. My trip circumnavigated the British Isles, visiting Dublin and Belfast. The ship sailed from Edinburgh and finished in London, right at the London Tower Bridge.

Our ports included:

  • Dun Laoghaire
  • Isles of Scilly

Arriving in Leith a day early, we hopped on a double-decker tour bus to explore Edinburgh before starting our cruise.

With just six passenger decks, Star Legend is simple to navigate, with no distance being far. It’s simple to get between venues without getting lost or spending time trying to figure out where you are. There are elevators at both ends of the ship, but it must be noted that all don’t go to the ship’s upper decks.

A well-lit hotel room with a queen-sized bed, a white sofa, two armchairs, a small coffee table, and a framed photograph on the wall. Glass doors with curtains lead to a balcony—a cozy space perfect for reading your Windstar Review or planning your next voyage on the Star Legend.

I sailed with my husband, and our cabin, Star Ocean View Suite 444, was ideal for our 10-night cruise on the Atlantic Archipelago Adventures voyage.

Upon entering our stateroom, I confirmed that we had made a good choice by sailing Windstar, as this brand was a new experience for us. The room’s layout brought back memories of a long-ago cruise on Seabourn Pride .

Both of us remarked about the size and comfort of the stateroom. I wondered if I would have preferred the bed near the entry, but after getting accustomed to the room, I knew this was the best arrangement. I recalled a ship designer’s comment that you don’t go directly into the bedroom when you enter a home.

My concern that I wouldn’t be able to see out the window from the living area quickly dissolved. If the bed had been closer to the front door, we wouldn’t have had to squeeze past the foot of the bed to see the view or enjoy the comforts of the living room.

This stateroom cannot be converted to a two-twin configuration in the SS1 category. However, it worked for us, and we found the layout conducive to our traveling style.

A modern lounge with multiple sofas, armchairs, a central coffee table, and a chandelier. A large TV adorns the back wall, while a desk area sits in the rear of the room. This stylish space is reminiscent of a Star Legend suite—an ideal setting for an in-depth Windstar review.

With plenty of outlets in the bedroom area and USB ports, we appreciated the thought that went into the design of this cabin.

Across from the bed, the long vanity/table contained European and North American outlets and USB ports. At the vanity end of the space, there were large drawers. Toward the desk end of the counter, there was a fabric bench that fit under the desk. It was nice to have ample space to recharge electronics. A television hung above the vanity area of the counter.

Separating the living area from the bedroom, a solid drape was pulled out to divide the large suite into two private areas if desired. We had an inviting sofa with a coffee table in the suite’s living area. With such a configuration, we didn’t hesitate to order room service meals on several occasions. Opposite the couch, two additional upholstered chairs provided a comfortable seating alternative.

In the living area, where carafes of fresh water were provided daily, there was also a minibar equipped with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic refreshments.

Near the main entry to the cabin, a walk-in closet provides plenty of space for hanging clothes.

Modern hotel bar area with marble flooring, tall leather bar stools, overhead lighting, and potted plants, reminiscent of a scene from a Star Legend review.

A small stand has drawers for extra storage. One of the drawers hides a safe. Triangular-shaped shelfs work for additional storage. In the cabin are life preservers, waffle cloth bathrobes, and slippers.

The bathroom is right next to the closet. To navigate this modern and updated bathroom, one must step up into the toilet, which is typical of most ship bathrooms. Nobody needs a horn.

Two sinks make sharing the space easy, but there isn’t upper shelf space for the sink near the shower. A long shelf stretches below the sink the entire length of the vanity. Toiletries include L’Occitane products, and it is certainly nice to have various options.

Having one toiletry for each function instead of one pump liquid dispensing a product that works as body wash, hair wash, and who-knows-what-else is a real luxury.

The long shower has grab bars, a rain shower, and a handheld shower. The fluffy white shower rug gave the bathroom a homey feel and a soft landing for my feet.

A woman in a yellow shirt accepts a plate of food from an unseen person while sitting at a dining table with others. Several glasses of wine and plates of food are on the table, reminiscent of the fine dining reviews you might read about on a Windstar cruise like the Star Legend.

Star Legend offers a surprising number of dining options for a small ship. The choices of casual, grill, fine dining, and experimental will please the pickiest of guests.

The Yacht Club is a library-like gathering place with beverages and takeaway choices. Grabbing something and enjoying the view from the wall of windows is the perfect way to start the day.

This is the buffet offering that opens for lunch and breakfast. There is no dinner buffet on Star Legend. I’m not a fan of buffets, but I tried this option for breakfast and lunch. It’s possible to get eggs to order along with other traditional breakfast offerings. Food is scattered throughout the space, including in areas that require climbing down stairs.

For lunch, in addition to choosing from the many buffet choices, you can also get the cooked-to-order dish of the day or a burger or hotdog from Star Grill. You can order these from Veranda, or you can sit out at Star Grill and enjoy these and other dishes at this outdoor venue.

Star Grill

Outdoor dining area on a deck with wooden tables, glassware, and striped placemats. Cushioned chairs and glass panels enhance the candlelit ambiance overlooking the ocean under a canopy—a setting truly deserving of a glowing review aboard the Star Legend by Windstar.

Head to this casual outdoor space if you are looking for traditional grilled and BBQ foods under the guise of Steven Raichlen. There’s an excellent selection of international foods as well.

Elegantly set tables with white tablecloths, folded napkins, red roses, and wine glasses adorn the sophisticated dining area. A wine rack is seen in the background, reminiscent of a Star Legend review highlight.

This is a traditional main dining room in an elegant setting. Dinner is the only meal served at this open-seating venue. The menu changed daily, and there were vegetarian options. Classics like fish, chicken, and beef are always on the menu.

Veranda transforms into a more intimate space in the evening, becoming a unique dining experience. While dining outside in warm weather is possible, we found it a tad chilly to enjoy the outdoor area. We opted to sit in more intimate side areas of the space and enjoyed the low lighting and quiet atmosphere. Be sure to explore the gourmet salts that come with your meal.

A modern restaurant with neatly set tables, red and white chairs, warm lighting, colorful artwork, and a visible kitchen area that could easily be featured in a Star Legend review.

A specialty restaurant included in the fare, this restaurant by Anthony Sasso ranks as my favorite. Cuadro 44 describes itself as an eclectic Spanish restaurant. Tapas-style foods are meant for sharing. The tomato bread offered as an appetizer tantalizes the taste buds. Although a seemingly simple appetizer, the complex flavors made me return for more.

The tapas menu includes pork legs raised on acorns, anchovies, paella croquettes, and octopus. Main dishes include cod, chicken, lamb chops, and more. The menu designates the dishes’ origin in Spain.

The open kitchen allows for watching the chefs in action. Several seats are available facing the cooking area. The chefs’ orchestrated roles, primarily done in silence, added to the enjoyment of our meal.

With only 36 seats, Cuadro 44 requires reservations, as does Candles.

Officially, guests may only dine here and at Candles once, but especially if the ship isn’t full, it’s worth checking to see if space might be available.

Room service is always available with its menu. Moreover, anything offered on the Amphora menu could also be ordered through room service.

Entertainment

A group of people dancing on a wooden deck at night, illuminated by colorful lights, sets the perfect scene for an unforgettable Windstar experience.

Entertainment on Star Legend is primarily self-directed. Small groups sing or play for evening entertainment. During the day, trivia and cooking demonstrations gather guests together.

The ship has an open bridge policy, and it is worth a trip up top to see how it works.  All Windstar ships now have  Starlink high-speed internet if you need to stay connected .

Public Areas and Watering Holes

People relax on lounge chairs on a Windstar cruise ship deck under clear skies. The nearest person holds a red book, and the ocean is visible in the background.

In  Star Legend , most public areas also have  watering holes. Yacht Club on the upper deck offers a relaxing space for a snack, reading, or enjoying the view.

Outside at the Star Grill are sofas and chairs to enjoy conversation while enjoying a drink from the bar.

Back inside the ship, Compass Rose serves drinks while guests enjoy pre-dinner music. Demonstrations and other larger gatherings take place in the spacious lounge.

Fitness Center and Spa

The spa and fitness center prioritize wellness and fitness. Guests pay no additional fee for access to the sauna and thermal loungers. The fitness center may be smaller, but it offers everything guests need for a satisfying workout, including a pool and hot tub for post-workout relaxation.

While the sports deck has water toys, it was not open during our sailing. But in warmer weather, it’s something worthy of exploration.

Closing Thoughts

A man and a woman sit at a table on the Star Legend's deck, smiling and enjoying drinks under a clear blue sky with an ocean view.

Sailing on a new brand creates excellent expectations, excitement, and trepidation. How closely do the brochure and marketing reflect the experience? Could I survive for ten nights? Being on a ship and sailing guarantees my survival, but would it be an enjoyable experience?

From the minute I set foot on Star Legend , I knew I would be pretty happy to relax in these surroundings for the entire cruise. The space, the service, the food, and the serenity of Star Legend provide the perfect experience for those seeking a leisure trip. But, I immediately recognized this as an excellent opportunity for anybody working remotely.

Then again, the ports are so attractive that they could distract those working on the road. And while this would be a case where I sail for the ship, the ports of call are quite the draw—new ports interspersed with familiar favorites added intrigue to the itinerary.

Great food, like-minded cruisers, and comfortable surroundings made our Windstar yacht experience 180° from ordinary! I can’t wait to try their sailing ships.

Be sure to check the Windstar sailings . Searching may yield a luxury sailing at a competitive price.

Lynch Yacht Sinking Off Sicily Proves as Baffling as It Is Tragic

As bodies were recovered, the authorities and experts wondered how a $40 million, stable and secure vessel could have sunk so quickly.

  • Share full article

A diver in an orange jumpsuit suit and crews in gray shirts and red trousers hoist remains in a blue body bag onto a boat, as others in reflector uniforms stand nearby.

By Emma Bubola and Michael J. de la Merced

Emma Bubola reported from Porticello, Italy, and Michael J. de la Merced from London.

Two months after being cleared in a bruising legal battle over fraud charges, the British tech mogul Mike Lynch celebrated his freedom with a cruise. He invited his family, friends and part of his legal team on board his luxury sailing yacht, a majestic 180-foot vessel named Bayesian after the mathematical theorem around which he had built his empire.

On Sunday night, after a tour of the Gulf of Naples, including Capri, and volcanic islands in the Eolian archipelago, the boat anchored half a mile off the Sicilian coast in Porticello, Italy. It chose a stretch of water favored by the Phoenicians thousands of years ago for its protection from the mistral wind and, in more recent times, by the yachts of tech billionaires. The boat was lit “like a Christmas tree,” local residents said, standing out against the full moon.

But about 4 a.m., calamity unfolded. A violent and fast storm hit the area with some of the strongest winds locals said they had ever felt. Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman, said he saw a flare pierce the darkness shortly after 4.

Minutes later, the yacht was underwater. Only dozens of cushions from the boat’s deck and a gigantic radar from its mast floated on the surface of the sea, fishermen said.

In all, 22 people were on board, 15 of whom were rescued. Six bodies — five passengers and the ship’s cook — had been recovered by Thursday afternoon, including that of Mr. Lynch, an Italian government official said, adding that the search was continuing for his daughter.

It was a tragic and mystifying turn of events for Mr. Lynch, 59, who had spent years seeking to clear his name and was finally inaugurating a new chapter in his life. Experts wondered how a $40 million yacht, so robust and stable could have been sunk by a storm near a port within minutes.

“It drives me insane,” said Giovanni Costantino, the chief executive of the Italian Sea Group, which in 2022 bought the company, Perini, that made the Bayesian. “Following all the proper procedures, that boat is unsinkable.”

The aura of misfortune only deepened when it emerged that Stephen Chamberlain, 52, a former vice president of finance for Mr. Lynch’s former company and a co-defendant in the fraud case, was killed two days earlier, when he was hit by a car while jogging near his house in England.

Since June, the two men had been in a jubilant mood. A jury in San Francisco had acquitted both on fraud charges that could have sent them to prison for two decades. There were hugs and tears, and they and their legal teams went for a celebratory dinner party at a restaurant in the city, said Gary S. Lincenberg, a lawyer for Mr. Chamberlain.

The sea excursion was meant as a thank-you by Mr. Lynch to those who had helped him in his legal travails. Among the guests was Christopher J. Morvillo, 59, a scion of a prominent New York family of lawyers who had represented Mr. Lynch for 12 years. He and his wife, Neda, 57, were among the missing.

So, too, was Jonathan Bloomer, 70, a veteran British insurance executive who chaired Morgan Stanley International and the insurer Hiscox.

The body of the ship’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, was recovered. All the other crew members survived. Among them was Leo Eppel, 19, of South Africa, who was on his first yacht voyage working as a deck steward, said a friend, who asked not to be identified.

Since the sinking, the recovery effort and investigation have turned the tiny port town of Porticello, a quiet enclave where older men sit bare-chested on balconies, into what feels like the set of a movie.

Helicopters have flown overhead. Ambulances have sped by with the sirens blaring. The Coast Guard has patrolled the waters off shore, within sight of a cordoned-off dock that had been turned into an emergency headquarters.

On Wednesday afternoon, a church bell tolled after the first body bag was loaded into an ambulance, a crowd watching in silence.

The survivors were sheltering in a sprawling resort near Porticello, with a view of the shipwreck spot, and had so far declined to comment.

Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said that the yacht had most likely been hit by a fierce “down burst” — when air generated within a thunderstorm descends rapidly — or by a waterspout , similar to a tornado over water.

He added that his agency had put out rough-sea warnings the previous evening, alerting sailors about storms and strong winds. Locals said the winds “felt like an earthquake.”

Mr. Costantino, the boat executive, said the yacht had been specifically designed for having a tall mast — the second-tallest aluminum mast in the world. He said the Bayesian was an extremely safe and secure boat that could list even to 75 degrees without capsizing.

But he said that if some of the hatches on the side and in the stern, or some of the deck doors, had been open, the boat could have taken on water and sunk. Standard procedure in such storms, he said, is to switch on the engine, lift the anchor and turn the boat into the wind, lowering the keel for extra stability, closing doors and gathering the guests in the main hall inside the deck.

12 guests occupied the yacht’s six cabins. There were also 10 crew members.

Open hatches, doors and cabin windows could have let in water during a storm, according to the manufacturer.

By Veronica Penney

The New York Times attempted to reach the captain, James Cutfield, who had survived, for comment through social media, his brother and the management company of the yacht (which did not hire the crew), but did not make contact.

So far none of the surviving crew members have made a public statement about what happened that night.

Fabio Genco, the director of Palermo’s emergency services, who treated some of the survivors, said that the victims had recounted feeling as if the boat was being lifted, then suddenly dropped, with objects from the cabins falling on them.

The Italian Coast Guard said it had deployed a remotely operated vehicle that can prowl underwater for up to seven hours at a depth of more than 980 feet and record videos and images that they hoped would help them reconstruct the dynamics of the sinking. Such devices were used during the search and rescue operations of the Titan vessel that is believed to have imploded last summer near the wreckage of the Titanic.

After rescuers broke inside the yacht, they struggled to navigate the ropes and many pieces of furniture cluttering the vessel, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for Italy’s national firefighter corps.

Finally, as of Thursday morning, they had managed to retrieve all but one of the missing bodies, and hopes of finding the missing person alive were thin. “Can a human being be underwater for two days?” Mr. Cari asked.

What was certain was that Mr. Lynch’s death was yet another cruel twist of fate for a man who had spent years seeking to clear his name.

He earned a fortune in technology and was nicknamed Britain’s Bill Gates. But for more than a decade, he had been treated as anything but a respected tech leader.

He was accused by Hewlett-Packard, the American technological pioneer that had bought his software company, Autonomy, for $11 billion, of misleading it about his company’s worth. (Hewlett-Packard wrote down the value of the transaction by about $8.8 billion, and critics called it one of the worst deals of all time .) He had been increasingly shunned by the British establishment that he sought to break into after growing up working-class outside London.

He was extradited to San Francisco to face criminal charges, and confined to house arrest and 24-hour surveillance on his dime. In a townhouse in the Pacific Heights neighborhood — with security people he jokingly told associates were his “roommates” — he spent his mornings talking with researchers whom he funded personally on new applications for artificial intelligence. Afterward, he devoted hours to discussing legal strategy with his team.

Despite his persistent claims of innocence, even those close to Mr. Lynch had believed his odds of victory were slim. Autonomy’s chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted in 2018 of similar fraud charges and spent five years in prison.

During Mr. Lynch’s house arrest, his brother and mother died. His wife, Angela Bacares, frequently flew over from England, and she became a constant presence in the San Francisco courtroom during the trial.

After he was finally acquitted, Mr. Lynch had his eye on the future. “I am looking forward to returning to the U.K. and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” he said.

ROME (Reuters) - Divers scouring the wreck of the luxury yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily have found the bodies of two of the six passengers who were missing, a source close to the matter said on Wednesday.

The boat, owned by the wife of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, was carrying 22 passengers and crew and was anchored off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, when it capsized during a fierce, pre-dawn storm on Monday.

Rescue teams did not immediately give the names or the sex of the drowned people, who are the second and third victims of the shipwreck to be found.

The body of the yacht's cook, Recaldo Thomas, was located shortly after the vessel sank.

4 bodies retrieved from British tech magnate’s sunken yacht in Sicily

PORTICELLO, Italy >> Four bodies were found on Wednesday aboard the sunken wreck of a yacht belonging to the wife of British tech magnate Mike Lynch, sources close to the rescue operation said.

The identities of the victims were not immediately given by the authorities. Three of the bodies were brought ashore and taken to nearby hospitals for formal identification. The fourth corpse was being taken to land as evening set in.

Britain’s Daily Telegraph reported that two of the dead were Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter. Local authorities in Sicily declined to comment on the report.

The British-flagged Bayesian, a 184-foot superyacht was carrying 22 people and anchored off the port of Porticello when it was hit by a fierce, pre-dawn storm on Monday.

Lynch, 59, was one of the UK’s best-known tech entrepreneurs and had invited friends to join him on the yacht to celebrate his recent acquittal in a U.S. fraud trial.

Besides Lynch and his daughter, the other people unaccounted for after the disaster were Judy and Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo.

Specialist rescuers have been searching inside the hull of the sunken yacht for the past two days. The victims were believed to have been trapped in cabins, which have proved extremely hard to get to, with divers only able to stay in the vessel for 8-10 minutes before having to re-surface.

Fifteen people managed to escape the yacht before it capsized in the pre-dawn tempest, while the body of the onboard chef, Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, was found near the wreck hours after the disaster.

The Bayesian is lying on its side at a depth of around 50 meters, apparently largely intact.

Besides the diving team, the coast guard has deployed a remotely operated vehicle to scan the seabed and take underwater pictures and videos that it said may provide “useful and timely elements” for prosecutors looking into the disaster.

The coast guard has been questioning survivors, including the captain of the Bayesian, and passengers on the yacht that was moored next to it who witnessed the ship going down, judicial sources said.

No one is under investigation at the moment, sources added.

Experts have been at a loss to explain how a large luxury vessel, presumed to have top-class fittings and safety features, could have sunk within minutes, as recounted by witnesses. The yacht anchored next to it was unharmed by the storm.

The Bayesian, which was owned by Lynch’s wife, was built by Italian shipbuilder Perini in 2008 and last refitted in 2020. It had the world’s tallest aluminum mast, measuring 72 meters, according to its makers.

Lynch has been referred to as Britain’s Bill Gates. He built the UK’s largest software firm, Autonomy, which was sold to HP for $11 billion in 2011, after which the deal spectacularly unraveled with the U.S. tech giant accusing him of fraud, resulting in a lengthy trial.

He was acquitted on all charges by a jury in San Francisco in June. Morvillo had represented him at the trial, while Bloomer was a character witness on his behalf.

Bayesian’s captain James Cutfield, a 51-year-old New Zealander who survived the shipwreck, was a “very good sailor” and “very well respected” in the Mediterranean, his brother Mark told The New Zealand Herald.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, a UK-based non-profit organization that trains sea rescuers, said the Bayesian was the victim of a “high impact” weather-related incident.

“If it was a water spout, which it appears to be, it’s what I would class as like a black swan event,” he told Reuters, meaning a rare and unpredictable phenomenon.

Mike Lynch among dead in yacht disaster as his daughter ‘remains missing’

A fifth body was recovered from the water off Sicily on Thursday morning.

radiant star yacht

The body of technology tycoon Mike Lynch has been recovered after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily, as his 18-year-old daughter reportedly remains missing.

The Italian Coastguard confirmed to the PA news agency that the sixth and final person yet to be found is a woman.

Mr Lynch, his daughter Hannah, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo, and his wife Neda Morvillo were lost when the Bayesian sank at around 5am on Monday.

Bayesian yacht accident

The search was called off at around 8pm in Sicily on Thursday with divers expected to begin again at 6.30am on Friday.

In a statement confirming their parents’ deaths, the Bloomer family described the couple as “incredible people and an inspiration to many”.

They said: “We are grieving for our loved ones and all of those affected by the tragedy.

“Our parents were incredible people and an inspiration to many, but first and foremost they were focused on and loved their family and spending time with their new grandchildren.

“Together for five decades, our only comfort is that they are still together now.

“This is an unimaginable grief to shoulder.”

The chief executive of legal AI company Luminance, which was founded by Mr Lynch, paid tribute to the technology tycoon, saying he was a “visionary unlike any other”.

Eleanor Lightbody said in a statement: “I am devastated to hear the news about our founding investor, Mike Lynch, and all of those involved in this tragic accident.

“Mike was a visionary unlike any other. He had a unique ability to spot the next technological revolution and solve tomorrow’s challenges before others even knew they were coming.

“Above all, Mike was a kind man who had an impact on many and will be sorely missed. I feel honoured to have known him, worked with him and learnt from him over the years.

“The UK has lost someone with the means, authority, knowledge and drive to propel the UK into technological leadership, but his legacy will live on in all of the extraordinary businesses he built and mentored, as well as his family who are in my thoughts.”

The body of the fifth person recovered from the yacht’s wreckage was returned in a blue body bag to the port of Porticello on Thursday morning.

Of the 22 passengers and crew on board, 15 – including Mr Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares – were rescued after escaping on to a lifeboat.

The body of Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, who was working as a chef on the superyacht Bayesian, was recovered at the scene of the sinking on Monday.

The boat trip was a celebration of Mr Lynch’s acquittal in a fraud case in the US.

The businessman, who founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, was cleared in June of carrying out a massive fraud relating to its 11 billion US dollar (£8.64 billion) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

A decision on whether to raise the sunken yacht from the seabed is “not on the agenda”, but will be in the future, a spokesman from the Italian Coastguard has said.

Vincenzo Zagarola told PA: “This is not a topic on the agenda. It will be, but not now.”

He also said that the Italian Coastguard’s working theory is still that the missing woman is inside the boat.

The luxury yacht’s captain, James Cutfield, was reportedly questioned by authorities for two hours as they began speaking to all crew members.

Bayesian yacht accident

A helicopter was previously drafted in to help the search effort, and divers from the local fire service have been seen entering the water with torches attached to their headgear.

Fire crews from the Vigili del Fuoco said they had been accessing the vessel through natural entrances, without making openings.

Remotely controlled underwater vehicles have been used, with naval units and cave divers also taking part in the search, the Italian Coastguard has said.

Bayesian was moored around half a mile off the coast of Porticello when it sank at about 5am local time on Monday as the area was hit by a storm.

The wreckage of the Bayesian is resting on the seabed off the coast at a depth of 50 metres (164ft).

ACCIDENT Italy

Fire crews described the operation as “complex”, with divers limited to 12-minute underwater shifts.

Survivors have been recuperating at a hotel complex in Porticello, where authorities are gathering witness statements.

An Italian doctor at the hospital where British tourist Charlotte Emsley and her one-year-old daughter were taken said the mother held her baby above the waves after the yacht sank.

Dr Domenico Cipolla, of Di Cristina Children’s Hospital in Palermo, told PA: “Obviously the mother and the husband were so shaken by what has happened, it was a tragedy for them.

“She told me that two minutes after falling asleep with her baby they were in the water, she did not understand how this happened, it went dark.

“She held the child high in her arms above the waves, for a few seconds the baby was in the water, but she saved her.

“She sometimes cried for her friends in the hospital.”

Divers recover 5 bodies from wrecked superyacht off Sicily; 1 still missing

Divers searching the wreck of a superyacht that sank off Sicily found the bodies of five passengers Wednesday, leaving one still missing as questions intensified about why the vessel sank so quickly when a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.

PORTICELLO, Sicily — Divers searching the wreck of a superyacht that sank off Sicily found the bodies of five passengers Wednesday, leaving one still missing as questions intensified about why the vessel sank so quickly when a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed.

Rescue crews brought four body bags ashore at Porticello. Salvatore Cocina, head of the Sicily civil protection agency, said a fifth body had been located. Divers on-scene said they would try to recover it on Thursday while continuing the search for the sixth.

The discovery made clear the operation to search the hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater had quickly turned into a recovery one, not a rescue, given the amount of time that had passed and with no signs of life over three days of searching.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (a half-mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believed the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout.

Fifteen people escaped in a lifeboat and were rescued by a nearby sailboat. The body of the ship's chef, Recaldo Thomas of Antigua, was recovered Monday.

Thomas was born in Canada, according to his cousin David Isaac, but visited his parents' homeland of Antigua as a child, and moved permanently to the tiny eastern Caribbean island in his early 20s. Italian officials previously listed Antigua and Canada as the nationality of people on board.

The fate of six missing passengers had driven the search effort, including British tech magnate Mike Lynch, his 18-year-old daughter and associates who had successfully defended him in a recent U.S. federal fraud trial.

Lynch's spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor's Office investigators were acquiring evidence for their criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified.

Questions have abounded about what caused the superyacht, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, to rapidly sink, when the nearby Sir Robert Baden Powell sailboat was largely spared and managed to rescue the survivors.

Giovanni Costantino, head of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the ship maker, blamed human error for the disaster, which he said took 16 minutes. ''The ship sank because it took on water. From where, the investigators will say,'' he told RAI state television after he met with prosecutors.

Costantino cited AIS ship tracking data which he said showed the Bayesian had taken on water for four minutes when a sudden gust of wind flipped it and it continued taking on water. The ship straightened up slightly and then went down, he said.

But was it merely the case of a freak waterspout that knocked the ship to its side and allowed water to pour in through open hatches? What was the position of the keel, which on a large sailboat like the Bayesian might have been retractable to allow it to enter shallower ports?

''There's a lot of uncertainty as to whether it had a lifting keel and whether it might have been up,'' said Jean-Baptiste Souppez, a fellow of the Royal Institute of Naval Architects and the editor of the Journal of Sailing Technology. ''But if it had, then that would reduce the amount of stability that the vessel had, and therefore made it easier for it to roll over on its side,'' he said in an interview.

The captain of the sailboat that rescued survivors said his craft sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, which is the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship's position as the forecast storm rolled in.

''Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,'' Karsten Borner said in a text message. But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian, given its trademark 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.

''If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,'' he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight, sub-compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

The underwater search continued in dangerous and time-consuming conditions. Because of the wreck's depth, which requires special precautions, divers working in pairs could only spend about 12 minutes at a time searching, though reinforcements outfitted with special equipment to enable longer dives were on the wreck Wednesday.

In all, some 27 divers took rotations, including four who helped with recovery after the 2012 Costa Concordia disaster off Tuscany. They called the Porticello wreck a ''little Concordia,'' fire crews said in a statement.

The limited dive time was aimed in part at avoiding decompression sickness, also known as the ''bends,'' which can occur when divers stay underwater for long periods and ascend too quickly, allowing nitrogen gas dissolved in the blood to form bubbles.

''The longer you stay, the slower your ascent has to be,'' said Simon Rogerson, the editor of SCUBA magazine. He said the tight turnaround time suggested the operation's managers were trying to limit the risks and recovery time after each dive.

''It sounds like they're operating essentially on no decompression or very tight decompression, or they're being extremely conservative,'' he said.

Divers were also working with debris floating around them, limited visibility and air tanks on their backs.

''We are trying to advance in tight spaces, but any single thing slows us down,'' said Luca Cari, spokesman for the fire rescue service. ''An electric panel could set us back for five hours. These aren't normal conditions. We're at the limit of possibility.''

Winfield reported from Rome and Kirka from London. Associated Press journalists Trisha Thomas in Rome; Andrea Rosa in Porticello; and Anika Kentish in St. John's, Antigua, contributed to this report.

This story has been corrected to reflect that Thomas was born in Canada, not Antigua.

Sailor taken to hospital after yacht crashes on rocks in Outer Hebrides

The 34-foot-yatch grounded on rocks on the isle of Fuday, north of Barra.

RNLI Kyle of Lochalsh Atlantis 85 inshore lifeboat.

A man was taken to hospital after his sailing yacht crashed on rocks in the Outer Hebrides.

Coastguard teams received a mayday call from the 34-foot vessel at 8:41pm yesterday, Wednesday, August 21.

The man on board said he had lost his anchor, had no engine and was adrift.

The boat then grounded on rocks on the isle of Fuday, north of Barra.

He was rescued by a coastguard lifeboat and taken to St Brendan’s Hospital, while the yacht was abandoned at sea.

Yacht grounded on rocks in Outer Hebrides

A Coastguard spokesperson said: “We had a mayday from a yacht near Barra , with one person on board which subsequently grounded on rocks on the island of Fuday.

“It was very windy and very wet up here last night.

“He was taken to Castlebay by a Barra lifeboat and then he was handed over to the Scottish Ambulance Service.

“The man was then taken to St Brendan’s Hospital in Barra for a check over.”

“The vessel was abandoned, and a coastguard team is going to check the state of the boat this morning.”

Money Inc

A Closer Look at the $320 Million Superyacht “Radiant”

In the world of superyachts, one of the most expensive and lavish ships in the world is the Radiant. As of 2018, it was the sixth most expensive yacht in the world and it’s one that is boardable by invitation only. If you’re as intrigued as we are about this floating luxury vessel, here are the details about what makes the Radiant so highly valued .

The history of the Radiant

The Radiant was originally built as a commissioned vessel ordered by Boris Berezovsky, who is a Russian media magnate. His intention was to have a superyacht built that would outshine the yacht owned by his enemy Roman Abramovich, who was the owner of the Pelorus. This gives us the back story that inspired the specifications of the luxury yacht that was intended to be one of the most glorious yachts to float the seas. The construction code name for the yacht was Darius with the first name to replace the code name as Radiant. The naval architect and builder of the ship is the German shipbuilder Lurssen, and she was launched in 2009 under the Cayman Islands flag . The Radiant was sold by Berezovsky to its current owner, Abdulla Al Futtaim. He hails from the United Arab Emirates and made billions of dollars in the car dealership industry.

Specifications of the Radiant

The Radiant was built with an aluminum superstructure and a strong steel hull. The total length is 360 feet and 10 inches which qualifies it as a superyacht. the beam is 53 ft and 5 inches and the draft is 14 ft 9 inches. The deck material is teak wood. The exterior of the Radiant was designed by Tim Heywood with the intention of making the beam large to provide for an ultra spacious luxury interior. The interior design is provided by Glen pushelberg of Terence Disdale Design. The ship launched in April of 2009 and was delivered to its Russian owner in 2010.

Power of this motor yacht

The tonnage of the Radiant is 5027 tonnes. She is powered by an 8715 horsepower MTU, 16 V 1163 TB73L diesel engine. The maximum speed of the ship is 21 knots. She is also equipped with zero speed stabilizers for the ultimate in guest comfort when the ship is docked, even in rough seas.

The amenities and equipment of the Radiant

We attempted to discover how many cabins were built into the Radiant, but this information is not readily available. It is our assumption that the configuration of the interior may have changed from one owner to another as it is standard practice to make changes to suit the personal tastes and preferences when it changes hands. When it comes to passenger capacity, the Radiant has accepted between 16 to 20 guests aboard. We also assume that there is a crew size of approximately 44 hands for the daily maintenance and operational needs of a craft this size. What we do know is that there are some sweet amenities on board. The Radiant features a helipad so guests and VIPs can easily gain access or leave the vessel, and this also comes in handy in the event of a medical emergency. There is also a cinema for the entertainment of guests, a gymnasium, a spa and jacuzzi for relaxation and a garage to store the tenders. There is also a swimming platform, swimming pools, a beach club, air conditioning and a massage room on board.

Safety equipment

The Radiant is equipped with a state of the art personal protection and security system that is unlike most other defense systems. The comprehensive system includes a barrage of sonic guns that have the capacity to burst the eardrums of any unwelcomed guests such as hijackers or other types of attackers. The yacht is also armed with a series of water cannons that can hurl jets of water that could sink a smaller boat form up to 100 yards from the vessel. A special escape pod has been designed with a speedboat to carry the occupants of the boat to safety if all other measures of protection and security fail. (www.businessinsider.com/most-expensive-yachts-2014-9#6-radiant-is-worth-320-million-5). These safety and protection measures were instituted at the insistence of Berezovsky and the speedboat can reach 75 knots or better. The man who commissioned the building of the Radiant was taking no chances when it came to his personal safety and that of his guests.

Final thoughts

The Radiant remains one of the most expensive and lavish luxury yachts in the world today. It’s the sister of the Dilbar, another highly ranking vessel in the collection and the ship was initially built to go one better and deliver a yacht which was superior to the yacht of the commissioning owner’s rival, which was the Pelorus. One-upmanship was the passion that was behind the design and ultimate building of this $320 million dollar superyacht, which commands the attention of onlookers at whatever port it is docked. If you’re fortunate enough to be one of the invited guests out of the 16 or 20 the ship is intended to accommodate, you will be aboard one of the safest and most secure yacht on the seas and there are a couple of different ways for you to escape if an emergency takes place. From the teak decks to the lavish design features of the interior of this seaworthy paradise, the Radiant is among the most expensive and admired vessels in the world today. Of course, both owners just happen to be billionaires several times over, but it’s nice, sometimes, to see how the other half lives.

radiant-motor-yacht-lurssen-2009-110m-profile

A sister to Al Raya, Radiant was commissioned by the Russian media tycoon Boris Berezovsky, who wanted a rival to Pelorus, owned by his arch enemy Roman Abramovich. However, he subsequently sold her to Abdulla al-Futtaim, a billionaire car dealer from the United Arab Emirates, before she was completed. As well as the standard features for a yacht of this size - helipad, gymnasium, cinema, spa - she has one of the highest security specifications ever conceived. Berezovsky ordered a personal “escape launch” – a speedboat with turbo-charged twin diesel engines capable of exceeding 75 knots. She is also equipped with an arsenal of sonic guns that fire low-frequency sound waves that can burst the eardrums of approaching assailants, and a military water cannon capable of sinking an approaching boat at more than 100 yards.
