‘Absolutely heartbroken’: Widow of Kiwi sailor killed off Fiji speaks

Clive Nothling of Kerikeri on board his yacht Second Life in Fiji in September 2023. Nothling died when struck by a section of the yacht's mast off the coast of Fiji.

The widow of a sailor killed off the coast of Fiji on a New Zealand-flagged yacht says she can’t wait for his body to return home.

Robyn Nothling’s husband, 73-year-old Clive Nothling of Russell, was knocked unconscious when the boom of his boat, the Second Life, hit him late Sunday evening.

Nothling logged his journey, revealing he missed his wife’s eightieth birthday while he was away.

“Sorry I missed it but will make it up to her,” his note read.

He posted photographs of himself and his crewmates fishing, swimming, and sailing next to dolphins. His wife spent some time with him on the trip but returned to New Zealand early.

“[It] was great having her with me. [I] love her to bits.”

Crewmate Kevin Harper was also injured. Harper was sailing when the mast’s boom hit the pair.

Nothling was knocked unconscious about 24 hours before help arrived, by which time he was already dead, his widow said.

The cruise ship Pacific Explorer diverted course to respond to the Second Life’s mayday call about 1am on Monday.

The Pacific Explorer winched one person to safety and the Republic of Fiji Navy ship Saveneca saved the other survivor.

Nothling’s widow said, “I’m heartbroken, absolutely heartbroken. I don’t know how I’m even talking right now.”

“He was due home from Fiji in four days when he died. We couldn’t wait to see each other.

“He was a very special, strong man. He was known for being a very safe and competent sailor. This was a freak accident,” she said.

Nothling, born in South Africa and a keen sailor most of his life, had been in Fiji about four months before he died. He worked in the tech industry for several years.

“In his 30s, he built a boat in [his] backyard in Wellington and sailed around the world for eight years,” his widow said.

“I sailed with him for 30 years on our boat - I never ever felt afraid. He never ever took risks.

“We were together [those] 30 years. We were very much in love with each other and we had lovely plans.”

She believed the tragedy unfolded after the craft’s autopilot went awry.

Speaking from their home in Russell, she said details were still “sketchy” and hadn’t been confirmed.

“What happened was; the boom came across and hit Kevin first and then Clive, and he was unconscious for over 24 hours or more before they got him out.”

Passengers aboard the Pacific Explorer, a 2000-berth pleasure cruiser, witnessed the rescue, with video footage showing the Second Life bobbing against its hull.

Harper and a third crew member, whom Nothling’s widow only knew as Sean, were taken to Fiji, along with Nothling’s body. Consular services were notified.

Second Life’s crew were offloaded about 12 hours after they sent a mayday call.

Due to rough weather, the cruise ship was unable to launch small tenders.

The Pacific Explorer ship remained at a safe distance and waited for the Fijian navy to conduct a recovery operation for the sailing ship.

RFNS patrol boat Savenaca intercepted the immobilised yacht after midday.

Republic of Fiji Navy (RFN) sailors were seen boarding the 12-metre yacht via dirigible and removing bags from the craft.

Maritime New Zealand’s Rescue Coordination Centre (RCCNZ) confirmed two survivors were recovered from the vessel, while “sadly one person has died as a result of an incident involving a yacht off Fiji [Monday] evening”.

“This was a challenging search and rescue operation in tough conditions,” a spokesperson for RCCNZ said.

“Maritime NZ’s Rescue Coordination Centre wants to acknowledge the work of the Rescue Coordination Centre, Fiji in leading coordination of the rescue efforts.”

A second response vessel in the area, The Beast, a privately-owned vessel belonging to Sir Michael Hill, also diverted to assist shortly after midday.

Cruise passengers reported that the Pacific Explorer continued on its course to Fiji at around 2pm local time.

A spokeswoman for Carnival Australia, the parent company of cruise operator P&O, said the Pacific Explorer had been first to respond to a call for help via the New Zealand Rescue Co-ordination Centre.

“We’d like to take this opportunity to thank our crew, led by Captain Alan Nixon, for their immense efforts in very poor conditions, as well as our guests onboard for their understanding,” they said.

Second Life was last seen in Nadi Bay on Thursday, September 21. Nothling’s widow understood the Republic of Fiji Navy has since scuttled the craft.

Nothling was also survived by his son Zak Nothling, whom he had with his ex-wife Lynn Nothling. He had previously been a member of the Kerikeri Cruising Club.

Fiji works to recover patrol boat that ran aground after being gifted by Australia

A mission to salvage a boat that ran aground on its maiden voyage after Australia gifted it to Fiji has begun, with efforts underway to minimise any environmental impacts including a potential oil spill.

Fiji's navy said on Saturday that favourable weather conditions would assist the recovery of RFNS Puamau, which hit a reef on Fiji's remote Lau group of islands on Monday, during its first patrol.

It said in a statement that Australia had sent specialised recovery equipment that would be used to extract the boat from the reef, with a second vessel set to transport the gear to the site.

"The Republic of Fiji Navy reaffirms its commitment to minimising environmental impact during the de-fuelling process now underway," it said.

"Measures to mitigate a potential oil spill have been deployed, and navy divers and engineers on scene continue to monitor the situation."

The crew of RFNS Puamau returned to Suva after being collected by another vessel, RFNS Savenaca, on Saturday morning.

There are no reports of injuries due to the grounding incident but the extent of the damage to the boat remains unclear.

The event is a major embarrassment for Fiji's navy, which accepted the vessel at a ceremony in Perth in March.

The Guardian-class patrol boat is a popular choice with Pacific countries, with many using them to survey and protect vast marine zones.

As part of the Pacific Maritime Security Program, 19 boats have been so far handed over to Pacific nations.

However, the Australian government has admitted the boats are flawed, with Pacific Minister Pat Conroy revealing the vessels have some defects including potential exhaust issues.

Two of the Guardian-class boats were destroyed by cyclones that hit Tuvalu last year.

Another boat was gifted to Samoa after another Guardian-class boat was damaged beyond repair there in 2021.

Preliminary investigations of Nabouwalu boat accident complete but MSAF cannot reveal details yet

yacht accident fiji

The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji says they cannot disclose any details until the completion of the full investigation on the boat accident in Nabouwalu last month that resulted in the death of a fisherman.

The fisherman was in a wooden fishing boat which collided with the inter-island passenger vessel – Joseph P about five kilometres away from the Nabouwalu Jetty.

MSAF says they conducted a preliminary investigation on the day of the incident and established a detailed plan and timeline moving forward.

It says it is unfortunate there have been a number of serious incidents that have occurred out at sea this year including the death of a Bosun in Ono-i-Lau, the collision of the MV Ohana and the Lomaiviti Princess VIII and the recent fatal incident involving the MV Joseph P and a fishing boat.

MSAF says they dedicate resources to try and address these cases at the earliest possible time.

MSAF further says the case of the MV Ohana and Lomaiviti Princess VIII was closed on the 22nd of May and the result of the investigation and decision by MSAF was discussed and executed with relevant parties.

They say investigations into the two remaining cases are continuing in consultation with Police.

In addressing the safety of vessels and passengers, MSAF says they also conduct training and awareness for boat master licenses and refresher courses which are facilitated by the Fiji Maritime Academy.

MSAF is encouraging the travelling public to share with them any information that can help improve safety for any travel at sea, both for small boats as well as bigger vessels.

Fiji Navy’s new Patrol Boat RFNS Puamau runs aground on Fulaga Island reef

Fiji’s newly commissioned Guardian-class patrol boat, RFNS Puamau, ran aground on a reef at Fulaga Island in the Lau group on Sunday.

RFNS Puamau was provided by Australia under the Pacific Patrol Boat Replacement Project to enhance maritime security across the Pacific. This vessel is the second of its kind delivered to Fiji, following its sister ship, RFNS Savenaca.

The Republic of Fiji Navy confirmed the grounding incident, which occurred during a two-week patrol mission.

“Our utmost priority is the safety and welfare of all crew onboard.

“A crisis management team has been assembled to oversee the situation, with emergency support crews and secondary support arrangements underway to safely remove the vessel.

“As our focus remains steadfast on ensuring the safety of life, additional information will be disseminated from HQ Navy as it becomes available.”

The Navy expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support extended to ensure the safe return of the patrol boat crew.

“We are profoundly grateful for the invaluable assistance offered by our partners and stakeholders during this trying period.

“Be assured, our dedicated teams are tirelessly engaged in addressing the situation at hand. A second patrol boat with Navy divers has arrived on scene to assist with damage control assessments and temporary repairs before the arrival of specialist salvage operators. An assessment flight is also scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday) to enhance our situational awareness.

“Furthermore, key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Home Affairs & Immigration and the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), are being kept updated. In our recovery efforts, we are prioritising options that not only ensure the safe retrieval of the vessel but also focus on minimizing environmental impact,” the Fiji Navy added.

The arrival of RFNS Puamau was intended to strengthen Fiji’s naval capabilities and enhance cooperation with Australia and other Pacific Island nations as part of Australia’s Pacific Maritime Security Programme.

The Guardian-class vessels offer improved performance over earlier models, supporting a wide range of maritime operations. RFNS Puamau is the first of four Guardian-class boats set to be delivered in 2024. Overall, 22 vessels are planned for this initiative, which aims to boost maritime security and operational capacity throughout the Pacific region.

Doesn't sound like a very successful rescue then.

The NZ Herald story above made it sound like there was two crew, this story says 3, but one dead.

Perhaps the NZ Herald story was referring to two crew alive. One taken off and being treated on the cruise ship, and one still alive with one dead on the yacht, which appears would be rolling around like a bastard. All sounds very concerning / bad / sad whatever is going on

One person has died after getting into trouble in water near Fiji. They were on a yacht with two other people when a mayday was called on Sunday night.

Kiwi cruise passenger Ali Gilhurst told   Stuff   the captain alerted the passengers about the death on Monday afternoon.

“He told us one person on the yacht was, unfortunately, deceased before we got there last night. Another passenger was rescued from the vessel today by the Fijian crew. There were originally three on board the stricken yacht.”

RNZ (radio) said the crewman was killed when the rig came down. If that is the case it is very sad indeed.

One member of a New Zealand yachting crew has died and two more are seriously injured after being struck by a broken mast off the coast of Fiji.

The Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Fiji said the crew sent a mayday distress call near Nadi at around 9pm last night.

"One of the yacht's mast broke and the crew got hit by it," a spokesperson said.

Maritime New Zealand's Rescue Coordination Centre confirmed that one person died after being hit by the mast.

An Australian cruise ship, the Pacific Explorer, diverted its route to help the yacht.

But a Maritime NZ said the cruise ship was too big and could only pick up one of the survivors for medical treatment.

Can’t see any evidence of the rig posing a risk to life or limb the damage to the upper portion appears later and may well be the result of contact with the ship.

It would appear from the last two days Herald reports -that the paper is lacking editorial oversight of the articles pasted up by their cub reporters -who dont even have a grip on the English language -dirigibles ! And even making up the story to the point that it was factually incorrect -obvious from the first pictures .

An extremely sad event for those involved and left .

Autopilot packed up, leading to the skipper getting knocked unconscious by the boom, later dieing.

Following the Platino and now Second Life, I wonder if CAT 1 will make boom-breaks or some other form of gybe preventer mandatory.

Better to design a boat where the traveler is not in the cockpit, the boom is above head height,  oh yeah and drop the main early when going downwind in a freshening breeze.

Apparently the yacht has been scuttled by the Navy.

Agree sails are off the mast so likely the dismantling happened when going alongside.

A Missouri woman is opening up about a horrific boat crash that killed her husband and their 7-year-old daughter over Labor Day weekend.

"We were just out camping for our holiday weekend, hanging out with friends, family, boat riding, and we were just going on our last ride," Samatha Newbound, 29, tells PEOPLE just over a week after the deaths of husband Reven Newbound, 30, and their daughter Avery.

It's still hard for her to remember what happened on that boat ride. "Everything is just a blur," says Samantha, who was injured in the crash, as were the couple's three other children.

She remembers seeing "a branch" and then "going to grab the kids to get them down in the boat." She also recalls hearing her friend scream before she believes she briefly lost consciousness.

In an incident report , the Missouri State Highway Patrol said that Reven, who was operating the boat, and the 7 year old died after their boat struck a root and collided with a rock bluff on the Gasconade River in Osage County at 7 p.m. local time.

In the aftermath of the crash, Samantha says she was "hurt" and "knew I couldn't move."

Fortunately, one of her kids found Samantha's phone. She called 911 and waited for authorities to get there.

"There were some people that were able to find us before the professionals and they just kind of stayed there and made sure that I was conscious and that the kids were okay," she says.

According to the incident report, Reven and Avery were pronounced dead at the scene, while Samantha and Avery's siblings were hospitalized.

Among her many injuries, Samantha says she "had bones sticking out of my leg, so they put a rod and plates in my leg and my right leg."

Samantha, who is now back home with her surviving children, remembers her husband as a hardworking and caring man who "always wanted to make people laugh."

As for her daughter, she says that Avery "had a heart of gold."

"She always just wanted to make everyone happy and feel loved," Samantha says. "She loved her brothers and sisters a lot."

Kolb Grading, the company where Reven worked, tells PEOPLE in a statement that he was a utility crew foreman for them for several years.

"He lead with his knowledge, work ethic and willingness to tackle any task alongside his crew. Reven was fun-loving and full of energy and we will miss his visits to the office," the company says, noting that above all, he "had a passion for life and his family."

Following the crash, a GoFundMe fundraiser was created on behalf of the family by loved ones.

"The journey ahead will be long and challenging," read a message on the fundraiser, which has raised over $40,000 as of Sept. 13.

Samantha tells PEOPLE that while some days are harder than others, she takes comfort in the support she and her family have received.

She adds, "I have an army behind me if I need it."

U.S. wins case to seize Russian superyacht in Fiji, sails away

"The Amadea" in Turkey's Bodrum

The United States won a legal battle on Tuesday to seize a Russian-owned superyacht in Fiji and wasted no time in taking command of the $325 million vessel and sailing it away from the South Pacific nation.

The court ruling represented a significant victory for the U.S. as it encounters obstacles in its attempts to seize the assets of Russian oligarchs around the world. While those efforts are welcomed by many who oppose the war in Ukraine, some actions have tested the limits of American jurisdiction abroad.

In Fiji, the nation’s Supreme Court lifted a stay order which had prevented the U.S. from seizing the superyacht Amadea.

Chief Justice Kamal Kumar ruled that based on the evidence, the chances of defense lawyers mounting an appeal that the top court would hear were “nil to very slim.”

Kumar said he accepted arguments that keeping the superyacht berthed in Fiji at Lautoka harbor was “costing the Fijian government dearly.”

“The fact that U.S. authorities have undertaken to pay costs incurred by the Fijian government is totally irrelevant,” the judge found. He said the Amadea “sailed into Fiji waters without any permit and most probably to evade prosecution by the United States of America.”

The U.S. removed the motorized vessel within an hour or two of the court’s ruling, possibly to ensure the yacht didn’t get entangled in any further legal action.

In early May, the Justice Department issued a statement saying the Amadea had been seized in Fiji, but that turned out to be premature after lawyers appealed.

It wasn’t immediately clear where the U.S. intended to take the Amadea, which the FBI has linked to the Russian oligarch Suleiman Kerimov.

Deputy Attorney General Monaco Speaks At ATF's Police Executives Forum

Fiji Director of Public Prosecutions Christopher Pryde said unresolved questions of money laundering and the ownership of the Amadea need to be decided in the U.S.

“The decision acknowledges Fiji’s commitment to respecting international mutual assistance requests and Fiji’s international obligations,” Pryde said.

In court documents, the FBI linked the Amadea to the Kerimov family through their alleged use of code names while aboard and the purchase of items such as a pizza oven and a spa bed. The ship became a target of Task Force KleptoCapture, launched in March to seize the assets of Russian oligarchs to put pressure on Russia to end the war.

The 348-foot -long vessel, about the length of a football field, features a live lobster tank, a hand-painted piano, a swimming pool and a large helipad.

Lawyer Feizal Haniff, who represented paper owner Millemarin Investments, had argued the owner was another wealthy Russian who, unlike Kerimov, doesn’t face sanctions.

The U.S. acknowledged that paperwork appeared to show Eduard Khudainatov was the owner but said he was also the paper owner of a second and even larger superyacht, the Scheherazade, which has been linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The U.S. questioned whether Khudainatov could really afford two superyachts worth a total of more than $1 billion.

“The fact that Khudainatov is being held out as the owner of two of the largest superyachts on record, both linked to sanctioned individuals, suggests that Khudainatov is being used as a clean, unsanctioned straw owner to conceal the true beneficial owners,” the FBI wrote in a court affidavit.

Court documents say the Amadea switched off its transponder soon after Russia invaded Ukraine and sailed from the Caribbean through the Panama Canal to Mexico, arriving with over $100,000 in cash. It then sailed thousands of miles (kilometers) across the Pacific Ocean to Fiji.

The Justice Department said it didn’t believe paperwork showing the Amadea was next headed to the Philippines, arguing it was really destined for Vladivostok or elsewhere in Russia.

The department said it found a text message on a crew member’s phone saying, “We’re not going to Russia” followed by a “shush” emoji.

The U.S. said Kerimov secretly bought the Cayman Island-flagged Amadea last year through various shell companies.

Kerimov made a fortune investing in Russian gold producer Polyus, with Forbes magazine putting his net worth at $14.5 billion. The U.S. first sanctioned him in 2018 after he was detained in France and accused of money laundering there, sometimes arriving with suitcases stuffed with 20 million euros.

Khudainatov is the former chairman and chief executive of Rosneft, the state-controlled Russian oil and gas company.

Kiwi toddler Māhina Toki dies after falling from family boat in Fiji

A 13-month-old toddler from Great Barrier Island has died despite multiple efforts to revive her after falling from her family’s boat in Fiji.

The child, who has been named as Māhina Toki, was believed to have been strapped into a harness on the boat’s deck and watching a movie while her parents, Mark and Kiri, were cooking dinner in the galley, a Fiji Police spokeswoman said.

When they returned to the deck, they could not find Māhina and began searching for her. The toddler was found floating in the sea.

Extensive efforts were made to revive the toddler with a large number of boaties in the cove, including doctors and other medical staff, rushing to assist the family.

“By the time we could find her, it was too late,” a friend of the grieving family wrote on a Givealittle page set up to cover the cost of flights back home and funeral expenses.

The family, from Great Barrier Island, had arrived at Musket Cove in their 10-metre catamaran Kalamari on Wednesday. Photo / Givealittle

It said Māhina had been tethered to the boat but “worked free” and ended up in the water.

The police spokeswoman said the family’s yacht was docked in Musket Cove, on the west side of Fiji, when the incident occurred on Friday.

The family, from Great Barrier Island, had arrived at Musket Cove in their 10-metre catamaran Kalamari on Wednesday after sailing from New Zealand.

Musket Cove Resort manager Joe Mar told the Herald there is a huge sense of shock across the island.

“The family rushed into shore to seek help and a lot of people rushed to their aid, but unfortunately couldn’t revive her,” he said.

He says the family have now moved inland to Denarau and are being supported by Fiji police.

“Māhina was a beautiful, happy, smiling child who loved the water and life on the boat,” reads the Givealittle page, which had raised over $21,000 on Sunday night.

“Her mother, Kiri, said she had eyes that looked into your soul from the [day] she was born.”

Her parents were now in the process of “picking up their lives” and heading back to New Zealand.

“To the beloved Māhina, may you forever live in peace, splashing with joy somewhere in the sea,” the family friend wrote.

Fijian Police are still investigating the incident.

Island Cruising New Zealand owner Viki Moore said a number of their participants rushed to the aid of the family and it turn spoke about how traumatising the incident was.

“They did all they could to help them,” she said.

Moore says it is common practice when sailing for people to be tethered to the boat.

“I don’t know what happened in this case, but it is very sad,” Moore said.

Moore says there are around 85 boats on their rally with between two and four people on board that annually make the trip to Fiji.

“A lot of people decide to travel independently as well so I estimate there could be upwards of 200 New Zealand boats in Fiji,” she said.

A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) said it was aware of the death and providing consular assistance to the family.

Musket Cove is part of the Malolo Lailai Islands, located approximately 17 kilometres from Nadi Airport.

The Musket Cove Island Resort overlooks a sheltered lagoon, which is a haven for visiting yachts from around the world.

The Musket Cove Yacht Club is famous for hosting and organizing the annual Fiji Regatta Week and currently has over 16,000-lifetime members.

Woman dies weeks after Hingham Bay boat collision, another victim in critical condition

By Neal Riley

September 10, 2024 / 4:38 PM EDT / CBS Boston

WEYMOUTH - A 70-year-old woman has died and another victim is still hospitalized in critical condition weeks after a dramatic boat collision in Hingham Bay.

Patricia Cicalese, of East Walpole, died on Sept. 7, Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey's office said Tuesday. The other injured victim has not been identified.

Investigators say a 38-foot Sea Ray speedboat crashed into a 21-foot Pisces sailboat off Grape Island at 12:43 p.m. on Aug. 16. First responders from Hingham, Weymouth and Massachusetts Environmental Police rushed to respond to the crash.

Sailboat was submerged after crash in Hingham Bay

SkyEye footage from that day shows the sailboat almost completely submerged.

Water taxi captain Ray Suarez saw the aftermath of the of the collision.

"We saw the mast just sticking out of the water. There was a lot of state police and salvage boats trying to figure out what to do with it," Suarez previously told WBZ-TV. "Sailboats generally go very slow, and powerboats generally go very fast. So, somebody obviously wasn't paying attention because they hit the boat so hard that they sank it, and that's not a common occurrence."

Lifelong boater Bill Norton could see the mast of the boat sticking up from his house.

"Sailboat has the right of way over a powerboat, every time," he said.

Hingham Bay boat collision still under investigation

The district attorney didn't say anything Tuesday about who was operating the speedboat.

The incident is being investigated by State Police detectives in Morrissey's office and the Environmental Police. Anyone with information is asked to call 781-830-4990.

Auckland-Fiji Pacific Explorer cruise ship diverts to yacht in distress in high seas rescue, one person receiving medical treatment

  • William Hewett

A person from a small boat is receiving medical treatment after their yacht was saved by a Fiji-bound cruise ship in a high-seas rescue overnight.

Passengers onboard the Pacific Explorer, which departed Auckland on Friday, were told they were no longer calling into Suva, Fiji.

The ship had to divert at around midnight to respond to a distress call from a small boat, which reportedly had a broken mast southwest of Nadi.

The Pacific Explorer was the closest ship and required to respond to the mayday call.

Footage posted on Facebook shows the small boat bobbing around in the rough seas next to the Pacific Explorer.

Passenger Ali Gilchrist from Tauranga was aboard the Pacific Explorer and posted on Facebook saying the boat is tied to the ship.

"Our captain has managed to locate the distressed vessel, which turned out to be a yacht with a broken mast," she wrote.

"We are unsure if we are just going to continue to float around here until morning, or if they are going to attempt to do something with the broken yacht."

Maritime NZ told Newshub two further support vessels are expected to arrive at the location of the small boat later on Monday - one at about midday (local time) and another at 4pm.

Maritime NZ's Rescue Coordination Centre said one of the crew from the small boat is receiving medical treatment.

"Support from the vessels scheduled to arrive later today is needed to assist the other people on-board the yacht," Maritime NZ's Rescue Coordination Centre said.

"Due to conditions and the comparative size of the Pacific Explorer assisting the remaining people on-board the yacht isn't possible."

More from Newshub

The cruise ship is currently on an eight-day voyage from Auckland, carrying nearly 2000 guests.

A spokeswoman for P&O Australia confirmed to NZ Herald the Pacific Explorer was "requested to assist a yacht in distress south of Fiji".

"P&O received a call for assistance from the New Zealand Rescue Coordination Centre and arrived at 1am local time.

"Guests will be kept up to date with any necessary itinerary adjustments as Pacific Explorer renders assistance to those in distress."

Woman dies after August boat crash off Weymouth coast

WEYMOUTH, MASS. (WHDH) - One of two people who were injured in a boat crash off the coast of Weymouth last month has died, the Norfolk County District Attorney’s office announced.

The crash happened on Aug. 16 involving a sailboat and a motorboat. The injured people were soon taken to a hospital in Boston.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Norfolk DA’s office said Patricia Cicalese, 70, of East Walpole, was pronounced dead over the weekend. The other injured person remained in critical condition as of Tuesday afternoon.

While the second injured person continues to receive care, court documents obtained by 7NEWS show investigators with the Massachusetts Environmental Police obtained search warrants to examine navigational equipment on both the 21-foot sailboat and the 38-foot motorboat to determine if any criminal charges should be filed.

According to documents, the owner of the motorboat and his wife spoke to police after returning to shore on the day of the crash.

Detectives said 62-year-old John Reichhardt told them he saw a small fishing boat crossing a channel and was “trying to pay attention to that.”

Reichhardt said he saw the sailboat when he turned his head. He tried to turn hard to his starboard side but said he could not avoid a collision.

Among other notes, the investigating detective said he did not make any observations or find any clues “that would indicate Reichhardt was under the influence of any intoxicating substances.”

The DA’s office said it had assumed control of the investigation as of Tuesday afternoon. Officials said their investigation was ongoing and asked anyone with information to contact authorities 781-830-4990.

Video from the scene on Aug. 16 showed police boats and a tow boat near the crash site. The US Coast Guard also responded.

In addition to on-duty emergency crews, an off-duty fire chief and his brother were among those rushing to help the injured people.

Hanson Fire Chief Robert O’Brien spoke to 7NEWS after the crash, saying “It was just natural instinct to help them out.”

O’Brien had been fishing with his brother, an off-duty Weymouth police officer. The pair spotted the aftermath of the crash and saw the sailboat sinking. They soon helped get the injured people out of the water and began to assess their injuries.

Three weeks after the collision, 7NEWS cameras on Tuesday captured video of the heavily damaged sailboat, which has been raised and brought back to dry land.

Area boaters said they were confused about the entire situation.

“I’m very surprised that an accident like that could happen right there,” one man said.

Boaters said they were also heartbroken by the loss of a life.

“I was hoping nobody got hurt,” another boater said. “You can replace a boat.”

Three New Zealanders on board a yacht are seriously injured after being hit by a broken mast off the coast of Fiji, with one now receiving medical attention on a cruise ship.

The Rescue Co-ordination Centre (RCC) in Fiji said the crew sent a mayday distress call near Nadi at around 9pm last night.

"There are 3 people on board, all New Zealanders," a spokesperson said.

"One of the yacht's mast broke and the crew got hit by it."

The Australian cruise ship Pacific Explorer diverted its route to help the yacht last night.

Maritime New Zealand's Rescue Co-ordination Centre said one person was transferred to the cruise for medical treatment, but more help would be needed.

"Two further support vessels are expected later today, one at about midday and another at 4pm," a spokesperson said.

"Support from the vessels is needed to assist the other people on-board the yacht as, due to conditions and the comparative size of the Pacific Explorer, assisting the remaining people on-board the yacht isn't possible."

A P and O Cruises spokesperson said "Continuing our long-standing practice of assisting mariners at sea, we can confirm Pacific Explorer supported the rescue of a distressed yacht early this morning south-west of Nadi (Fiji).

"We'd like to take this opportunity to thank our crew, led by Captain Alan Nixon, for their immense efforts in very poor conditions, as well as our guests onboard for their understanding.

"We continue to work closely with RCC Fiji and Maritime New Zealand's Rescue Coordination Centre during this time."

‘It's just a tragedy': Officials investigate cause of Old Saybrook boat crash

The breakwater where encon officials say a boat crashed the evening of labor day is a part of the investigation. the location has been subject to crashes in previous years including two just last summer., by kevin gaiss • published september 3, 2024 • updated on september 3, 2024 at 8:02 pm.

“It’s just a tragedy, it really is, Kimberly Keinz, of Old Saybrook, said.

She lives across the street from the Harbor One Marina at Saybrook Point. The investigation and search lasted all day Tuesday. She noted the number of sirens and first responders that came to the area after the crash.

“There was a little chop but not a bad night otherwise,” said a boater, who wished to remain anonymous, who was crossing through that area after a boating trip with family.

He estimated he passed through the same area as the crash about 15 to 20 minutes before it happened.

“Last night was definitely a dark night,” he said.

According to officials in a press conference Tuesday afternoon, they are investigating darkness as a factor in the crash, though they noted the boat had appropriate instruments.

They are also considering speed as a factor.

That boater noted he has run boats in and out of Old Saybrook his whole life, and understands the breakwater is hard to see, especially on a particularly dark night.

“The lighthouse and the inner light right behind it, which I think some people may confuse with the inlet of the river that your home and they don’t realize you aren’t home,” he said.

Though Encon police said the channel is properly marked, it's also part of the investigation.

“They are marked, and it's something we are looking into,” Captain Keith Williams with Connecticut Environmental Conservation Police said.

Last year, on Labor Day weekend, four were injured in a similar crash. A boat crashed into the breakwater.

A few weeks before that at the end of July, another boat crashed on a jetty at the mouth of the river. A man was sent to the hospital in that crash.

“It doesn’t happen that often, but we have had a few in the last couple of years,” Captain Williams said.

Some stopping by Tuesday wondered what could be done along the channel to prevent this from happening again. As did the boater passing through ahead of the crash.

“I don’t know if they can do anything to improve that wall to light it up,” he said.

While investigators determine the cause and how to keep these crashes from happening in the future, those stopping by the boat recovery said they are thinking of the family.

“You hate to see any incident, any tragedy where there is loss of life,” Keinz said.

Even though boating season is winding down, officials are still offering the reminder to always have the appropriate life jackets on board and always make sure your instruments are working, and you are familiar with them.
