Best boat fenders: 7 of the best options for protecting your topsides

We take a look at 7 of the best boat fenders on the market right now, which are available in various shapes and sizes

best-boat-fenders-buyers-guide

Doubling up your fenders can create a useful step

If ever there was an unsung hero in the world of boating, it surely has to be the humble fender. Ubiquitous and largely maintenance-free, fenders dangle fearlessly in the face of adversity, protecting the valuable and vulnerable hulls of their owners from miscalculations at the helm and the wayward actions of other boaters alike.

It follows, therefore, that fenders should not be regarded simply as ‘fit and forget’ items, but as integral safety components with the potential to protect against substantial damage-repair costs.

Consequently, it’s well worth reviewing the complement of fenders attached to your boat and asking questions such as: are they the right type and size? Do I have enough of them? Are they in a serviceable condition?

What to look for in a good set of boat fenders

In terms of type, side-hull fenders are most commonly cylindrical, ball or flat/cushion, while bows and transoms can be protected with shaped fenders made specifically for purpose. A commonly used sizing guide for cylindrical fenders advises between 25-50 millimetres diameter for every 1-1.5 metres of boat length.

The length of the fender itself will depend on the freeboard of the boat to which it is attached. A minimum of three fenders per side is recommended, with at least one placed every 3 metres along the length of the boat. A ball fender at the bow not only guards the sharp end from collisions but also comes in handy as a rover or when springing off pontoons .

Always ensure your fenders are pumped up to the correct pressure – generally between 0.15 and 0.2 bar – and show them some love by cleaning them regularly. That way, they will give you many years of service in return.

And lastly, if you’re too posh to pull, why not try an automatic fender system ?

Here’s our pick of the best boat fenders on the market today.

best-boat-fenders-majoni

Majoni white/blue boat fenders, set of four

Our pick here is a bundle of four size 2 (15 x 56 cm) Majoni fenders. Described as being ideal for boats from 19-22 feet in length and supplied ready inflated, the deal listed below includes a complimentary set of fender ropes.

That means each fender and its rope comes in at less than £15 each, which we reckon represents good value by any measure.

The styling – a white body tipped with blue at either end – is a long-time boater’s favourite which adds a splash of colour to a fender set which might otherwise look a touch drab, especially after a season or two’s use.

Price: £57.49

best-boat-fenders-ocean-round

Ocean Series R round fender

Ocean’s Series R round fenders are heavy duty units, and as such are much favoured by commercial fishermen as well as recreational boaters. Available in a selection of eight sizes from R0 (22 x 30 cm) to R7 (100 x 138 cm), Ocean’s Series R caters for boats from 3 to 24 metres.

All Series R fenders have a rib-reinforced eye to ensure ropes are held securely and safely over the long term. The buoy’s one-piece construction, consistent wall thickness and UV resistance all add strength and durability to this well designed product.

And if white with a blue tip doesn’t take your fancy, R Series buoys are also available in red tipped with dark blue.

best-boat-fenders-anchor-marine

Anchor Marine standard fenders

Anchor Marine has been manufacturing fenders in the UK for more than half a century. Moulded in UV-resistant PVC and available in 12 colours in addition to base white, the company’s standard boat fenders are popular among commercial and leisure users.

Ruggedly constructed with a high resistance to bursting – due to what Anchor Marine describes as its ‘class leading wall thickness’ – each fender has an eye at either end to allow horizontal or vertical attachment to the boat.

Fitted with valves for easy inflation and deflation, all Anchor Marine standard fenders have hard thimble eyes to reinforce rope securing points.

Price: £7.95 – £49.95

best-boat-fenders-anchor-transom-corner-fender

Anchor Marine transom fender

Our second featured product from Anchor Marine are these transom fenders, which have been designed to give protection to any boat with a vulnerable transom or bathing platform. And if you’d rather not fit them to your boat, they can just as easily be mounted to the exposed corners of a marina berth or finger pontoon instead.

Supplied with two mounting strips and offered in four colours – white, royal blue, black and navy – these fenders measure 13 x 10 x 10 cm and weigh in at just under a kilogramme. Built to the same high standards as all other Anchor Marine products, these transom fenders could well pay for themselves in single bump!

Price: £27.99

Flat/cushion fenders

The obvious advantage of flat or cushion fenders is that they will not puncture or deflate, meaning 24/7 protection is provided regardless of whether the owner is on hand to keep a watch on them.

Our pick here is Force 4 Chandlery ‘s own-brand flat/cushion fender. Available in two sizes – 41 x 21 x 5 cm and 55 x 29 x 7 cm – these blue and white semi-rigid fenders are manufactured from tough PU closed-cell foam which will not absorb water.

Being flat, they are also easy to stow and, as Force 4 helpfully points out, double up as cockpit cushions or kneeling pads when not in use protecting the boat.

Boat Fenders Compared

By: Bradley Axmith

motor yacht fenders

We gave our Boating Team one job: Review the best boat fenders. Some fenders they use, some we bought or otherwise interviewed boaters that have them. Our review team always considers durability, price, quality, and value in their reviews.

motor yacht fenders

Boat fenders are the best and easiest way to protect your boat. They will save you money and give your neighbors peace of mind.

Also known as boat bumpers, fenders work as cushions. They absorb the impact of bumps against docks, pilings, and other vessels, thus avoiding damages to your watercraft and making sure that your boat’s hull and gelcoat stay in good shape.

So in this guide, we’re going to take a closer look at the best boat fenders on the market right now.

We’ve reviewed all sorts of models—from the traditional cylindrical fenders, round numbers useful where boats are tapered, ones that protect both the hull and rub rails to the more innovative designs available at the moment.

The Top 6 Boat Fenders in 2024

All the boat fenders we've tested, polyform g series.

Polyform G Series

Where to buy:

Where to buy polyform g series:.

Specially designed for recreational trailered boats in protected moorings, the Polyform G Series are cylindrical bumpers with molded ribs that come in six different sizes and a vast array of bright, stylish, and long-lasting colors, so you can create the look you desire for your boat.

Polyform has been producing buoys for over 50 years, so in that time, they certainly have learned a thing or two about them. The G Series fenders are true proof of that! They boast great quality and are made of abrasion- and puncture-resistant material to ensure they can take a real beating.

The included ribs provide extra strength while the reinforced rope holds ensure long-term durability. Also, unlike other brands which have needle valves that are more prone to leaking, Polyform features a flat head screw seal, which is leak-proof.

The Polyform G Series Boat Fenders are shipped pre-inflated and without an inflation valve.

It features a seamless construction with molded ribs that minimizes rolling, tough marine-grade vinyl with a high-gloss finish for both durability and beauty, as well as a center rope tube that allows end-to-end line passage, so it can be hung either vertically or horizontally with a single line.

This one is suitable for boats between 25 – 35 feet, but they’re also available in three other sizes to suit boats up to 60 ft.

Five Oceans Inflatable Ribbed Boat Fender

five-oceans-inflatable-ribbed-boat-fender-hanging

Where to buy Five Oceans Inflatable Ribbed Boat Fender:

The Five Oceans Fender Set is a package that includes 4 inflatable fenders, 4 ropes and a pump. It’s a complete set for smaller boats or a good addition to a larger boat’s arsenal of bumpers.

This package is one of the best examples of a set of ribbed fenders made of marine-grade PVC. This 6.5×23-inch set is a budget option, but one that demanded tested. As a starter set for a smaller boat, like a 30-foot bowrider, they’d do just fine. But for anything more, that required some checking.

We took them sailing over a summer season, testing them with a 36-foot, 11-ton steel-hauled boat. Five Oceans’ fender set passed just fine. Read our in-depth review to find out more.

  • Fender Dimensions: 6.5” x 23”
  • Fender Line Dimensions: ⅜” x 5’
  • Material: High-Quality, Marine-Grade, UV-Resistant PVC
  • Available Fender Colors: Marine Black, Marine Blue, Marine Red, Marine White
  • Kit Inclusions: 4 6.5” x 23” Fenders, 4 ⅜” x 5’ Fender Lines, 4 Needles, Pump

Norestar 4-Pack Ribbed

Norestar 4-Pack Ribbed

Where to buy Norestar 4-Pack Ribbed:

This kit from Norestar comes with 4 inflatable fenders as well as 4 black 5’ x 3/8” fender lines. For smaller craft, 20 feet and under, this will be all you need for docking.

Depending on your necessities, the Norestar bumpers can be hung either vertically or horizontally as they feature a double-eye design. They also come with non-abrasive vertical ribs for both strength and protection as well as a tough marine-grade vinyl construction, which means they can withstand the salt, sun, and attrition.

The 5-½” x 20″ fender protects boats up to 20 feet, the 6-½” x 23″ protects boats up to 25 feet, while the 8-½” x 27” protects boats up to 30 feet.

Available in black and blue.

  • Polyform A Series Buoy

Polyform A Series Buoy

Where to buy Polyform A Series Buoy:

Available in a variety of high-visibility colors and eight different sizes, the Polyform A Series Buoy is a versatile cylindrical fender. Popular as a punching bag for its form and durability, it’s usefulness when landing a heavy boat is tested and true.

The A Series buoy features Polyform’s iconic blue tops and rope eye and it’s made as a single piece of heavy-duty and flexible vinyl for maximum strength and durability.

This buoy has proven itself in the most adverse weather conditions, and besides functioning as a boat fender, it may also be used as a marker buoy, mooring buoy, anchor buoy, and even as a punching bag.

Also, the three largest sizes, the A-5, A-6, and A-7, now come with the Dual Valve system for quick deflation and storage.

To inflate your buoy, you can use either a hand pump or an air compressor. First, unscrew the cap from the air valve with a flathead screwdriver. If using a hand pump, simply insert the nozzle into the air valve and pump until it’s full. In case you use an air compressor, set the compressor to 30 psi or less and inflate the buoy up to a maximum of 2 psi. Once you’re done inflating, use the screwdriver to tighten the cap back into the valve.

  • A-0: 8” x 11.5”
  • A-1: 11” x 15”
  • A-2: 14.5” x 19.5”
  • A-3: 17” x 23”
  • A-4: 20.5” x 27”
  • A-5: 27” x 36”
  • A-6: 34” x 44”
  • A-7: 39” x 54”

Taylor Made Low Freeboard

Taylor Made Low Freeboard 5

Where to buy Taylor Made Low Freeboard:

Made of heavy-duty marine-grade vinyl and boasting an L-shaped form, this novel option from Taylor Made was specifically designed to meet the demands of small vessels such as bass boats, ski boats, and other low freeboard boats.

Due to its unconventional design, the Low Freeboard Boat Fender provides excellent protection for both the gunwales and rub rails. Also, because they conform to the boat’s body, they will stay securely in place and won’t shift around, unlike traditional cylindrical bumpers. For dinghies that can lower into the water with rain, this rail hugging model stays in place.

They can be tied over the cleats to position them higher on the boat and can be easily inflated through a rubber football needle valve.

Available in two sizes and four metallic colors—except for the white one—the Low Freeboard Boat Fender is both beautiful and robust while also offering excellent protection against the docks.

MISSION Boat Gear Sentry

MISSION Boat Gear Sentry

Where to buy MISSION Boat Gear Sentry:

Say goodbye to lines, knots, and all the hassle that usually comes with docking with the next boat fenders.

The Sentry boat bumpers from MISSION feature a modern and cutting-edge design that is both protective and time-saving. They boast a cross-linked closed-cell foam construction—a material that doesn’t absorb water and resists fading from the sun’s damaging UV rays—along with an innovative hanging system, which together with their shape and length protect both the lower and upper parts of the rub rails.

But it doesn’t stop there!

They also align beautifully with the contour of your vessel’s hull, thus preventing them from getting caught on top of the dock or pushed out of position. Plus, their integrated strap system easily attaches to the boat’s cleats and docks for quick and easy setup.

  • Measurements: 22” tall x 9” wide x 5.5” thick

VIVOHOME Vinyl Boat Fender

VIVOHOME Vinyl Boat Fender

Where to buy VIVOHOME Vinyl Boat Fender:

Suitable for boats, yachts, sailboats, rowboats, and docks, this fender kit from VIVOHOME comes with four boat fenders—available in the 6.5 x 24 in., and 8.5 x 27 in. sizes—four 5.2’ ropes, four inflating needles, as well as a hand pump to inflate your bumpers.

This set of fenders boasts an oval design, a heavy-duty marine-grade UV-resistant PVC construction, reinforced eyelets on both ends—so you can safely hang them either vertically or horizontally—as well as vertical ribs for added strength.

They also feature a great buffer effect, which will protect your vessel from damage caused by heavy collisions between hard surfaces.

As previously mentioned, this kit comes with everything you need to easily inflate and install them. And even after a couple of weeks, there have been no issues with deflation whatsoever. They’re also very compact for convenient storage.

The VIVOHOME Vinyl Ribbed Marine Boat Fenders are available in four colors—blue, white, red, and black—and they fit boats from 19 to 29ft.

Extreme Max 3006.7228 BoatTector

Extreme Max 3006.7228 BoatTector

Where to buy Extreme Max 3006.7228 BoatTector:

The BoatTector Contour Fenders from Extreme Max features a wraparound design that protects against hitting the underside of a dock in low tide. It conforms to your boat’s body and protects both the gunwale and hull, along with a closed-cell foam construction so you don’t have to worry about inflating them.

Designed to withstand the wear and tear of the marine environment, they also boast a marine-grade tri-laminate cover, double thermal-bonded seams, and corrosion-proof polycarbonate grommets

Due to their unconventional square design, they fold quite easily for convenient storage. But be aware that because they’re so lightweight, if they’re not securely stowed, they will fly away.

Available in three colors—white, black, and blue—the pack comes with a pair of fenders (24” x 6. 5” x 2. 5”) as well as two fender lines (⅜” x 6’), and for your peace of mind, the brand also offers you a two-year replacement.

Overall, good quality bumpers at a great price. However, they’re best suited for small boats—16 feet or less—and calm waters as opposed to ocean use.

  • EVA foam in thermal sealed laminate
  • Measurements: 24” x 6. 5” x 2. 5”

Attwood Softside 3-Pack

Attwood Softside 3-Pack

Where to buy Attwood Softside 3-Pack:

The Attwood boat fenders only come in one size, one color, and absolutely no inflation is needed. And although they are simple as they come, they do exactly what you expect them to: offer great protection for your boat with the added bonus of being budget-friendly.

Made from tough and lightweight polymeric material, these fenders feature a seamless one-piece construction, an oval shape together with ribbed sides to prevent them from rolling against the hull, as well as double-molded eye ends for extra strength.

The pack comes with 3 already inflated fenders but sadly, no liners.

Ideal for pontoon boats , these bumpers do a great job at protecting your vessel and they also seem to be quite durable—only time will tell.

  • Soft Polymeric
  • Measurements: 5”

Extreme Max 3006.7384 BoatTector

Extreme Max 3006.7384 BoatTector

Where to buy Extreme Max 3006.7384 BoatTector:

Extreme Max makes another bumper value pack featuring four 6. 5” x 22” boat fenders and four 3/8” x 5’ fender lines.

These bumpers from Extreme Max boast a sturdy PVC construction along with thick walls and reinforced ribs for improved protection, as well as a needle valve so you can adjust each fender to your desired pressure.

In addition, reinforced molded eyelets at each end of the fender for added strength and durability, 12 bright colors for you to choose from, and a two-year warranty.

All in all, these are great quality utility fenders at an amazing price. However, the included ropes are not as sturdy as the ones from other brands, and even though they say the fenders are UV-stabilized and chemically-resistant, their vibrant colors haven’t held for long.

  • Fender: 6. 5” x 22”
  • Rope: 3/8” x 5’

Boat Fenders | Buyer’s Guide

As you’ve just seen from our list above, boat fenders come in all shapes and sizes. And in order for them to correctly shield your vessel from possible damages, they should be the right size, shape, and amount.

That’s why we’ve prepared this buyer’s guide to help you decide which type of fenders are better suited to your boat.

So here are the main things to consider before buying boat fenders:

Get the right size fender. Heavier boats require bigger sizes.

Types of Fenders

There is a great variety of boat fenders on the market right now. Although most of them only have one function in mind, which is to protect your vessel, others will also serve different purposes as well as different boat sizes.

These are the differences between the main types of boat fenders:

Cylindrical double-hole

  • Most popular option
  • It comes with rope eyes at both ends
  • It can be hung either vertically with one line or horizontally with two lines
  • Great for short and lightweight vessels

Cylindrical center-hole

  • Also known as hole-through-middle (HTM) boat fenders
  • It can be hung either vertically or horizontally using only one line
  • It provides more cushioning than the double-hole model, which makes it ideal for large boats

Cylindrical single-hole

  • It is the most basic type of boat bumper
  • It can only be hung vertically
  • Ideal for rafting two boats together
  • Mostly used by large powerboats and commercial vessels
  • Commonly used as mooring and fishing line buoys
  • More difficult to store

Other types

  • Low freeboard fenders:  This type of fender sits high on the hull and hangs inward over the gunwale, which makes it ideal for smaller vessels such as bass boats.
  • Transom mounted fenders : As the name implies, this type of fender protects your boat’s transom or swim step when you dock from the stern.

All inflatable boat fenders will either come in vinyl or PVC. Vinyl is the cheaper material, but that does not mean vinyl fenders will be low quality. As long as they are cared for, they will last many years. Rinse them every once in a while to prevent algae from growing too thickly.

PVC is the same material used for  inflatable paddle boards . It’s a more durable material that can withstand more exposure and resists puncturing a little more than vinyl.

To decide which size of boat fenders suit your vessel best, you need to consider 3 things: your boat’s length, weight, and where you moor. This last one is very important because choppy and windy mooring conditions will require more fenders as well as bigger ones.

For different boats, different fenders are needed. Motor yachts will require very big bumpers because of their weight and higher railing. For pontoon boats , you could get away with having several smaller ones to save space when they’re not in use.

A good rule of thumb is that cylindrical fenders should have 1 inch of diameter for every 5 feet of boat length, while round fenders should have 2 inches per 5 feet of boat length.

So, if you own a 20’ – 25’ boat, you should invest in 6”- 6.5” cylindrical boat bumpers or 15” round boat fenders.

Size matters sometimes. But even smaller boat fenders will do the job. The weight of a boat determines how much a fender will be stressed and worked.

Number of Fenders

Having the proper number of boat fenders is as important as having the correct shape and size.

A general rule of thumb for the number of fenders you should bring aboard is 1 fender per 10 feet of waterline, with a minimum of three overall.

So, for example, if you own a 20-foot boat, you should carry 3 fenders (6”- 6.5” cylindrical fenders or 15” round ones).

Keep in mind that the more, the better—less chance of hull damage—but also remember that you’re going to need enough room to store them—which brings us to our next topic.

When buying boat fenders, you should also think about where you plan to keep them while you’re on the water.

Although most fenders are inflatable, having to constantly inflate and deflate them is a rather inconvenient task. So make sure you have a designated spot in your vessel to tuck them away while you’re sailing.

On top of that, remember that their shapes will also matter, as cylindrical fenders will be easier to store as opposed to round ones.

You can also invest in fender racks. They will keep your fenders securely out of the way when you’re on the water, while also conveniently at hand when you need them.

Now we turn to you!

What’s your favorite set of boat fenders?

Share with us your experience as well as questions you might have in the comment section below!

Frequently asked questions

The answer to this question will depend on the size of your boat, mooring conditions, and of course, your budget. It’s not easy to pick one specific best boat bumpers and that is why we’ve created this extensive guide on the best boat fenders.

However, at this very moment, these are our own favorites:

  • Polyform G Series
  • Taylor Made Products 31006 Low Freeboard Boat Fender
  • MISSION Boat Gear Sentry Boat Dock Fender Bumper
  • VIVOHOME Vinyl Ribbed Marine Fender

(read full reviews of each on DIVEIN.com – click the links above)

Also known as boat bumpers, boat fenders are cushions that prevent your watercraft from bumping against other vessels, dock, or pier, so as to avoid scratches and damages to your watercraft’s hull and coating .

Fenders must be placed at the correct height, otherwise, they won’t offer your boat proper protection. Hang the fenders just above the waterline so that their bottoms just skim the water’s surface. This will limit the swing arc, thus preventing the dock from pushing the fender up and out of position.

A good rule of thumb for boat fender size is that cylindrical fenders should have 1 inch of diameter for every 5 feet of boat length, while round fenders should have 2 inches per 5 feet of boat length.

To tie fenders to your boat, first, remember to hang them above the waterline so that their bottoms just skim the water’s surface, and also, make sure to tie them to a solid anchor point, such as a station or a cleat. Do not tie boat fenders on lifelines as they are not made to withstand the stress.

Next, take your line and go over the railing, then behind it, then over the railing again, and then back up. This is what’s known as a clove hitch knot.

For better illustration, here’s a short video with two easy ways to tie a clove hitch knot:

You can wash your boat fenders with either a mild detergent or soap—mineral spirits such as paint thinner works too. Just remember not to use harsh cleaning agents such as acetone and lacquer thinner as they will damage your bumpers.

You can also use a stiff brush for scrubbing.

To make cleaning your fenders a less demanding task, give them a thorough clean after each use, or better yet, invest in washable fender covers for easy cleaning

Boat fenders should be used both at the port and starboard sides of your boat, for cushioning all the points of impact. Extra fenders are also useful when docking to manually slide between two points of contact when needed.

We’ve looked at this one. Good thing to add to our test update. Cheers Kenneth.

Good Morning, you need to assess the Five Oceans Fenders, well-positioned in the Amazon ranking, TOP 10. Good quality, very complete kit.

Good afternoon Adrian. Thanks for the tip. Have been trying them out for the past couple of weeks. A review is on the way. You’re right they are a nice and complete kit. Inflate fairly easily and hold air after some serious days in the sun. The quality of the rope–and its length–is just fine and the added touch of a reflective strip at the top is very visible and nice for the evenings. Review and images on their way.

Torben Lonne

Thank you, we’ll take a look at them next time we test.

Size matters sometimes. But even smaller boat fenders will do the job. The weight of a boat determines how much a fender will be stressed and worked.

9 Best Boat Fenders & Fender Covers – (Reviews 2022)

It’s so easy to get your boat damaged when passing other vessels and tying to the docks, especially if you don’t have the best boat fender already installed. This piece of marine equipment can help you protect your boat from harmful impacts but also make it appear a bit bulkier, and thus, more attractive.

If you have never used these before but you want to ensure the exterior of your boat remains sleek for many years to come, check out our reviews. These also include the best boat fender cover – an additional piece of equipment that protects the fenders and adds another layer of protection to your boat.

See The Quick Comparison Chart

What Actually Are Boat Fenders and How Do They Work?

Boat fenders act like a safeguard to your vessel. You can call them a barrier or a cushion – either way, this piece of marine equipment acts like a tampon zone between your boat and other boats, as well as the pier and dock.

If you wouldn’t be using fenders, your boat would get easily damaged due to numerous impacts it faces when you are on the water. Thus, boat fenders absorb shocks that would make even the newest hulls look like they are at least a decade old.

So, now that you know why it is essential to protect your boat with fenders, let’s jump to another important section – types of boat fenders.

Types and Uses of Boat Fenders

1. cylindrical/long/walking fenders.

Best Boat Fender

Subcategories of this type of fender include center-cored long fenders and two-eyed fenders. Both types work great and you choose them by preference.

Cylindrical fenders work best with protecting your boat during docking. If you mount them horizontally, it will be much easier to attach them to the dock as you will have two attaching points that secure the tie.

2. Round/Ball Fenders

Ball fenders are named like this due to their shape. Round, filled with air, made of sturdy materials (usually it is plastic), these boat fenders are robust and reliable.

Due to their shape, these fenders absorb impacts effortlessly. Using them is a breeze too. Just throw it overboard and it will protect your boat from damage. This type works best when moving through tight spaces, surpassing other sailboats, or when you are going in or out of locks.

Don’t get confused if you find round/ball fenders under the name of standby fenders. Their strongest point is that they are versatile. You can use them to protect your boat but to mark your anchor location as well.

3. Specialty Fenders

Specialty boat fenders have limited usage. For instance, these can protect rub rails or gunwales with boats that have low freeboards. One of the subcategories of specialty fenders – fender cushions prevent algae and mildew piling on your boat.

You can mount transom fenders if you want to protect the stern or the swim platform of your boat. Generally, specialty fenders are more affordable than round and cylinder boat fenders but still add solid protection to your vessel.

Extreme Max 3006.7204 Boat Fender Value 2-Pack

Suitable for most types of vessels, including yachts, small boats, navigation buoys, mooring buoys, etc, no doubt these boat fenders would fit your watercraft as well. Although these are bulkier to store, this is a minor drawback when comparing it to the overall value X-Hiabei provides.

  • 1-year warranty.
  • You can even use these as punching bags.
  • The color will start fading relatively quickly.

Boat Fender Buying Guide

Best Boat Fender Cover

1. Material

Boat fenders should protect your boat from outer impacts. Yet, as these act as an absorbent, they are first to face the shock. If the fenders you are using are not made of durable and resistant materials, these won’t protect your boat in the long run. In the worst case, low-quality fenders will even damage your vessel additionally.

High-quality rubber is the best material when it comes to fenders, as it doesn’t fade over time and is resistant to wind, shock waves, and other environmental impacts.

Not all fenders feature the same weight. If you would get a fender that’s too heavy for the type of your boat, you might experience slight wiggling when on the water. This applies to lightweight vessels in the first place, as larger and more massive boats can take heavier fenders. Yet, always check on the specs of the unit you have in mind to determine whether these would be too much for your watercraft.

It is always good to have soma spare fenders on your boat. Yet, depending on the type of fenders you are using, you might have a hard time storing them on your vessel. Most of the time, sailors store their fenders under the seats. Yet, taking them out can be a bit tricky as you can damage them in the process.

Be thoughtful of the space on your boat when buying fenders. Round fenders take more space in general, but you should still have 2 of these at least near at hand.

4. Cleaning

Would you ever guess boat fenders can get messy as hell? Any piece of marine equipment that sits outdoors is more prone to getting dirty, especially those pieces that come in contact with the water.

You should take proper care of your fenders and take algae and mildew off as soon as you get off the boat. Again, rubber is the type of material that doesn’t require too much of your effort to invest in cleaning.

Boat fender covers can protect your fenders, but these require some cleaning as well. Polyester and acrylic yard are a breeze to clean.

5. Accessories

Boat Fender Buying Guide

No matter if your fenders come deflated or pre-inflated, you will need a pump to readjust them once they fatten. Usually, a regular pump would do but special valves require special pumps. Some manufacturers are thoughtful of this requirement and provide a pump within the package.

If you have a pair of old fenders and used a regular pump with them, it doesn’t mean this pump would suit the new fenders too, so you might need a pump adapter.

You want to position your fenders correctly, which may include tying several knots (depending on the size of your vessel). If you would be tying multiple knots, you will also need a height adjuster. Only a few manufacturers include this device with their fenders.

Boat fenders come in different colors. Yet, the exposure to salt water and sun rays can make their color fade. Once this happens, your fenders won’t look as sleek as they used to. The same applies to fender covers. That’s why t would be best to find products that are resistant to UV rays as they will retain their original appearance for longer.

Features To Consider When Choosing Boat Fender Covers

When looking for most of the pieces of marine equipment, including a boat anchor , trolling motor , etc, you should be wary of your boat’s size. We recommend opting for a fender that is larger in size than your vessel’s length indicates. This applies to the boat being in choppy waters in the first place.

A rule of thumb when buying boat fenders is to choose a fender that is double the size of your boat. In other words, it takes 2 inches of a fender for every foot of your boat when you are buying round fenders. With cylindrical fenders, go for a 1:1 ratio.

However, although this is a standard, we recommend going for a slightly larger fender. Choosing a smaller-in-size fender would create too much pressure of the boat’s size to it and the fender would get flattened quickly. Thus, it wouldn’t provide any protection to your boat. Yet, if you would get fenders that are too large, you would have a hard time mounting them.

2. Number of Fenders

Features To Consider When Choosing Boat Fender Covers

If you have a 32-feet vessel, it would be wise to have at least 2 fenders per side. Also, a couple of spare fenders ( 2 minimum) would come handy if the ones you are using flatten during your stay on the water. With larger boats than 32-feet, you will need 4 fenders per side, as well as replacement units.

Also, it would be great to have fenders of different types if you want to ensure your boat is protected at the fullest. Use at least 2 fenders of a different type that will help you when you need backup when you are approaching the dock or when the wind is howling.

3. Fender Position

If you want boat fenders to protect your vessel the right way, you have to place them properly. Generally, set your fenders so they are slightly above the water surface (one to two inches). This way, the water won’t push them out of the way when you would be coming at the dock.

The lower you tie the fenders – the better. It would be best to tie them by using something solid, like a metal handle.

How To Tie Boat Fenders?

How To Tie Boat Fenders

  • Once it seems like the fenders are adjusted properly, add some extra half-hitches to secure the bond.
  • Take the working end and pull it over the front of the rail, then round it up.
  • As you do so, make sure the standing end is properly connected to the fender. It should cross the original line and wrap around the rail.
  • Tie the working end on the front of the rail and tighten it.
  • Now the fender is adjusted, tie one to two half-stitches to prevent it from slipping.

Safety Tips

  • It would be best to use polypropylene rope when tying the knots as this type is more flexible than nylon.
  • Always have a couple of spare fenders on the boat if you plan on staying longer on the water.
  • Keep your fenders clean so they can last longer. This will prevent the fenders from flattening when you are sailing.

FAQ About Boat Fenders

1. do all boat fenders come with ropes.

No, they don’t. Just like some fenders come inflated, others deflated, some fenders come with ropes and some don’t. Keep this in mind when buying fenders, as buying a rope would be an extra cost.

2. What Size and How Many Boat Fenders Do I Need?

If you are buying cylindrical fenders, you will need 1 foot of fender per 1 foot of your boat. With round fenders, you will need 2 feet of fender per 1 foot of the vessel.

We would advise you getting at least 3 fenders for your 10-feet boat. Some fenders come in pairs, so you can get two pairs as well. Although fenders take some space on-board, the more you have – the safer you will be when on the water.

3. How To Maintain Boat Fenders?

Boat fenders require low-maintenance. Use water and mild detergent or soap to clean off salt, algae, and mildew deposits. Boat fender covers can also ensure a longer lifespan of your boat fenders.

Could you find the best boat fender and best boat fender cover among our reviews? These amazing pieces are a part of protective gear you should have in mind if you want to take proper care of your vessel.

Depending on the surroundings and your boat, you can choose different types of boat fenders, although it would be best to have at least two of each category. Now that you are more confident about getting the right units, we will recommend you to check our other marine equipment guides that will bring you total peace of mind when you are on the water.

Boat Fenders: how to choose and use them properly

  • Camilla Ruffa
  • April 19, 2024

Fenders play a crucial role in preserving the integrity of boats when they are moored or approaching a dock, protecting them from impacts against the dock or other vessels.

But what exactly are fenders? What models exist and in what situations is it advisable to use them? In this article, we will explore in detail everything there is to know about fenders: from their definition and composition to their operating principles and the importance of using them correctly.

Boat Fenders: Definition

A fender is an object, usually spherical, cylindrical, or flat, used to protect surfaces from impacts. On boats, fenders are positioned on the gunwales, stern, or bow to prevent accidental collisions or rubbing against the dock or other boats.

The material they are made of can vary depending on the model: they can be hollow, solid, rubbery, or spongy, but the most common ones have an outer PVC or rubber coating and an internal air chamber. Their absorbing and elastic properties make them indispensable tools on board.

Types: a comprehensive overview

“Depending on the surface to be protected, there are different types of fenders: for tenders, for docks, for boats, for specific surfaces, etc.

Each of them has a precise shape and composition for the intended use. Let’s examine them in detail.

Cylindrical Fender

Cylindrical Fenders

When positioned vertically, it provides protection to the boat’s hull even in the presence of tidal variations, while when applied horizontally, it offers protection over a wider surface area of the boat.

Fenders with this shape typically feature an outer rubber coating and an internal air chamber, adjustable through a valve.

Spherical Fender

Spherical fenders

Flat Fender

The flat fender has a rigid and solid structure. Thanks to its slim shape and compact size, it represents an excellent solution when space is limited. Typically made of foam, sometimes with a nylon coating depending on the model, flat fenders are designed for versatility in usage and provide ample protection in confined spaces.

An interesting characteristic of these fenders is that when they are not actively protecting the boat, they can double as cushions or small tables. On the downside, however, they have low impact resistance and are very lightweight. This makes them susceptible to strong winds and rough seas, rendering them vulnerable to damage.

Bow fenders

How many fenders to apply to the hull

The most common question on the topic is: “How many fenders do I need to have on board?” The contrast between limited space available and the need to protect the boat opens up various scenarios and possibilities. Certainly, the choice of fender type influences the final outcome, because using only spherical fenders does provide better protection, but requires much more space when not in use on the bulwarks.

Therefore, the type of fenders, their diameter, and the length of the boat all play a role in defining an ideal number of fenders to always keep on board.

Following a theoretical approach, we should position the fenders approximately 2 meters apart, taking into account their diameter, which can range from 9 to 50 cm, depending on the boat’s size and the height of the bulwarks.

For example, on a 10-meter sailboat , we can apply 3 cylindrical fenders, each with a diameter of 20-25 cm, on each side.

Still theoretically, the size of the fenders should ensure coverage of ⅔ of the vertical surface of the topsides.

How to secure the fenders

The most common way to secure the fenders to the hull is by making a loop at the end of the fender and tying a cleat hitch (also called a clove hitch knot) onto the lifelines or the base of the stanchion with the other end of the line.

The length of the line varies depending on the height of the topsides. Generally, it should be long enough to allow the fender to be lowered to the water’s surface in case there are very low obstacles to safeguard against.

boat protection

How much to inflate them

In nautical stores and marinas, it’s possible to purchase fenders already inflated, but due to space and size considerations, it’s more likely that elsewhere (such as on online shopping platforms), they are sold deflated and flattened.

Therefore, it becomes important to know how much to inflate them and with which tools.

Firstly, there are two types of valves for inflating fenders: screw valves and needle valves. Screw valves feature a safety screw that seals the opening, while needle valves provide a direct path to the air chamber.

Fenders can be inflated using a simple compressor, available in various workshops, nautical stores, or gas stations, or with a manual pump.

Regarding pressure, manufacturers usually provide guidelines on how much they should be inflated. Typically, fenders require a pressure of about 0.15-0.20 bar under ambient conditions of 20°C. As the temperature increases, the pressure should be reduced.

In the absence of a pressure gauge, the operation to determine if they have been inflated correctly is as follows: applying pressure with a finger on the fender, it should flex by about 1 cm.

Where to store the fenders: the stowage

Although extremely useful, fenders can be bulky, so unless you decide to inflate and deflate them every time you use them, you need to find a suitable place to store them. Lockers, if spacious enough, are the ideal place to stow them because they are enclosed spaces, away from the sun and weather elements responsible for fender wear and tear.

If lockers don’t provide enough space, there are several fender supports available on the market that can be positioned on the deck and railings.

As for spherical fenders, which are more difficult to stow, they can be hung astern, on the pulpit, or on the stanchions, ensuring that the downwind ones don’t end up in the water in windy conditions.

boat fenders storage

In conclusion, fenders are an essential tool for protecting the boat as a whole during mooring and unmooring maneuvers. Unlike cars, boats float on an unstable, never-still surface, making it practically impossible to approach any maneuver without risking hitting a dock or another boat. The same applies to moorings in the harbor: boats are never perfectly still, and fenders are the only barrier between the hull and the dock.

They are the only protection against chafing, impacts, and damages. Knowing how to use them correctly is not only very important but also marks the boundary between a boat at risk of damage and one moored safely.

  • Fenders for Boats: A Comprehensive Guide to Marine Fendering

When it comes to protecting boats from damage caused by impact with docks, other vessels, or even natural elements, marine fenders play a vital role. Fenders act as a cushion, absorbing the shock and preventing potential harm to boats. In this article, we will delve into the world of boat fenders, exploring their different types, their importance, and how to choose the right fenders for your watercraft.

1. Understanding Fenders for Boats

Boat fenders, also known as marine fenders, are essential accessories designed to safeguard boats and docks from damage. These protective devices create a buffer zone, preventing any hard contact that could lead to scrapes, dents, or more serious structural harm. Fenders are often made from materials like rubber, foam, or plastic, each offering specific advantages such as durability and resistance to UV rays.

2. Types of Boat Fenders

There are various types of boat fenders available in the market, each catering to specific needs. Some common fender types include:

2.1. Cylindrical Fenders

Cylindrical fenders are the most basic and widely used type. They come in different sizes and are suitable for various boat types. Their versatile design allows them to be installed both horizontally and vertically. Cylindrical fenders are particularly effective for boats that have a straightforward hull design.

2.2. D-shaped Fenders

As the name suggests, D-shaped fenders have a flat surface on one side, making them ideal for protecting flat areas on boats, such as gunwales and hull sides. They can be easily attached to the boat's surface, and their unique shape provides excellent protection against impact.

2.3. Cone Fenders

Cone fenders are highly effective in absorbing large amounts of energy, making them suitable for heavy-duty applications and areas with high berthing energy. The conical shape allows them to distribute pressure evenly, reducing the stress on the boat's hull during docking.

2.4. Arch Fenders

Arch fenders are designed to distribute pressure evenly, making them perfect for vessels with a delicate hull or where mounting space is limited. They are commonly used on piers, quays, and other structures where the boat may come into contact with protruding edges.

2.5. Pneumatic Fenders

Pneumatic fenders, also known as inflatable fenders, provide excellent protection and are commonly used for larger vessels and in ship-to-ship transfers. These fenders can be easily inflated and deflated, making them convenient for storage and transport.

3. Selecting the Right Boat Fenders

Choosing the right boat fenders is crucial to ensure proper protection and avoid potential damage. Several factors should be considered when selecting fenders for your boat:

3.1. Boat Size

The size of your boat plays a significant role in determining the size and quantity of fenders required. Larger vessels typically need more substantial fenders to provide adequate protection. Additionally, the boat's weight and draft should be taken into account when choosing fenders.

3.2. Berthing Conditions

Evaluate the berthing conditions of your usual docking area. Understanding the water currents, tidal fluctuations, and the type of dock or pier will help in choosing fenders with the appropriate strength and durability. For areas with rough waters or high berthing energy, stronger and more resilient fenders are recommended.

3.3. Type of Vessel

Different types of vessels may require specific fenders based on their design and structure. For example, powerboats and sailboats might benefit from different fender types. Consider the boat's shape and contact points to select the fenders that will offer the best protection.

3.4. Fender Material

Fenders are made from various materials, each with its own set of advantages. Rubber fenders are popular for their durability and resistance to abrasion. Foam fenders are lightweight and easy to handle. Plastic fenders, on the other hand, are resistant to punctures and UV rays. Consider the specific needs of your boat and the prevailing weather conditions to choose the most suitable fender material.

4. installing boat fenders.

Proper installation of boat fenders is essential to ensure maximum protection. Follow these steps for correct fender installation:

4.1. Positioning

Place the fenders at the right height to match the dock or other vessel's contact points. Proper positioning is crucial for effective protection against impact. Ensure that the fenders are neither too high nor too low, and secure them firmly using appropriate fender lines or ropes.

4.2. Spacing

Determine the optimal spacing between fenders to cover the boat's vulnerable areas effectively. Spacing may vary depending on the fender type and boat size. The goal is to create a continuous buffer zone along the boat's sides and critical points of contact.

4.3. Adjustability

Make sure the fenders can be easily adjusted to accommodate changes in water levels or berthing conditions. Tidal fluctuations or changes in the water level may require fender adjustment to maintain effective protection.

4.4. Regular Inspection

Inspect the fenders regularly for signs of wear and tear. Fenders exposed to harsh conditions, such as extreme temperatures or strong UV rays, may deteriorate over time. Replace any damaged or heavily worn fenders to ensure continuous protection.

5. Maintenance and Care

To prolong the life of your boat fenders and maintain their effectiveness, follow these maintenance tips:

5.1. Regular Inspections

Check fenders at least once a month for signs of wear and tear, and inspect them after any significant impact or harsh weather conditions. Regular inspections allow you to identify any issues early on and take appropriate action.

5.2. Cleaning

Clean fenders periodically to remove dirt, salt, and grime, which can degrade the fender material over time. Use mild soap and water to clean the fenders and avoid using harsh chemicals that may damage the fender's surface.

5.3. Proper Storage

Store fenders in a dry and cool place when not in use, protecting them from harsh weather conditions. If the fenders are inflatable, ensure they are properly deflated and folded for compact storage.

Marine fenders are essential accessories for any boat owner, providing the necessary protection against potential damage during docking and berthing. By understanding the different types of fenders available and following the guidelines for selection, installation, and maintenance, boat owners can ensure their vessels remain safe and in excellent condition for years to come.

How to Choose the Best Boat Fender Type, Number, Location and More

How to Choose the Best Boat Fender Type, Number, Location and More

This article focuses on boat fenders, also known as boat bumpers. We'll cover everything you need to know about boat fenders and maybe even some things you don't!

Video: Boat Fender / Bumper Essentials

The video below will hit on all the crucial points we'll make in this article, so if you prefer a video format, go on and hit play! For more in-depth information, read on.

Boat fenders are essential equipment for any boat to protect the hull from contact with docks, pilings and other boats. Boats are expensive but fenders are not; always have the appropriate amount, type and size of fenders or bumpers onboard, and use them properly. It’s better to have too many than too few!

It is important to be prepared for all sorts of mooring conditions, from more extreme examples such as docking in hurricane force winds to the more typical conditions your boat will be in every day.

How to choose boat fenders

There are a variety of fender types to suit different situations. Generally speaking, sausage or cylindrical double-eye fenders are better for shorter, lighter vessels while center hole, round, and hybrid cylindrical-round fenders are best for larger, heavier vessels. There are also specialty fenders, such as transom fenders, for specific mooring arrangements.

Cylindrical double eye fenders are typically hung vertically, but may be hung horizontally with two fender lines. Center hole fenders are typically hung horizontally, but may be hung vertically, with one fender line running through the middle and figure eight knots at each end. Hang fenders vertically when mooring against docks or other flat structures; hang fenders horizontally to fend against protruding structures such as pilings and prevent roll-off.

There are plenty of specialty fenders suited for limited usage. If you have a low freeboard, there are fenders developed to protect the gunwales and rub rails of your boat. Fender cushions are particularly useful for protection against pilings. Transom fenders are designed for the swim platform of your boat or the stern of a sailboat. Many specialty fenders will add protection to your boat for relatively few dollars, and this amounts to cheap insurance compared to costly repair bills.

Fender Type

There are a number of popular fender manufactures on the market:

Norestar Boat Fenders

Norestar  makes rugged double-eye and HTM (hole-through-the-middle) ribbed fenders. They can be purchased as singles or in packs of two or four with or without lines for a discount. They have also expanded into other styles such as Flat EVA, Contour, Wheel, and Dock Fenders and fender accessories. Norestar's aim is best value per dollar spent so that you get the best possible quality fender for the lowest price.

Supafend Boat Fenders

Supafend makes "one-piece" rotationally molded fenders with non-marking and UV stabilized Marine Grade PVC. They have consistent wall thickness and heavy-duty rope eyelet ends. The fenders are tested before they leave the factory, ensuring maximum fendering durability and reliability. Supafend marine products have been installed extensively on boats under harsh New Zealand weather conditions and have excelled. They have cylindrical double-eye fenders for boats 20' to 55'.

Polyform Boat Fenders

Polyform makes fenders with several configurations that include twin eyes, center hole or round design. They have compact fenders designed for trailered boats. Their HTM-series is their "hole-through-the-middle line" and is designed for a wide variety of applications for boats from 20 to 50 feet long. They also have round buoys and mooring balls.

Taylor Made Boat Fenders

This company has both round cylindrical and oval cylindrical fenders. They produce fenders for a 10 foot dinghy or a 50 foot cruiser. They also manufacture a variety of specialty fenders that include low-board fenders, as well as a mermaid-shaped fender in your choice of pink or white.

Megafend Yacht Fenders

Megafend provides boaters with an easily inflatable vinyl fender that's perfect for boats with limited stowage space. They also have a solid core, hole-through-the-middle fender that is engineered for heavy marine use. All their fenders and buoys are available in many standard and custom sizes.

There are three primary considerations when choosing boat fenders:

  • Boat Weight
  • Boat Length
  • Mooring Conditions

Most sizing charts account for mainly item one above, but it is important to use common sense to address the other two. If your boat is particularly heavy for its size, or the conditions you moor in are or will be particularly harsh, use larger, heavier duty fenders than called for in sizing charts.

The general rule of thumb is that a cylindrical fender should have 1" of diameter (2" for round fenders) for every 4' to 5' of boat length. See the sizing chart below for more specific sizing and type guidelines.

Under 10' 3" -- Cylindrical Double-Eye, Hybrid
10'-15' 3" - 4" 9" Cylindrical Double-Eye, Hybrid
15'-20' 5" - 5.5" 12" Cylindrical Double-Eye, Center Hole, Hybrid
20'-25' 6" - 6.5" 15" Cylindrical Double-Eye, Center Hole, Hybrid, Round
25'-35' 8" - 8.5" 18" Cylindrical Double-Eye, Center Hole, Hybrid, Round
35'-50' 10.5" - 12" 21" Hybrid, Center Hole,  Round
50'-60' 12" 27" Hybrid, Center Hole,  Round

Number and placement

Fenders won’t do their job if they’re not deployed properly. Attention should be given to the number and position of fenders on your boat.

fenders hanging off boat

There is a rule of thumb for fender number: use one fender per 10’ of waterline, with a minimum of three fenders.   So a 20' boat would need 3 fenders and a 40' would need 4. At least one fender must be placed at maximum beam, with others distributed fore and aft. When rafting, more fenders are a good idea, three at maximum beam and two – round fenders are best – set fore and aft. Again, more fenders are better than fewer, so I’d advise against meeting only minimum requirements.

To position fenders correctly, hang them so that the bottoms of the fenders just skim the water’s surface, and then raise them an inch or two. This prevents the dock from pushing the fender up and out of position while limiting marine growth on the fender. Tie fenders to a solid anchor point, such as a station or a cleat instead of lifelines, which are not made to handle the stress. Also tie fenders as low as possible on the boat. This limits swing arc, ensuring that the fender will better maintain its intended position.

Cleaning, Stowage and Accessories

Clean fenders with soap and water. Do not use harsh cleaning agents such as acetone or related products as they will damage your fenders. Better yet, don’t let your fenders get dirty in the first place; washable fender covers are available to keep your fenders clean and protected from the elements.

folding fender rack

If you follow the advice here and carry extra fenders, you’ll need a place to stow them. You can simply stow the fenders in a storage locker or under a seat. However, this can make access to the fenders inconvenient. Fender racks are great for this as they keep fenders both accessible and out of the way.

Fender racks generally come in two types: folding racks and permanent racks. Folding racks, such as the   Norestar Folding Fender Racks   fold down when the fenders are removed, freeing up deck space.

Non-Folding racks like the Taylor Made Racks do not fold down which means they take up deck space regardless of whether the fenders are deployed or not and they are generally more expensive. However, they're more sturdy than non-folding racks.

Accessories

There are a number of accessories available to make working with your fenders more convenient. A few very useful ones are   fender hand pumps (alternately, most sports ball pumps work) to quickly and easily add air to a fender whenever required, fender height adjusters, to adjust fender height instantly without having to tie knots, and of course fender lines, to keep your fenders properly secured. These products are definitely worth a look.

Final Words

Protect your investment! You’ll be far better off spending a relatively small amount on a good set of fenders than spending a very large amount on boat repair.

  • Be sure to get the appropriate sized fenders for your boat and don’t forget to buy some extras
  • Get a variety of fender types to prepare for the different mooring situations you’ll encounter
  • Have a stowage strategy that allows for easy accessibly, yet keeps fenders from getting underfoot
  • Keep your fenders clean; they’ll look better and last longer
  • Check out accessories such as hand pumps and fender height adjusters to make your boating life that much easier

Happy Boating!

Yacht Fender

motor yacht fenders

Yacht fenders are widely used in large ships, yachts, offshore platforms and ports, and can be fully adapted to ships. It uses compressed air as a buffer medium to absorb ship collision energy. Therefore, compared with the general compression rubber fender, it has the advantages of high energy absorption, small reaction force, and large contact area with the ship. There are two main types of yacht fenders. The A series fenders have an international style and are widely used in the mooring and berthing of small ships. The F series can be applied to all ship sizes.

Ukraine war latest: Ukraine reportedly hits aviation training center in Russia's Voronezh Oblast

Key developments on April 9:

Ukraine hits aviation training center in Russia's Voronezh Oblast, source says

Russian attacks against 3 Ukrainian regions kill 2, injure 10

Germany to deliver 20 additional armored vehicles to ukraine, iaea: drone attack reported on zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant's training center, prosecutors investigating executions of 54 ukrainian pows by russia.

Ukrainian drones attacked a Russian aviation training center in the city of Borisoglebsk in Russia's Voronezh Oblast overnight on April 9, a representative of Ukraine's military intelligence (HUR), who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the Kyiv Independent.

The intelligence agency's spokesman later confirmed there was an attack, without clearly saying that Ukraine was behind it.

The Russian Telegram channel Astra claimed the aviation center for flight personnel training was attacked by two drones . The drones allegedly exploded, damaging the facade of the building and windows, according to the Telegram channel.

The representative of Ukraine's military intelligence told the Kyiv Independent that the operation was conducted by HUR without providing further details.

Andrii Yusov, a spokesperson for Ukraine's military intelligence agency, said that an aircraft factory was targeted in Russia's Borisoglebsk.

"We will not disclose any details, but according to preliminary information, the main production facilities of the enterprise were affected," Yusov told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) on April 9.

Russian air defenses shot down two drones over Belgorod Oblast , two over Voronezh Oblast , and a Neptune anti-ship missile near the occupied Crimean coast overnight, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed.

The Kyiv Independent could not independently verify the claims.

Ukraine has intensified strikes against military and industrial targets in Russia in recent weeks. On April 5, a joint operation of military intelligence and the Armed Forces reportedly hit the Yeysk, Engels-2, and Kursk airfields.

Russia allegedly lost seven military aircraft during the drone attack on the Yeysk airbase in Krasnodar Krai in Russia, a source at Ukraine's military intelligence (HUR) told the Kyiv Independent.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and Ukraine's military allegedly carried out an attack against the Russian Morozovsk airbase overnight on April 5, sources familiar with the matter told the Kyiv Independent. Su-34 fighter-bombers and Su-27 fighters were reportedly based at the airfield.

At least six military aircraft were destroyed, and another eight were damaged, according to the source. Furthermore, about 20 Russian soldiers were reportedly killed or wounded.

Russian attacks against Donetsk, Chernihiv, and Kharkiv oblasts on April 9 killed two people and wounded another 10, according to the latest updates by regional authorities.

In one of the latest attacks, Russian forces hit the outskirts of Sloviansk in Donetsk Oblast, injuring three people, Governor Vadym Filaskhin reported.

Sloviansk was hit in the afternoon, and three people aged 53, 64, and 66 suffered injuries, Filaskhin said on Telegram.

Russia has recently increased attacks against Sloviansk and nearby settlements, according to Vadym Liakh , the head of the city’s military administration.

A Russian attack on the town of Semenivka in Chernihiv Oblast earlier on the same day killed a woman, according to Governor Viacheslav Chaus. Russia used artillery and multiple-launch rocket systems to carry out the attack, Chaus said on Telegram.

Russian forces also attacked a civilian enterprise in downtown Kharkiv with guided aerial bombs on April 9, injuring at least four people, Mayor Ihor Terekhov said on Telegram.

The buildings caught fire and were destroyed as a result of the latest attack, Kharkiv Oblast Governor Oleh Syniehubov reported .

Russia recently intensified attacks against Ukraine's second-largest city with the use of missiles, glide bombs, and drones, reportedly destroying almost all of its energy infrastructure.

Russian forces also struck Kostiantynivka and Sokil in Donetsk Oblast, killing one person and wounding three more, Governor Vadym Filashkin reported.

Settlements in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk Oblast suffer from daily Russian attacks due to their proximity to the front line. Heavy fighting continues in Donetsk Oblast as Russia seeks to occupy the entire region.

The German government commissioned the German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall to deliver 20 additional Marder armored vehicles to Ukraine , the company announced on April 9.

The new delivery was previously announced in March and is valued in the "mid-double-digit million Euro range," according to a statement. Rheinmetall said that the new lot would be delivered sometime in 2024.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the company has already provided Ukraine with more than 100 Marder armored vehicles.

Earlier this year, Germany and Poland agreed to form an "armored vehicles coalition" to support Ukraine's defense capabilities. The initiative will officially begin operations on March 26 .

"More partners have already signed up. This is one of the most important coalitions," Kosiniak-Kamysz said at a press conference with his German counterpart, Boris Pistorius, specifically naming the U.K., Italy, and Sweden.

Germany has become one of Ukraine's leading military donors , second only to the U.S. According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy , Germany has supplied Ukraine with 17.7 billion euros (around $19 billion) in military assistance as of January.

A drone attack allegedly targeted the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant's training center adjacent to the site, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on April 9, citing the plant's occupation administration.

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant , the largest nuclear plant in Europe, has been under Russian occupation since March 2022. IAEA teams have been based at the facility on rotation since September 2022.

Throughout its occupation, the plant has been repeatedly disconnected from the Ukrainian power grid due to Russian attacks on the country's energy infrastructure. Russian troops have also used the plant as a platform to launch strikes at Nikopol, situated just across the Kakhovka Reservoir, and other Ukrainian settlements nearby.

The IAEA said on X that the reported explosion at the facility's training center was "consistent with the IAEA team's observations."

"No direct threat to nuclear safety this time, but the latest incident again underlines an extremely serious situation," said the organization's head, Rafael Grossi.

The plant reportedly suffered at least three direct strikes on April 7. After the alleged attacks, Russia claimed Ukraine was responsible. Ukraine's military intelligence agency (HUR) said Ukraine was not involved .

Russia has initiated a meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors set to take place on April 11 to discuss alleged attacks on the plant, Reuters reported, citing four unnamed diplomats.

Ukraine's nuclear energy agency Energoatom said on April 9 that Russia "upgraded its propaganda to another level," manipulating the IAEA's perspective and accusing Ukraine of security breaches at the plant.

Energoatom said that the only way to prevent nuclear and radiation emergencies is to comply with the IAEA's resolution, withdraw Russian troops and their equipment from the plant, demining nearby territories, and return control over the plant to the agency.

In March, the U.N. nuclear watchdog's Board of Governors passed a resolution demanding Russia to withdraw from Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant .

At least 54 Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) have been executed by Russian soldiers, the head of the War Crimes Department in Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office, Yurii Belousov, said on April 9.

A total of 27 criminal investigations into the executions are underway, Belousov said on national television. Presumably, some of these investigations concern group executions.

There have been a number of reports recently about Russian soldiers killing Ukrainian POWs in the embattled parts of Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk oblasts .

The Prosecutor General’s Office on April 7 opened an investigation into a video that purportedly showed Russian troops shooting three captured and unarmed Ukrainian soldiers in Kherson Oblast .

Belousov confirmed that they were executed near Krynky , a village on the predominantly occupied part of Kherson Oblast east of the Dnipro River.

Prosecutors are investigating the involvement of the Russian command, "which is responsible for such actions" as well, Belousov said.

"We are talking not only about unit commanders but also about the highest military and political leadership. Because this is not a single case, but evidence of Russian policy," Belousov added.

As of March 18, Ukraine had collected evidence on over 128,000 victims of war crimes , according to Veronika Plotnikova, the head of the Coordinating Center for Support of Victims and Witnesses of the Prosecutor General's Office.

US charges five Russian military hackers with targeting Ukraine's government with destructive malware

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Justice accused five members of Russia’s military intelligence agency of hacking several Ukrainian government agencies, an unnamed U.S. government agency in Maryland and computers belonging to 26 NATO countries, among other victims. The DOJ announced the indictment of the five members of Russia’s Main Intelligence Directorate, also known as GRU, and in particular its hacking Unit 29155. The indictment names Russian GRU colonel and commanding officer of cyber operations, Yuriy Denisov; lieutenants Vladislav Borovkov, Denis Denisenko, Dmitriy Goloshubov and Nikolay Korchagin; and a civilian co-conspirator, Amin Stigal, who was previously indicted for some of the same crimes.
