  • Sailboat Guide

Malo 34 is a 34 ′ 9 ″ / 10.6 m monohull sailboat designed by Bo Olsson and built by Malö Yachts between 1990 and 1996.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Broker's Comments

Boatshed London are delighted to offer this fantastic Malo 34 yacht for sale.

This 1992 example is presented in immaculate condition and is ready to sail away tomorrow.

Very similar in design to a Hallberg Rassy, the Malo 34 feels solid and capable as soon as you step onboard with its fixed sprayhood and deep cockpit. They are well suited to long distance cruising and the owner is reluctantly selling because they want something bigger for a circumnav.

On this boat you will find it's well equipped and very well maintained. The mast and rig were replaced in 2006 with a roller boom system now installed. The engine was serviced in August 2019.

The sails locker is well stocked with all sails in very good condition or as new and spinnaker gear. The full suite is detailed above.

The boat was also antifouled in August 2019 and was wintered indoors until 2017.

Viewing is highly recommended on this excellent yacht.

These boat details are subject to contract. Note: Offers on the asking price may be considered.

Tech tycoon, defense attorney, and Morgan Stanley banker among those missing in freak yacht sinking

L ONDON (AP) — A superyacht that sank Monday off the Sicilian coast during a storm left at least six people dead and one passenger missing. Among that list is British tech kingpin Mike Lynch and some of his inner circle, who were gathered to celebrate his victory in a long-running legal trial.

Lynch was acquitted in June in a U.S. fraud case and was apparently aboard the Bayesian with some of the people who stood by him throughout the ordeal. Another member of Lynch's legal team who wasn't aboard, Reid Weingarten, said the outing was intended in part as a celebration of the acquittal.

Here's a look at the people who are dead or missing, as well as details on the recent death of an associate of Lynch who was not on the yacht.

Software entrepreneur Mike Lynch , along with his daughter, Hannah, are among those that police divers are searching for after the yacht was struck by a waterspout off of Porticello, near Palermo.

A spokesperson for Lynch said there were no updates Tuesday.

Lynch had been trying to move past a Silicon Valley debacle that had tarnished his legacy as an icon of British ingenuity.

A Cambridge-educated mathematician, Lynch made his mark with Autonomy, which made a search engine that could pore through emails and other internal business documents to help companies find vital information more quickly. Autonomy’s steady growth in its first decade resulted in Lynch being dubbed Britain’s Bill Gates and earning him one of the U.K’s highest honors, the Office of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2006.

Lynch, 59, sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011 . But the deal quickly turned sour after he was accused of cooking the books to make the sale.

The fraud allegations resulting in Lynch being fired by HP’s then-CEO Meg Whitman and a decade-long legal battle. It culminated with him being extradited from the U.K. to face criminal charges of masterminding a multibillion-dollar fraud.

Lynch steadfastly denied any wrongdoing, asserting that he was being made a scapegoat for HP’s own bungling — a position he maintained while testifying before a jury during a 2 1/2 month trial in San Francisco earlier this year. U.S. Justice Department prosecutors called more than 30 witnesses in an attempt to prove their allegations against Lynch.

Lynch was vindicated at trial in June after being cleared of all charges. Lynch pledged to return to the U.K. and explore new ways to innovate.

Although he avoided a possible prison sentence, Lynch still faced a potentially huge bill stemming from a civil cased in London that HP mostly won in 2022. Damages haven’t been determined in that case, but HP is seeking $4 billion. Lynch made more than $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

Lynch later went on to set up technology investment firm Invoke Capital.

Christopher Morvillo

One of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, Christopher Morvillo of the firm Clifford Chance, and his wife Neda were also on the yacht and are among those unaccounted for.

Morvillo is regarded as an elite defense attorney specializing in fraud and corruption cases. He was previously a federal prosecutor in New York who worked on the criminal investigation of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. His father, Robert Morvillo, was also a lawyer who represented high-profile clients, including Martha Stewart.

In a LinkedIn post soon after Lynch's acquittal, Morvillo paid tribute to the team of lawyers who worked on the case and also his wife and two daughters.

“None of this would have been possible without your love and support. I am so glad to be home,” he wrote. The post ended with the words: “And they all lived happily ever after….”

In a legal podcast released last week, Morvillo recounted his involvement with Lynch's case, starting from when his firm was hired in November 2012.

He flew to London to meet Lynch on Thanksgiving weekend that year and assumed he would be gone for a week, Morvillo told the For the Defense podcast. Instead, Morvillo said he “spent a significant portion of the rest of my life bouncing back and forth between London and New York.”

The case has “covered one third of my career,” he said. “It has been a constant presence in my life for the last 12 years.”

Clifford Chance said it was “in shock and deeply saddened by this tragic incident” and that its thoughts are with Morvillo and his wife. “Our utmost priority is providing support to the family,” the firm said.

Jonathan Bloomer

The chairman of Morgan Stanley's London-based investment banking subsidiary, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife, Judy, were also among the yacht's missing.

Bloomer is non-executive chairman of both Morgan Stanley International, which covers markets outside the U.S., and the Hiscox Group, an insurer that does business on the Lloyd’s of London insurance marketplace.

Lynch appointed Bloomer to Autonomy’s board of directors in 2010, where he served as chairman of the audit committee at the time of the HP deal. Bloomer testified for the defense at Lynch’s trial.

Both Morgan Stanley and Hiscox said they were “deeply shocked and saddened" by the tragedy.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular the Bloomer family, as we all wait for further news from this terrible situation," the bank said.

Aki Hussain, the group chief executive of Hiscox, said "our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation.”

Stephen Chamberlain

In a strange coincidence, another former Autonomy executive who was acquitted alongside Lynch of the fraud charges died days before the sinking of the Bayesian.

Stephen Chamberlain “was fatally struck by a car on Saturday while out running,” his lawyer Gary Lincenberg said in a statement.

Chamberlain, formerly a vice-president of finance at the company, was accused of artificially inflating Autonomy’s revenues and making false and misleading statements to auditors, analysts and regulators.

He stood trial with Lynch, and was also found not guilty.

“He was a courageous man with unparalleled integrity. We deeply miss him," Lincenberg said. “Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family.”

Chamberlain “was a much-loved husband, father, son, brother and friend," his family said in statement released through Cambridgeshire Police. “He was an amazing individual whose only goal in life was to help others in any way possible."

Police said the driver, a 49-year-old woman, remained at the scene in the village of Stretham, England, and was assisting with the investigation.

Recaldo Thomas

The chef with Antiguan roots was the first confirmed death from the accident. Cooking for Lynch was supposed to be one of his last jobs before retiring, his cousin, David Isaac, told The Associated Press.

Thomas was born in Canada but he would visit his parents’ homeland of Antigua as a child, moving permanently to the tiny eastern Caribbean island in his early 20s.

“He was a free spirit,” Isaac recalled. “Nothing rattled him. I’ve never seen him upset.”

Upon moving to Antigua, Thomas, best known as “Rick,” started working as a bartender in Jolly Harbor so he could be close to the sea, his second love after cooking, Isaac said.

Thomas also picked up jobs on small boats and eventually went to culinary school and started working on bigger ships.

Isaac recalled how Thomas would be gone for several months at a time and then unexpectedly show up in Antigua between jobs.

“This particular incident was hard,” Isaac said. “He was just ready to tie up the end of his journey in his career."

Isaac recalled Thomas’ “big, infectious” laugh and said he found some solace in that “Rick did exactly what he was meant to do and what he loved doing.”

Russia urges citizens to stop using dating apps in areas being hammered by ukraine.

Russia has begged its citizens to quit using dating apps and warned them to start curbing social media usage in the regions being hammered by Ukrainian forces following their surprise cross-border incursion.

“The use of online dating services is strongly discouraged,” Russia’s interior ministry warned in a post on its official Telegram channel.

“The enemy actively uses such resources for information gathering.”

Ukrainian forces fight during military operations in Russia's Kursk region Wednesday.

The warning was blasted out late Tuesday to citizens in Kursk, Belgorod and Bryansk — three border regions being targeted by Ukrainian forces as Kyiv forges ahead with its incursion onslaught.

In addition to trying to clamp down on dating app usage, the ministry fired off a list of recommendations advising people not to open hyperlinks in messages or stream videos where military vehicles are present, and to remove all geo-tagging locations on social media.

“The enemy monitors social networks in real time by these tags and reveals the actual location of military and security forces,” the post said.

Ukrainian forces are also connecting to “unprotected CCTV cameras remotely, viewing everything — from private yards to roads and highways of strategic importance,” the ministry added.

Separately, Russia’s state telecommunications monitoring service said Wednesday it had recorded mass disruptions in the popular Telegram and WhatsApp messaging apps.

It stopped short of revealing what was behind the disruptions.

Russia has begged its citizens to quit using dating apps and warned them to start curbing social media usage.

The warnings, meanwhile, came as Ukraine attacked Moscow on Wednesday with one of the biggest drone strikes since the war began in February 2022.

Russia’s defense ministry said it downed a total of 45 drones over Russian territory overnight, including 11 over the Moscow region, 23 over Bryansk, six over the Belgorod region, three over the Kaluga region and two over the Kursk region.

“This was one of the biggest attempts of all time to attack Moscow using drones,” Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said on his Telegram channel, adding that strong defenses around the capital made it possible to shoot the drones down before they struck their intended targets.

Russian media showed unverified footage of drones apparently whizzing through the sky in Moscow before being destroyed by air defense systems.

While Ukraine has been bogged down in a land conflict in eastern Ukraine in which the Russians have been driving forward slowly at a heavy cost to both sides, Kyiv has also been peppering Russia with drones.

Ukraine has targeted oil refineries and airfields in an attempt to weaken Russia’s fighting potential — and also has targeted the capital a slew of times.

Ukrainian forces have been using US-manufactured HIMARS rocket systems to destroy pontoon bridges and engineering equipment in Kursk, Ukraine’s military said Wednesday.

Russian officials have said Ukraine has damaged or destroyed at least three bridges over the Seym River since Kyiv launched its incursion on Aug. 6 — advancing up to 39 miles.

The attacks on the bridges could potentially trap Russian forces between the river, the Ukrainian advance and the Ukrainian border.

Washington hasn’t publicly commented on the use of US-made weapons in Kursk region.

Inflation reduction act two years later: auto manufacturing jobs at 34-year peak.

This is the third article in a series exploring the Inflation Reduction Act’s impact after two years. The first summarizes its total impact, the second details historic industry investment.

Growing up in southeast Michigan in the 1970s and 80s provided a front row seat for the American auto industry’s downward slide. Auto factories were closing, workers were getting laid-off, and communities were suffering as foreign automakers gained market share. But thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act , that trend has been thrown in reverse.

Recent United States Bureau of Labor Statistics data suggest a renaissance for American vehicle manufacturing jobs is already happening. As of June 2024, vehicle manufacturing jobs have reached a 34-year peak in the U.S., representing the strongest growth in a generation.

Manufacturing job growth is sought after because of its accessibility and significant impact on community prosperity. These positions offer good pay and strong career development pathways, often only requiring technical training rather than a four-year degree. Policymakers prioritize these jobs because they provide a reliable foundation for middle-class stability and economic mobility, contributing to both individual success and broader economic health.

Now those jobs are being generated by a historic investment in our country’s clean energy economy.

Forget the fed—china could be about to drop a $420 billion bitcoin and crypto price bombshell, apple iphone 16 pro: new design echoed in latest leak, a domestic automotive manufacturing jobs strategy.

The current U.S. administration's clean tech and modern supply-side industrial policy is central to its goals for job creation, with the IRA serving as a cornerstone.

Two years after the IRA’s passage, its provisions have boosted domestic manufacturing jobs, particularly through clean vehicle manufacturing incentives. The act offers substantial tax incentives for domestic EV manufacturing, including up to $7,500 in tax credits for consumers purchasing new EVs that meet specific domestic content requirements.

The IRA also includes tax credits for domestically produced batteries, reflecting a federal policy strategy that targets manufacturing job growth across all segments of the auto supply chain, and has spurred a “Battery Belt” of factories across the Southeast.

Beyond the IRA, the administration’s broader strategy promotes American automotive manufacturing through various initiatives. $1.7 billion in grants were recently allocated to help factories transition to electric vehicle production, aiming to support manufacturers and protect jobs. Among the recipients is a Jeep plant in Illinois which closed last year, but will restore 1,450 jobs once it is reopened.

Additionally, the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program, under the U.S. Department of Energy, is making $10 billion in loan authority available for automotive manufacturing conversion projects that retain high-quality jobs in existing manufacturing communities.

For example, a $2 billion loan commitment to a lithium-ion battery recycling project in Nevada is expected to create 3,400 construction jobs, ultimately employing approximately 1,600 full-time employees

Fresh Data Analysis Uncovers Historic Automotive Job Growth

Recent data reveals that the current administration's strategy has achieved remarkable success in creating new manufacturing jobs. As of July 2024, vehicle manufacturing jobs have reached a 34-year peak, with 308,000 workers—the highest level recorded in the available BLS data, going back to January 1990.

Comparing job trends across presidential administrations highlights these findings. During the Biden administration, the U.S. added an average of 19,500 vehicle manufacturing jobs annually, the strongest growth under any recent presidency. By contrast, the industry experienced significant declines during the Bush administration, with an average loss of 14,100 jobs per year. The Obama administration, despite inheriting a struggling auto industry, managed to spur growth, adding an average of 6,200 jobs annually over eight years. During the Trump administration, before the COVID-19 recession, the industry grew by 9,500 jobs per year.

Similar trends are evident in the broader category of transportation equipment manufacturing, which includes vehicle assembly, engine manufacturing, parts suppliers, aircraft, and off-road vehicle production. Employment in this sector has reached a 22-year high, returning to levels last seen in 2002. Historical comparisons across presidential administrations show a consistent pattern, with the Biden administration leading in job creation and the Bush administration seeing the most significant losses.

What’s moving the needle

Federal strategy has not only significantly boosted investment in EV manufacturing, it’s created clean energy jobs and prepared American manufacturing to compete on a global scale. It’s also increased the nation’s share of international investment flows. From 18% of international investment flows before the pandemic, the U.S. share has increased to almost one-third of the global total , contrasting with stagnant investment levels in Europe.

In the automotive sector, the IRA sparked substantial investment in EV and battery manufacturing. An analysis earlier this year found $114 billion in private-sector EV-related investments are expected to generate around 99,600 jobs.

The EV supply chain is emerging as a significant source of employment. Research indicates that vehicle electrification could lead to increased automotive manufacturing jobs because producing and assembling battery packs is labor intensive. A recent analysis estimates that 13,400 people are currently employed in manufacturing vehicle battery packs.

Current federal strategy is positioning American manufacturing to compete in next-generation transportation technologies. While the U.S. is making progress, European and Chinese markets currently lead in EV adoption. EVs recently surpassed 50% of sales in China , setting a new monthly record in July. And while global internal combustion engine vehicle sales peaked in 2017 and have declined since, EV sales have surged from 1 million to 14 million in 2023, representing 18% of total sales .

EV Sales Are Growing While Conventional Car Sales Are Shrinking.

Add up all for an international perspective and it’s clear EVs are transforming global markets with the future is headed toward battery-electric vehicles.

Automotive Manufacturing Once Again An Economic Engine

The American automotive manufacturing jobs resurgence is not a statistical anomaly; it is the result of strategic policies and targeted investments in clean technology. The IRA's incentives for EV and battery manufacturing, along with a broader federal focus on domestic production, have revitalized a sector once considered in decline.

The data says it all: Vehicle manufacturing jobs have reached a 34-year peak, and transportation equipment employment has reached levels not seen in over two decades.

This industrial renaissance signifies expanding opportunities for upward mobility, a critical development amid growing concerns about the erosion of the American Dream.

As the industry increasingly shifts towards electric vehicles, the IRA’s impact has established a strong foundation for enhancing U.S. automotive competitiveness. The shift from the industry's decline in the 70s and 80s to its current revival underscores the vital role of proactive policy and investment in fostering economic growth and technological innovation.

Ukraine war latest: Vladimir Putin 'has made decision' on responding to Kursk invasion

Vladimir Putin has "made a decision" and there will be "severe punishment" following Ukraine's incursion into Russia, according to the Russian ambassador to the US. Elsewhere, Russia has been forced to suspend a ferry service to Crimea following a Ukrainian attack.

  • Putin has 'made decision' on responding to Kursk invasion
  • Russia suspends ferry service to Crimea after Ukrainian attack
  • Moscow strengthening offensive towards key strategic hub
  • Russian snipers kill prisoners who took hostages at penal colony
  • Your questions answered : Is there a larger response to come from Russia over the Kursk invasion?
  • Live reporting by Niamh Lynch

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged "to stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes with whatever it takes" in a video released for Ukraine's independence day today.

He finished the message with the national salute "Slava Ukraini" - meaning glory to Ukraine.

Pictures have emerged of the aftermath of a prisoner exchange swap.

Ukrainian soldiers are seen holding flags and hugging fellow troops after their release from Russian custody this morning.

Meanwhile, photos released by the Russia's defence ministry show some its servicemen who were captured during Ukraine's latest incursion in Kursk being taken away by bus.

Ukraine and Russia have agreed to exchange 115 prisoners of war.

Ukrainian officials said the 115 servicemen who were freed were conscripts, many of whom were taken prisoner in the first months of Russia's invasion.

Among them are nearly 50 soldiers captured by Russian forces from the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol.

Russia's defence ministry said the 115 Russian soldiers had been captured in the Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces launched their surprise offensive into Russia two weeks ago.

The ministry said the soldiers were currently in Belarus, but would be taken to Russia for medical treatment and rehabilitation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a post on X that the United Arab Emirates had brokered the exchange, the 55th since February 2022.

Welcome back to our live coverage of the war in Ukraine.

We'll be bringing you all the latest updates as Ukrainian forces continue to cause problems for Russia in its Kursk region.

The two countries are also set to exchange 115 prisoners today, including some who were captured inside Kursk.

Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy referred to the Russian border as that "between Ukraine and oppression, between life and death… an independent European state and the number one terrorist organisation in the world" in a speech this morning.

Before we bring you more of today's news, here's a reminder of what's happened in the last 24 hours:

  • India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Volodymyr Zelenskyy to sit down for talks with Russia during his trip to Kyiv;
  • The Wagner mercenary group has become "increasingly fragmented" in the year since its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin and founder Dmitry Utkin were killed in a plane crash, according to the UK Ministry of Defence;
  • Ukrainian forces claimed they have recaptured nearly two square kilometres of territory in the northeastern Kharkiv region.

We're ending our live coverage of the Ukraine war for now.

We will return with any major developments this evening, but if not we'll be back soon with all the latest updates.

Here is a reminder of today's key events:

  • India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Volodymyr Zelenskyy to sit down for talks with Russia to end the war as the two leaders met in Kyiv;
  • Russia accused Ukraine of trying to attack a nuclear power plant in an overnight drone attack;
  • Germany is investigating suspected drone espionage after drones were flown over several industrial sites;
  • Ukrainian forces claimed they have recaptured nearly two square kilometres of territory in the northeastern Kharkiv region;
  • Russian snipers killed four prisoners at a penal colony who seized prison guards as hostages and declared allegiance to the Islamic State - all hostages were freed, local media reports said;
  • Moscow suspended a ferry service operating between its southern territory and Crimea following a Ukrainian attack.

Russia has reportedly reinforced troops in its push for the key Ukrainian strategic hub of Pokrovsk in the eastern Donetsk region.

Although Moscow has been redeploying troops from other regions in Ukraine back to Russia in order to head off a Ukrainian incursion, it has not redeployed troops from its offensive towards the city but has instead reinforced them, according to The Economist.

Russian forces have been pushing towards the key strategic hub for months.

Capturing the city would compromise Kyiv's defensive abilities and supply routes, and bring Russia closer to its stated aim of controlling the entire Donetsk region.

Earlier, our military analyst Sean Bell answered a reader's question on whether there is a response to come from Russia over the Kursk invasion - and he said Moscow might focus on its offensive towards Pokrovsk.

You can read more on that below...

We brought you reports earlier that prisoners at a Russian penal colony had taken prison staff hostage and killed one person.

Local news outlets now say snipers from Russia's national guard have killed the four hostage-takers.

The National Guard Service said the inmates were "neutralised" and all hostages freed, the reports said, though the number of hostages was not specified.

Before the inmates were shot, state news agency TASS said four victims were taken to a local hospital, with two of them in serious condition.

Unconfirmed reports on the Telegram messaging app said one or two people had died.

A video filmed by the attackers showed four uniformed officials lying in pools of blood - three of them motionless. Another was sitting upright in a doorway with a knife held to his neck.

One man shouted that they were Islamic State militants and had seized control of the prison in the Volgograd region.

Other videos showed four men pacing about a prison yard where a bloodied prison staff member was being held hostage.

One of the prisoners appeared to have an improvised explosive vest while the others were carrying knives and hammers.

Russian media said the four suspects were citizens of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan and three were in jail for drug offences and the fourth for unpremeditated murder.

The United States has added 105 Russian and Chinese firms to a trade restriction list for allegedly supporting the Russian military, ramping up pressure on Moscow's war efforts in Ukraine.

The 63 Russian and 42 Chinese companies, along with 18 from other countries, were targeted for several reasons, from sending US electronics to Russian military-related parties to producing thousands of Shahed-136 drones for Moscow to use in Ukraine.

Being added to the entity list means US suppliers will have to apply for a hard-to-get licence if they want to ship to the targeted companies.

Many of the firms were also given a special designation forcing overseas suppliers to get the same US licences before shipping to the targeted companies.

Russia has accused Ukraine of trying to attack a nuclear power plant in an overnight drone attack.

It is the second time Moscow has made such allegations in two days.

The nuclear plant is located in the Kursk region in western Russia, where fighting has raged since Kyiv's forces launched an incursion into Russian territory.

The Ukrainian defence ministry is yet to comment on the Russian allegation.

Meanwhile the Russian defence ministry said its air defence units had shot down three Ukrainian drones in the region overnight.

It said it had thwarted Kyiv's attempt to carry out "a terrorist attack" against Russian facilities.

Russian state news agency TASS reported a drone had been shot down near a storage facility for spent nuclear fuel at the Kursk power plant.

TASS quoted Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova as saying it was an "act of nuclear terrorism" requiring an immediate response from the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The head of the IAEA Rafael Grossi is due to visit the power plant next week and has appealed for maximum restraint in order to avoid a nuclear accident.

Who are Mike Lynch and the other people missing after a yacht sank in Sicily?

Search teams are scouring waters along Italy’s southwestern shore, where a luxury sailing yacht sank early Monday. Six people are known to be missing, including British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and his daughter, and Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife.

Faced with the possibility that some people might have been trapped inside the ship when it sank in a storm, dive teams (including cave divers from the local fire brigade) have been looking for ways to enter the vessel.

Italian firefighter divers bring ashore in a green bag the body of one of the victims of the U.K.-flag vessel Bayesian on Wednesday.

The Palermo Coast Guard told NPR on Tuesday that such an operation is complicated by the depth and position of the hull, which lies on the seabed at a depth of around 50 meters, about a half-mile from the port in Porticello, Sicily.

Lynch, a mathematician and longtime tech entrepreneur, was on a vacation voyage that apparently doubled as a celebration of his recent acquittal on federal fraud charges in the U.S. At least two members of his legal team were reportedly on the boat.

Here’s what we know about Lynch and the tragic situation off Sicily’s coast:

Who is Mike Lynch?

Lynch, 59, made his name as the founder and longtime leader of Autonomy, a search engine and software company that helped companies manage information. Hewlett-Packard bought Autonomy for $11 billion in 2011, but Lynch then faced accusations — and then federal charges — that he had misrepresented his company’s financial health and prospects. Lynch denied the claims, saying HP was blaming him for its own problems.

Lynch was indicted on multiple fraud and conspiracy counts in late 2018, months after Autonomy’s former chief financial officer, Sushovan Hussain, was convicted of fraud (he was later sentenced to five years in prison).

Search resumes for British tech magnate and 5 others after yacht sinks off Sicily

Lynch successfully delayed extradition from the U.K. until May 2023 . Earlier this year, the case finally culminated in a lengthy trial in San Francisco that ended with Lynch’s acquittal of all charges against him in June , after he testified on his own behalf.

Also acquitted was Stephen Chamberlain, Autonomy’s former finance VP. But on Saturday — just two days before Lynch was caught in a boating catastrophe — Chamberlain was killed in a car accident , after he was struck while out for a run.

Lynch earned a Ph.D. in adaptive pattern recognition from Cambridge University. In 2006, he was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) honor for his work in the U.K.’s tech industry. After selling Autonomy, he founded an investment group focused on startups emerging from Cambridge University.

Who else was aboard?

Survivors include Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, along with Charlotte Golunski, who works at Invoke Capital, Lynch’s venture capital firm. Golunski was on the ship with her daughter, Sofia, who had just celebrated her first birthday. In an interview with La Repubblica , Golunski said she held her little girl as she floated in darkness, using all her strength to keep her arms up and prevent Sofia from drowning. Sophia’s father was also onboard and survived.

Ayla Ronald, a lawyer who worked on Lynch’s fraud case, and her partner also escaped the wreck. Other survivors include several crew members, including two women in their early 20s who were part of the ship’s staff.

Missing along with Lynch and Bloomer are Lynch’s daughter, Hannah, 18; Bloomer’s wife, Judy; a lawyer for Lynch named Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda, according to local newspaper Giornale di Sicilia .

Bloomer was a partner at Arthur Andersen for some 20 years, until 1994, according to his LinkedIn profile . He then led the financial services company Prudential before taking on a number of chairman roles, including at the legal services firm DWF.

Bloomer is also currently chairman of insurance company the Hiscox Group.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic event,” Hiscox CEO Aki Hussain said in a statement sent to NPR. “Our thoughts are with all those affected, in particular our Chair, Jonathan Bloomer, and his wife Judy, who are among the missing, and with their family as they await further news from this terrible situation.”

What happened to the yacht?

The gathering took place aboard a massive sailing yacht called Bayesian — a term that, in mathematics and statistics, refers to probability and uncertainty. The yacht’s overall length is listed at 55.9 meters (183 feet).

The Bayesian was off the coast of Porticello when it was swamped by a violent storm before dawn on Monday morning. Numerous eyewitness accounts cited a waterspout — a highly localized spiraling storm that’s essentially a marine tornado. Around that time, the Bayesian was located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, according to the Marine Traffic tracking site.

The ship, which had 22 people aboard, sank. In the aftermath, 15 people were rescued, but one died and six were unaccounted for.

What about the rescue effort?

Helicopters and marine craft have been searching for any sign of the passengers, hoping to find more survivors. Sea and cave divers have also been part of the effort.

Italy’s fire brigade, Vigili del Fuoco, says it is working on a plan for divers to enter the sunken vessel. An initial attempt on Monday was cut short after divers were able to gain only limited access , citing furniture that blocked a passageway.

When asked about the possibility of finding any other survivors of the calamity, Comandante Vincenzo Zagarola of the Italian Coast Guard told radio station RTL 102.5 on Tuesday that given how much time has elapsed, it’s difficult to imagine a good outcome for the missing passengers. But, he said, the search will continue.
